FLAWLESS: Chore Delegation App

Page 1

For this app, the user will select the chores that need to be completed by all the members of your household and the app will rotate them and send what tasks need to be done per day. Each person living in home must have the app, but it us a fair way to delegate housework. This app may also be used in business setting such as a restaurant to assign tasks to workers. FLAWLESS keeps track of who has/has not completed their chores or tasks while avoiding confrontation.

NEEDS & MOTIVATIONS Naomi owns a handful of successful restaurants in New York City and is currently in the process of opening a new one. She does not have time to look for a newmanager for this new restaurant, so she will be standing in until she can find one. Because her hands are always tied she is looking for a solution to manage and keep on top of her staff. FRUSTRATIONS & CONSTRAINTS Naomi is always on the go so she needs something that can be ready on the go whenever she is. She has very little time to communicate with her staff so her solution must be quick and clear in reaching the employees of her restaurants.

NEEDS & MOTIVATIONS Claudia is a student and part time Barista attending the University of Pennsylvania tostudy Finances. Between her academic life and her professional life she often needs a reminder of what needs to be done at home. FRUSTRATIONS & CONSTRAINTS Due to Claudia’s tight schedule she often misses house meetings, causing her roommates to become frustrated with her when she fails to do her chores.

NEEDS & MOTIVATIONS Luther rents out the room’s of his daughters and is a live-in landlord. Luther’s schedule differs from his tenants. So he is seeking a way to communicate with them effectively to let them know what needs to be done around the house. FRUSTRATIONS & CONSTRAINTS Luther has experience as an engineer in the military but does not consider himself extremely tech savvy, so he is looking for a solution that he will be simple enough for him to understand.

Understanding users’ primary external goals and internal needs will guide decisions about the app’s characteristics and functionality.

PROS -traditional and easy to access, paper is almost always available to write down a task list -tangible, you have a hard copy for your records CONS -paper schedules and tak sheets can’t be sent and distributed as quickly as a digital schedule can -if there is a scheduling error or issue, it must be re-printed -creates waste, digital scheduling is more eco-friendly HOW FLAWLESS WILL BE BETTER -information sent in an instant from boss to employee -information can be sent from anywhere, saving time for boss or manager -digital, so it does not create waste

PROS -quirky and simple design -accessible on the web and in mobile app format -digital, so it does not create waste -has a reward system and games -can connect to social media to share achievements CONS -can be used by adults, but aims more specifically for children (targets ages 6-8) -reward program more aimed for children, lacking a way to incentivize for adults HOW FLAWLESS WILL BE BETTER -a broader focus that includes all ages, app will not only be catered to children -offer rewards that are appealing to all ages

PROS -can access schedule and create schedules online, then can be printed CONS -site is not user friendly, poorly designed, appears oudated -no mobile app component -no reward system HOW FLAWLESS WILL BE BETTER -will be designed in a way that excites and encourages the user -have mobile app access

I chose to go with a monochrome color palette for the color scheme of “FLAWLESS. The purpose of this app is to clearly and simply delegate tasks or chores and track when they have been completed. Therefore, I wanted to choose simple, no-nonsense, sleek colors. Having a monochrome color palette keeps the app clean and minimal, focusing more on the function of the app than distracting patterns and bold colors.

I chose to use 2 weights of Avenir for the “FLAWLESS”app. I chose to use Avenir Black for titles and callouts and Avenir Book for sub-titles and body copy. I chose this typeface because it is clean and simple, as well as pleasing to the eye. The simplicity of my font choices speaks to “FLAWLESS”’s brand message, which is to be clear and concise in delegating tasks and what needs to be done.

I decided to choose this logo deisgn because it speaks to “FLAWLESS”’s philosphy and aesthetics. This logo design is clear and simple, just like the interface of “FLAWLESS”. I created the logo with elements and designs I have been using throughout the my deisgn work for the app. So it is cohesive with all of the deisgns created for “FLAWLESS”. I chose to abbreviate the title in the design for the app as well, making it more trendy and geometric (in terms of looking at the word as a shape.)

For the app icon, I kept the logo off center, which relates back to the way I have been laying out my deisgns for the “FLAWLESS app, asymettrically. I added a layer of shine for greater dimension, since the design of my icon is flat.

This image will appear briefly whenever a user opens the app. When the app has loaded, this image will disappear and the user will be able to decide whether they want to continue to sign in as a Delegator or a Chore Completor.

In the opening sequence, the user must choose whether or not they want to use this app as a Delegator or a Chore Completor. From then on they are led to their respective home screens. The options per homescreen differ per user type.

