History Joliet Catholic Academy is an institution proud of its heritage and tradition. In 1869, the Joliet Franciscans opened St. Francis Academy to young women in the Joliet area. Nearly 50 years later, DeLaSalle High School for boys was founded by the Christian Brothers. In 1933, the Carmelites assumed leadership of DeLaSalle changing the name to Joliet Catholic High School. These three schools are the cornerstones for Joliet Catholic Academy, established as such, on July 1, 1990. JCA is a Roman Catholic college preparatory co-educational high school, co-sponsored by the Joliet Franciscan Sisters and the Carmelites of the Most Pure Heart of Mary. With an enrollment of nearly 900 and a student-teacher ratio of 16:1, personal and individualized attention is afforded to students. Currently, JCA has graduated over 21,000 alumni in the United States and abroad.

Students Enthusiastic, curious, ambitious, spirited and realistic are words that describe Joliet Catholic Academy students. After four years, students are prepared academically to attend a college or university of their choice. Admission to JCA is based on placement test scores, as well as previous academic records. The application form must be completed in order for a student to be considered for admission. In addition, any student hoping to attend JCA must take the placement exam administered at JCA.
Nurturing Minds Joliet Catholic Academy is a fully accredited college preparatory school offering a challenging curriculum that prepares students for continued education and life. To ensure students reach their maximum potential, we offer an individualized college preparatory program to promote critical thinking skills. JCA offers three academic programs. Depending on the strengths of the student, he/she can be placed in the College Prep, Upper College Prep or Honors/Accelerated Program to best meet their needs. Students needing special academic assistance may qualify for JCA’s Learning Resource Program, where students are tutored in small groups by our certified Learning Resource staff.
Curriculum Placement JCA students will be enrolled in one of three available curriculums of study: College Prep, Upper College Prep or Honors/Accelerated. Placement is determined by evidence of the student’s prior academic performance (grades), standardized test scores and teacher recommendations. Students are eligible to enroll in a course outside their designated curriculum based on academic needs, availability of courses needed to meet a graduation requirement, etc. Usually, by the completion of the sophomore year a student’s academic level of aptitude and achievement has been established. Therefore, movement between the curricula, College Prep, Upper College Prep or Honors/Accelerated, will be limited.
Learning Resource Program The Learning Resource Program is designed to meet the needs of students who have been diagnosed with mild to moderate learning disabilities. Students who enter this program will receive supplemental instruction one period a day in a small group setting. Instruction is centered around the materials and academic content of their college preparatory classes. Along with daily support for the LD population, the Learning Resource Program also recognizes and provides accommodation to those students diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.
Advanced Placement and Honors/Accelerated Courses Advanced Placement courses are offered to juniors and seniors in English IV, U.S. Government, Calculus, Biology, European History, U.S. History, and Chemistry. Students in a fourth year of a foreign language may request to take the A.P. Spanish, French, or Latin exam. Honors/Accelerated courses are offered on each level (freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior) in English, Math, Science and Social Studies. Honors courses are also offered for third and fourth year Foreign Language and Studio Art.
Honors Program The intent of the prestigious JCA Honors Program is to challenge academically gifted students and provide them with a demanding program to meet their needs and encourage them to reach their full academic potential. Enrollment in Honors courses and the Honors Program is not synonymous. Freshmen will be placed, based on their placement test scores, in an “Accelerated Prep” curriculum for their first year at JCA. At the end of their freshman year, the student’s performance will be evaluated. Upon the recommendation of the freshman teachers, the Administration will “officially” invite the students to join the Honors Program at the commencement of their sophomore year.

Graduation Requirements Students must earn 25.00 credits to be eligible to receive a JCA diploma. Students must earn 22.00 credits through required coursework. The balance (3.00 credits) must be earned by completing elective courses. Seniors must include one core course (Math, Science, Social Studies, etc.) in their daily schedule in lieu of one elective course. Each student must also complete a minimum of 60 hours of Christian service to an individual or group outside of JCA during their four years. Students often tutor, work at charity events or volunteer at nursing homes to earn their Christian service hours. Technology Our state-of-the-art computer center will enable you to master the basics and beyond, and will keep you on the cutting edge of technology. New programs and courses are added every year to provide our students with what they will need to advance to the next level, beginning with word processing and continuing with how to design and create ads, brochures, newspapers, etc.
Fine Arts The Fine Arts program is an important part of the high school experience; students are encouraged to explore and share their talents. Music, band and art instruction are offered as a four-year program. Drama Club offers opportunities for students who are interested in theatrical productions, through two annual productions, a Fall Play and Spring Musical. The overall goal is to enrich the students academically, spiritually, creatively, and socially.

