CULACCINO genoa, italy

/ku.la’t͡ːʃi.no/ (noun) a water ring, a mark left on a surface (often wood) by the bottom of a wet glass or vessel Genoa’s longstanding history as a port city invites coastal architecture that acts as a social place of gathering. Between the sea and the mountains, CULACCINO serves the community by providing a place to celebrate Genovese traditions and spark new ideas. The project features open air market space, pop-up restaurants, a culinary school, and terrace views that span the entire city. Utilizing a glulam wood primary structure, the building is a striking example of sustainable building practice to expand its programmatic use as a cultural food hub for the city. The translucent, angular roof structure mimics the mountainous sightlines of Genoa, providing interior shade or external views where necessary. More than just a rest stop, CULACCINO is a place to stay long enough to leave your mark. Whether shopping, eating, or simply enjoying the views, the experience is visually striking, tastefully elegant, and powerfully momumental.

The building features an entirely glulam mass timber primary structure to reflect the focus on mirroring the program’s sustainabie food production efforts with its own building practices. In order to apply the conceptual goals of permeability and translucency, the ground level is open air to invite local vendors and artisans to set up temporary market stalls. The ground level also contains a central public plaza with access to outdoor seating and exterior stairways to the upper levels. Promoting translucency, the angular roof is clad in polycarbonate panels over primarily open air spaces and terraces that highlight natural light, energy efficiency, and views of the city of Genoa.

PYRAMIDAL GLASS The main, double-height space of the building which serves as a social food hub with pop-up vendor spaces is framed by a pyramidal glass facade system. The system acts as a feature wall for the 10-meter high space, casting brilliant shadows across the space at all times during the day. The space is wrapped by an exterior stairway to continue the feel of an indoor-outdoor building, between programmed spaces and open-air terraces.

SACCHARINE north charleston, sc

/’sak(ə)rən/ (adj.) excessively sweet or sentimental Today our urban parks have become some of our most important civic spaces evolving to accommodate a variety of important functions as the primary place for citizens to gather together. Focusing on the principles of civic space, SACCHARINE occupies the Riverfront Park site in North Charleston as an atelier/workshop and exhibition space for community arts programs. The center is aimed at accommodating North Charleston residents of all ages through the arts and education programming conducted by the city. The project highlights developing a dynamic use-program and a resilient design system that employs experimental lightwood framing techniques. Inspired by the sweetgrass basket weaving traditions of Charleston, SC, SACCHARINE takes on a woven organic form reminiscent of the long-standing sentimental traditions of the locality.

WELTANSCHAUUNG berlin, germany

/’velt.än.SHoueNG/ (noun) a particular philosophy or view of life; the worldview of an individual or group Historically, the library has served as a monumental building typology transforming the way people use the built environment. The Berlin State Library is a perfect example of this because it is a building that cannot be separated from its time or place in the heart of Berlin. The task was to research the building and architect and present the findings visually to best display and uncover the architect’s motives behind their design choices. Hans Scharoun built the library with intention of uniting Germany and developing a cultural center in Berlin, reflecting his worldview of unity.WELTANSCHAUUNG is an analysis of the library and its site through historical and contemporary mapping, interior analysis analysis through photograph and collage, and exterior analysis through sketch and digital rendering.

BOOLEAN abstract workshop

/’boolēən/ (adj.) denoting a system of algebraic notation used to represent logical propositions, especially in computing and electronics Similar to Venn diagrams, Boolean operations are fundamentally based on the same concept: two shapes overlap each other in space such that there is a zone of intersection. Within this operation, each shape can be used to carve out of the other. BOOLEAN investigates how this carving technique applies to spatial understanding as architects have used this methodology for a variety of design opportunities dating back to ancient stereotomy. With a particular workflow of physical to digital to physical, the workshop focuses on the transition between analog and digital tooling to achieve design results and visualize potential inhabitable settings.

PETRICHOR clemson, sc

/’pe.trīkôr/ (noun) a pleasant smell that frequently accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather In 2011, the Lee III addition to the School of Architecture at Clemson University was completed by alumnus Thomas Phifer. Although the building’s organizational parti is simple and elegant, the practical/ traditional concept of a porch that initially inspired Phifer was lost. The task of this short, fast-paced “esquisse” exploration was to design an entrance canopy for Lee III to protect against rainwater that is insufficiently contained by the current overhead brise soleil. The constraint was a single sheet of paper in order to gain an understanding of folded structure and the relationship between flat sheet material and three dimensional form. PETRICHOR works within this constraint to add a dynamic and practical element to the Lee III facade.

