WHAT IS A BSI SENSOR?

WHAT IS A BSI SENSOR? • BSI sensor, which in full stands for Backside Illuminated sensor, is certainly something that you will be hearing more about in the future whether or not you are conversant with it right now. This sensor has quite a number of significant advantages in light sensitivity, tech camera flexibility, dynamic range as well as signal-to-noise ratio. What has been preventing the BSI sensors from becoming the commonplace in both professional digital cameras and consumer-grade cameras is their higher manufacturing costs as well as greater manufacturing complexity. However, advancements in technology as well as changes in manufacturing techniques are going to make these sensors the standard for any camera that any manufacturer wants people to take with a lot of seriousness. • So how does a BSI sensor work? For you to understand how this sensor works, you first have to understand how a traditional CMOS sensor is made. A typical sensor is comprised of three layers, namely the photodiode layer, the layer of wiring and the layer of lenses. The photodiode layer is for converting light into electric charges, the layer of wiring is for connecting the individual photodiodes, and the layer of micron lenses is for directing lights towards the photodiode.

WHAT IS A BSI SENSOR? • Because the layer of wiring sits in front of the photosensitive layer, it prevents some light from reaching the photodiode. The best way to picture this in your mind is by looking through a screen door. Even though you are able to see outside well enough, the overall image is slightly dimmed because of the presence of a wire mesh between you and the scene. With the increase in the resolution of cameras, the density of wiring in the layer of wiring has also gone up. Picture the same screen door, but now with a mesh that is getting tighter and tighter. This will blur the image of the real object because a lot of light will be blocked. Due to this, close to 20 to 70 percent of light is blocked from the photodiode.
