I could rave about this genius forever, but I won’t, for fear of being sectioned. (Rachael is already responsible for insomnia, frothing and crossed-eyes-syndrome - this would only add to the growing list of problems arising from reading Spark.) Spark will stay with me for a long time, so much so that it has oiled the cogs of my own inner conscience. I feel another book coming on. Rachael, you are an inspiration. P

eru, a country that sits politely on the western shoulder of South America has invoked the curiosity of people from around the world for centuries. From the time of the Spanish conquistadors, showing up on her northern shores in the 16th century, till the discovery of Machu Pichhu by Hiram Bingham in 1911, it has captured our collective imagination with the glitter of long lost treasures and grand Inca cities, waiting to be unearthed and discovered.

I

n June 2014, I decided to plan a trip to Peru. 2 weeks of solo traveling in a totally new continent, where I don’t speak the local language. It was to be my first major solo adventure and I was a palpable mix of excitement and apprehension. It was my time of soul searching and getting over my block surrounding traveling alone. I wanted to test myself by going out of my comfort zone and still enjoying my time in Peru. I ended up traveling through a sizeable chunk of southern Peru and here is sneak peak of my experiences through the various regions of Peru. PAGE 6 BLANK - ISSUE 1 - MAY 2015

I arrived in Lima, the capital of Peru on 17th August and ended up staying with a couple I connected through AirBnB, in the semi residential neighbourhood of Barranco. Barranco is full of quaint, old colonial houses and cobbled streets. It is quite safe and is close to the more hip and modern neighbourhood of Miraflores. It is right next to the coast and has its share of beaches. Check out the little, romantic garden next to this bridge called Puente de los Suspiros in Barranco and the various parks in Miraflores overlooking the Pacific Ocean, such as Parque Reserva and Parque de Amor. I ended up wandering around the place on foot, tried some amazing Peruvian cuisines and took one of those sightseeing bus tours from Parque Kennedy. I was staying in Lima for only 2 days. If you don’t have much time then a bus tour of the colonial buildings and churches at their central plaza is the best option. I also took a taxi to the famous Larco Museum in the neighbourhood of Pueblo Libre. If you want to know more about pre Inca and Inca civilizations and want to see some exquisite pottery (and

also some erotic pottery!) then this museum is a must visit. I am afraid to say though that Lima is not a very pretty city, especially in the winter. During the winter, the sky gets permanently blotted out by a grey blanket of cloud and fog, even though it doesn’t rain (Lima is ensconced amidst a semi-arid desert). This is called garua and it gives Lima a very depressing look. It is also quite polluted and is like any other big South American city. Flying off to Cusco from Lima was a great idea. I was starting to get tired of Lima within 2 days itself. Cusco is just amazing! It is a smallish city, surrounded by hills and filled with tourists. The architecture is a beautiful melange of old Inca structures and Spanish colonial edifices. Be aware that Cusco sits at nearly 12,000 ft above sea level and coming from Lima you can easily get altitude sickness upon arrival. I did feel it a bit but I decided on having Coca tea (mate de coca), having light meals for the first day, no alcohol and even chewing some Coca leaves (they taste pretty ok). Coca is great for soroche (altitude sickness). Also do not exert yourself on the first day in Cusco. Keep it light. BLANK - ISSUE 1 - MAY 2015 PAGE 7

Cusco is great for wandering around aimlessly, chatting up with the locals (in my broken Spanish), who are so friendly and helpful, visiting colourful handicraft shops, eating out at some amazing restaurants, visiting colonial churches and enjoying the clear skies and beautiful weather. Do visit the Qorikancha complex, ruins at Sacsayhuaman and walk up to the artistic neighbourhood of San Blas. There is also a museum for chocolate called Choco Museo which has workshops on chocolate making. I didn’t indulge in the workshop but I thought it would make a fun activity for couples, plus great chocolate products for sale. Also note that it gets quite cold in the evening and at night, so dress in layers. I also went for a day tour of the Sacred Valley that surrounds Cusco. It starts with a visit to the handicraft market and the Inca ruins at Pisac. The tour then winds through gorgeous valleys along the sacred Urubamba River to the ruins at Ollantaytambo. ere there is a temple dedicated to the Sun which was one of the most important shrines for the Incas. As I climbed and perched myself at the top of the ruins, I could feel myself going inwards and feeling transported to another time. It was a surreal experience and I snapped out of it when I realized that I had to climb down within 10 mins or else I would miss my bus. The last stop on the tour was this tiny, weaving village of Chinchero. We got a demo from the local Andean ladies in their colourful costumes on how to wash, dye and weave wool and the difference between sheep wool and alpaca wool. One lady even spoke English and it was so interesting to watch the process. As you are surrounded by a plethora of handmade woollen products, you don’t appreciate the effort and time that goes into making even a pair of woollen gloves, until you witness a small part of that process. Chinchero is also one of the best and the cheapest places to buy woollen garments in southern Peru. Next day I took the morning train to the town of Aguas Calientes, which sits at the base of Machu Pichhu. IS lOVE THE ANSWER? Danl Tetley speaks with NYC street performer, Matthew Silver, who is on a mission to spread humour and a universal message of LOVE through his art. It would appear the world is becoming more accepting of harmony and joy, pulling communites into smaller, friendlier groups. Perhaps NOW is the time indeed for a LOVE Revolution...

