Follow the road in front of the building and it will wind down to the Shields’ farm. You will see the cars. Come early and enjoy the fellowship. Bring your rod and reel and try your luck at catching one of George’s fish. We do not clean nor cook any catch!!

Danville Kiwanis Club History The family picnic has been a long standing Kiwanis tradition. In the late 30’s or early 40’s the Club bought a piece of property on the Park Springs Road just across the North Carolina Line. For four weeks each summer, Kiwanis would sponsor a summer camp for underprivileged children, two one week sessions for boys and the same for girls. During June, July and August, one of the regular Club meetings would be a “country meeting” held at Park Springs. Canoeing, swimming, fishing were available and there was always a large “roller bat” softball game going on in a nearby field. Members would bring their spouses, children and grandchildren, many arriving in strollers and baby carriages. The “cooks” would leave work early to prepare the meals which normally consisted of fried chicken, hot dogs and hamburgers, corn on the cob, beans, watermelon and plenty of desserts. The kitchen was a small cinderblock building and the combination of the stoves, grills and summer heat made the working conditions terrible. As a pre-teen I was amazed whenever one emerged from the kitchen, always drenched in perspiration but always smiling. It wasn’t until I was much older that I realized that perhaps a little “bourbon and branch” helped ease the conditions and kept a smile on their faces. Park Springs was sold in 1971 at which time the picnics continued at Hughes Home until the orphanage was discontinued. Ballou Park became the home for some years and recently Leah and George have graciously offered to serve as host at their lovely farm. Because of work schedules, family obligations and other conflicts many of you have a difficult time in making meetings. If possible this is a great time to come to a meeting, reacquaint yourself with your fellow Kiwanians, enjoy some good fellowship and know how wonderful an organization you belong to. President’s Message I have had busy month. On May l5, I attended the Scholarship Award program at George Washington High School and presented the Key Club Scholarship to Rebecca Richardson. On May l9, I went to the Honors Program at George Washington High School and presented the honor stoles to the honor graduates from GW and Galileo Magnet High School. In addition to the Key Club Scholarship, the honor stoles, acknowledging the outstanding foreign language students at GW and Galileo, and recognizing outstanding students from the Middle Schools, we also offer two scholarships at Danville Community College and Averett University. In total, we spend about $6,000 or 40% of our community service budget on education. I would also like to thank Dick Inlow for the wonderful presentation he made when recognizing the foreign language awards. His remarks were witty and he had a wonderful message for the students and their parents.

President-Elect’s Message Tom, Dillon and I met with Lisa and Ann (co-owners of the Danville Academy of Dance) and they presented us with a very generous check. All the major bills have been paid and Dillon will be sending bills for ads. If all goes well we should make our goal of $13,000. I want to thank everyone who helped make this year's recital a success. Thanks to those who sold ads, helped move things from the dance studio to GW and back, ushered, worked the ticket booth and served as fire marshals. Many of you worked more than one shift which I really appreciate. This is our biggest project and the success goes a long way to help us provide the funding for the more than 20 projects we support each year. Thank you again!
