What are Volcanoes?

By Daniel Emke

A volcano is sort of like a chimney... 2

A chimney for the earth! 3

A chimney is something that helps let smoke out. 4

The earth has heat and gases inside of it... 5

They need to escape too! 6

The earth is made of layers. 7

On the outside is the crust. 8

The earth’s crust is made up of pieces... 9

Kind of like a puzzle... 10

Because they fit together. 11

When they move, some pieces overlap. 12

In the spaces, magma comes to the surface to escape. 13

Magma is the hot stuff in the center of the earth. 14

When magma reaches the surface it is called lava. 15

When the lava pushes through the spaces its called an eruption. 16

Every time it erupts, it makes the volcano bigger. 17

It takes over 10,000 years for a volcano to grow. 18

“The average volcano erupts about one time every 100 years.” 19

Most of them start in the ocean. 20
