Principal’s Comments Welcome back as we embark on the 2019 school year. We are fully staffed and have welcomed into the school 140 new students and 10 new staff. Thank you to our Year 12 Peer Supporters who are working with the Year 7 students this term to help them settle in and get to know the school and each other. Over the summer break the digital technology (computing) classrooms were moved to C Block to be alongside the rest of the Technology Department. Work also commenced on two new science laboratories. These refurbishments will be ongoing through Term One and will require some constraints with rooming and access in the meantime. We have also commenced the design phase of the refurbishment of E Block – the oldest block still remaining in the school and well overdue for modernisation.
Congratulations to our students for their successes with NCEA last year. Provisional results show that Darfield High School had a higher percentage of certificates achieved than the Decile 8-10 average for NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3. There was also a big increase in University Entrance attainment. We will publish the full breakdown of results once they are finalised. There will be a special assembly on 19 February to present certificates and badges to students who attained Merit and Excellence endorsements last year. We have implemented a new student management system called Kamar. This is the database that manages student information, assessment data, attendance, timetables and reporting. Some changes to how things operate will be introduced through the year. Some emails and texts will also be
sent out via Kamar and so will look a little different. We will keep you updated regarding changes to how you access the Parent Portal to see reports, attendance and assessment information. The school works hard to keep you in touch with what is happening but we are a busy school and so it can be a challenge to keep up. This newsletter is published three times per term and there is a weekly email sent on Fridays with events and notices. In addition, year level Deans and classroom teachers may send emails to let you know about specific events and issues. As such, it is important that we have up to date email contacts, so please let us know if you have changed emails or you don’t think you are receiving communications from us. James Morris

I emigrated from Hungary in 1982 to be united with my family who were already in New Zealand.
Hi, my name is Lilly Dalley and I’m one of the Year 7 teachers. I am originally from Wellington but have lived in Darfield for many years. I am really looking forward to everything this year has to offer.
I travelled the world and, after graduating from Canterbury, I worked at Baylor’s College of Medicine in Houston as a Research Technician working on Brain and Medicines. When I returned to New Zealand my children inspired me to become a teacher and I graduated in 2003 from the Christchurch Teachers' College. I worked in a number of schools in the South Island and also in the North Island. I also taught in the UK, particularly in London, for a number of years. After having my third child, I took a break but I couldn’t stay away too long and I returned to teaching in 2012. I was fortunate to teach both Science and Mathematics in Auckland and when the opportunity came I moved down to the South Island. I am fortunate to join Darfield High this year and to get to live my passion. I love working with students from all different backgrounds and enjoy and relish inspiring learning. There is just no better feeling than seeing one of your students finally “get it”. I am looking forward to working with the students, teachers and families of Darfield this year.

I'm originally from the UK but New Zealand has been my home now for almost 14 years. As a child and a teenager, I grew up in the UK, Germany and Brazil. Before qualifying as a teacher in 2007, I was an aeronautical design engineer and later an IT contractor specialising in multimedia and web design. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, travelling, tramping and flying my plane.
Kia Ora! I'm Miss Vickery and I'm one of the new PE and Health teachers at DHS. I have taught at large, small, rural and city schools before. But it's lovely to be working at a rural school again. I am enthusiastic about creating positive learning experiences through Health and PE. I'm looking forward to this year and what will come of it.

Hi, I'm Nathan Bergin, the new teacher in the Science department. This year, I'm teaching Years 8 to 12, with Chemistry at Year 12. I was born and raised in Greymouth and ended up moving back there to teach for the last four years. So far, I've really loved the move to Darfield; the staff and community are so supportive, and I see my move here as a natural progression, building on my previous work in rural schools, with DHS the largest one to date. I'm looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that working at DHS affords, once I get used to the change in climate from the West Coast!
Hi, I’m Megan Evans. I have spent the past five years at Rangiora High School teaching Digital Technologies, Business Studies, Enterprise and Construction Mechanical Technology. A graduate of Darfield High School, I am excited to start the next step of my teaching career here as Teacher in Charge of Digital Technologies. I hope to start up a Code Club for interested students and begin growing electronics and robotics coding into the school. Outside school I am an avid horse rider bringing on young horses to compete in open showing classes.

Hi. My name is Philip Walton. I am married with two daughters and soon to be a grandparent. I am teaching PE to Years 7, 8, 10, and 12, and, teaching Year 13 Outdoor Education. I taught at Waimate High School last year; other previous schools have been Twizel Area School, Taumarunui High School, and Paraparaumu College. I have also lectured in Exercise Physiology at the College of Education. My main interests are young people's personal development and their well-being.