M

atthew, thank you for taking some time from performing and sharing your pearls of wisdom with us... I believe the UK is ready. For those of you who are not familiar with Matthew Silver, New York street performer and creator of Love Portal and The Wackadoodle Movement – you soon will be... and what a ride it will be. Welcome! Let me start by giving you a fitting introduction. Matthew Silver has been performing on the streets of New York for the last 9 years. He is an artist specialising in adlibbed, audience participating, improvised comedy. At first glance he appears lost in his own mind. But what he is trying to promote through his many animated performances is self-liberation, acceptance, gratitude, kindness, laughter and above all - love. With a string of one liners and anecdotes fast becoming recognised globally (bkawk being the most familiar) his aim is to unite people by encouraging a world of non-judgement through a peaceful revolution starting with the self.

Matthew, I instantly connected with the message you were putting ‘out there’ on your ‘Unexpected Citizen’ video and I know I›m not the only one. How does it make you feel to know that you’re having such a positive impact on people? It feels good because the cosmic forces did all the work. I just happened to be there and so did the NYU undergrad Rony Portillo who I didn’t know at the time. So we had no idea the video would have such a large reach. Usually the best things are like that. Organic. It wouldn’t be the same if the video was produced from a known name. When I was questioned for the video, I treated the filmmakeras I would treat any person, I would street perform in front of. With a lot of wackadoodle love and a positive message to share among the world. I go all out when I perform. So it feels good, that I gave my best, to a random person rather a business like NY times.

C

an I ask why you choose to perform in such micro-pants? You’re certainly giving Peter Stringfellow a run for his money... Do you even know

who he is? wI don’t know who Peter Stringfellow is. I perform in a speedo because I like how my body is hairy, and looks funny. It’s a sight to make people laugh and get attention. And when

I

do get attention, I always make sure people are smiling and having a good time. It’s also my way of celebrating the human body. Most of us cover it with a lot of clothing. The body is nothing to be feared. I’ve heard you speak of fear, that if something scares you – you should do it. Can you expand on this? As a human being we sometimes wonder what our purpose on this planet is. I know that fear is actually a cry for love. Sometimes following your heart, is going towards what’s blocking you the most. Fear is also blockage from following your heart.

We make maps and plans to figure out where to go in life. Goals. To make it easy, one step at a time. Some of us have too BLANK - ISSUE 1 - MAY 2015 PAGE 9

as I possibly can. The other end is that I’m getting too much communication. It’s making me focus too much on the internet when the focus is my street work and making the normal world without technology fun again. That is my main goal. To bring the wacky inner child back to the streets. I’ve also noticed a huge female-fanbase emerging which must feel pretty great! In one of your short films – The

