Merry Christmas. Wishing everyone a safe and restful break.

their secondary schooling. Together, we have had our highs and lows; our wins and our tears. We have got most things right and we have made mistakes, too. I hope you reflect on our time working together to support your children as a partnership that has grown and changed over the years, from uncertain beginnings to the pride of handing them over to the world.

Principal’s Comments As the 2018 school year draws to a close, so does my tenth year as Principal at Darfield High School. Schools are in a state of constant change. In the last 10 years at Darfield High School: • Our roll has grown from 680 to 830 students • 1200 students left school and 1350 have arrived • 60% of the staff are new; • Our parents have changed too (although many are still here 10 years later) • The BOT has changed—nobody on the Board today was there 10 years ago; and • We’ve also had new buildings, new technology, and new systems We must manage change; it is a fact of life. Change brings new opportunities and also new issues. The challenge is to hold on to what we value, respond to the things we are concerned about, and not assume that the way things were last year is how they are now. What worked

before may not be what is best now. Change is hard work. With all of this change, it is easy to get worried and confused that things are not happening as we would want. We are bombarded with news stories, social media, and comments from those around us about problems and issues locally and nationally in education. It is human nature to notice the failures rather than the successes. This is not to say challenges do not exist, but it can be easy to lose sight of the vast array of positives that happen at school. I hope our communication, through things such as the newsletter and school magazine, as well as your participation in school events, give you all some insight into the cool things your children do at school. In farewelling this year’s leavers, we also mark the end of a more involved school relationship for many parents. We have worked with you and your children to nurture them through to this, the end of

As the year ends, we also farewell staff who are moving on to their next chapter as they head off to new adventures: • • • • •

Mrs Pratt: Our Careers Assistant this year, is returning to teaching Ms Prior: Year 8 Homeroom teacher this year, moves to Clearview School Mrs Hamilton: DTG teacher for the last two years, moves to Hornby High Mrs Ellena: Mathematics teacher for the last two years, is retiring after 40 years teaching Ms Watherston: HOD PE and Year 13 Dean, has been at DHS for five years and moves to Rangi Ruru Girls’ School

Thank you to all our staff for their contribution to a successful year. The success of our students is strongly linked to the high quality of our staff, so we applaud you all for the range of ways you have found to go the extra mile for our students. Thank you for your hard work, patience and focus on the learning and achievement of our children. James Morris

Staff Changes It has been a pleasure to spend the last two years of my long teaching career at Darfield High School. It has always been my plan to leave with regrets and, I have plenty. January 2019 will have me thinking “what have I done?” This job has always been about relationships for me, helping young people to gain confidence and do their best. My plan is to look for a job that is less mentally demanding and has no homework so I have the energy to enjoy evenings and weekends again. Thank you to the students and staff who have shared this part of the journey with me. Barbara Ellena 2

Hi, I am Sarah Grenfell. Originally from South Africa, I spent many years travelling before settling in New Zealand 11 years ago. I have been lucky to call Darfield home for the past six years while my husband and I have been raising our three wonderful children. In addition to being a mum, I have enjoyed working for our family business, volunteering in the community, and making new friendships. I am enthusiastic about the arts and working with others in the community. I am excited to be moving in a new direction as the Arts Co-ordinator at Darfield High School.

On 10 November, at Christchurch’s new Athletics track, Nga Puna Wai, I broke the high jump record. I put the bar up to that height myself. My coach Brian said, “Believe in yourself, you will be able to get over it.” When I cleared the bar, I was relieved that the bar was still up and I cheered as soon as I realised. It was amazing. The record hadn’t been broken in 33 years and I did it! Jody McCarthy-Dempsey

Every Wednesday for six weeks during Term four, four teams travelled to Hagley Park to play in the Term Four Ultimate Frisbee Schools Tournament. There were two Year 10 teams Darfield Girls X and Darfield Boys X, and there were two Year 9 and 10 mixed teams, Darfield Girls Y and Darfield Boys Y.