Hello Everyone!
My name is Michelle Bruce and I’m Head Girl for Darfield High School in 2019. I’ve been attending Darfield High School since 2013 , when I began as a Year 7 student.
My name is Jackson Proud and I am very proud (no pun intended) to be one of the Head Prefects at Darfield High School for 2019. I would like to use my role to strive for a better relationship between the students and the team of Head Prefects. Also, our push is to get Darfield High School more involved in the community.
I’ve really enjoyed my years at Darfield, I’ve had access to so many opportunities in and out of the classroom. I am really looking forward to the work that 2019’s prefects are going to get up to. The group of prefects has been carefully selected, to properly represent the values Darfield holds—and we are all very enthusiastic to enact positive change in the school and community. I advise all students (especially new students) to take every opportunity with open arms, whether it is sporting, cultural or educational. Let’s make the most of 2019. It's still scary to think that I am Year 13 already and even more scared for the real world in 2020 and what i’m going to do. I am the youngest of six children in my family who have all attended Darfield High School, so I guess you can say that Darfield High School is a part of our family, and will be for our future years. I have been involved in a lot of activities at school, mainly involving sport. My favourite activity would be the senior A basketball team; even though we weren't very successful we still enjoyed each other's company and learnt a lot about what it means to be a team. I welcome all new students to Darfield High School, and encourage everyone to do their best to get involved in every opportunity they can, because it's not about winning; it's about having fun and learning something you wouldn't in your everyday life. STUDENT SUCCESSES Celebrating the successes of our students is important. There are a number of areas that students excel in. Whether this is part of or outside of the DHS community, please feel free to let us know, so we can celebrate their achievements with the whole community.

Swim Champions The Swimming Canterbury West Coast (SCWC) Senior Long Course Champs were held from 17—20 January down in Dunedin. They swam heats in the morning and then returned for the finals in the evenings. Ethan Taylor (Year 13) won four individual Silvers in the 200 fly, 400 medley, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke. A bronze in the 50 metre breaststroke, and Silver in a medley relay. Chloe Newbigging (Year 10) made the finals for all of her races, winning Gold in the 200 Individual Medley and Silver in the 13-14 women's freestyle relay.
Charlise Miller (Year 9) was also part of the relay team with Chloe and made it to several finals. Ben Smith (an ex-student) also attended. On 26 and 27 January, SCWC held the Junior Champs at Jellie Park. Holly Smith (Year 8) won Silver in the 200 backstroke, Bronze in the 400 freestyle and Bronze for a relay. Jessie Smith (Year 7) won Bronze in her 200 backstroke.
All these students are part of Waitaha Swim Club. Chloe and Ethan train seven to eight times a week; three of those are morning sessions starting at 5.30 am in Christchurch. They are preparing for National Age Group (NAGs) that will be held in the April holidays in Wellington. Holly is heading to Invercargill this weekend for her main competition Regional Makos Festival. Holly and Jessie train three to four times a week.
Academic Colours Assembly On Tuesday 19 February at 10.45 am Students who gained subject and/or certificate endorsements in NCEA 2018 will be recognised in this assembly. Family and friends are invited to attend the assembly and should come to the Staffroom about 10 minutes beforehand. 6

Scholarship The Malvern Lions Leadership Scholarship award was presented by Mr Rob Potts on behalf of the Malvern Lions, at the Years 9 and 10 Prize Giving at the end of last year. Leah Hamilton-Cross with her parents
The Lions are active in our local, national and international communities, fundraising and supporting a wide range of projects. The Malvern Lions Hillary Scholarship is to support developing leadership skills in students. Recipients will attend a five-day leadership camp on Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf. ART DEPARTMENT NEWS CONGRATULATIONS to Hayley Murray who has recently been selected as a finalist in the Zonta Female Art Awards 2019. One of 18 selected, her painting will feature in the Young Generation Category for female artists aged between 16 and 20 years old.

Nau mai haere mai Welcome On Tuesday 29 January, we welcomed our new staff members and new Year 7 students with a Mihi Whakatau, an official welcome. Today is a new beginning for us all. Today is the day that you become a student or staff member of Darfield High School. You become one of us. Acknowledge where you have come from, the previous schools that have nurtured you and prepared you for today. We have all come from somewhere else.

Year 7 Students Settling in to DHS With the help of the Peer Support leaders, the new Year 7 students are learning the ropes, meeting up with old friends and making some new ones, getting to know their new teachers and finding their way around their new environment. We welcome the 130 new Year 7 students, as they begin their journey here at Darfield High School.

Year 13 Presentations Year 13 Presentations (Year 12s are welcome too) are during Period 5 in C11 on the dates listed below. This is an opportunity to learn about the courses on offer, entrance requirements, scholarships that are available, clubs and social events and generally what life at Uni is all about. The advisors from each place are full of lots of very useful info and are also the ones that help throughout the year answering questions that you may have. They come back in Term Three and help plan courses too, so they are great to connect with now in preparation for this. It's always best to gather lots of information on all the opportunities that are on offer to help make a successful and informed decision.

