Kiwanis History: Perfect Attendance Within the next couple of weeks, Secretary Jay will be handing out perfect attendance tabs for the year. Perfect attendance is very important to many members as was the case with two former members, Dr. Paul Hodge and Maclin “Mac’ Choate. Paul served as the Pastor of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church for many decades, was President of the Club in 1949, and won the Citizenship Award in 1958. Mac was a very successful businessman and was the jokester of the Club and kept the meetings alive with his off the cuff comments. Paul always said he was the best looking Presbyterian minister in North Danville, something no one questioned because he was the only Presbyterian minister in North Danville. On the other hand, Mac ran an ad in every issue of the KiNotes saying that “I am NOT the ugliest man in the Club anymore.” Mac never gave any indication who he might be referring to and upon his death the family searched for clues but none were ever found so to this day it is still a mystery. Mac was a devoted Democrat. In 1976, President-Elect Jimmy Carter invited Mac to attend the inauguration and the other festivities in Washington. Story has it that Mac wrote the President-Elect and told him that he would be unable to attend because he had

a Kiwanis meeting that week. He and Paul were running neck and neck with more than 30 years perfect attendance and he didn’t want Paul to pull ahead. On March 2l, 1991 both Kiwanians were presented with 50 year pins. This year more than 30% of the active membership had perfect attendance. Budge Kent (49) Harry Kolendrianos (45) Bert Osborne (44) and Lee Wayland (4l) are our current leaders. Congratulations to everyone who had perfect attendance for the year but especially to the top four for their remarkable achievement. Keep up the good work! ~DB

Club Corner Congratulations to Carol and Dillon Barnett on the birth of their new grandson, Kearney Carroll Barnett, born September 20, 2013. Tom Blackwell passed away on September 21, 2013. The club extends their sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

Did You Know? All Service Leadership Programs (SLP) can now trick-or-treat for UNICEF. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is a classic. Key Club and UNICEF have worked together on Trick-orTreat for UNICEF for almost 20 years, and the annual Halloween campaign now includes all Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs. Just like last year— when Kiwanis-family clubs collected more than US$500,000—funds raised by clubs will benefit The Eliminate Project.

If you sponsor a program for youth or adults with disabilities, help them collect coins instead of candy this Halloween. Be their partner to maximize efforts and funds raised— order little orange collection boxes, chaperone trick-or-treaters, help organize fundraisers and build excitement about participating. Find more information and ideas at www.TheEliminateProject.org/trickor treat. Let’s work together to reach our goal and continue to make the world a better place for moms and babies.
