TRADITION Given the program of convention center we researched convention centers and found that they are conventionally rigid.

INNOVATION Wanting to innovate the program we broke up the chuncky mass that a convention center typically is. opening up a void of activity that would complete transform the space.

THE EXPO CONVENTION / EXHIBITION CENTER THE EXPO side facilitating a slightly more enclosed experience with thought bubbles, a FLEX SPACE break out rooms, 800 ft of gallery and an island-inspired floor plan, creating an inner flowing walkthrough. THE FLEX SPACE is a inner FLEX CORE within the EXPO. The FLEX SPACE can open up to be one giant hall and condense down to be 6 small private exhibitions. Near that is a lecture space for important flown in talkers who can enjoy the vip rooms in the back. LAstly, we have thoughtbubble which are uncoventional spaces that do the ice breaking by being differnt environements of activity. Some Thoughbubbles have only swings as seatings others have all the walls as distorted mirors to break the serious mood and get guests to start thinking freely as well as openly with eachother. Gping down to the first level is the service side of the EXPO and is what keeps the lights on of the MULTI-CORE. We have a scaled down food square and the front desk. With a all encompassing and interactive gallery space on the right hand side of each level.

THE FLEX CORE CONVENTION / EXHIBITON CENTER The FLEX CORE captures our biggest transitional movements through the work of operable doors and roof, sheltering differently for different program purposes like a concert, tournament, or giant sculpture. The roof can also open fully to take advantage of the connection to surrounding buildings and the Kansas sky. The roof and walls within the FLEX CORE are able to move in response to the event being held. As seen by the example events of a CARNIVAL, a CONCERT, and a TOURNAMENT. The Carnival calling for a FULLYOPEN Multi-Core as seen in the first two examples. The Concert being more of a singular focused event has the Flex Core closed on one end to allow the performer more of a moment and open at the other end to allow for a in and out audience. Lastly the Tournament being a specific audience has the roof and walls closed to conform into a private event.

THE KITCHEN CONVENTION / EXHIBITON CENTER THE KITCHEN works to provide all the people THE EXPO and FLEX CORE can house as well as the Berkley Riverfront public with the most essential part of any program, FOOD. While also filtering some unconventional experiences of convention and exhibition within itself. Having a traditional food and bar on the 1st floor with a center stage of themed a day activity. The 2nd floor housing the hands on exercise of that activity with a peoples watcher section up above. The theme within the MUlTI-CORE reaches all three spaces distinctly. THE KITCHEN not only has a stage where a ted talk about space can happen as well as a second level where interactive robotic arms are there to play with while also having a sculpture gallery walk right outside inbetween each kitchen pod. The Kitchen acts as an informal gallery, comedy club, TED talk venue, a date night restaurat as well as much more.

THESIS CONERSTONES Big Idea Throughout our design process, we have been inspired by many different aspects of Denver. Our biggest source of inspiration was drawn from the sense of touch. Since we are designing a school for the blind and visually impaired, we were brought in to observe and talk to students in the visually impaired community, as well as, participate in a class of our own to experience the world of visual impairments.

In our design, we pinpointed the four majorly important spaces in the school: the gym, library, music room, and life skills room, and deigned them as the cornerstones of the building. While the classrooms obviously teach them useful school information, the cornerstones are the most important tools for the kids to learn about real life. These rooms teach the kids how to move around and recognize where they are in space.

The way to best move around and learn to recognize the space we were in was best learned through the sense of touch. I could tell which room I was in based on the texture of the wall and the feel of the chairs. Since this was the first time we had ever experienced this type of sensory deprivation, it is safe to say we felt quite lost and confused most of the exercise.

Tying into the cornerstone idea, each pod of classrooms act as a point of connection between the cornerstones, pulling the students into each space in a fun and interactive way. The pod is two classrooms that are tied together with a sensory room in the middle, allowing for ease of access, so that anything that a kid needs, they will have access to for themselves with no problems. The school is designed to give the kids a feeling of independence that they may not have experienced earlier in life. The halls are designed with minimal doorway disruptions so the kids can practice walking through a hallway, either learning to use a cane, or to use the wall to guide them into each space using the sensory wall. This style of thinking introduces elements of repetition for ease of access, and change in wall direction to indicate the entrance to a specific room, as well as sensory walls leading to different spaces within the building.

Since the sense of touch was so important in communication and transportation, my partner and I made that our focus around the design. Starting from the building shape, the idea of touch set forward the concept of cornerstones. Cornerstones are arguably the most important part of any building. This stone is the strongest part of the building and supports it the most. Cornerstones are reliable, strong, and capable of handling anything the building needs.

CORNERSTONES CONNECTION

First step was to find the four corners of the given site and set our anchors each place, using the Anchor Center across the strreet to guide our position.

As the cornerstones of the building stand strong on the street connection of Roslyn and 26th, the classrooms act as a connecting force between each cornerstone, drawing each piece together.

ITERATIONS & PROGRAMMING ANCHOR/WAYFINDING/SITE Our sketches here represent which angle of Braille to focus on. Specifically, going from left to right, each gathering of sketches represents the contrast of shadow that exists from the Braille bump that is made and makes light filtering through look very interesting. Then, to focus more on the students themselves, to create a space that has both a direct corridor through the center of the space, and an indirect corridor that allows for the students to practice without fear of the hallway getting too crowded. Lastly, this sketch shows a realistic version of what a building inspired by Braille might look like. The building dots spell CO for Colorado in a plan view, and wrap around the courtyard in the center, with the spaces between the dots becoming large open spaces and sensory spaces.
