WHAT ARE BSI CMOS SENSORS? • When most people are purchasing a camera or smartphone that they intend to use for taking quality photographs, there focus is majorly on the megapixels of the camera. But did you know that it is not only the megapixels that determine camera quality or clarity? You may have a 13 MP camera and someone else has an 8 MP camera but the quality of your pictures is low compared to the other person. • One of the things you should look for when choosing a camera is whether it has a BSI CMOS sensor. This sensor is better compared to the conventional CMOS sensor because of the simple fact that its design makes it easier for light to reach the photo diodes on the sensor. This is unlike the regular, front-illuminated CMOS sensor where the light has to travel through metal wiring and circuit elements before hitting the photo diodes or the light-receiving surface.
WHAT ARE BSI CMOS SENSORS? • In a BSI CMOS sensor, the wires are moved behind the photo diodes, something that makes the sensor more light-sensitive. A more sensitive sensor requires less light to get a properly exposed photo, and it also creates less noise. The vice versa is true for a less sensitive sensor. • One thing that you may be asking yourself right now is why BSI CMOS sensors are not in all cameras if they are so great. Well, if what you are thinking about is point-and-shoot cameras and smartphones, the reason why these sensors are not prevalent in them yet is that they are still somewhat expensive to make. However, things are slowly changing and the production of the BSI CMOS sensors is increasing. As for the interchangeable lens cameras and digital SLRs, having BSI CMOS sensors is not necessary as the large sensors they have do not suffer the same amount of loss in sensitivity from the obstructing circuitry. Also, producing large BSI CMOS sensors is currently very expensive today, so the cost would outweigh the benefits.