Shadow Monster – there is a reference to ego. How do you honestly think all this admiration will affect you? And have you received any strange things from fans? My ego has definitely gotten excited by the attention. And I’m constantly keeping that thing in check. Because at the end of the day I’m still a person. Random people congratulate me on the street, it feels good. It tells me I’m doing a good work. Nothing too strange. A lot of people just want to take pictures with me or do a video shout out to their friend. The strangest things that happen are via the internet. Facebook only allows 5000 friends and many people are getting upset with me, because I can’t add them. They demand that I remove someone to add someone. That’s pretty aggressive, so ignore that. Tell us a bit about your open-mic nights they look raucous. A lot of times I am loud, my motivation is to make the room feel awkward and then bring it back with laughter. It’s a lot of fun. All my performances are different; I never rehearse, except by being in the moment. The performance is my rehearsal. There doesn’t seem like there is ever time to rehearse in real life unless you’re being paid to do it. Outside of performance what makes you happy? Are you able to give 3 examples of first loves? (These can be anything) And perhaps 3 virtues other than LOVE which resonate with you... what in human nature inspires YOU? A. When I first started making movies, with my mothers vhs video camera, that was a mind blowing experience as a child around 15. I was so inspired that I just kept making one short project after another. My parents gave me the opportunity to always show my work to them and inspired me to keep creating.

I like to confuse people in my film work and performance what is real and what isn’t.

“The first girl I dated. I was a late bloomer, I didn’t start seeing women until I was 28 - I’m 35 now” I’m inspired by peoples need to act silly and unleash their inner wacky child. I see you did a radio interview with the Paradigm Shift guys who are big on community and consciousness. How would you explain these things to someone who is maybe only at the beginning of a personal awakening?

H

ow do you see your immediate and long term future professionally? More importantly, where do you want to go with it? I want to use my performance skills to help boost up love awareness. I believe the weirder and more laughable I keep it, the better I can help love become the reality. Life is a paradox and it’s already the reality. My job is to keep reminding people over and over and over again. As humans we forget sometimes, we’re here to remind each other what’s good in this world. Can you give us a little background info? Who were you growing up, What were your influences?

I was born in Bergenfield, NJ. I always look to act out as clown for attention. I wanted to be the guy who made people laugh. Whenever I saw a Jim Carrey, Steve Martin, movie I flipped out. Entertaining people was important to me. I wanted to become a child star, eventually in High school I started making my movies, I taught myself how to perform and become the wackadoodle I’ve always wanted to, through film. I was able to cater the films to my performance. Robin Williams was a hero to me, when he did the movie Fisher King; he played a street character that lived in his own world of knights, princesses and dragons. It was one of the funniest roles I thought he played at the time. Here are some of my early high school videos; Disco Power was probably inspired by Jim Carrey. http://vimeo.com/8741545 Journey men, was probably inspired by Robin Williams from the Fisher King. http://youtu. be/kYwC3n7DDhk

“We can’t

judge people, because if you do, you hinder their ability to find real love in life”

In an interview you referred to dealing with self-criticism. That you are always working on not judging yourself or what you do. It was an incredibly honest insight; of course, this is always the best place to begin when learning how to love yourself. What advice do you have for your fans regarding similar issues? I’d tell people that judgement is a thing we were taught to do and it isn’t real. It’s silly mind chatter. There is healthy criticism and then there is judgment that makes people depressed and discourages people from ever starting again. We want to inspire people never to give up and reach their full potential. The truth is anything is possible. Judgement is fear based. Fear is an illusion love is the only thing that’s real. Fear is cry for love. People think love is a completely positive thing, it’s a spectrum. Love is a cycle, a process. We can’t judge people, because if you do, you hinder their ability to find real love in life. Love (people, life, animals) is meant to be in everybody’s life. You need patience and awareness to see the love that is already there. If you judge, your thinking, creating blocks to your awareness of its eternal presence. wIn a world gone mad there is a lot of irony when others refer to you as being insane. So many boundaries need to be broken, sentient values re-discovered and acts of genuine kindness re-introduced as standard – do you feel we are able to reach a Utopian society? If so, then how?

PAGE 12 BLANK - ISSUE 1 - MAY 2015

And is that why you are fast becoming a gardener of the soul by planting seeds of love through your comedy and windows of prophecy?

B

y being a clown that inspires love, I will help plant seeds at an increased rate. The truth is the messages of love are already planted; the fact that my last video went viral is a sign that people love, love. We are creatures of the heart and we’re here to inspire that in our brothers and sisters. I’ve been given a gift as an artist; it’s my responsibility to spread the good word. I believe we can reach Utopian society, because it hasn’t happened yet. We are destined for this to happen. We have the technology to help us do it. It’s just a matter of time. Lastly – Do you have a favourite joke to leave your fans with? It could even be one you heard as a child.