Spirituality Joliet Catholic Academy strives to develop our students into men and women who will use their lives of faith in Jesus Christ, as manifested in our Carmelite and Franciscan traditions. We strive to empower students to offer their gifts in joyful and loving service to others. As companions with our students, we are committed to creating an environment where students can encounter God through a comprehensive four-year program of religious studies. Each course encourages our students to live Christian values, grow in their spirituality, and become moral and ethical persons.
Campus Ministry Our Campus Ministers work with students on a daily basis to foster their spiritual awareness through daily prayer, liturgical experience, Christian service, and retreats. Our students are challenged to bring a deeper meaning to all aspects of their lives by following the example and teachings of Jesus Christ.
Daily Prayer Each day before announcements and at the beginning of class, students and teachers participate in prayer. Students and families are encouraged to submit intentions for the school community to offer support.
Liturgical Experiences The JCA school community celebrates Mass together through an optional weekly morning Mass and all-school liturgies. Days of reflection and opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation are available to enhance each student’s spiritual life.
Christian Service Joliet Catholic Academy’s prime educational objective is to form men and women willing to transform the world through service to others. The life of St. Francis of Assisi, known for his compassion and service to those less fortunate, and Mary, the Mother of God and Mother of the Church, inspire JCA students to serve others compassionately. Our students must be men and women whose compassion is a paramount character trait, and who are divinely inspired to love God through service to the least of their brothers and sisters. All students are expected to fulfill Christian service requirements each year.
Retreats Freshmen, sophomores and juniors participate in an annual day of renewal. Juniors and seniors have the opportunity to attend an off-campus overnight retreat known as Kairos. The word Kairos means “the Lord’s time.” We offer Kairos as a four-day retreat that gives students an opportunity to explore their own hearts and also draws them closer to God and each other.

Athletics plays an important role in developing the discipline and competitive spirit required for career success. Every student at JCA has excellent opportunities to compete at many levels in more than 20 interscholastic and intramural sports programs. The Angels and Hilltoppers are members of the East Suburban Catholic Conference (ESCC). This is one of the most competitive conferences in the state of Illinois. Team play, sportsmanship and the pursuit of excellence have always been the pledge of the JCA student-athlete. JCA’s teams consistently work hard to achieve national, state, district, regional, sectional and conference titles. Over 65% of the student body participates in at least one sport.

• In 2006, the JCA Angels blazed an impressive trail: the girls’ volleyball team finished third in state; the softball team brought home a regional title and advanced to the sectional final for the first time in school history. The Angels’ tennis team scored a sectional championship and qualified a player for state competition. • Over 40 athletes were named ESCC All-Conference for the 2006-2007 school year. • JCA Hilltopper Volleyball placed third in their conference and presented JCA with a Regional Championship. This is the first boys’ volleyball regional title in the history of the school. The boys’ tennis team netted first place finishes in several area tournaments as well as a third place finish in sectional competition.
Defining Leaders Joliet Catholic Academy students participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. We encourage all students to become involved in at least one extra-curricular activity; in fact, most students participate in several. Students meet new people, but also develop leadership, team work and organizational skills. Dress for Success At JCA...
Dress Code
Students are expected to dress in a manner that reflects self-respect at all times. Neatness, cleanliness and good grooming constitute the basic goals and norms of the JCA dress code. Though it is true that dress and grooming are a means of expressing individuality and self-respect, it must be realized that students are also responsible to the school community for their appearance. JCA expects that parents will offer the first and best counsel to their sons and/or daughters in this matter.
All students are to wear solid khaki/tan pants or shorts, plain or pleated, “Docker” style or corduroy, and a solid white JCA logo polo shirt, short or long-sleeved. These shirts can only be purchased through the JCA Spirit Shop. Seniors have the privilege of wearing any solid color short or long-sleeved polo shirt. During cool weather months, pullover or cardigan sweaters are permitted.

Tuition & Fees At JCA, we strive to provide a quality Catholic education for your tuition dollars. Tuition and fees cover only a portion to educate a student at Joliet Catholic Academy. Tuition for the 2007-2008 school year is $7,650. The overall cost to educate a student is $9,673 and the difference is made up by mandatory fundraising. Listed below are student fees:

JCA’s tuition is extremely competitive, attempting to be one of the most affordable for area private schools. The investment families make in their son or daughter is one that will not go unrewarded. Each year students reap the rewards of the education provided, and the experience is an invaluable one.
Bishop’s Tuition Grants JCA families may apply for aid directly from the Joliet Diocese. The Diocese will allocate all financial monies. The application deadline is March 1 of the previous school year. The Diocese awards between $500 - $750 per student. JCA Work Study Program JCA will provide up to 50% of the Bishop’s Tuition Grant in the form of work-study at the school. JCA Endowed Scholarships These scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate financial need and are in good academic standing.

JCA Educational Grants These grants are awarded to students who demonstrate financial need and are in good academic standing. Brother/Sister Discount $800 discount for the second student; $1,600 for the third student; 100% discount for the fourth and fifth students currently in attendance for the 2007-2008 school year. Franciscan/Carmelite Top Scorer Scholarship $1,000 awarded to the top scorer(s) of the December Placement Exam. No application necessary. Franciscan/Carmelite General Scholarship Fifty scholarships of $500 each awarded to students who do well academically, are involved in extra-curricular activities and who project a positive image of their grade school. Applications are due December 8, 2007.

