ABOUT DEKOTORA

DEKO-TORA DECORATED TRUCK Dekotora is an abbreviation of decorated trucks, and they are basically moving pieces of art, full of chromed elements and as much neon light as can be, especially after the Gundam Era, where the challenge was to come as close as possible to the image of some sort off a transformer. Decotora is an extension of the personal identity. Looking at the truck, you can see where the owner is coming from and which sorts off goods he delivers.

THE BEGINNING In the 1970s, the fishing trucks from north east Japan began painting and decorating their rigs shortly after the release of a series of 10 movies called "Torakku Yaro" (Trucker Rascals) about a Decotora owner who drove his decorated truck all around the country. The movie was a hit and started a fad. But it wasn’t until a decade or so ago until things started to get really serious with the chrome and that whole mobile casino look. In the beginning there weren`t many shops selling Dekotora parts, therefore Dekotora-Fans started to go to Dumpyards and to buy metal Trash, which they could use and process to proper Tuning Parts.

THE REASON BEHIND DEKOTORA Some reasons in the beginning, to do Dekotora were, because of their job. The truckers usually don‘t see their families for quite a while, so they started to decorate their trucks as if they were their second homes. The trucks even carry around their names, usually from the wife or the daughter. Another reason is because often they hated their job, so they figured this would be a nice way to make their job likeable. But in these days it is more about an expensive hobby. They dont miss their families for such a long time anymore. That is primarily visible in the trucks themselves. You can only sleep in the back of the truck, if you really need to.

THE DEKOTORA COMMUNITY About 200.000 People are involved in Dekotora. The Utamaro Kai Club is probably the most dominant Community for Dekotora Truckers. It includes about 12.000 Members. The name derives from Utamaro Kitagawa, an artist from the18th century, who made folkloristic illustrative drawings on wood. The Group was founded by a guy named Miyazaki in the 1970s, to bring these trucks together for moviesets. There are three big meetings per year: - NewYears meetup - Springtime - Summer

THE TEAM SPIRIT Many of the truck drivers have empathy with disaster areas, so they prefer delivering groceries and other goods to these areas as a support. And therefore they even have annual events, to raise money for these disaster areas. But this feeling of a community and helping each other lays mainly in the culture. The Decotora subculture even encourages some healthy competition. Truckers try to out-bling each other, adding as many bells and whistles onto their rigs as possible. The trick however is to keep the rig street legal and operational. Communities organise roadside meet-ups where truckers and enthusiasts can gather, admire, show-off, borrow ideas or just enjoy the show.

THE INTERIOR

FRENCH GLAM Owners also decorate the inside of the cabs. Interior decorations include just about anything the driver can imagine. They may have a Swarovski chandelier. Sometimes they are also outfitted with curtains, dash and the owners have hand crafted fancy door panels and seat covers.

PADDED TEXTURES Padded textures mainly to be seen in the interiors of a decotora truck. The usage of "quilted" materials goes back to the Japanese fascination for French couture as an icon for good taste. High Fashion gives comfort, it is about having status. Next to that, most of the high fashion brands are from paris or other parts of Europe, which makes it seem exclusive and therefore the right thing to buy, to show, that you‘ve got taste. In this case the padded look clearly shows a link to one big icon in fashion: The Classic Flap Bag by Chanel. Next to that it seems, that they are fascinated by this glamour look.

CHANDELIERS In practically every decotora hangs at least one chandelier. They are located first of all in the front (in between the seats), and maybe some more in the back of the truck. The image, the owner is striving for, seems to be a French ballroom setting. It should remain historical, to maintain this louis XIV athmosphere.

CRYSTALS Showing off these big decorated rigs can result in a need to strive for a rich and precious look. Crystals and Diamond imagery serves to complete what the chandeliers do. The diamonds and crystals are a symbol for purity and wealth.

BAROQUE PATTERNS Baroque patterns are applied in the interior as wallcovering, upholstery and covers for steering wheels. The patterns make the link to a French ballroom very dominant.

CURTAINS & FRINGES Love to the detail is clearly visible in the finishing touch of a curtain dressing the interior of a decotora truck. The importance is here very much the idea of glamorous curtain tassels. Unfortunately the glamourous touch dissolves quickly in the plastic colours which shifts it clearly into rather corny decoration. Especially since the curtains follow the patterning of the baroque wallcoverings.

FLOWERS In many different ways you always discover flower elements. Flower imagery is used in the mural paintings (sakura blossom, kabuki) on the side of the truck, cast inside gear knobs, as stickers or in form of a floral baroque patterning.

THE EXTERIOR

GUNDAM Dekotora truckers take the inspiration for the monumental exterior look from Gundam Art. Gundam series show all kinds of transforming robots. Examples of these series are: Candidate for Goddess & Gundam Wing Most have multiple horns including bellowing air horns as well as horns that can play any number of tunes selected by the driver. Other common features include chromed ladders to reach the top of the cab, front bumper extensions, top racks, and special music to play when reversing. One dump truck played Japan‘s national anthem as it backed up.

NEON LIGHTS The decoration for these trucks doesn‘t stop at the paint job though. Trucks are outfitted with many other trappings starting with a variety of flashing lights; some with multi-colored neon lights. The lamps follow the Form. They emphasize the edges of the trucks In the usage of colour in the lighting, you can see the character behind it. Some like to get attention by means of a colour chaos. Others like to express an individual style by a specifically chosen colour mood.

CHROME A Dekotora truck relies on its 3D qualities. The sharp edges and its diversity in form. Therefore it also seems very logical, that the basic material for the exterior is chrome. First of all to support the Form, but also because of the importance, that the truck should be as visible and eyecatching as possible.