Who knows if you live again. Fart your heart out NOW!!! B-kawk! Well... what can I say? If you have found yourself here, reading, absorbing, understanding – it could be you are already on a fabulous journey of discovery. What Matthew achieves next, who can say? All I know is that he has balls of steel and a mountainous personality. He’s an inspiration, and do you know why? Because he’s not constrained by the idealism’s set by others, he’s free and if

you have any sense – you’ll look for your own outlet of brilliance and help become part of the growing family of lovers and the loved. Big love guys. Be free, be happy – be love!

Meet Gary Cullen aka VEGAN SURFER

If you love cruelty-free food, the Irish coastline AND a gorgeous smile on a handsome face... Read on, but be warned - This story may make you HAPPY BLANK - ISSUE 1 - MAY 2015 PAGE 15

by Paige Furzer Images: Gary Cullen

Vegan Surfer Gary Cullen grew up in a small town in Ireland surrounded by forest, fields and rivers -- moving from the rural side of Ireland through to the little surfer’s hamlet of Bundoreum. Fitness fanatic Gary has spent his years hiking, surfing and promoting veganism around Ireland and now further afield. Gary’s first experiences of surfing were on the southwest coast of Ireland on the dingle peninsula -- a beautiful part of Ireland where the unique experiences of the waves started off his passion. Following this he opened a café when he was just 22 and not long after he had his son. Gary has always enjoyed the outdoors and being amongst nature and through surfing it’s helped open his eyes to the immense power that nature holds. Today, Gary spends his time running a hostel in Donegal, Ireland where many surfers and those with an adventurous spirit stop off to get involved. It offers a friendly family atmosphere and indulges both established surfers and beginners in the popular sports culture. In his younger years Gary trained as a Beach Lifeguard and Surf Instructor with the Donegal PAGE 16 BLANK - ISSUE 1 - MAY 2015

Adventure Centre, he was a resident in the hostel and grew to love the building -- recognising the potential it had. “I viewed the hostel how I view health on some level, to maintain a high level and always strive to improve.” Although Gary enjoys adrenalin-related sports such as snowboarding and surfing he is also trained in Jiu Jitsu -- the gentler form of martial arts. When isn’t getting lost in the Irish waves he also enjoys practicing Chi Gung and Tai Chi. So we now know where the Surfer part of the nickname Vegan Surfer comes from - what about the vegan part? Gary is passionate about his health and also cares for the animals and world we share with nature. Gary feels strongly about one thing -to reduce suffering in the world. ‘Food production is ingrained into our lives and happens on such a massive scale that it is hard for some people to regard it as violent when they see it as a normal part of life. We should be striving to create a compassionate environment for all the beings of this planet’. For Gary the vegan life style is an appropriate way to extend the massive gratitude he feels for the amazing life he has and all of nature’s wonders that continues to fill his days. Veganism is a way of saying thank you

“Yes, I feel that in many

ways all other beings are a reflection of our own self, and to hurt others is

to also hurt yourself

to all beings, both animals and plants. From there it became quickly evident that the vegan path impacts positively on many aspects of our existence, planetary and human. The vegan lifestyles give him the ability to create new tastes and combinations using a huge variety of naturally delicious ingredients without the unnecessary extra of exploitation and cruelty. “Yes, I feel that in many ways all other beings are a reflection of our own self, and to hurt others is to also hurt yourself.” Are we all connected? Gary says yes. All things, all beings are connected at a fundamental level. He believes that how we interact with this world is a reflection on how we feel towards ourselves. We should be compassionate towards ourselves and the other species of this world. When you’re vegan you don’t eat “just vegetables” as some may tease. Gary’s nailed it, spending a lot of time researching nutrition he managed to understand our basic nutritional needs as well as how to source all ingredients through a plant based diet -- cruelty-free being the basis. Although at first

