President's welcome

W

elcome to the 18th annual Kaslo Jazz Etc. Festival. This year, we are extremely pleased to present a program that should be our best yet. We have also implemented many changes and improvements which will make your festival experience even more enjoyable. The “beast”, as we affectionately call the festival, has only one constant — change. Time, space, and place dictate that we continue tweaking, tuning, and adjusting this dynamic event. We are always striving to make this the perfect festival. Being recognized as one of the top 10 in North America, according to USA TODAY is great, but ... We are very proud of this years program. As a listener, you will be privy to many different musical genres. Friday night will allow you to iron out those long distance travel kinks at our “Kootenanny”. BARK and Ridley are certain to loosen and limber you up. Saturday and Sunday will captivate you with their continental feel. Be prepared to travel many places, from quaint cafes in the French Riviera, to the aqua blue Caribbean and Cuban islands, to the steamy streets of New Orleans, to the Woodstock flashbacks of your imagination. Our various workshops will allow for many memorable musical moments.

This year, after hours of careful deliberation, we have altered many areas of our actual site. The proximity of venders and amenities has been improved. The stage has been relocated, providing you with better viewing and sound, in a more intimate setting, which will allow for more overall space and comfort. Kaslo Jazz Etc. Festival is an intricate entity which could not operate without our reciprocal community involvement and participation. Over 300 people volunteer their time and we contribute in kind or directly to many groups and organizations. There is an incredible community spirit involved in making this event as successful as it is. The support, whether volunteers, sponsors from local and regional businesses, provincial and federal funding, are all greatly appreciated by us. Again, thank you and welcome to Kaslo Jazz Etc. Fest 2009. Bub Patience, President KJES

ichie Havens got his start at the early age of 9 organizing doo-wop groups in his local Brooklyn neighborhood. His fascination with music continued to grow and at the age of 20 Havens escaped to the artistic freedom that was the Greenwich Village. In his words, “I saw the Village as a place to escape to in order to express yourself. I had first gone there during the beatnik days of the 1950s to perform poetry, then I drew portraits for 2 years and stayed up all night listening to folk music in the clubs. It took a while before I thought of picking up a guitar.”

After gaining a following outside of the “village” Havens was asked to be the opener for Woodstock. His eccentric performance held the crowd entranced for almost three hours before he ran out of songs and decided to improvise the song “Freedom” which was roughly based off of “Motherless Child”. Freedom became the voice for this generation and was a highlight of the festival. Now after more than twentyfive album releases Havens is still going strong, releasing “Nobody Left to Crown” in 2008 and keeping up a rigorous touring schedule that many younger artists wouldn’t be able to handle.

hroughout his 20 year career as a solo artist, multi Grammy nominated saxophonist Bill Evans has explored a variety of musical settings that go well beyond the confines of traditional jazz, including hiphop, fusion, reggae, Brazilian and slamming funk. been an Americana fan ever since my Miles days. I liked the sound of mandolin, banjo, dobro and fiddle and I thought that music had a very cool rhythmic approach. So it had been in the back of my mind for years to do a project like this.

The ground-breaking Soulgrass recording was nominated for a Grammy in 2005. Because of his respect and adulation among fellow artists in the music world, Bill was able to call upon the stellar musicians who appeared on the recording. Evans says that the idea of exploring an adventurous and unlikely hybrid of bluegrass and jazz was actually something he had in mind for years. I’ve

arbara Dennerlein burst onto the Munich jazz scene at the age of 15, a child prodigy she had been playing since the age of 11. Her weapon of choice was the B3 Hammond organ. On it she has been able to create an innovative style with the use of the pedal bass. The Hammond organ was long considered dead in the jazz scene, but Barbara’s eccentric playing revived like a zombie rising from the grave. Now considered one of Germany’s prime jazz exports she has a cornucopia of awards for her many albums. While her sound is unmistakably her own, she takes huge influence from Jimmy Smith and Larry Young and shares their innovative spirit. Now she is excited to bring her explosive style to the Kaslo Jazz Etc. Festival.

hile attending the National School of Arts in Havana for classical guitar, Elmer Ferrer watched Crossroads, a movie that changed his life. From that point forward playing jazz and blues on electric guitar was all he wanted to do. After 8 years of formal classical guitar training Ferrer graduated and was asked to join the School as faculty for the new “Department of Electric Guitar”. Now an accomplished musician Elmer started his career joining numerous groups and guesting on many CDs before finally starting the Elmer Ferrer Band in 2004. The Cuban Guitar Sniper, as he is sometimes called, collected the very talented Cuban musicians Rodney Barreto on Drums and Roberto Riveron on Bass. To round-off this super star line-up is Canadian Guitarist and vocalist Andres Drerup. In 2005 the group recorded Fango Dance and started a long tour. What is most celebrated about the band is its unbelievable stage presence. Playing originals and high energy, reinterpretations of some of the alltime world famous rock, blues and jazz songs Elmer’s unique guitar sound is like a mash-up of Jeff Beck, Pat Methany, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Carlos Santana all tied together with the soul of Hendrix.

rad Turner’s multi-faceted m u s i c a l spectrum gives him an edge few others have. Currently he is one of the most wanted players in the business, playing trumpet, drums, piano and composing. Without setting foot in a room he could topple his competition with only his resume, playing with such artists as Joe Lovano, Michael Moore, Jimmy Greene, Ingrid Jensen, Seamus Blake, and Ernie Watts. He and his quartet have opened shows for such artists as: Roy Haynes, Wayne Shorter, Clark Terry and Diana Krall. As for his music, it’s jazz at its finest.

