cu•ri•ous | adj. 1. eager to know or learn something 2. strange; unusual
Welcome! I am Darby Williams, graphic designer and creative thinker. I am passionate about design that sparks curiosity. I create in this same curious manner. Using both hands on and digital practices I am able to come up with solutions that would not have been discoverable without this type of approach. I value both structure and play, a kind of juxtaposition that allows me freedom within my design process.

Focus Event branding identity
Deliverables 11x17 poster, postcard, Facebook banner graphic, Instagram animated .gif
Design Challenge Design an engaging and cohesive event identity across media that announces Point Loma Nazarene University’s (PLNU) 2021 Senior Show. It must celebrate the visual arts and graphic design senior capstone work and experiences. The design must clearly inform, create a call to action, and capture the spirit of PLNU and it’s graduates.
Solution I wanted to focus on emotion in my design. Thinking about the past year and the hurdles that were placed in front of this senior class I decided to work off of the cliche phrase ‘its only up from here’. An idea that things are looking up, that there is a lot to look forward to in the season that follows graduation. In order to communicate this idea I incorporated bright colors, created a sense of upward movement through imagery, arrangement of typography, and the shapes created within the negative spaces.

Deliverables Business card, postcard/thank you note, letterhead, second sheet, #10 envelope.
Design Challenge Create a cohesive and lasting personal brand that communicates who you are as a designer, thinker, visionary, etc. This should be reflective of your personality as well as the way you approach the design world. This should be unique to you and able to communicate that you are a professional and experienced designer.
Solution My personal brand is backed in the tagline of ‘curious design’, a statement that captures the reasons I am interested in design. Being curious in approach, in experimentation, in reason, these are all things that make up who I am as a designer—as well as in my individuality. The asterisk mark communicates that curiosity and my eagerness to learn and know more; to explore and discover.

Deliverables Instagram .gif
Design Challenge Design a 26 seconds or less animated short or motion graphic using Adobe After Effects or another preferred software. Develop a storyboard using your assigned topic. Create your story with a logical beginning, middle and end flow. Develop the animation within your own unique style.
Solution I created a single looping animation with simple lines and shapes. The information is visually digestible while also keeping the viewer engaged in order to get the message across. I broke down the original copy to the most important points and matched the imagery with the narrative. The final animation was done in an application called Looom.
motion design
Original Copy Did you know a flight from London to Rome produces 22 times more carbon emissions than taking the train? Flying also encourages people to travel longer distances, at huge carbon costs. One return transatlantic flight emits the same amount of carbon as 13 years of a family’s electricity emissions combined. You might also be surprised that only 18% of the world’s population has ever set foot on a plane, yet everyone pays the price of the emissions. International rail can often be more expensive than flying — whilst this is still the case, how about seeking out the hidden gems in your own country?
Edited Copy Flying encourages people to travel longer distances, at huge carbon costs. Only 18% of the world’s population have stepped foot on a plane, yet everyone pays the price of the emissions. Ditch planes for trains and discover the hidden gems in your own country.

Deliverables 2 [11x17] Posters
Design Challenge Create two 11x17 promotional posters for the Alexander Girard exhibit at Palm Springs Museum of Art. These posters should reflect the spirit of Girard through type, image, color, and message. .
Solution Working in the spirit of Girard through creative play I was able to create strong imagery that was reflective of the exhibit. The main focus of both posters is the imagery. I felt this to be important because much of Girard’s artwork is bright and bold. The type comes second, but still communicates all of the necessary information in a direct way for the viewer to digest.

Design Challenge Create a multi-page publication that showcases a collection of your choice within the Cooper Hewitt Museum of Design. Include all necessary information about your chosen collection, as well as information about the museum. Use the museum’s brand manual to make decisions for your publication that are cohesive with the brand.
Solution I chose to showcase the Digital Collection: Materials and Objects. Studying the Cooper Hewitt brand manual intently gave me good direction in my design decisions for color and type placement as well as alignment choices throughout the publication.

Deliverables Merch, cover art
Design Challenge Design an illustration that is able to be applied to merch materials, t-shirts and tote bags. The design should reflect Hannah Mundine's single Don't Get it Twisted. The illustration should include the song title as well as the artist's name.
Solution The illustration is a visual representation of the song title, ‘Don’t Get it Twisted’. I created a continual one line drawing of two faces intertwining with one another. It becomes an abstract visualization of the story that is told within the song lyrics. For the cover art the photography, provided by Melanie Robertson, is the main focus. I added the typographic elements from the illustration that communicate the genre.

Deliverables Brand manual
Design Challenge Choose a restaurant from the provided list. Through extensive research create a new brand identity for your chosen restaurant. This should reflect the restaurants values and ideals. Apply the finalized brand logo to various touch-points across media. Combine the brand standards within a brand manual.
Solution I chose to rebrand Hunan Slurp located in New York. I focused on the restaurants culture that is heavily backed in the Hunan province. I took inspiration from the colors, shapes and the values of the Hunan province. Landing on the theme of harmony reflected in the flavors of the food, the community of the people, and artistic background of chef Chao Wang.

Deliverables Fully bound book
Design Challenge The Driftwood is a creative arts journal that is published every year. Showcasing poetry, fiction, nonfiction, art, photography, film, and music from Point Loma Nazarene University students, faculty, and alumni. Having full control create a printed book containing all content that is provided. Define a theme that is carried throughout the publication. The publication must contain section breakers, a table of contents, artist biographies, section judge biographies, and a dedication page.
Solution I created an interactive journal that allows the reader to be just as much part of the publication as the chosen authors and artists. There are prompts at the end of each section that correlate with the content genre. The size and structure of the book is similar to a pocket book, made to be carried with you everywhere. The idea is to have an outlet for readers to connect with their own creative self expression.

Thank you! Thank you to my wonderful professors who have provided me with the tools to be a successful designer. Who have influenced me in more areas than just design. Thank you to my parents who have been more than supportive throughout my higher education. Who have continually been there for me through seasons of difficulty and celebration. Thank you to the friends that have encouraged me along the way. I appreciate you all more than I am able to express.
I am grateful for the art education that I have obtained at Point Loma Nazarene University. I have gained ample knowledge and skills that I am able to take with me in my future endeavors. I look forward to continually learning and growing in the design field. My higher education really opened my eyes to the ways in which I can achieve success. It is with great pleasure that I have been able to express my creativity through my philosophy of curious design. I am eager to continue this journey of discovery.
Stay curious, Darby
