STARK COUNTY COLLEGIATE

FAIRS

In October, C&A had the exciting opportunity to attend several college fairs, where we focused on providing students with essential mental health resources. Recognizing that the transition to college can be overwhelming, we aimed to equip students with the tools and support they need to thrive both academically and emotionally. This includes providing students with contacts for crisis support, as well as key wellness tips to help relieve stress and anxiety all year long.

Dear Community Leaders,

As we enter the holiday season—a time of gratitude, hope, and reflection—I am filled with immense joy and appreciation for the incredible impact our community has on the children and families we serve at Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health (C&A).

The holidays are often marked by moments of great celebration and togetherness, but they can also bring reminders of the challenges many in our community face. For the children and families navigating mental health struggles, the season’s expectations can sometimes feel overwhelming. Yet, it’s also a time when the power of compassion and community shines most brightly.

At C&A, our mission is built on the idea that together, we can provide compassionate, accessible mental health care that helps children and families not only persevere but thrive. As we look ahead to 2025, I’m inspired by the opportunity to continue building a future rooted in hope and healing, and I invite all of you to be part of this meaningful journey.

This season, and in the year ahead, our collective kindness can be a catalyst for joy and resilience. Every act of generosity—whether through donations, volunteering or spreading awareness—creates ripples of positive change. It enables us to provide vital services like counseling, crisis intervention and prevention programs that empower young people to heal and grow. Together, we are building a stronger, more compassionate community where every child and family has the chance to flourish.

As we embrace the spirit of the holidays, let us celebrate the joy that comes from making a difference in the lives of others. Giving is about creating connections and nurturing the hope that drives our mission forward. Each gift, no matter the size, helps bring light and opportunity to those who need it most.

From all of us at C&A, thank you for your ongoing dedication and belief in our work. Your generosity and support infuse our mission with the strength to keep growing and evolving. Wishing you a safe, warm and joy-filled holiday season. Together, we can continue to build a community full of promise, healing and hope.

Warm Regards,

STARK COUNTY COLLEGE FAIRS

Students who attended any of the various wellness fairs had a variety of activities to choose from, all designed to encourage mental wellness and stress relief. Participants challenged themselves with a game of resiliency Jenga, where each block represents a small but meaningful action to build mental strength. They also created a breathing bracelet, a simple tool that reminds students to pause and focus on mindful breathing when stress levels rise. For those looking to spread positivity, there was an opportunity to write a thoughtful note for a fellow student—spreading kindness and encouragement within their community. Other hands-on activities include crafting a stress ball, an easy-to-make tool for calming anxiety, or joining in a fun dice game that offers playful ways to learn about crisis resources. For students on the go, there was also the chance to swing by and pick up a self-care bag, generously packed with resources to help manage daily challenges and support mental health initiatives.

A heartfelt thank you to StarkMHAR, Coleman Health Services, NAMI, Stark Help Central, Light After Loss, the Ohio Program for Campus Safety & Mental Health (OPCSM), and all the colleges and universities that contributed their time, resources and support to make our wellness events both enjoyable and impactful for students.

Thanks to a generous $2,000 grant from OPCSM, C&A was able to host these wellness fairs, offering valuable resources and support to help students prioritize their mental and emotional well-being. We are deeply grateful for the collaboration and dedication of these partners, whose efforts made a significant difference in the lives of those we serve.

ELECTION ANXIETY

The 2024 election has brought a lot of fear and stress into the lives of people throughout the country. A recent survey by the American Psychological Association found that 77% of adults in the US are worried about the future of the nation, 73% reported feeling stressed out about the economy and 69% reported feeling stressed about the presidential election. When adults are feeling this high of a level of stress, you can bet that children and adolescents are feeling it too.

WHY ARE PEOPLE FEELING SO MUCH ANXIETY?

Regardless of their political leanings or which candidates they prefer, most people in the US agree that the stakes are high in this election. Uncertainty activates anxiety, especially when the thing we are uncertain about is believed to be extremely important. There is a lot that is uncertain at present. Who will win? What will they do when they take office? What will the candidate who doesn’t win do? What will other people do? Will there be a peaceful transfer of power?

Change also causes anxiety. On the national as well as the state and local levels, elections usher in change. We feel anxiety when the changes that are anticipated are not ones that we want. We also feel anxiety when we believe that change is needed but not likely to happen. Uncertainty about whether change will happen, what will change and how quickly changes will happen all add to feelings of stress and anxiety.

BENEFIT OF DECLUTTERING

Going for a walk is a powerful mood booster because it combines physical activity with mental relaxation. Walking helps release endorphins, which elevate mood and reduce stress. It provides a change of scenery, offering a mental break and enhancing clarity. The simple act of moving, especially outdoors, can increase energy levels and combat feelings of fatigue or depression. Additionally, walking allows time for reflection and can foster creativity, contributing to a more positive outlook.
