Educational Mobile Device design for student
Persona
In the 21st century, mobile technology is no longer something new. Because of the popularization of the mobile products like the cell phones, computers, cameras, and music player, many student have mobile device as their possession. May is a college student. she interacts with different mobile derives daily. Electronic mobile devices are becoming part of her life. She will be panic if she loose her cell phone.
Empathic research Empathic research is a study about how the college students use their mobile device in campus. This research is focusing on the gesture of how students holding or interacting with their mobile devices. The goal of this research is to understand our current user’s habit and behaviour on using their mobile devices.
Problem
Nowadays, student are too relying on the Internet. Most of the time, they would rather go online for checking information rather than searching a reference book from the library, which is a traditional way of student learn through searching. From the searching experience, student can learn more than they expected. Most of the Course’s reference books are not always available to all student due to the limited quantity of books in the library. Books are heavy and student don’t like to carry them around. Books from the library are not allow to put notes on it. Takes longer time to find information. Returning books physically is a waste of time.
Opportunities Design a mobile devices that can encourage student to take advantage of School’s library Changing the perspective of how people think of library is a boring place. Bring searching experience to another level by utilizing technology that is available.

What is light? “Light is electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength that is visible to the human eye in a range from about 380 or 400 nanometers to about 760 or 780 nm.” “Light is energy” “We cannot see anything without light.” “In physics, the term light sometimes refers to electromagnetic radiation of any wavelength, whether visible or not.” “Light have many different range.” “Light has temperature and heat.” “The speed of light in a vacuum is presently defined to be exactly 299,792,458 m/s (approximately 186,282 miles per second) Light is fast”

Problem statement The well development of light technology make artificial lighting is available everywhere. Because of that, the usage of energy is dramatically increased due to the fact that people use light for everything and everywhere, which create a problem of abusing the use of energy. I see a design opportunity for educating the people to save energy.
Goal Remind user to turn off the light when the user leave the room. Help user to build up the habit of energy saving. Product needs to be aesthetically blend into the area.

O-switch The final design is a silicon mask light switcher. This device is designed for educating user to build up a habit of being aware of energy use by remind them to turn off the light when the user leave the room. For the user convenient, a night light feature is attached into the design which allow user to have a little light support after the room light is off. Motion sensor in the switcher play the role of detecting user’s activity which used to active the Red signal light and a timer for the night light.
Night Light mode
Signal mode
How it works? When user walk until 2.5 ft. way from light switch. Motion sensor in the light switch will activate the red signal light to draw user attention to turn off the light for saving energy. Red signal light will only blink five times which prevent annoying user if the user is not leaving the room.
Once user turn off the light the red signal will be gone. User also have a option of holding down the light switch for 2 sec. It will activate the night light in the light switch, so that user still get enough illumination for activity.

How would I design a product for my user who only knows how to cry?
I believe the key is “observation.”
Persona New born Babies come to the world with no Knowledge, no friends, no ipod, no video games, no money, and no clothes. The closest to them probably are their parents. However, new born babies are unable to speak language yet. How could they communicate with their needs? They cry, cry, and cry to capture the adults’ attention. But parents still need to guess what they want when they are crying.

The travel system stroller is designed allow the car seat attach on the stroller. They are about medium wheel through all type of stroller. It usually fit a range size of babies.
Double /Triple stroller is design for the family who have multiple babies. It’s convenient to carry all their babies for out door activity.
It’s design for those active parents who like to bring their babies together enjoy the jog experience. Jogging Strollers are usually 3 big wheels design which allows them to push through unpaved road.

Grandpa Chen spends most of his time at home and reads the news paper, watches the news, and cooks. He spends a lot of his time with his family members who also help him get things done.
Research In 2029 all Baby boomers, those born between 1946-1964, will be over 65. As we age the need for assistance mobility rises from 6% to 20%, and rises to 60% for those over 80. The baby boomer generation has a high level of wealth and a 14% un-insuranced rate, much lower than other age groups. Many walking assistance devices are prescribed by physicians and are covered by insurance plans.

Problems After research and interview, I realize the current walking canes are absolutely not satisfying the baby boomer. The shape, the function, and the personal tastes on the walking cane have a lot room for improvement. Canes in the market are boring and making the users look older when being occupied. From the feed back of my interviewee, majority of them feel wrist’s pain cause by using cane. In order to test out what is causing the pain of using cane, I walked with a cane for 2 weeks. The result from my experiment shows that the pain is coming from the shock that everytime users place the cane to the ground as a sport for walking forward. Imagine users have to do the same motion hundred to thousand times a day. This could be a critical issues on their wrist.

Analysis Eco. Furniture Foundation by Benjamin Hubert. Advertised as: Having wood from sourced forest waste pine Zero carbon emission manufacturing Timeless appeal Materials and manufacturing: Pine wood Sheet steel Leather Paint Powder coat
Critique: Though the primary material may come from a recycled and renewable source, this is only possible because it is low to mid-volume production. The zero carbon emissions for manufacturing likely comes from the fact that these are primarily hand-made. The main problem in terms of a stainability standpoint is the end of life for this product. All of the materials are either painted or powder coated, so re-use and recycling are unlikely.
Stakeholders’ point of view: Expensive to manufacture Low volume Not easy to re-use or recycle Not re-configurable
606 Universal Shelving System by Dieter Rams Advertised as: Infinitely configurable Materials and manufacturing: Aluminum Steel Powder coat
Critique: Although not advertised as “sustainable”, one could argue that it is. Due to its ability to be re-configured, the shelving system likely has a longer life span. With Exception of the powder coated steel shelves, the aluminum structure is fairly easy to recycle in comparison to wood. Stakeholders’ point of view: Configurable to consumer’s desires Not advertised as sustainable Long life span

Shoesmate Design a modern shoes storage that functions as a deodorizer
Persona In today’s world, people tend to neglect shoe care in the name of laziness or disgust. Shoes are associated with descriptive modifiers such as dirty, germ-infested, and smelly mainly due to sweat and its ground contact. As a result, shoes are carelessly thrown aside unorganized and exposed. This opens an opportunity to improve the management, cleanliness, and provide a better environment for the user.
Problem After I decided to start this project, I visit most of my friend’s house to find out if the shoes odor is the common problem for most of the people. As a result, everyone of them was having the same problem. However, they tends to ignore or cover it but never solve the problem.
Goal Understanding the problem by research, I find out the main problem of creating shoes odor and foot disease are the bacteria in the shoes. Therefore, my goal for this project will be focusing on killing the bacteria in the user’s shoes and at the same time providing a nice spaces for organizing user’s shoes which also preventing the dirt/dust getting into user’s home.