he found it hard to source foods without animal products he discovered that keeping it varied was key, and, from having an enormous passion for cooking it made creating delicious, balanced dishes much easier. ‘Experimentation always brings great results.” For him it all starts with the mind and perception and once he had made the decision to go vegan his positivity and passion contributed to a consistent feeling of happiness and contentment. Vegans are frequently misunderstood as plant eaters with a passion for animal rights. While many vegans do feel passionately about animals, its time for others to see that a vegan diet and lifestyle go way beyond animal rights. Following a healthy, balanced vegan diet ensures a number of positive benefits too; an increase in energy, a general feeling of well being, quicker recovery from sports, and better digestion are just a few of the beneficial outcomes which Gary has noticed since his lifestyle changed. People believe that as a vegan it can help us to learn quicker, giving clarity and improving creativity, and with increased researches into new foods helps it is enabling us to understand food more openly and with conscience. Gary runs Vegan Surf weekends from his hometurf. These popular events involve activities such as surfing whilst promoting the vegan lifestyle in the hope that he can show people why leaving meat and dairy behind can actually give you a nutritional advantage. He is currently working on a recipe book in the hope that people will enjoy creating tasty, clean and healthy foods and hopefully encourage people to join him on his own journey of discovery. His hard work and love for the environment has definitely paid off, he has recently introduced some vegan health foods to local gyms and jiu jitsu clubs, MUNKI Protein Balls and Chocolate Tofu Fudge have been a great hit and include a huge amount of nutritional value. Gary makes going vegan look easy… and it can be with the help of other passionate vegans just like Gary offering help and guidance where needed. Go Vegan.

We’re here to put them to rest with the science-sound evidence of the health benefits of coconut oil. Burns Fat “A saturated fat burning fat?” the skeptics may say. Yes! There are now two human tested studies on the fat-burning qualities of coconut oil. One was done by Universiti Sains Malaysia and shows that 2 tablespoons of coconut oil a day will slim down your belly fat. Improves Memory Scientific journal Neurobiology of Aging published one study in 2006 proving medium chain triglycerides, like those found abundant in coconut oil, increases ketone bodies in subjects with Alzheimer’s disease or mild cognitive impairment. Heals Wounds Coconut oil has been used to heal wounds for centuries. But in 2010, Skin Pharmacol Physiol published a study that finally clarified the reason why coconut oil is such a powerful healing agency. Natural Medical Alternative Researchers Intahphuak, Khonsung, and Panthong proved in 2010 that coconut oil has great anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and fever-reducing abilities. Reduces Swollen Prostate A popular 2007 study shows that coconut oil has the power to reduce testosterone-induced prostate growth. Treats Fungal Infections 52 forms of Candida species were exposed to coconut oil in an important 2004 study by the Department of Medical Microbiology & Parasitology at the University College Hospital. They were all susceptible to the oil, especially Candida albicans. Researchers had this to say about coconut oil’s anti-fungal properties: “Coconut oil should be used in the treatment of fungal infections in view of emerging drug-resistant Candida species.” Protects the Skin A human study done in 2004 states that coconut oil efficiently blocks UV rays by 30% and protects skin damaging effects from the sun. These are only some of benefits of coconut oil and to fully grasp just how great this oil is, you need to try it for yourself! It’s many other forms, such as coconut milk and water, are also proven to be highly beneficial in living a healthy lifestyle.

Adversity and Mee Why Dartmoor Zoo’s Appeal Means More Than Money

Film: We Bought a Zoo based on the book by Benjamin Mee Starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson

A recent Crowdfund appeal to aid Devon’s Dartmoor Zoo transition from business to charity status has snared media attention, throwing owner Benjamin Mee and his fight for survival into the limelight once more. This kind of attention is not new to the Mee family who have a strong international profile due to the blockbuster success of film, ‘We Bought a Zoo’ which centred loosely on their real experiences back in 2006. They’ve stared into the bleak face of adversity more than most, enduring heart-felt tragedy and more tests of faith than they dare count, but this time long-term viable solutions are being put together to ensure the future of the zoo is secure, hopefully allaying further uncertainties. Mee says, “Turning an existing business into a charity is really hard but with the last three years being some of the wettest, affecting visitor numbers through the gate dramatically and with costs rising quicker than we can keep up, it’s a necessary decision I’ve had to make for the sake of the animals here.” It raises big questions for Ben and his committed PAGE 20 BLANK - ISSUE 1 - MAY 2015