DEKOTORA CONSTRUCTION PARTS On the exterior of a Dekotora truck, the decoration is mainly an extension of the car body. Key parts are the Front Bumper, The Top Racks, the Mirror Construction and the Horns. All serve to expand the truck to make it appear larger, more monumental MORE DANGEROUS The form language of dekotora parts mainly varies in angles of 45, 90 and 135 degrees.

FRONT BUMPER Front bumpers can be put in two groups: the rather simple and boxy version, and the overexposed futuristic gundam look

MIRRORS One big feature is the Mirror construction. A trapezium shaped frame carrying the Mirrors. Most of the time these frames are ornamented with diamond patterning.

TOP RACKS Towers on top of the roof serve as a vertical extension of the truck. The trapezium shapes exagerate the effect of the perspective. Also remarkable of these towers is the common tube construction. The spotlights catch the attention and they are very characteristic for the truck.

HORNS Another extension of the Dekotora truck are these horns, Pillars, which a built upon the Front Bumpers. The inspiration for these could derive from Bulls, a matter of making the truck seem more dangerous. They only function as a case for lights.

MURAL PAINTINGS

The major decoration for Decotora consists of art scenes, many depicting Japanese heroic tales, on the side panels, the rear cargo doors, and the passenger cab doors. Most of the owners have the art work professionally done and painting a large cargo truck‘s side panels and cargo doors can take a month or more of six to seven hour work days for the artist. Some of the paintings take around a month, seven hours a day to finish it. But then they also cost up to 7000$

TIGERS & DRAGONS On the side of a Dekotora, tigers and dragons are often pictured. The tiger is a symbol of power and invincibility and the dragon symbolizes a god, who is responsable for the rainfall. But both together symbolize opposing forces, similar to the Chinese Yin and Yang.

FISH & SEASCAPES The fish is a commonly used image for the painting on the side of a Dekotora. The fish, mostly captured jumping or flying, is surrounded by big stormy waves. The Japanese link imagery often to folkloristic tales or symbolics. The carp in Japanese culture represents faithfulness in marriage and general good fortune. The Water is generally seen to be a symbol for a good fortune and health.

NIHONGA This kind of artwork shows Samurais and Geishas in a very traditional and folkloristic way. The Geishas usually pictured in a traditional Kimono with the beautiful headdresses. The samurais usually dangerous and in action. It seems they are always ready to attack you. Historical scenes and figures (scenes from the Edo and Meiji periods)

ICONIC FORMS

STARS In a lot of cases you see stars decorating the outside of a truck. These are visible in the lights, the front bumpers and roofs. But something, which is clearly noticable is, that the stars, used in this way, really work as some sort of a hollywood setting (as in the walk of fame).

HEXAGONS & OCTAGONS A very common shape in sci-fi cartoons & movies is the hexagon. This transformer aesthetic only works with hard-edged shapes. Working with such edgy polygons works well in the tuning parts, for example the tubes on the roofs or the exhaust. In other examples you can see these shapes also obviously in the lighting of the truck.

RHOMBUS & DIAMONDS Rhomboids and diamonds decorate almost every decotora truck. They are used for andoms placed on the front or the side of the cap. They appear in the padded textures and so on gear knobs. But the lighting shows more, than anywhere else a play with a diamond patterning. But the diamond shape itself in the patterning very much reminds of gaming cards, which enhances the idea, that a decotora truck looks like a mobile casino deriving from Las Vegas.

TYPEFACES The Japanese Characters commonly dress the truck along the artworks on the side and on the front on some decoration plates. It seems as if the truck owners prefer a rather handwritten look for the typeface. It fulfills the message of the heroic and rather folkloristic tales pictured in the mural paintings. Dekotoras often use Edomoji letter styles, which is a font developed for advertising in the Edo-Period. The colours of the typeface is often red or black and it appears to be very bold so it catches the eye easily.

FURTHER STEPS

DEVELOPMENTS Decotora drivers used to be men in between 50 and 60 years. They liked to listen to Enka, a typically Japanese Folk music genre, and were inspired by this music genre. In Japan it is produced and only there people know it. It includes a lot of sentimental ballads and traditional Japanese folklore melodies. Nowadays there is a shift towards younger people, around an age of 20-30. Inspired is this generation from Itasha, which is a way of decorating car bodies. Very popular icons in Itasha are anime and manga figures, which should preferably look „kawaii“(cute). New ideals came up with the Itacha culture which has found new representations for their national culture: The manga characters. Which makes the idea of comic style increasingly important.

The idea of decorating was more about the amounts of lights and who has the most of them. But now after getting so often in trouble with laws and the police, the focus seems to go to the very beginning, when decoration was more dominant in the paintings along the truck.

SIMILARITIES IN OTHER COUNTRIES Other countries have picked up some form of the fad. Columbia and Equador have Chiva Busses, which are artisan passenger carriers. Haiti has Tap Taps, Dekotora-style bus/taxis. Jeepneys are Filipino taxis made from US military jeeps left over from World War II, and are the most common type of public transportation in Manila. Pakistan has the king of them all: the Jingle Truck. Jingle Trucks are some of the most ornate self-propelled devices on the planet. Jingle trucks actually predate Dekotora, but the two practices came up unrelated.

VIDEO GAMES The style of Dekotora has had a great impact on video gaming. A lot of people say, Dekotora got out of fashion long time ago, but already the appearance of Dekotora on the Nintendo Wii shows the relevance of the topic.
