Shoot for the Stars PERFORMING ARTS
Danville is proud to have many famous native sons and daughters.
Donald O’ Connor Donald O’Connor first appeared on stage as an infant at the Fischer Theatre. At the age of 12, O’Connor got his first break in the movies playing the little brother of Fred MacMurray and Bing Crosby in Sing You Sinners. He is probably most known for his great performance with Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds in Singin’ in the Rain and his lead role in the Francis the Talking Mule movie series.
Gene Hackman Gene Hackman made his movie debut in 1964 as Buck Barrow in Bonnie and Clyde. He has gone on to star in over 80 films, a few of the most notable; Hoosiers, The French Connection, The Poseidon Adventure, and Mississippi Burning. Hackman has been nominated for 5 Academy Awards, winning two.
Dick Van Dyke The actor, comdedian, writer, producer, author, song and dance man has a career spanning 6 decades. Some of his noted works included a lead role in Broadway’s Bye Bye Birdie, as Bert in film’s Mary Poppins, and Rob Petrie in television’s The Dick Van Dyke Show. Dick Van Dyke began his career as a radio DJ on Danville’s WDAN (1490) radio station. His body of work has earned him multiple Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe nomination, a Grammy and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Jerry Van Dyke From the night club circuit to television, song and dance man Jerry Van Dyke’s comedic talent led him to many roles and appearances in a variety of long running television series. Among those were The Judy Garland Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Love American Style, and Fantasy Island. He is best known, however, for his role in the series Coach. His portrayal of the beloved, yet befuddled Luther Van Dam, garnered him four consecutive Emmy nominations. He is also known as a talented 4-string banjo musician. Jerry Van Dyke visits Danville

He played at New York’s posh Cafe Carlyle for over 25 years, and was often featured in cameo movie and television appearances.

He has accumulated almost 9,000 hours in military and NASA aircraft and over 1,000 hours in space, including nearly 50 hours of space walks during his four missions. THE WALLDOGS
THE WALLDOGS
Walldog sign and mural artists trace their trade back to the signpainters of old who painted advertisements on walls in communities all over the country. They worked like dogs in the hot sun and thus came to be known as “wall dogs. Walldog artists traveled to Danville from all over the world to paint our murals. Artists came from as far as New Zealand, with others coming from British Columbia, Hawaii, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Texas, California and many other locations. The walls were painted not only by visiting Walldogs, but also by anyone who wanted to help.

CITY / COUNTY INFORMATION
A bustling river town was the dream of Dan Beckwith when he first came to Vermilion County. Beckwith donated twenty acres of the first eighty and platted the town into lots north and south of Main Street, and east and west of Vermilion. Amidst the chants of auctioneer Harvey Luddington, on a warm morning on April 10, 1827, the town of Danville was born. The new county seat was established, and brave entrepreneurs attend the sale and settlement of the first forty-two lots.

Vermilion County is located in East Central Illinois along the Illinois/ Indiana border. With about 80,000 people, the county is home to some the most beautiful topography in the state. As the county seat and largest community, Danville’s population of over 30,000 belies the fact that there is more happening here than meets the eye.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME Our cost of living is a full 10% less than the national average... But wait... this means “less” only in the areas that matter. It means you will find more of your income available for other things. It means that you will find yourself in a home with more amenities than you ever imagined possible. The possibilities are endless –a home on the lake in the heart of the community, a new home in a quiet subdivision, a beautifully restored older home on a tree-lined street, a country or small community setting, or senior living options for anyone in your family - you will find a comfortable, affordable option in Vermilion County. All of this without a long commute – every location is within minutes of every major employer. www.danvilleareainfo.com