ASSIGN TASKS Through a dropdown system, the Delegator can assign a particular task to a specific user from the palm of their hand.

CHECK IN The check in page shows the Delegator a list of the user and the task they were assigned, next to is the status of the task’s completion. If the task is not complete, the Delegator can check off the incomplete task and send a reminder.

DELEGATION HISTORY Using a calendar or the search bar, the delegator can select a date to see what they have assigned and what has been completed on a particular day.

TO DO LIST

REWARDS

Chore completor has access to a list of the items they must complete, when completed they must check off they have done so. And vice vera, if they do not complete a task they can check it off or the system will assume it as incomplete.

Over time the user will accrue points for completing tasks. With these points they can go to the Rewards store page and redeem their points for a prize of their liking.

REWARD STATS The user can check their points spent as well as how many points in total they’ve accrued, this info can also be viewed in graph format.

REWARD HISTORY Using a calendar or the search bar, a user can select a date to see what they completed, what points they earned, and what points they spent on a particular date.

The settings page (accessible to both Delegator and Chore Completor) allows the user to enable push notifications to notify user of any updates, social media connectivity to publish accomplishments, an option to enable auto updates of the app, and an option to reset the application and start fresh if needed. The settings page is identical for both types of users.

You have just downloaded this app and have opened it for the first time. Before you tap anything, explain what you think is happening, what you are being asked to do, and why. Try to add a new task as a Chore Delegator and check in on tasks that have been completed.

Explore anything else in the app you are curious about or interested in. If something doesn't work, explain what you are trying to do and what you think would happen if that feature were working.

Imagine you have just downloaded this chore delegation app. You are interested in either delegating chores to other individuals or being a part of a group and keeping track of what responsibities you have. NOTE: This project is still in the early stages and you will be looking at a prototype made of sketches. It has limited functionality. If something doesn't work, please just explain what you think it would do.

AGE 28 GENDER MALE

Perceived this app to be for moms or parents, initially didn’t think they would use this app.

TECH COMFORT AVERAGE DEVICE IPHONE 6 OTHER ENTREPRENEUR, RUNS OWN BUSINESS

Easily navigated adding a new task as a Chore Delegator and checked in on tasks that have been completed.

Confused by the placement of back button throughout the app. Suggested that there should be a page for the Delegator to approve points so points don’t get handed out for work that actually is not complete.

Suggested that their are partnerships formed with other companies so the prizes offered could be something like a coupon code for a service (more practical for adult users).

AGE 59 GENDER FEMALE TECH COMFORT BELOW AVERAGE DEVICE IPHONE 5 OTHER SPEECH TEACHER FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

Perceived the app as clean and organized, was not suprised that it’s purpose was for organizational and productivity purposes.

Easily navigated adding a new task as a Chore Delegator and checked in on tasks that have been completed.

Found the icons a little confusing, suggested they could be a little more detailed in communicating their function for the application.

Enjoyed the app but suggested their was some type of alternate app aimed more at children, stated they need a system like this to incentivize completing chores.

AGE 23 GENDER FEMALE

Perceived the app to be some type of business or productivity app due to the nature of the app’s design.

TECH COMFORT ABOVE AVERAGE DEVICE IPHONE 6 OTHER ART STUDENT WITH PART TIME JOB

Easily navigated adding a new task as a Chore Delegator and checked in on tasks that have been completed.

Questioned why there was no screen for approving points that are awarded, found the layout of the app visually appealing and easy to use.

Encouraged app icon exploration, understood the icons but felt they could be designed better or differently.

RECONSIDER BACK BUTTON

ADD SCREEN FOR POINT APPROVAL

Almost all of my user’s suggested to move or redesign the back navigation throughout the app as they found it confusing.

Formerly there was no way to regulate the points, so I will be adding a page for the Delegator to approve points so points don’t get handed out for work that actually is not complete.

ICON EXPLORATION While all the user’s were able to use and navigate through the app with the current icons, they suggested exploring more understandble designs for the icons.

ADDED POINT APPROVAL SCREEN

By adding this point approval screen it prevents users from receiving points that they did not actually earn. It acts as another level of screening and security for the delegator.

MOVED THE BACK BUTTON

All of my test users were comfused by the placement of my back button in my initial lo-fi prototype. It is now easy to find in the top right of every screen.

REVISED ICONS

ACCENT COLOR

For both the Chore Completor and Delegator, I re-did the icons to make it clearer and understandable for the user to identify where they are going in the application.

While the monochrome theme evokes a chic and clean look, the app was beginning to look boring. By adding a vibrant accent color it gave the app more interest and personality. It also made it easier to see some of the icons and smaller call-outs.
