stay and unwind Come as you are,
Welcome to Austin, the capital of Texas and Live Music Capital of the WorldŽ. This vibrant, growing city echoes with the sounds of rock, blues, jazz, country, classical and Latin music — on any given evening, you can choose among nearly 200 different venues to dance the night away, or simply relax and take in the melodies.
For great shopping, check out South Congress Avenue, where vintage boutiques and kitschy shops create a row of colorful storefronts. Visit the 2nd Street District for cosmopolitan fashions, home goods and wearable art. Or head to The Domain for big-name designers like Louis Vuitton and Burberry.
Austin stands as the gateway to the scenic Texas Hill Country, marked by rolling hills and wideopen landscapes. Surrounded by three lakes and a network of parks, visitors can enjoy hiking, rock climbing, cycling, swimming, horseback riding, or even fly through native cypress trees on a zip-line eco-tour.
This visitor guide is your key to our city. It provides hundreds of hotels, restaurants, music venues, attractions, historic sites, cultural options and shopping destinations to fill your days and nights.
This effervescent university town combines a friendly, laid-back ambiance with a rich history and just a touch of Texas bravado. The Texas Capitol, a towering edifice of sunset red granite, is a must-see. Hear how Austin emerged as the seat of Texas government and visit some of the city’s original structures on a free Austin CVB walking tour. Or take in the historic sites as you meander along Congress Avenue.

Capital of the World Live Music
ÂŽ
To create a great live music scene, you follow a simple recipe: combine great venues, bands and fans. But to make it ourish, you have to cultivate all three. In the Live Music Capital of the WorldŽ, making it all come together is a way of life.
Legendary Venues
Local Talent
Austin’s local bands make the city a focal point of live music. Spoon, for instance, has a huge national following but got its start at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Grupo Fantasma is a local favorite blending funk, mambo, merengue and cumbia. Longtime Latin rocker Alejandro Escovedo maintains a large underground following and continues to sell out shows nationwide. The Gourds represent the eclectic roots scene, while Dale Watson, Heybale and Brennen Leigh cover the country music angle. Willie Nelson often receives credit for jumpstarting the city’s music scene in the '70s, but the late blues-rock guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan is perhaps the most famous local legend. The city even erected a memorial statue to its “patron saint of music on the shores of Lady Bird Lake.

Unmatched Fans
With so many great venues and bands, being a music fan in Austin should be easy. But the competition is ďŹ erce, and whether they’re mapping out a strategy for the 1,800-plus musical acts during South by Southwest week or waiting in line for hours for the chance to attend a taping of the Austin City Limits TV show, local fans will do whatever it takes to show their support. Popular bands are often the hottest ticket, but you can also catch live music in the city’s airport, grocery stores, record stores and even City Hall.

From the tiny clubs along Sixth Street to the 351-acre Zilker Park with its 60,000-fan capacity, Austin’s live music venues are anything but ordinary. A South Congress classic, The Continental Club presents a full line-up of country, rock, blues and jazz. In the Red River District, Emo’s alternative lounge has launched the careers of countless indie bands. The long-standing Saxon Pub on South Lamar is where locals go to hear fellow singersongwriters perform.

Q: How has growing up in Austin and being a part of mentor groups like Soul Tree Collective shaped your love for music?
A: Austin is the greatest city to live in, ever. Even without the music I’d love it here. The fact that a real band [Unified Tribe] mentored us made the program. We got to see what a tight band really was and we worked towards that. It permanently taught me how to be in a band and I am so grateful for it.

Go Gourmet — In Austin, it’s easy to plan a day fit for a foodie.
Half-Day Itinerary: If it happens to be a Saturday, then the Austin Farmers Market should definitely be your first stop. Besides fruits and vegetables, you’ll find artisan breads, homemade cheeses and fresh flowers. The market is also open Wednesday afternoons year-round. Any other day of the week (except Sunday), head to Central Market, which — in addition to a vast selection of wines — sells high-end olive oils, chocolates, cheeses and other epicurean delights. After you’ve whet your appetite at one of the markets, spend the afternoon in the Texas Hill Country visiting two or three of the many wineries nestled in the lush green hillside. Go to texaswinetrail.com to find maps and everything else you need to plan.

