BUTLER, Chairman — Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation became a pioneer in the gaming industry with the opening of our bingo hall in 1986. This was not only the foundation for our bright future; it was also a rite of passage. The Mashantucket Pequots had endured centuries of hardship to persevere and thrive. Foxwoods® Resort Casino opened in 1992 as a result of the ambitious vision and unwavering commitment of Mashantucket Pequot Tribal members. It was, and continues to be, a true testament to the strength of the Pequot spirit. Today, Foxwoods is recognized as North America’s largest resort casino; it boasts six casinos with more than 350 table games and 6,300 slot machines, four hotels, 38 dining experiences, 25 retails shops, the largest casino-based poker room, one of the largest bingo halls in the world, two lavish spas, two award-winning golf courses, a comedy club, luxury bowling lanes and more. MASHANTUCKET PEQUOT HISTORICAL TIMELINE Early 1600s: The Pequots had approximately 8,000 members and inhabited 250 square miles in Western CT. 1636 – 1638: The Pequot War had a devastating impact on the Tribe; decimating the number of members and forcing survivors into slavery or under the control of neighboring tribes. 1650s – 1660s: The Western Pequots receive reservation land at Morgan’s Point in Noank in 1651, only to have portions of taken away in exchange for a rocky, swampy heavilywooded inland parcel of land that no one wanted, known as “Mashantucket”; an Algonquin word for “much wooded land”. 1713 – 1762: The tribe endured a rapid series of land dispossessions from Noank & Mashantucket. 1793: A formal reservation boundary was formed delineating the remaining 989 acre reservation to 213 acres. 1856: The State of Connecticut, in violation of the 1790 Federal Trade and Intercourse Act, sold at public auction over 800 acres of Mashantucket land.

1960s: Mashantucket Pequot tribal members began returning to the Mashantucket reservation joining those living there in an effort to revive the Pequot community. 1976: With the assistance of the Native American Right Fund and the Indian Rights Association, the tribe filed suit against neighboring landowners to recover land that had been sold by the State of Connecticut in 1856. 1983: The Pequots reached a settlement with the landowners, who agreed that the 1856 sale was illegal. The Connecticut Legislature unanimously passed legislation to petition the federal government to grant tribal recognition to the Mashantucket Pequots. The Mashantucket Pequot Indian Land Claims Settlement Act was enacted by the U.S. Congress on October 18, 1983 and signed by President Reagan; granting the Tribe federal recognition, enabling the repurchase and placement in trust all land covered in the Settlement Act. Today, the Mashantucket Western Pequot Reservation encompasses over 1600 acres.

MASHANTUCKET PEQUOT HISTORICAL TIMELINE 1986: The Tribe opened a 2,100-seat High-Stakes Bingo Hall. 1987: The U.S. Supreme Court, in the famous Cabazon case, ruled that Tribes could conduct gaming on Pre-casino Bingo Hall tribal lands as long as gaming was allowed in the state the tribe resided.
2000: In January, total contributions to the State of Connecticut from slot revenues reach $1 Billion. 2006: A strategic alliance with MGM Mirage gives the Mashantucket Pequots new development project an official name: MGM Grand at Foxwoods.
1992: The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation opened the original Foxwoods High Stakes Bingo & Casino. The facility offered 46,000 square-feet of gaming space with 170 table games. 1993: The Tribe negotiated with the State of Connecticut allowing for the operation of slot machines. The Tribe agreed to pay the state 25% of it slot revenues. Today the cumulative contribution to the state has exceeded $3.29 billion. With $240-million expansion of Foxwoods to 1.3 million square feet, the property is re-introduced as Foxwoods Resort Casino, it now includes two hotels, six casinos, a theater complex, retail shops, several quick service restaurants, a beauty salon, health spa, and additional gaming space.
Ground-breaking for MGM Grand at Foxwoods
2008: On May 17, MGM Grand at Foxwoods opened adding a new, 826-room hotel tower, a 4,000-seat theater, 115,000 square feet of meetings and convention space, four new restaurants, upscale retail venues, exciting new nightclubs, a luxurious new 26,000-square-foot spa and additional parking. 2010: The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s $32 million dollar state-of-the-art cogeneration power facility at Foxwoods became fully online and operational; providing cleaner air emissions along with an added reduction of fifteen megawatts of power from CL&P’s distribution system grids, translating into significant savings for businesses and residents throughout New London County. May 2010: Total contributions to the State of Connecticut from slot revenue reaches $3 Billion. Foxwoods Resort Casino: Total Property 6.7 million sq. ft. Foxwoods proudly employs 8,830 full-time, part-time, and casual team members.
Grand Pequot Tower Construction
1994: A $65 million dollar expansion added another 300,000 square feet. High-Stakes Bingo received a new location, the Fox Theater was expanded to 4,000 seats and the overall gaming floor expanded to 190,000 square feet. 1998: Additional conference facilities opened to create a premier location for trade shows, conferences, and major events. The Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center opened to the public on August 11.

The tribal symbol is both a reflection of Mashantucket Pequot past and a symbol of hope for the future. Framed against the sky, the lone tree on a knoll represents Mashantucket, the “much wooded land” where the Pequots hunted and kept alive their identity as an independent people. Displayed on the knoll is the signature of Robin Cassasinnamon, the Pequots first leader, following the 1637 massacre at Mystic Fort. The fox stands as a reminder that the Pequots are known as “The Fox People.”