Year 12 Discovery Day at the University of Canterbury Students will be receiving information through email from Mrs Ager on how to register for this amazing Year 12 day that takes place on 9 April. They get the opportunity to learn about Uni life and attend six lectures of their choosing. They don't have to be planning on going to UC to attend this day; it is an opportunity to experience University firsthand. The students last year found the day really useful and enjoyable. Keep an eye out for the registration information, and register before 22 March. 14

Houses When a student begins at Darfield High School, they become a member of one of the four Houses. Each House is run by a Staff Leader and a House Leader, a Year 13 student who liaises with the students. The House system was re-introduced to encourage a positive atmosphere at Darfield High School and to enhance participation in events and relationships among students. Students participate in various events, covering sporting, cultural and academic activities, to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to contribute. Placing in specific events and participation in events are both rewarded, provided that students are honouring the spirit of the event. The first of the House competitions was held on 5 February: House Colours Mufti Day. This is always a fun way to start off the House challenges, with some awesome costumes and bright colours! This Friday is the DHS Athletics Sports Day, which will also go towards your House points.

International Department
This year we welcome 18 new international students starting in Term 1, joining our 15 returning international students. This takes us to 33 in total, which is our highest number in recent times. They began the year with a two-day orientation programme, and enjoyed ice creams from the Dar- field Dairy, as well experiencing some Maori culture at the Mihi Whakatau. It is particularly exciting to welcome our first group of longer-term students from Set- agaya Gakuen in Tokyo. A big thank you to the buddies who have looked after our new students so well, and our staff, host families and the community for warmly welcoming them.

Year 13 Mufti Guidelines
Key considerations: The desire for a high standard of dress through providing guidelines for an appropriate standard of dress. Year 13 demonstrating leadership in action and appearance. Allowing some choice in recognition of senior role in school. The normal day wear for Year 13 students is either school uniform or very tidy mufti. Year 13 students are the student leaders in the school and their standard of dress should be equivalent to the formality of the normal school uniform. It is expected that students who represent the school at formal events will wear a school blazer or a formal black blazer. Very Tidy Mufti: • Shorts or trousers with zip fly • Skirts or dresses • Collared shirt or blouse • Blazer, jersey, cardigan, jacket • Rain jacket • Tie for formal occasions, eg Prize-giving, Assemblies during Terms 2 and 3 • Students should bring a change of clothes when required for sports activities Appropriate mufti is: • Clean, tidy and in good condition • Modest (ie all clothing should cover from shoulder to mid-thigh – no midriff showing) • Boys should be clean shaven • Jewellery (no visible piercings, except in ears) and make-up should not be excessive • Appropriate to situations (eg, for health and safety reasons, covered footwear is to be worn in Science Labs, Food and Nutrition Room, and Design Technology Rooms) • Any words, logos or images must be appropriate for school situation, eg no alcohol or drug connotations or offensive language Not permitted: • Sportswear: sports shoes, track pants, sports shorts, rugby jerseys • Beachwear • T-Shirts or singlets • Hoodies or sweatshirts • Extreme hair styles If unsure if an item is permitted, please check with the school in advance of wearing an item to school

Regional Diploma in Agriculture DHS Rural College, in conjunction with Lincoln University, is offering subjects from the Regional Diploma in Agriculture as night classes in 2019. You can complete the Diploma in two years, or select individual subjects for a Certificate of Proficiency. Semester One starts on Monday 18 February and the papers offered are 021R Soils and 0235R Pastures. Classes are held on Mondays and Thursdays from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm. For some students, this course may be eligible for Fees Free in 2019. Lost Property There is a large number of unclaimed items from last year. Please can you get your students to come and take a look if they know something has been misplaced. Parents: you are most welcome to come and check the clothing and items at Student Administration. If you have items that do not belong to you, please can they be returned to the Student Administration Office. Contact Details It is important that we have your correct contact details; please let us know of any changes. Parking Outside the School Outside the school on McLaughlins Road, is a no stopping zone. We need parents to observe the ‘No Parking or Stopping Zone’ between the School’s front gate and bus bay. To keep students safe, we need this area clear before and after school. There are signs indicating the restrictions. Opposite Darfield High School on McLaughlins Road, car parks are marked out and broken yellow lines are painted outside residents' driveways. Please ensure you park within the allocated car parks and not in front of residents’ driveways. The car parks outside the school hall are reserved for staff and visitors coming into the school. Your co-operation in this matter is appreciated. There is usually plenty of space around the bend towards Bangor Road, or south-west on McLaughlins Road.