Tune In — There’s a reason Austin is called the Live Music Capital of the World®. Half-Day Itinerary: Begin the afternoon by visiting the statue of Stevie Ray Vaughan on the shore of Lady Bird Lake, which stands near the spot where the homegrown guitar legend played his last Austin concert. Then, browse the aisles at Waterloo Records, an Austin mainstay often cited as one of the best record stores in the country. As the sun goes down, treat yourself to a show at one of the city’s 200 live music venues. Try wandering down Sixth Street and listening to

the music pouring out of each doorway until you hear something you like. Or, visit austintexas.org for the latest list of venues.
Make it a Full Day: You can really round out your Austin music experience with several weekly tours. On Thursdays, at 3:30 p.m., see how guitars are made at the Collings Guitar Factory. Then, on Fridays, at 10:30 a.m., visit the studio where the legendary TV show Austin City Limits is taped. Visit klru.org and collingsguitars.com for details on each tour.
Take a Trip Back in Time — Roots run deep in Texas' beloved capital city. Half-Day Itinerary: Walk 10-block Congress Avenue and nine-block Sixth Street National Register Districts where you'll find modern skyscrapers sharing blocks with 19th-century buildings such as the Old Bakery (1876), Millett Opera House (1878), Driskill Hotel (1886), Walter Tips Building (1876) and Robinson-Rosner Building (1856). Historic structures such as St. Mary's Cathedral (1874) and St. David's Church (1854) reflect Old World architecture. Reserve a spot on a guided tour 9 a.m. Thurs.–Sat. and 2 p.m. on Sun. at austintexas.org. Make it a Full Day: Spend the afternoon strolling historic Hyde Park, one of Austin's oldest neighborhoods, and the Texas State Cemetery, the resting place of many Texas heroes. Top the day off with a visit to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and learn about the Lone Star State through interactive exhibits, historical artifacts, an IMAX® Theatre and the multi-sensory Texas Spirit Theatre. Come-as-you-are Austin plays to a diverse population of cultures, political leanings and lifestyles. The Mexican American Cultural Center anchors the Latino community, as does the Carver Museum for the city’s AfricanAmerican neighborhoods. Austin’s growing Asian influence has resulted in many festivals, parades and cultural performances. And Austin has long been regarded as one of the friendliest cities in the country for GLBT travelers and residents.
AFRICAN-AMERICAN-
Austin’s African-Americans have played a strong role in the city’s upbringing since Texas gained statehood in 1845. CELEBRATING CULTURAL LEGACIES The George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center pays tribute to Dr. Washington, the “peanut doctor,” whose efforts aided black sharecroppers throughout the South in the early 20th century. In addition to changing exhibits and educational programs, the facility has four permanent galleries, including an exhibit on Austin African-American families, an artist’s gallery, a children’s exhibit on African-American scientists and inventors, and the core exhibit on the statewide Juneteenth holiday.
22

Commemorating the ending of slavery, Austin celebrates Juneteenth (June 19) — the day Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 — each year with parades, picnics and a Battle of the Bands. The park at the Rosewood Recreation Center is the home of two historical structures: the Madison Log Cabin and the Doris Miller Auditorium. The Madison Log Cabin houses historical documents and relics related to African-American heritage. The Doris Miller Auditorium, named for Pearl Harbor hero Doris “Dorie” Miller, the first African-American recipient of the Navy Cross, hosts year-round classes, workshops and special events. The Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex features a bowling alley, rollerskating rink, a movie theater and arcade.

KEEPING THE RHYTHM Austin is well known for its something-foreveryone music scene, which has evolved from a crossroads of cultures for more than 80 years. And the African-American influence has been there from the start. In the 1920s, performers such as Duke Ellington and Count Basie visited the city’s jazz joints. By the 1960s, blues was pumping onto the streets from R&B houses such as the Johnny Holmes’ Historic Victory Grill, once part of a network of venues throughout the South where black musicians performed. The area along East 11th St. has become known as the East End Cultural Heritage District, where the East End Fourth Fridays and the East End Summertime Concert Series celebrate the area’s heritage with rhythm and blues, jazz and gospel, April through October. In September, the multi-day Austin Jazz and Arts Festival takes center stage, showcasing nationally and internationally acclaimed musicians and artists at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard. Pro Arts Collective presents a year-round schedule of performances.
LATIN-AMERICAN-
From food and music to art and cinema, Latin-American influences flourish around town. ¡QUE RICO! Austin is recognized nationally as one of the best cities in the U.S. for Latinos to live and work. One of the best ways to sample local Hispanic culture is through tasty, authentic cuisine. Dishes such as pollo en mole and pescado veracruzano are found at popular eateries such as El Sol y La Luna or the Sunday brunch at Fonda San Miguel. Still looking to satisfy your taste for Tex-Mex? No problem. Ask a local about their favorite spot. There’s great food to be enjoyed at every turn. CANVASES, COSTUMES AND CINEMA For a cultural experience like no other, head to the University of Texas at Austin campus. The university’s Blanton Museum, an awe-inspiring 180,000-square-foot museum complex at MLK Blvd. and Congress Ave., boasts one of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary Latin-American

