Outside The Classroom - Geography Field Trip

Principal’s Comments After a brief wet and cold snap, the weather has come right for camps and outdoor activities. Currently, Year 9 Camps are at the Craigieburn Environmental Lodge enjoying activities such as caving, kayaking, raft building and bush walks. Year 10 have been out, spending two days at the Onuku Marae in Akaroa and experiencing a range of cultural activities. Year 11 Outdoor Ed have been rafting on the Waimakariri for two days, and Year 13 Outdoor Ed went kayaking on the Rangitata for three days. Year 13 Biology has been at Orana Park studying monkeys and primates, and Year 12 Geography travelled to Mount Cook to study landforms. Whilst these trips and events can be expensive and disruptive to classroom activities, and take time to organise, we believe

they give students learning opportunities to develop skills and have experiences that cannot be replicated in the classroom. There has also been lots happening in sports with school events such as swimming, athletics and triathlon having taken place, as well as secondary school competitions in cricket and equestrian. There was also an inaugural Selwyn Athletics competition with students from the Selwyn secondary schools competing at the new Nga Puna Wai stadium.

The report by the Tomorrow’s Schools Taskforce was recently released and proposes a number of recommendations for the way that the education system is structured in NZ. Significant change to school management will happen if the recommendations are accepted and implemented. I encourage you to go to www.conversation.education. govt.nz to find out more and complete a feedback survey. James Morris

Two major school cultural events are underway with the school performance for ShowQuest and the school production of Grease now in progress. Best wishes to the staff and students involved.

DARFIELD HIGH SCHOOL

PTSA

Annual General Meeting

If you paid for a 2018 DHS Magazine last year and didn't receive one, please see Mrs Staddon in the office.

The next meeting and AGM 19 March at 7.30 pm DHS Staffroom Come along and meet the wonderful school helpers and fundraisers. All of the money raised goes back into the school to help our students.

New Members Welcome

What’s happening? – PTSA News New Year – new look, so they say. The AGM of the PTSA is on Tuesday 19 March 2019 in the Darfield High School Staffroom at 7.30 pm. With the retirement of one long- standing member whose children have flown the coop, and two more parents doing their final year this year, we are looking for some new faces. Believe me, for those of you who feel you have done your time on a Primary School PTA, this is a breeze! No weekly commitments of hot lunches or selling raffles! Meetings are kept as short as possible and we have about five or six fundraisers a year. You don’t have to attend all.

The money that we raise gets put back in to the school by way of supporting wide groups of children in purchasing equipment. Some recent examples of this are: Purchase of two new water fountains; $5000 donated towards garden projects around the new F block; approved funding for a Sphero Educations coding device and support pack; funded the costs of a mural for the International Students who attend Darfield High School; and purchase of a fully

equipped BBQ trailer for the School. Each year, we also donate prizes for Senior prize giving, including the prize for Senior Dux. We welcome you all to the AGM. If you would like to know more information please email me - ptsa@ darfield.school.nz Rhonda Hamilton-Cross Chairperson PTSA

Following the AGM, we will go into our monthly meeting. Coming up – Catering for the Malvern Show 23 March 2019; Ethel and Bethel Housie Evening – mid-May. The PTSA looks to fundraise by way of community involvement and running events that don’t impact on our busy lives, so most fundraising takes place in the evenings with the exception of the A & P shows. Darfield High School PTSA is selling Entertainment Books again this year. Click HERE to pre-order yours today. ISSUE 2 / DHS DISPATCH

STUDENT SUCCESSES Celebrating the successes of our students is important. There are a number of areas that students excel in. Whether this is part of or outside of the DHS community, please feel free to let us know, so we can celebrate their achievements with the whole community. Charlotte Thomas and Mikayla Wycliffe were selected for the Canterbury Dressage Team to compete at NZPCA Dressage Champs 2019.

They went on to win the overall National Team Championships for the second year in a row.

They travelled to Blenheim in midJanuary with their horses and competed in very hot windy conditions. Despite the hot weather, the whole Canterbury team produced very consistent results.