Bus Service JCA’s goal is to accommodate all students that need transportation. Bus routes are re-evaluated annually, and we specifically attempt to provide busing for areas with at least five students who show interest. For the 2007-2008 school year, each student pays $735 for an entire year of bus transportation to and from Joliet Catholic Academy. It is important to note that this amount is only 30% of the total cost of busing per student. JCA subsidizes the remaining 70% of the transportation cost per student. JCA families who pay for transportation may complete a state reimbursement form, which will be available in JCA’s Main Office in the spring. Families may be eligible for partial reimbursement from the state for transportation expenses. Students may express interest in transportation services in March at Freshmen Registration. A transportation form is sent out to all families in June with the tuition statement. In early August, the bus company will then contact those families who have completed and submitted our transportation request form.
Other Transportation Options JCA is also accessible through the Joliet Mass Transit District (PACE) and family carpooling, coordinated through the Admissions and Financial Aid Office.
Admissions Choosing a high school is an important decision for students and their families. There are a variety of questions about visiting the school, the placement exam, and the application process. Moreover, a high school needs to feel right – a place where a student not only finds a challenging education, but a support system to guide them through their educational career. Grade school students, come and experience JCA for yourself and see why we are a family! • Visit JCA at Step-Up Day on November 2, 2007 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All 8th graders are welcome to spend the morning at JCA meeting students, faculty, club moderators, and coaches. JCA Franciscan/Carmelite Scholarship What is a Franciscan/Carmelite Scholarship?
Joliet Catholic Academy is committed to educating young men and women who will be prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. It is out of this determination that scholarships are made available to eighth graders who are contemplating attending JCA. This year, Joliet Catholic Academy will offer two different kinds of Franciscan/Carmelite Scholarships: Top Scorer Scholarships and General Scholarships. Franciscan/Carmelite Top Scorer Scholarships
These scholarships of $1,000 towards the Freshman year tuition are awarded to the top scorers on the December 8th, 2007 Placement Test. Students must also be in the top 20% of their 8th grade class. Only students taking the December 8th, 2007 Placement Test will qualify for this scholarship. No application is needed if you wish to apply only for the Top Scorer Scholarship. If you wish to apply for the General Scholarship, you do need to complete this application and follow the directions below. Franciscan/Carmelite General Scholarships
These scholarships of $500 towards the Freshman year tuition are awarded to 50 individuals who took the December 8th, 2007 Placement Test, did not qualify for the Top Scorer Scholarship and who: • demonstrate sound moral values in daily life, • perform academically to the best of their ability, • actively participate in extra-curricular activities, • offer their time and talent to the religious and secular communities, and • project a positive image of their school. How do I apply for a Franciscan/Carmelite General Scholarship? (No application is needed for the Top Scorer Scholarship)
Step 1: Complete the application form below. Step 2: Ask your 8th grade teacher, advisor, or principal if he/she would be willing to write a letter of recommendation supporting you as a candidate for this scholarship. Indicate the name of this person on your application form. (JCA will mail a recommendation form to the person you name on your application.) Step 3: Obtain a copy of your most recent report card. If you do not have one available, your school’s office will be able to make you a copy. Step 4: Mail in your application. Make sure you include the name of your recommender and your report card. This information should be received by JCA no later than Saturday, December 8, 2007. You may drop off the application at the Placement Test on the 8th or mail to JCA, Attn: Ms. Callans, 1200 N. What happens after I turn in my Franciscan/Carmelite General Scholarship application?
(1) You will take the Joliet Catholic Academy Placement Test on Saturday, December 8, 2007. (2) JCA will send a request for a recommendation to the person you indicated on your application. (3) You will be mailed your Placement Test scores and will be notified if, based on these scores, you have been awarded a $1000 Franciscan/Carmelite Top Scorer Scholarship. If you are awarded a Top Scorer Scholarship, you are finished with the scholarship application process! (4) If you did not qualify for a Franciscan/Carmelite Top Scorer Scholarship, you will be contacted by mail requesting that you call JCA to set up an appointment to come to JCA to meet with the Scholarship Committee to complete the Franciscan/Carmelite General Scholarship application process. (5) You will come to JCA for your appointment. While at JCA, you will have a short, 5 minute interview with the Scholarship Committee and will also write a short, one page essay. (6) After all applicants have been interviewed and all materials have been reviewed and evaluated, you will be notified of the outcome of your application for the Franciscan/Carmelite General Scholarship.
How does JCA determine who receives the Franciscan/Carmelite General Scholarships?
Recipients will be chosen based on the completed applications, recommendations, interviews, essays, academics, and leadership qualities, plus the completion of JCA’s Placement Test on December 8, 2007. Awards may vary depending on the Scholarship Committee’s recommendations to the President and Principal of JCA.
