Fresh fruits and your health

Fresh Fruits and Your Health Every day, your body is exposed to free radicals, unstable molecules that can damage the cells. Your body produces free radicals as part of normal metabolism. There are also many external sources such as air pollution, alcohol, pesticides, sunlight, tobacco smoke, drugs and certain foods. To combat these free radicals your body needs antioxidants. Antioxidants are scavengers that neutralize free radicals. Although your body produces its own antioxidants, they are often insufficient to protect against the onslaught of free radicals we all experience. We all know fruits are good for us. It has been shown that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of some types of cancers and other chronic diseases. In fact, scientists have already linked free radicals to many different types of diseases, such as cancer and heart disease, even aging. Click here know more about lavita

Consuming a diet rich in natural antioxidants, like those that come from fruits and vegetables, may help protect against free radical damage. With uniquely high levels of powerful antioxidants, certain fruits and their juices have demonstrated a superior ability to neutralize harmful free radicals. These are not your average fruits, they help cleanse and purify the body.

But do you know how? They contain powerful nutrients and have more naturally-occurring antioxidants per gram than most other fruit.

These antioxidants are called phytochemicals and they protect plants from harmful elements in the environment, like ultraviolet radiation and pests. They also provide plants with their sensory characteristics such as color, flavor and smell. Polyphenols are an important class of phytochemical, and tannins, particularly punicalagin, anthocyanins and ellagic acid are all members of the polyphenol family. While many fruits contain some of these antioxidants, pomegranates have large amounts of all three. Pomegranate seems to be the top performer in terms of antioxidant potency, defined as the ability to neutralize free radicals. Several other fruits are also high in antioxidants such as: Concord grape, Acai, Blackberry, Blueberry, Cranberry, and even Red Wine. Antioxidants include some vitamins and other natural components of foods like flavonoids and vitamin C, which helps to strengthen the immune system. So now you are probably thinking, great, but what the heck does all that mean? Well, these fruits, as well as others, should be considered as part of a healthy diet, with as little as a 2 oz. serving of juice per day added to your diet offering the beneficial effects.

All the evidence is in the old adage, "An apple a day keeps the Doctor away," goes a long way toward good health. Now we have more choices and flavors to satisfy our palette in the quest for healthy eating. The old favorites are still good for you, but try some of them all. I pick several and mix them for unique tastes and beneficial effects, but you can buy many juices either alone or already mixed to enjoy. So stop by your favorite grocery store or produce market, and pick up some fresh fruits or juices. I know I will be there because my favorite is in season now!
