There are a few different ways to clean a belly button piercing which will help to prevent infection. The most common way is to use a mild soap and water. This can be the same soap that you use on your hands, but a dye and fragrance free soap is best.

You need to start out by rubbing soap gently around the piercing making sure to cover the barbell and wiggle it back and forth just a bit to make sure that you do not miss any spots. If

there are any dry parts on the barbell you must be sure to completely clean them off as a build up can lead to infection.

Once you have cleaned the area with soap, you just have to rinse off all of the soap being careful not to pull or tug at the piercing and making sure to completely rinse any soap that may have gotten into the pierced hole.

After rinsed, dry with a clean towel. You should not use a paper towel or Kleenex as these can leave behind particles and pieces. Once dry, be sure to cover the piercing with a loose shirt to help keep out any unwanted matter.

A fresh piercing is like an open wound. You do not want anything to get into it as this can lead to infection. It should be kept clean, dry and covered to allow for the best healing possible.

If you clean your piercing, and notice a white or clear liquid that is at the opening, this is normal and means that your piercing is healthy and healing. If the liquid is green, or yellow, this could mean infection and you should keep it very clean and watch for worsening symptoms of infection.

A belly button piercing can take up to a year to fully heal so be patient before attempting to change your belly button ring. Changing your ring too soon can allow for bacteria to enter the wound. Before you change your ring, you should always feel and make sure that your current belly ring is not sore or tender at all.