As well as this, Charlotte went on to win the Under 18 section individually and also the Pairs section for this age group.

OFF TO

FRANCE!

Issy Kennedy

Thanks to the Senior French exchange programme, these three lucky students are off to France on 17 March! Darfield High School runs a reciprocal exchange programme with its sister school, LycĂŠe Felix Le Dantec, in Brittany, France. This programme is a language immersion programme for senior students of French; this means that our students will get the chance to live nine weeks in France, hosted by a French family and attending the local High School.

4

Ethan Spence

On their return in May, our school will host French students who will also stay with us for two months. We are wishing Emily, Issy and Ethan all the best for this very exciting adventure!

Interschool Showjumping

(L to R) Lea Mildner, Alex Gerritsen and Clara Schmidt

The Interschool Showjumping event this year was well run and well supported with 25 teams representing schools around Canterbury. Darfield High School was represented by three teams. All the riders had an enjoyable day and represented the school superbly. The Darfield White team (Charlotte Thomas, Mackenzie Morgan, Hannah King and Ella van der Wilt) had the best result of the day, placing third overall. It was very close half-way through the day, and all of the riders performed well.

she was able not only to stay on, but also get over the second part of the double. The standard overall seems to get better and better every year and it was wonderful to see Darfield White in the prizegiving. Our showhunter riders had a superb day with Georgia Allison winning both height classes and Charlotte Thomas gaining a second.

As always, a big thank you to the Mums, Dads and Grandads who help on the day and ensure their riders are ready and looking polished!

The Darfield Maroon team (Georgia Allison, Katherine Hadler, Katie Doncliffe and Mikayla Wycliffe) finished 10th, and the Darfield Blue team (Georgia Mitchell, Summer Mitchell, Alex Gerritsen and Emma van der Wilt) finished 16th overall. Katherine Hadler gets the award for the day for stickability and determination after her horse tripped on the first jump in the double; with Katherine on his neck

2019 Deputy Head Prefects

Hey guys, I'm Kieran McKay, Deputy Head Boy for 2019. I'll be helping out around the school where I can and doing things like organising the chalk board, with my fellow deputy Kate, and running the Student Volunteer Army. If you have any ideas or stuff you want up on the board, feel free to come ask. Or see me about anything else you might wanna know. Thanks; see you around school.

An issue that this year's Student Wellbeing Committee identified is that the wealth of resources available at DHS and elsewhere - are being underutilised because many students don't know they exist, or don't know where to find them. As a way to fix this, we have created a website - it's called the 'Wellbeing Toolkit' and it's a place where students can access information about all of the support services and wellbeing resources available to them. At the moment, there are three main 6

sections. The 'DHS Support Services' section lists all the support services that we have here at Darfield, what they do, and how to access them. In the 'other support services' section, you'll find links to other places to go for help, with sections specific to mental health, physical health, LGBT+, problem solving, and more. There's also an extensive list of helplines, and tips for using them. Finally, there's a section with a heap of other online resources about maintaining your wellbeing. The site

By Blake O'Donnell, Tierlina Payne, Cedar Scott and Hamish Thornley

In Term 4, 2018, some of the Year 9 Social Studies classes participated in the Grow NZ Innovation Challenge. It is open to all Years 9 and 10 students across NZ and is a Social Studies, Science and Technology integrated inquiry. The idea is to engage students in problem solving within the Primary Sector. This was an introductory activity to prepare the students for their Dragon’s Den assessments later in the term. Students were put into groups of four and given at random one of fifteen primary sector problems to try and find an innovative solution for. Every term, the entries were judged by a panel in Wellington and one group was announced the winner. In Term 4, the winners were four Darfield High School students from 9NS – Hamish Thornley, Blake O’Donnell, Tierlina Payne and Cedar Scott. They each received a certificate and $60 Pressy Card Voucher. The group’s challenge was as follows: Optimal Weedkiller If not controlled, weeds grow freely causing weed infestations in cropped fields or pasture paddocks. Weeds can also harbour pests and be a fire risk. The optimal application of weedkiller has a significant impact on productivity… Your challenge is to come up with a solution to apply the right type of weedkiller at the right time, and to map efficiency of the application. Following are parts of their winning presentation… Andrea Jacobs