Ultimate Frisbee

Overall, Darfield Boys X came out with only one loss after a tough but competitive game against Riccarton High School Boys and the Darfield Girls X came out with two losses. Jess and I both recommend you sign up for Ultimate Frisbee as all of us enjoyed our term playing. The game of the season would have been Darfield Boys X vs Riccarton High School Boys, as that was the repeat of the South Island Championship finals. Jess and Harley

17 DECEMBER 2018

On Thursday 6 December, seven groups of Year 10 Social Study Students got to present their ideas for something new in the community, to Sam Broughton the Mayor of Selwyn. Our groups were chosen as the ones with the most potential from earlier presentations done in our classes. We all had very cool ideas like a dog park, new sports stadium, life sized chess game for the reserve areas beside the 4 Square, new footpaths and zebra crossings between the High School and Primary School, electric car chargers and a high ropes course in McHugh’s Forest.

Breakfast Club with the Mayor

We all got to spend the morning presenting our ideas and eating pancakes with the Mayor. Sam asked us some great questions and also explained how the processes worked with the council and how they have three-year and ten-year plans for the district. It was a great experience as we got some great tips on whom to contact and some next steps to take. He

also has invited the group to the Rolleston Council buildings for morning tea with the other councillors and to pitch our proposals again. He felt they had real potential and at least one of them could be included in their future planning. Thank you to Mrs Lee for organising this great experience. Niamh Guy

LIBRARY

Maker Space Madness activities were very successful with Years 7 and 8 students. Winner of the Marbles and Magnets Challenge was 8MP with their marble pathway lasting a massive 50 seconds. Second was 7KK with 43.8 seconds. The library was a hive of activity with many book art projects, paper circuit cards, and sphero balls.

Ebooks and Audiobooks are available throughout the holidays—go to dhslibrary.nz The library has been busy this week issuing books for summer reading. We encourage our students to keep up with reading over the holidays because it is fun and it is also well documented that for some students there can be a reduction in their reading level over the long summer break. This 'summer slide' can make it difficult for students to catch up during the following year. Another interesting study that has emerged this year is from researchers at the Australian National University and University of Nevada in the US. This study revealed which countries are the world’s biggest bookworms and discovered that having more books growing up improves educational outcomes. "Adults with university degrees, but who grew up with fewer ISSUE 11 / DHS DISPATCH

books, had the same level of literacy as those who left school in Year 9, but who had a lot of household books as a teen. The study, published in the journal Social Science Research, found the number of household books at age 16 had a direct positive relationship with literacy, numeracy and IT skill in later years – independent of how much tertiary study a person did, or how often they read as an adult." RURAL COLLEGE

These last two terms I have taken part in Rural College. We have done many different practicals and learnt loads. During Term 3, we learnt about ruminants and different animal diseases like Mycoplasma Bovis and Bovine Tuberculosis. We also did projects like our wire boards where we learnt how to do different knots on different types of wire. Then, for the second term, we did practicals like electric fence, quad bike, battening, wire work and water pipes. We did these in small groups and then peer-assessed each other to see how much we knew about each practical. These last two terms have been really great as I have learnt so much and had heaps of fun. Welcome Year 6 students who currently attend one of the eight local Primary schools in the Malvern District were invited to DHS for a transition visit. The purpose of this visit is to help with their transition to the High School at the beginning of next year. The day is organised for the students to learn their way around the school, and meet their teachers for next year and, of course, their future classmates and new friends. A wonderful day was had by all. We welcome you all and look forward to seeing you at the start of 2019.

The second day of Year 10 activities was for full-on surfing. The weather was perfect and the waves sure were, too. At Sumner Beach, we met a pretty cool team of surfing instructors who guided us through the surf and what to be watchful for while being out in the rough environment of the sea. For most of the Year 10s, it was our first time surfing; however, that didn’t stop us from having a good time. To the Year 9s: I highly recommend you get amongst surfing because it is an opportunity not to be missed! Emily Cullen

YEAR 10

ACTIVITY DAYS

On Friday 23 November, I took the bike out of the garage, took it to school and threw it on the back of the Transit. We headed straight to Spencer Park where would ride one of the best bike tracks in Christchurch, Bottle Lake Forest. Bottle Lake is a 10 km bike track that consists of flat land tracks and downhill. I think it is one of the best beginner tracks anyone could do, especially when it also challenges your skills and abilities. All eleven of us found the track a fun experience; it displayed the skill a lot of us had, including those on push bikes. Mr Mac showed us the way of the track and kept an eye on us the whole way. There were some hard sections of uphill that really tested our skills physically. After the ride, the whole group was exhausted and chuffed with themselves, comparing their battle scars from the ride at the airport McDonald's. Overall, I really recommend this to anyone who wants to have a fun ride or to anyone who wants to do the activity days for Year 10 next year. Campbell Barrett