/dē’kōded/ (adj.) the state of being converted (a coded message) into intelligible language The idea and perception of work has yielded many varieties of office designs over the course of history. The studio began by researching the psychology of work and how that can impact the design of an office building. Located in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY, the studio was posed with the challenge of designing a work space that co-aligned with the post-industrial neighborhood and values of the modern office employee. Designed through Grasshopper scripts DECODED meets these challenges by providing a variety of work environments ranging from coworking floors to private office spaces to leisure and social settings. The building also acts as a community center with a public plaza that can bring together and evolve the neighborhood.

The building envelope employs a twisted louver system as the outer skin external to the glass curtain wall that conditions and encloses the internal space. The entire building skin is divided into two-foot vertical subsections that contain the dimensions of the louvers as well as the windows and colored panels utilized in secondary facades. By regulating a standard convention for the entire envelope, the design allows for private office spaces to be shaded and leisure spaces to be open based on the designed twist radius of the louvers. The secondary panels provide complete concealment where necessary according to the internal program and are juxtaposed with the triangulated glass atrium at the core of the building Through Grasshopper point attraction scripts, the coding is able to specifically control the revolutions on the louvers, therefore managing the openings and closings informed by the office program. In terms of the physical model, the Grasshopper script was baked in Rhinoceros and converted to a 3D printing program in order to be constructed as part of the wall section model shown. The entire model as well as detail photographs are depicted.

WANDERLUST genoa, italy

/’wändər,ləst/ (noun) an overwhelming desire to travel During the Spring 2020 semester, I had the opportunity to study abroad through the Clemson Fluid Campus in Genoa, Italy. Though the semester was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the time I spent in Italy remains one of the most important cultural, architectural, and educational opportunities I have experienced. One of the main components of the curriculum for the semester was experiential drawing by going out into the world to observe and draw. The travel experiences and the drawings that resulted were some of the most influential in my architecture career. Shown here are just a few of the products, in a variety of digital and analog mediums and from a variety of countries and cultures, that resulted from a shortened semester truly consumed by WANDERLUST.

CINEPHILIA clemson, sc

/sini’fēliə/ (noun) the term used to refer to a passionate interest in films, film theory, and film criticism As the co-founder and President of Clemson Reel Dialogue, project CINEPHILIA is the realization of a long term passion for film. The club concentrates in critical reception and analysis through meeting 3-4 times a week to discuss films the club votes to watch. Working from an ever-growing watchlist, we have watched over 150 films together as a club, sparking vast evolutions in our understanding of filmmaking, film theory, and film reception. We also developed a production branch that has completed two short films (where I direct photography) with multiple more in the early stages of pre-production. On top of club activites, project CINEPHILIA also encapsulates an ongoing Interdisciplinary Honors research thesis that will exhibit in the Spring 2021 semester. The project titled, Architecture and Cinema: A Curated Timeline of Symbiotic Arts, explores the mutual influence between film and architecture.

MEMORY TRAILS

5 MIN | MYSTERY, THRILLER

Taking place on the trails of upstate South Carolina, a hiker feels he is being stalked as he travels alone. Though he tries to run away from his mysterious past and look for clarity, it seems to follow him the more he tries to run from it, and his search for questions seem not to lie at the end of the trail.

THE ACTOR

p. / 8.2.29

22 MIN | DRAMA

When a potential actor, played by Silver Tripod award-winning Sean Place, meets with a casting director for a role in Frances Fregoli’s new film, there is more than meets the eye during the interview. In this Charlie Kaufman inspired metadrama, the relationship between an actor and director and what it means to “have a role” takes center stage in Eugene-Rocco Utley’s follow up short.

PARANOIA

TBD | HORROR, MYSTERY, THRILLER

Two friends are on a late night jog through the woods when one of them hears a sound among the trees. He believes they see a figure lurking in the darkness so they continue on jogging. While friend one believes the other is just being paranoid, it becomes apparent that this dark figure is following them, and a race out of the woods ensues.

SERENDIPITY

TBD | DRAMA, FANTASY

In this experimental debut from director Danny Jarabek, the nature of human interconnectedness is explored through the lens of a child with a unique ability to view celestial signals. With this knowledge, he is able to challenge the preconceptions of the four dimensions of space and time. What is reality and illusion in the eye of a child is up to the audience to decide.