Geography Trip 2019 Geo trip 2019 started off with a bit of a bang with 16 tired and moody but excited Year 12 students arriving at school on a cold Sunday morning. The vans were then loaded up with 10 cheesecakes, 18 donuts, chicken and a box of eclairs; safe to say we all gained a few. Fast forward four hours of singing and eating, we arrive at our glorious destination, Aoraki Mt Cook. Our first mission was collecting data at the river down the road. After reminding us not to forget our Geo books, Mr Quinn forgot the tennis balls; therefore, five minutes later, oranges were floating down the river. The first night consisted of tyre racing, Miss Symons singing, and burlesque dancing. Safe to say the first day was a hit losing only one due to food poisoning.

that humans are the reason that the world is in trouble. To finish it all, we completed our two-hour hike up the Red Tarns track. At the top of our destination, we recorded on the scree slope, then Miss Symons gracefully nearly fell off the mountain whilst scree running. Overall, the Geo trip was a bang and a huge success and we would definitely recommend it to future students. Cheers Mr Quinn and Miss Symons for such an awesome trip! Annalise Selfe and Ella Roessink

The second day came around as quickly as the first ended, with a 7.00 am wake up. Our moods lifted when we arrived at the Mt Cook airport where we got a very brief safety briefing which consisted of “Don't jump out the plane." Sixteen then paranoid tennagers jumped into the planes and headed to the glacier. All was well as we all came back satisfied with the view and the hypothermia we received. Our moods then dropped as we realised we had to do a 10 km walk. As we all sat in the van and sulked, Mr Quinn lovingly gave us the opportunity to plant our sore legs in a cafĂŠ. This led to two movies which informed us ISSUE 2 / DHS DISPATCH

Maths at Camp Over the last few weeks, Year 9 Science, Social Studies, English and Maths classes have been working on a cross-curricular themed unit of work: Camp. In Maths, teachers have followed the interest areas of their students to teach a range of skills across multiple Mathematics strands. Some students have focused on reading compasses and their orienteering skills, while other classes have looked at different meal plans using probability trees. A couple of classes investigated perimeter, area and volume of shapes, which ultimately is what led to pitching tents on the back field. A number of students embraced getting outside and seeing the relevance of their learning in a fun and practical way. The students had to work in teams and problem solve. Although some tents were challenging to pitch, the students were fortunate enough to have help from Ms Kelly's Years 11 and 12 Soft Materials classes, who were doing a mini stock-take, and some fantastic Year 13 students who clearly had a lot of experience and were happy to share this with the Year 9 students. Students are away on camp this week and next, and the hope is that they take some of their learning from the different subjects and apply it in the camp situation. Carrie Whyte

"I joined the BBQ party that the international department organised. One of the purposes was promoting mutual relationship among the international students. Thanks to this party, I could achieve it. I played basketball. It's good to interact because sport is one way to communicate without language. The game was very exciting. Through this study abroad experience, I want to not only improve my English skills, but also make international relationships. So events like this are of great significance. Three months are really really short so I should make an effort. For these reasons, it was meaningful and useful time." Yuga Sakikawa

SELWYN SECONDARY SCHOOLS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

This year for the first time, the four secondary Schools in the Selwyn District (Darfield High, Ellesmere College, Lincoln High and Rolleston College) participated in the inaugural Selwyn Secondary Schools Athletic Championships. This event was open to all students from Years 9 to 13. It was held on Tuesday 26 February at the new athletics complex - Nga

Puna Wai – in Christchurch. The weather was fine and this made for a great athletics meeting.

Darfield High School entered over 60 keen students and all gave their best. We had a number of first placings, starting with wins in the Under 14 boys and girls 1500 metre races.

OPEN: The school Library is open all school hours including interval and lunchtime.

Although we did not win the trophy for the relay races, we can all be justifiably happy with our performances. It was an ideal opportunity to participate at Nga Puna Wai before the Canterbury Secondary Schools championships in midMarch. A big thank you to the parents and caregivers who came along and supported our students.