On Wednesday 21 November, some Year 10 students went to Adrenaline forest for our Activity Day. About 50 students went and we had so much fun. There were activities for each skill level and age. Some students got up to Level 6, the highest level. This activity was really fun and I highly recommend it to next year’s Year 10s. We were able to climb the trees where there were lots of obstacles to climb over to get to the end of the levels. It was a great day and I think everybody thoroughly enjoyed it. In our opinion, the best level was Level 5b, which had 16 flying foxes. It was a great opportunity. Becky Bruce and Ella van der Wilt

On Tuesday 11 December, Mrs Ferguson-Brown's Year 9 English class held the world premiere of a short film entitled The Highwayman. The film was a collaborative project based on Alfred Noyes's ballad by the same title. Students worked in small groups on a section of the story and had to write their own, original voice-over narration, design and make their sets, craft a storyboard/shooting plan, and then film and edit their scene. The scenes were all edited together to make the final short film. In addition to this, students also designed and made invitations, awards, voting sheets and accessories for the film's premiere. The red carpet (or, in this case, a "ribbon of moonlight" to reflect the original poem) saw lots of imaginative and stylish designs, ranging from buttonhole flowers, clutch purses, top hats, bow ties, and headbands, to lots of dark red love knots tied into the students' hair in tribute to the film's tragic heroine, Bess. The finished film is testament to the students' learning over the past two terms, and the premiere screening was greeted with a standing ovation from the audience.

Itinerant Music Trip

DARFIELD HOSPITAL

On 3 December, some Years 7 to 10 music students from Darfield High School got a chance to perform and entertain the residents at Darfield Hospital. For some of them it was their first experience of performing to an audience. It was a great outing and a wonderful experience for the music pupils.

Leaving Our Legacy This year, we were the first Year 7 students to be in J Block for a whole year. So, to leave our legacy, our teachers decided to create an indoor and an outdoor group to improve on our learning spaces. The first few lessons we learnt about our legacy and how important it was to leave our legacy for others. Throughout the term, we worked on our booklets and deciding what we would like to do to improve the space for future Year 7 students. We had to come up with an idea, plan it and record all the details we might need to complete it. Once we thought we had the final designs, we had Mr Morris come in and check them. He told each group whether they were able to complete their ideas or whether they needed to go back and rethink some of their them. We all had really interesting ideas and it was a perfect way to leave our legacy and to make J Block unique and fun.

MyTech CREATIONS For the first time in a long, long time, a new subject was released: MyTech. It is a subject for projects by Year 10 students, whose progress was assessed by teachers (and self) as they finished their creations. The subject started in Term 3 and, throughout the two terms, students worked on their projects and filled their portfolios. There were many impressive creations. For example, some people chose to make bike track tools that cut up tracks, or to make shelves. I decided to create a laptop from scratch. I am astonished by what some people have created this year and, on Monday 10 December, we displayed the projects in the DVC room for all the staff to see. If you are a Year 9 student this year, you should consider taking MyTech next year. Campbell Barrett and Ria Kelly

Year 9 Social Studies DRAGONS' DEN Friday 30 November dawned with much anticipation and trepidation for our Year 9 Students: this was the day they were pitching their innovative and enterprising ideas to a panel of expert judges. The students had two weeks in class to come up with a unique product or innovate an existing one. Their pitch needed to include a clear marketing plan with target audience identified, advertisements made, a brand name/logo and a functioning prototype. There was a huge range of ideas put forward, such as kicking tees with speakers and lasers to guide the rugby ball over the post, solar powered steam cleaning apparatus for farmers boots, flexi protractor to stop them snapping in your pencil case, and heated gumboots for dairy farmers. It was a very difficult job for the judges to decide on the overall winners, and the following groups were placed first in class: •