team who dedicate hours of back-breaking work into the continuing project which offers a masters/under-graduate research facility for local universities, including Plymouth, who conduct animal behaviour and intelligence studies, and an on-going rehabilitation and conservation programme which encompasses a vision of both community and eco-led longevity. Most zoos have a two year financial reserve so that they have time to fundraise and draw on other sources of revenue, but Dartmoor’s thirty-three acres live very much on a month-by-month basis and, with increasing running costs due to an unsteady economy, a more stable, cost-effective strategy is seen as the savvy option when so much is a stake. The mounting pressure and struggle in complying with regulations signified the need for change and that is why Ben now shares the dynamics of Dartmoor’s only animal sanctuary with a board of trustees. Simon Almond – owner Devon Contract Waste, Shelly Monk – Director Surplus Rescue, and, John Wotton, Chairman and former trustee of Edinburgh Zoo each bring invaluable knowledge, resources and an equally green vision -- all creating an exciting outlook for the park’s sustainability. Ben and his children, Milo 13 and, Ella 11, live and breathe the care of over two hundred animals with a vigour and commitment which is enviable. While the

zoo is primarily a business -- it is much more than that to them and often cuts into valuable family time, keeping them busy with duties ranging from visitor talks to mucking out the enclosures. The remarkable thing is how committed they are when it comes to the ethics of why they are there in the first place and Ben openly admits he hasn’t taken a wage since 2006, when he first took on the Zoo, ploughing over a million pounds of his own money back into the pot. Fighting to keep the zoo running and continuing the success of the Mee’s dreams of one day releasing endangered species born in captivity into the wild, is hoped by all to be a seamless extension of the passion behind his original business strategy and it

is not difficult to see why. Ben has insight, drive and a warrior-like fervency regarding contribution to the global awakening which reveres the idealism of eco-friendly living. This means low waste and a cleaner recycling mentality in an attempt to get the zoo to ‘wash its own face’. This is something that his three newly appointed trustees are offering through their own waste management and recycling businesses. Ben says, “Surplus materials tend to be thrown away because the accounting process considers them waste and can’t put them back in the depo. Incredibly, building companies tend to over order by ten percent and simply chuck it away. It’s called BLANK - ISSUE 1 - MAY 2015 PAGE 21

waste but to us it’s a brand new pallet of bricks, it’s these same types of materials which enabled us to build the new Meerkat enclosure. What the trustees are bringing to the table means we don’t have to cut corners while responsibly sourcing materials other people don’t use.” Ben’s children are actively involved in raising awareness too, recently airing a BBC documentary called, My Life. It highlights their conservation attempts and why keeping the animals safe, healthy and happy also means evolving ideas and sourcing mates for existing animals with a view to help rare breeds from disappearing. Ella says, “The conservation of the zoo is really important because it helps rare animals to stay alive.” Milo then adds, “And it’s really important to keep animals around because a world without animals really isn’t worth living in, so we want to keep conservation going.” The global respect Ben and his family receive, including that of their supportive network of volunteers and dedicated staff is overwhelming and helps drive that ethos into the heart of Devon, giving back to the surrounding communities by offering their time, free-entry for locals and a comprehensive education all on a personal level – it’s what makes this zoo unique and special. This is why charitable status is vital and things are in place for it to be up and running as a charity from 1 Jan 2015. There’s already been a huge international response to the Crowdfund appeal which aims to raise £1,600,000 before Christmas 2014 and there have been some astoundingly generous donations. If you would like to be involved in the volunteer programme which is a fundamental part of the zoo’s survival, or donate through the Crowdfund appeal, all information can be found on Dartmoor Zoo’s website. http://www.dartmoorzoo.org.uk/

Sound of the Sirens Respond to Homelessness to do what they do best.. the acoustic duo are set to sing for charity once again

Christmas is a time of glittery preparation, hearty celebration and of bringing families and communities closer. Many of us will be busy buying presents and spending more than is necessary for that one, special day. For those who are homeless however -- it’s an entirely different story. Embracing the goodwill of the coming season, Sound of the Sirens recently approached homeless organisation, St Petrock’s -- determined to make a difference this year. Acoustic duo Abbe Martin and Hannah Wood are a phenomenal folk/rock band that continue to make Exeter locals dizzy with their colossal success around the UK. They project a real sense of

spirit during their performances and are fast becoming a national, household name. Well known for their foot-stomping melodies, self-penned songs and enigmatic presence, the hypnotic trails they’re leaving in their talented wake are pricking ears within the vast music arena. They have endorsements coming thick and fast, recently supported by Freshman Guitars whose artist roster includes big talents like Ben Howard. They boast a following that are as dedicated and engaging as they are on-stage and it’s getting them noticed -sealing top gigs with big names and raising curious eyebrows from an array of music publications. They’ve been together since 2009,