GREASE

11—14 June Student Vehicles Some senior students have a driver's licence and a vehicle that they drive to DHS each day. There are some simple responsibilities that go with that ability. Parking in the school car parks during the day is reserved for staff. Students may park on the street, ensuring that they are obeying the road rules relating to parking. Usually, parking in Avoca Place becomes high demand, and we ask that students do not clutter up the space in this cul de sac. They should show consideration for the residents of this street by not parking too close to driveway culverts and ensuring that the rubbish trucks can get around the street to collect and empty bins on Thursdays.

Students should not be going back and forth to their cars during the day. Once at school, there should be no need to return to the car until the end of the school day. If a student holds a restricted licence, they must ensure they adhere to the requirements of this licence in relation to passengers. If a student holds a full licence and is bringing passengers to and from school, then they must have permission to transport those passengers from their parents/caregivers.

Finally, like all good drivers, students need to be very watchful around the bus bay and school gate as students flood into and out of school. They should expect the unexpected and keep speed to a minimum to ensure the safety of all.

Darfield High School 2019 Ski Programme The DHS ski programme will be advertised around 1 May and applications will close on close 31 May. Registrations are limited to 100 students who have fully paid for the programme. If 100 students have registered before 31 May, it will be closed at that point. The ski programme is open to all students who attend Darfield High School. Enquiries to Gavin Chalk, gc@darfield.school.nz

Free Dental Care for Children including special information regarding Year 8 students One of our Community Dental Service preventive mobiles will be visiting your school soon. 

We will be aiming to see that all school age children enrolled with the Community Dental Service have their dental check-up in the dental mobile while it is there

Year 8 students: all year 8 students enrolled with the Community Dental Service are transferred from the Community Dental Service to a FREE private dentist from year 9 until their 18th birthday. To help with this transition please ensure you have informed your child of their family dentist (not orthodontist). This will enable us to transfer your child onto the correct dentist for year 9 onwards. More information will be sent home after their year 8 check-up.

To do this we will be asking the school to provide your child’s name, address and your contact information.

The dental therapist will not only be checking the children’s teeth but will also Xray, clean, and apply protective treatments fluoride and or Fissure sealants (coating put on teeth to prevent decay) if required

If your child requires further dental care such as fillings they will bring home a ‘Care Plan’ which will explain what dental care and appointment times are required

When you receive the ‘Care Plan’ please contact our Call Centre as soon as possible as you will need to arrange a time to bring your child to one of our Community Clinics for this dental care

Please let us know ASAP if you do not wish your child to have any of this care, you can talk to the staff in the mobile or phone/email our Call Centre

If you wish to be present at your child’s check up this will need to take place at our community clinic so please phone/email our Call Centre to make an appointment

Please contact our Call Centre if you want further information on the Community Dental Service, to enrol your child or if you have any specific questions about your child’s dental care (a dental therapist will call you back)

Reporting Absences/Sick Students Please let us know if your student is going to be absent. To report an absence, telephone and leave a message, or email absences@darfield.school.nz Emails sent to other addresses may not be cleared before a text message is sent to you. Lost Property There is a large number of unclaimed items from last year. Please can you get your students to come and take a look if they know something has been misplaced. Parents: you are most welcome to come and check the clothing and items at Student Administration. If you have items that do not belong to you, please can they be returned to the Student Administration Office. Contact Details It is important that we have your correct contact details; please let us know of any changes. Parking Outside the School Outside the school on McLaughlins Road, is a no stopping zone. We need parents to observe the ‘No Parking or Stopping Zone’ between the School’s front gate and bus bay. To keep students safe, we need this area clear before and after school. There are signs indicating the restrictions. Opposite Darfield High School on McLaughlins Road, car parks are marked out and broken yellow lines are painted outside residents' driveways. Please ensure you park within the allocated car parks and not in front of residents’ driveways. The car parks outside the school hall are reserved for staff and visitors coming into the school. Your co-operation in this matter is appreciated. There is usually plenty of space around the bend towards Bangor Road, or south-west on McLaughlins Road.