• •

9BE: Gortex Shoe liners by Daniel Holland, Peter CurdBourgeois, Izak Derik-Westaway, Wilson Bell and Beau Beadle 9CM: Umbrella Hooks by Isabella Stevenson, Emma Miles, Arjana Kremers, Emily Mangels, Piper Benbow and Jack BuistBrown 9MC: Bench’ize by Anna Smith, Charlotte Roberts, Emma Wason and Emma Coyle 9JR: Smart Pen by Sarah Gerritsen, Jemma Horn, Jess Henderson, Ericka Dela Pena and Heidi Hamilton

9NS: Suction Pencil Case by Marcel A’Court, Tiger MacRae, Shere-Kahn McLaren, Cameron Dickson

The top three groups of the whole year group were: Overall Winners: Thermal Phones by Charlotte Moana, Ashlee Kala, Cameron Newell, Vaughan Smart, Jeremy Bourhill and Logan Hindle Runners up: Monster Away Spray by Ava De Rooy, Sophie Dance, Hannah Hunter and Kohbyn Ross 3rd Place: Cuppa Umbrella by Megan Allan, Melissa Duncan, Bianca Duncan, Emily Morrison and Chloe Newbigging Cuppa Umbrella is an umbrella with a cup holder attached, which freed up your hands; really useful when watching sport or for professionals commuting to work on public transport. Monster Away Spray group were inspired when babysitting preschoolers who didn’t want to settle at bedtime. The spray is a mixture of essential oils to help calm and sooth your senses, and the judges said it smelt amazing and felt this product had real market potential. Thermal Phones used ground breaking technology for a phone case that can charge your phone using thermal energy. The group had an almost working prototype but the school 3D printer kept jamming. However, Vaughan Smart gave a

very convincing demonstration of how the technology worked, complete with am amp meter to measure the electricity; the science behind it was very impressive. A huge thank you to our expert judges, Mrs Harrington, Miss McIntyre and Mr Quinn, and also for all the hard work from our Year 9 Social Studies teachers who helped prepare the students for their presentations. Mural Brightens up Darfield Community Pool In July. the Selwyn District Council approached the Art department with a request for a mural to be painted for the Darfield Swimming Pool. The brief was very open, with the suggested theme of “What does Malvern look like?”. The Year 10 Art class took on this project and began brainstorming within this brief and applying their ideas in a painting spanning 10 panels. Once the subject matter had been established, six students—Mai, Rira, Leah, Rowan, Maia and Emily—took on the big job of composing each panel. For inspiration, students looked at both traditional and contemporary mural painting, and spent a lot of time devising a palette of colours which would unify the ten panels, but also keep within a budget. When it came time to finally paint the mural, the whole class worked together over five days in the Art room.

Painting the mural was an amazing opportunity for students to work on a large scale project, to work collaboratively and to create a piece of public art. A small ceremony, with the Art students and members of the Council, celebrated the installation of the mural on Wednesday. Artists involved: Mai Takata, Rira Takahashi, Leah Hamilton-Cross, Rowan Hickey, Maia Adams, Emily Cullen, Lauren Booth, Kristana Bonner, Tamzin Brunton, Brooke Thomason, Paris Taylor, and Emma Daniel-Wilson. Parking Outside the School

Outside the school on McLaughlins Road, is a no stopping zone. We need parents to observe the ‘No Parking or Stopping Zone’ between the School’s front gate and bus bay. To keep students safe, we need this area clear before and after school. There are signs indicating the restrictions. Opposite Darfield High School on McLaughlins Road, car parks are marked out and broken yellow lines are painted outside residents' driveways. Please ensure you park within the allocated carparks and not in front of residents’ driveways. The carparks outside the school hall are reserved for staff and visitors coming into the school. Your co-operation in this matter is appreciated. There is usually plenty of space around the bend towards Bangor Road, or south-west on McLaughlins Road.

Proposed Speed Limit Changes Have your say about proposed speed limit changes. The main focus has been speed limits on roads fronting schools. www.selwyn.govt.nz/speedlimitchanges If there are issues in relation to improvements to the school frontage these should be addressed to Stephanie Hautler (School Road Safety Coordinator) in the first instance. Council may have funding in the future for these types of improvement projects so we are collating and then evaluating them to determine if they are appropriate to be implemented.