Aaron Nazrul and the Boom Booms

group of four that has been around for just shy of a decade that blend Jazz, Brazilian sambas and French chansons with musical fervor. They started off as a bar hopping quadra, hitting all the hot spots in the lower mainland. Now, with children a plenty, a feature in a documentary, and a re-furbished sound, they’re back on the track of festival touring. The bands three vixens have an extensive history in touring, shredding and even musical theatre. The duo of swapping drummers, Bernie Arai and Nino diPasquale, take turns pumping out flaring jazz rhythms and mechanical fills. They’re back, and they’ve got new tricks; Mimosa is ten times as slick – get ready to jive!

Turner’s 6th and latest album ‘Small Wonder’ was nominated for Traditional Jazz Album of the year. In the past his work has been nominated many times and in 1997 and 1998 he and the group Metalwood won best Contemporary Jazz Album. In 2008, Turner acquired National Jazz Awards for Trumpeter of the Year and Producer of the year.

blazing mix of upbeat Reggae, Folk and Funk; the Boom Booms birth came from the successful release of front man Aaron Nazrul’s solo album “Butterfly Man”. Riding on its hot release this motley crew of musicians played a number of Vancouver and Interior shows before making the hit music video “When the Night” which quickly reached number 6 on the MuchMore Music chart. Now it was time for a real tour so the band purchased a 1973 propane-fueled RV, loaded up their equipment and headed south with no planned gigs, just finding shows as they went. Their diverse stage presence led them all the way down to Panama and back. Getting rave reviews where ever they went Aaron Nazrul and the Booms found themselves on a national television spot in El Salvador. Returned from their epic journey they are ecstatic to bring this High Energy show back to Kaslo.

traight out of Nelson BC, Playmor Junction is a nineteen piece big band extravaganza. Their adaptation of Big band classics and their three-hour dance numbers have given them a name all around the

his acoustic soul group from Edmonton Alberta dabbles in more than a couple cultures; with styles ranging from Rural Russia to the Jungles of Mexico this quintet minds the gap of music. Singing in Russian, Spanish, French and English, Le Fuzz reaches out to not only young and old, but to everyone, everywhere. Taking the accordion to the next level, Jason Kodie pumps out organically delicious riffs and ludicrously solid backing lines for his band mates. With Latin inspired grooves and delicious folk harmonies, Le Fuzz are on a truly an innovative train of love and sound.

aised in the Louisiana Mississippi delta, Sanders was immersed in Jazz, Blues, and Gospel for the first 25 years of his life. Playing Sax, Piano, and Vocals he was named “Birmingham’s answer to Little Stevie Wonder”. As a child Sanders ran into the likes of Elvis Presley and Dr. Martin Luther King, opening his eyes and giving him the rounded view that he sees with now. With a scholarship he began to master the saxophone, guitar, and piano. With a degree in composition he began his career as a score writer. Movie scores and charts jumped under his belt like fleas as he immersed himself in music. For over 30 years he has gifted us with his sound, playing festivals and sold out concert halls all over the world, his resume is a text on music history and his one of a kind blues style makes us feel good, not pitiful.

ianist Amanda Tosoff grew up in White Rock B.C where she began studying music at an early age. While studying at Capilano College in North Vancouver BC, Tosoff received a degree in Music - Jazz performance in 2005. During that time Tosoff honed her piano skills under the tutelage of Juno award winning pianist Ross Taggart, Chris Sigarson and Lorne Kellett. She also studied with some of Canada’s most prominent jazz educators and performers, including Mike Allen, Ihor Kukurudza, Rejean Marois, Al Wold and many more.

his Seattle based band is as varied as they come, with a bassist, a drummer, and four smokin’ hot horn players. Their roots are deep within the instrumental side of jazz and they mix styles together more furiously than a food processor on ‘high’. With influences of reggae, rock, ska, punk, classical, jazz, soul, folk and more, this group sound like a jungle of driven tonality and rhythm. Their music is an attack on the ears, a beautiful choreography of vocal, brass, and percussion that never relents. Their 2006 release “Do This! was a finalist for best Jazz Record and also won two Earshot Golden Ear Awards. Their new album, titled “Chicken or Beef? was released last year and holds the same enthralling style of tuneage that captivated the public in 2006.

lackie and the Rodeo Kings are a super group of classic Canadian country musicians. Their debut “High and Hurtin” released in 1996 was an impressive first effort for these Country heroes followed by “King’s of Love” released in 1999. With the release of BARK, Colin, Tom and Stephen came to realize that Blackie and the Rodeo Kings was a perfect medium for the songs they wanted to write. The next 8:30pm Friday recording atmosphere was so perfect and creative that BARK managed to pump out 29 great songs. This was too many for one CD, so two consecutive CD’s “Let’s Frolic” and Let’s Frolic Again” were done. Containing stunning songcraft and spectacular soul these boys managed to make two great heartfelt albums.

After realizing professional Skiing might not work out for him Ridley decided to learn guitar 7:30pm Friday and pursue a career in the music biz. In Vancouver the country boy began to spread his word through plenty of open mics and even playing on the beach each night. Persevering, his entrancing stories stood strong and he managed to break into the Canadian music scene. Blending the traditional country of Hank Sr. with the best of new country Ridley Bent creates a sound he calls “Hick-Hop”. His new album “Buckles and Boots” is a modern classic that shows his maturity as a songwriter and his evolving style.
