Kiwanis History: Danville Science Center Walter Witschey, former Executive Director of the Science Center of Virginia, was visiting his in-laws, Virginia and Walter Vincent (Kiwanian) in the early 1990’s. Virginia mentioned that it would be great if they could open a branch in Danville. Spearheaded by Whitt Clement (Kiwanian) and Jerry Fischer, the Director of Community Development for the city of Danville at that time, wheels began to turn. Funding from VDOT with ICTEA grants and negotiations with Southern Railway for the use of the Amtrak building soon turned the station into the Danville Science Center. The Kiwanis Club played a very important role from the beginning. With the help of a grant from the E. Stuart James Grant Charitable Trust, the Club made a $200,000 lead gift to help with a million dollar capital campaign co-chaired by Eileen Stendig and Virginia Hall. The campaign was successful and at a large formal party where key workers and major donors were recognized, Eileen greeted the gathering with “You look like a million dollars”. The Science Center was officially opened in 1995. Years later, the former Spanky’s Restaurant was obtained and the Science Center moved into the renovated building in 2005 and became known as Science Central.

Shortly thereafter, the Estelle Womack collection which also housed the Walter Grant (Kiwanian) big game collection was moved from DCC into the Amtrak station. Since 1995 many Kiwanians and their spouses have (and still do) volunteered thousands of hours of their time. There have been only two Executive Directors, Ginny Laubinger and Jeff Liverman, and both have been active members of our Club. Since 1995, the Club has also made major gifts toward the renovations to the Community Market and the construction of the Carrington Pavilion. The next time you visit the Science Center, the Community Market or go to a concert at Carrington Pavilion, you can feel a sense of pride of being a Kiwanian and knowing what role Kiwanis has played in the revitalization of the Warehouse District and the Danville economy. See you on the l9th. D.B.
