Keeping safe on your boating holidays

Keeping Safe On Your Boating Holidays I see a lot of stupid practices when I watch holidaymakers boating on their holidays. Many stupid behaviours, actually putting peoples lives in danger, whilst those guilty of behaving stupidly are blissfully unaware. Canal or river boating is dangerous. It is great fun, and a wonderful vacation, however needs to be respected and safety needs to be thought about seriously at all times. I have listed a kind of boat safety checklist, for those about to go on a boating holiday, to read and "take on board". There are six main areas to be aware of. 1. Falls. These can happen due to erratic steering, collisions or just because someone loses their balance too close to the edge of the boat. Canals and rivers are dangerous places, with unpredictable currents and levels of pollution. Life jackets should be worn at all times when out on deck and travelling, especially for children. Those steering the boats need to be careful not to do so in an erratic manner. Those who are inexperienced should not be to intent on being speedy. An awareness of other boat traffic will lessen the chances of collisions. Children need to know how to behave when they are outside of the cabin.

2. Crushing. This can occur if someone slips into the water as you are mooring or colliding with something, trapping a limb between the boat and the side of the other object. A boat is very heavy and moving. This would be a very serious injury should it happen, so no one should try to climb ashore until the boat is still. Children should be reminded of this, and pets monitored. Collisions can also cause crushing should someone fall into the water between two boats.

3. Fires. Gas is explosive. There will be various flammable items on your boat. There wherabouts needs to be known, and adequate fire control needs to be available. Keeping flames away from these areas should be an obvious ask.

4. Collisions. This is a very real danger. I have witnessed people driving boats looking sideways, (taking in the scenery no doubt), as they do for long periods of time. During peak holiday times there are many other people boating as well as you. Collisions can throw passengers into the water, dammage boats seriously, ( think Titanic on a smaller scale), and also crush passengers who fall between the two boats. Rivers and canals are big enough to avoid colliding with other traffic. Concentration when driving is essential.

5. Vandalism. Yes, there will be idiots who will throw stones and bottles at you from bridges and the banks of the rivers etc. Just be cautious of these clowns, and give them as wide a berth as possible. You don't want stones and debris copming through the boats windows with people inside.

6. Operating Injuries. People tear muscles, put out backs and generally injure themselves all the time boating. Opening locks if you are on a canal holiday, or walking boats through tunnels can be physically demanding. Treat this work as you would any exercise. Do not bite off more than you can chew. Make sure you are warmed up sufficiently to take on whatever physical task you need to. You do not want to end up flat on your back due to injuring yourself walking through a tunnel, with half your boating holiday ahead of you.

These are the biggest dangers to a boating trip. Just being vigilant and sensible, really, is the main prevention of such dangers. Remember that you really don't want yourself, or anyone with you to fall into the water, or crash with other boaters. Keep the speed to one you can handle easily, there is no rush. You can enjoy your boating holiday without risk and harm, as long as you understand the possible dangers that are around you as you travel along. It is a good idea to appoint someone to be in charge, (as captain maybe), so that they can make sure that no one puts anyone else in danger. Just make sure that they allow everyone a chance to enjoy the wonderous scenery and wildlife as well as watch out for the possible dangers. Visit speedboat to lembongan to know more about