new Latin cinema. For laughs, check out the Latino Comedy Project (LCP), a Tejano Spanglish-speaking, touring sketch-comedy troupe, which performs at different locations throughout Austin.
At Mexic-Arte Museum revolving exhibits pay tribute to traditional and contemporary Mexican, Latino and Latin-American art and culture. The museum also sponsors the city’s largest Day of the Dead celebration — a Mexican holiday held in early November to honor the memory of deceased ancestors. Festivities include street festivals, live music, theatrical performances, costume contests and a spirited parade.
Or, head to the Austin Latino Music Association’s “Sonidos del Barrio” (Sounds of the Barrio) music series, which showcases a broad array of Latino musical styles. Austin celebrates Latino Music Month in May with performances throughout the city and ending with the Pachanga Festival. The Mexican American Cultural Center at 600 River St. provides multipurpose space for music and dance performances, an exhibit gallery and outdoor plaza.
More Latino and Chicano art is available at La Peña. Part art gallery, part educational organization and part cultural center, La Peña features rotating exhibits by wellknown artists such as Nivia Gonzalez, Sam Coronado and Ester Hernandez. La Peña also sponsors film festivals, musical performances, instructional lectures and literary festivals. The annual Cine Las Américas, held every spring at various venues throughout the city, features an international festival of

GLBT-
Austin’s GLBT scene has it all. Austin is known for its progressive culture and a strong local GLBT community. The city boasts exciting nightlife and prominent annual events such as the Gay Pride Parade, Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival, Gay Rodeo and biannual Splash Day celebrations.

STAYING CONNECTED The Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce provides extensive information on GLBT-friendly businesses and events. An online directory points people in the best direction for dining and shopping and tips on where to find Austin’s hottest happenings. In addition, a large network of local nonprofit organizations are active in the GLBT community and provide several. Call the chamber at 512-474-4422 or visit aglcc.org. ENTERTAINING OPTIONS The best place to head for the hottest gay nightlife is Austin’s Warehouse District. Hip, chic and upscale, Rain on 4th is where you can dance to the latest rhythms and club music spun by popular DJs. Cowboys and cowgirls two-step their way through the night in starched Wranglers and cowboy boots at the Rainbow Cattle Company. Along with the country-western vibe, other evening entertainment features drag shows and Latin dancing. Oilcan Harry’s has been known as one of the top gay bars in Austin and in America for more than 15 years. The upscale club is home to
cutting-edge music, karaoke nights and a friendly staff ready to mix the perfect martini to start the evening off right. The Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce's Pride Festival each June is a community event not to miss. This year's two-day PRIDE 2010 will welcome more than 30,000 attendees with DJs, celebrities, a VIP reception and, of course, the popular nighttime Pride Parade and after party in Republic Park. The event also includes an art exhibit, LGBT education display, children’s parade, 5K race and AGLCC brunch. ON STAGE Don’t miss the Capital City Men’s Chorus, celebrating its 20th season as Austin’s premier gay chorus. Hear ethereal musical renditions throughout the year as these men entertain around town. Find out about upcoming events and purchase tickets online at ccmcaustin.org. ON SCREEN For the southwest's oldest and largest GLBTQI film event, be sure to attend the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival (aGLIFF) in September.

Want to find the best brisket in town? Craving spicy queso dip? Or just seeking a relaxing evening of wine and live jazz? Austin’s culinary scene will match your mood. Local menus serve up an eclectic range of ethnic restaurants, from Cajun and Asian to Caribbean and Mediterranean; while regional Tex-Mex staples such as fajitas, breakfast tacos and icy margaritas rival smoky Texas barbecue and downhome country cooking. And don’t forget about Austin’s phenomenal fine dining and creative fusion options. Backdrops include rooftop patios with sunset views, backyard picnic tables with live music on makeshift stages and white-tablecloth restaurants with twinkling candlelight. It’s all here! Log on to austintexas.org and view featured dining experiences, browse area restaurants and search businesses by cuisine. Learn about food-focused events, including Brew B Que in May, the Austin Ice Cream Festival in early August and the locally loved Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival in late August.