originally as a trio, but their success as a duo particularly over the last two years has seen them rise as a prominent force across the UK. They’ve released two albums, proudly produced several videos through Pangaea TV and have even bigger plans for 2015. The girls came up with the idea to write a Christmas song and dedicate it to those who wouldn’t get the same festive experience they would. Both girls brim with a contagious compassion and wanted to take that idea further, deciding to record and release their newest song ‘Next Year’ as a single -- with a view to raise both money and awareness. Abbe says, “We were trying to write a song around the line ‘The lesson we learn is presents are people not things’ -- that’s when St Petrock’s came to mind. I remember meeting a woman on Christmas Eve two years ago who had, at the time, been successfully re-homed through the centre. The sense of community I felt on such a significant day of the year really touched me. It’s a great charity on our doorstep and we’d love to help.” St Petrock’s is Devon’s only homeless centre, with the exception of three smaller organisations in Torquay, Plymouth and Barnstaple. They provide hot meals and drinks, clothing, shower facilities as well as food for accompanying dogs, a laundry service and sleeping bags. They also aim to find accommodation for all clients as well as supporting those already in accommodation or requiring assistance in maintaining tenancies. They’re an independent charity and have to source

between £400,000 – 500,000 each year just to maintain services. Gill Luckings, external communications manager of St Petrock’s says, “It’s wonderful that young people want to support us, reaching an audience we couldn’t and reminding others of the growing problems our homeless face at Christmas and with a homeless rise of 34 % seen over the last 4 years it couldn’t have come at a better time. All of our charity’s clothing is donated by the local communities, we’re open between 8.30am -4pm, Monday to Friday so please drop by with any unwanted items – all winter wear will be gratefully received, especially men’s boot’s and sleeping bags.” Abbe and Hannah will be recording and producing their fundraiser single at the Exeter Phoenix Arts Centre and performing it live at Timepiece on Black Friday -- 19th December. There’s a small entry fee that will also be added to the charity pot and the girls will be supported by two other Devon acts – ‘Haunt the Woods’ and ‘Wildwood Kin’. The single which will also have a surprise, bonus track featuring the Siren’s supporting bands will go on-sale the same night, with 50% of the proceeds being donated to St Petrock’s, enforcing the charity motto -- Positively Responding to Homelessness. It’s set to be a foot-stomping event -- so go along and show your support. Follow all news from Sound of the Sirens and St Petrock’s below -- and be part of the positive change, too. http://www.soundofthesirens.net/ http://stpetrocks.org.uk/

Geiranger, Norway

As you look up the Geiranger fjords it’s a sight to see. It’s a jewel in the crown of the Norwegian fjords It stretches 10 miles inland and is fed by numerous waterfalls including The Suitor, The Bridal Veil and the Seven Sisters. It’s a popular destination for cruise ships and the amazing surroundings dwarf the biggest of ships that sail through. You have the opportunity to kayak up the fjords, which is something to recommend to everyone. Being surrounded by that atmosphere at the size of the mountains it takes a while for it all to sink in of where you are and what you are doing. Especially with a cruise ship docked in the sight of it moving towards you is exciting and scary but something you have to experience yourself. If you are on land you can have a great view of the fjords as you drive up the through the hair pin bends with up to 36 but as you look down and along the fjords it truly is magical and again another camera moment to capture the sea being so calm and relaxing you couldn’t imagine it being anything but perfect. The landscape is like a fairy tale with the mountain tops covered in snow and the deep blue water.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland is a gorgeous place and not one you would expect to enjoy as much as you will. It’s a small city but it has a lot to offer. It holds some of the most beautiful scenery that is at every turn. But being the capital in the ‘land of fire and ice’ you wouldn’t expect anything different. The capital has a reputation of being a truly cultural cosmopolitan city that doesn’t hold much ice at all. A popular destination when visiting Reykjavik is the blue lagoon geothermal spa as you get to soak in therapeutic water, which is a baby blue colour. The minerals bubbles from up to 1,250 metres bellows the earth’s surfaces. If you are into architecture then The Pearl is a landmark you must go to visit. It has a revolving restaurant for a unique dining experience and the best way to see the surroundings is on the observation platform as it shows of the city’s panoramic view. Whilst in the capital you can do anything from diving in the waters of Silfra to tours of the volcanoes. The city is surrounded by many natural wonders and caters to everyone’s needs so you will always find something to do no matter what you are in too.
