DAPCEP: An Investment In Our Children’s Future! What’s NEW at DAPCEP? Executive Director Jason Lee explains the new $25 Application Fee
Q: What options do you offer parents? A: The fee is $25 per child or $100 for families with more than four children to enroll. We also offer financial assistance of as much as a 50% discount on the $25 per child fee for families who meet our criteria.
It’s time for Fall Program enrollment for Grades 4-12! Enrollment period: Sept. 16-18, 2013 For course offerings and online application visit: www.dapcep.org
Q: Will you continue to fundraise?
Q: Why does DAPCEP now have to charge an application fee? A: Because of changes in regional philanthropy, economic conditions and the need for increased organizational self-reliance, we decided it would be best to implement an individual application fee for our programs. Q: When will the new application fee go into effect? A: The application fee starts this fall for our Saturday programs. Q: Does the $25 fee cover the entire cost for student participation? A: No, the average cost per student is $200 - $250 for Saturday programs.
A: Yes! We will continue to identify organizations and individuals interested in supporting the development of our potential STEMM professionals.
What Else is New?
Q: What happens if a student isn’t selected for participation in DAPCEP? A: A credit voucher will be included with the student’s non-accept letter. The student will be encouraged to participate in the next Saturday program session, where the credit can be utilized. Q: Do you expect an impact on enrollment? A: We’re aware there may be an initial impact on our enrollment. But we believe parents understand DAPCEP is a solid investment in their child’s future and there will be a positive adjustment.

Who is an Explorer? A DAPCEP Explorer is a Pre-K-3rd grade student who is eager to let his or her imagination explore the challenges of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics concepts. New Explorers: The Tinsley Family’s Story
started so he’d know what to expect.” Rion’s parents enrolled him into the Explorers Program Summer session at University YES Academy in Detroit, and a whole new world opened up for him.
A Smart Difference
Challenging Young Minds When eight-year old Cornerstone School student, Rion Tinsley grows up, he wants to design cars as a design engineer. His mother, Unia Tinsley says Rion plays video games with cars and he can identify cars he sees on the street. “But I don’t think he understands technology and the definition of it… how it all goes together with math and science,” she says. After learning about DAPCEP from Rion’s grandmother, Unia said she thought it was just the challenge her son needed. Rion’s father is a DAPCEP alum. “Since he’s been in school, Rion’s been at the top of his class, and his best subjects are math and science,” Unia says. “So I figured DAPCEP would challenge him and he’d see what it really is to be an engineer, get him
One of the benefits of the Explorers program is the use of Smart Board technology in the classroom. It aids in making the lessons interactive, an element both Rion and his mother appreciate. “Rion had never worked with a Smart Board before,” says Unia. “It gives him new excitement about becoming an engineer.”
Explorers Fall Session Starts Sept. 21, 2013! To enroll your child in the DAPCEP Explorers Program, please submit your completed application by Sept. 18, 2013. Call the DAPCEP office for more information: 313-831-3050. The DAPCEP Explorers Program is a partnership with FasTracKids.
From the hallway, Rion’s parents are able to watch him in class and see him in action. “He’s like ‘choose me!’ When he gets up there he’s really excited. But he loves technology... he always has.” Rion says, “I like it because I can make stuff, and design stuff. I wanna be an engineer and design everything! Like this building and cars.” 2
Sessions are held at University YES Academy 14669 Curtis Street in Detroit.

READY! SET! MENTOR! One Saturday morning in March, 60 young men in DAPCEP’s READY Program created paper “critters” with students in DAPCEP’s K-3 Little Engineer That Could program. The young men were genuinely enthusiastic about working with the children. “It was a good opportunity,” said 17-year-old Donte Conley, an 11th-grader at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, who worked with 2nd-grader Warren Mallory. “With me being older in DAPCEP, it was like being on the ladder and going down to pull somebody else up.”
The READY program is a fouryear initiative designed to prepare and motivate 120 young men from historically underrepresented backgrounds, to pursue the education necessary for careers associated with the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RE&EE) industries. Students participate in academic programming, mentoring and a service learning project. The program is funded by the John S. & James L. Knight Foundation, the Skillman
Foundation and the W. K. Kellogg Foundation with program partners UAW-GM, Oakland University, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Michigan State University, Lawrence Technological University, University of Detroit Mercy and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity – Detroit Alumni Chapter.
DAPCEP SPOTLIGHTS K-12 Student Success 2013! Guadalupe Salazar graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit as a member of the National Honor Society with a 4.2 grade point average. With guidance from DAPCEP, over the summer he attended the University of Michigan as part of its M-STEM Academy, which is designed to maximize the academic, personal, and professional success of students, with the goal of preparing them for the engineering global workforce. Students in M-STEM begin classes in the summer, to prepare them for the fall regular session. “I’ll be majoring in Chemical Engineering in the fall here, and I feel very prepared to study engineering, because I was in DAPCEP,” says Guadalupe.
