Principal’s Comments In assembly this week I spoke about the key role that our senior students have in being role models and through this building a supportive school culture. I continue to be impressed with our senior student’s willingness and enthusiasm to be leaders in our school. In the last two weeks I have been aware of students taking leadership roles that included: organizing the Formal; promoting Pride week; making a video to take a stand against racism; running rehearsals for Show Quest; organizing sports teams; directing drama productions and promoting road safety at the school crossing. Through this work they make positive differences to our school culture and also learn valuable skills.
Over two professional development sessions teachers have spent time considering building effective learning relationships with students through restorative practice. The Restorative Practice model aims to build and maintain positive, respectful learning relationships across the school community. By building and maintaining positive, respectful relationships within a school, staff to staff, staff to student and student to student, issues are more easily managed. What we aim to achieve is: • a positive school environment with more time for teaching • an increase in the engagement and learning of students in the classroom • growth in relationship and problem-solving skills, both for adults and students • a consistent approach that aligns with the school’s shared values
It is also worth acknowledging the staff that work alongside these leaders to support them to be successful with their various endeavours.

It has been an extraordinary term in many ways. From the national move into lockdown, to distance learning, Level 3 and Level 2 school, and the slog toward the end of term. We have all been challenged in a range of unexpected ways. We are looking forward to the term break and a chance to recharge and refocus.

Student Successes Celebrating the successes of our students is important. There are a number of areas that students excel in. Whether this is part of or outside of the DHS community, please feel free to let us know, so we can celebrate their achievements with the whole community.
As a Year 12 and a part of our school’s Students Against Dangerous Driving (SADD) committee, I had the opportunity to apply for the National Leadership Programme (NLP) this year. The NLP is a small group of students from all around New Zealand who are chosen to make a difference by influencing young road user behaviours. We have the opportunity to build our leadership and networking skills and work with likeminded youth while representing SADD at a national level. This is a two-year programme, that goes through Years 12 and 13. To achieve this position, I had to go through an application process and once this was over I had to wait for the news. Luckily it was good! The next step will take place during the October holidays. The leaders chosen will meet up somewhere in New Zealand to learn about how we can help in our schools and ‘lead the movement’. Thank you to Mrs Clark who was my referee and I hope to make a positive difference in our school over the next 18 months! Issy Kennedy

What is Pride Week about at DHS? It is about supporting all rainbow young people to have a sense of belonging in our school and community. We want students to be able to be themselves and accepted for who they are. If you find out someone is gay, bisexual. transgender, remember it doesn't change who they are as a person. Sometimes people feel afraid to be themselves because they don't feel they will be accepted. Everyone is happier when they feel accepted so please don't put people down or be homophobic. Be kind. A month ago a new group formed to support rainbow youth in our school – it meets once a week and students can come along to seek support, meet like-minded people, learn how to support friends or family, or because you are passionate about human rights and equality. If you would like to join this group you need to email Ms Mallinder or Ms Duckworth. There are pamphlets in the library. Mufti Day is Friday 3 July to celebrate and support Pride Week. It's theme is 'Come as who you are' but we also encourage you to wear bright and colourful colours in support of the LGBTQ+ community.

Outdoor Education Tramps
Year 12 Outdoor Education had a three day tramp in Craigieburn Forest Park. We covered three assessments, experience day tramping, experience camping, and navigate in good visibility on land, for a total of nine NCEA credits. The group started at the Environmental Education Centre on the Broken River ski road and finished at Castle Hill Village. It was a mix of following trails and navigating off track. It was a great time all round, with surprisingly good weather, only a small amount of drizzle and cold nights. The camp fires kept us warm in the evenings! Unfortunately the Year 11 Outdoor Education overnight tramp to Woolshed Creek Hut was cancelled due to a terrible, snowy forecast. We are looking at dates to reschedule it for later in the year if possible. Michael Power

Sheilah Winn This year our entry into the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare festival was a 15 minute piece from the opening act of Othello performed by a group of Year 13 students and directed by Mrs. Hanson. Rather than performing live in the competition, the submission was made through film. The performance follows Iago as he manipulates Othello into believing his wife is being unfaithful with his newly appointed Lieutenant, Cassio.
Cast: Othello: Jordan Rugg Iago: James Stead Roderigo: Isabel Simcox Cassio: Matt Young Brabantio: Emily McCallum Desdemona: Jess Galletly Duke of Venice: Ethan Spence
On Wednesday 24 June, the Year 10 Drama class performed their class play "Spilt Milk" for an invited audience from the Year 7 classes and the learning centre. For many students, this was the first time they had performed in front of a live audience, and they did a fantastic job! The play revolves around a bunch of characters living inside a script who have been washed away from the dialogue and into the margin where all of the quirky directors notes are.

The Darfield High School
Burger Competition The first of our burger competitions was held last week with our Year 10 Students. The judges were SO impressed with the burgers that we had some tied results. The burgers really nailed the brief. 1st Equal:
Emma 2nd Equal Kirsty and Megan
Kiara and Jess Lilly and Esther
Emma's was highly creative in its presentation, great use of colour. It was a really tasty burger and was a fantastic response to her research on Middle Eastern food. The sauce she made was delicious! Kirsty and Megan's American burger was incredibly creative, they showed innovation and technical prowess in getting the macaroni cheese to stack successfully. It was tasty, original, the big flag also gave it visual impact! Their burger sauce was also fantastic. Kiara and Jess's chicken burgers were absolutely delicious; displaying a wonderful balance of flavours. Lilly and Esther's burger was simply delicious! They used feta and a little spinach in the burger itself and this gave the burger loads of flavour.
Year 10 Students (L to R): Louis Ridgen, Lucas Hickey and Sam McCallion
There were lots of other delicious burgers too, it was very tough as I know so many of you put so much effort into the competition. Thank you to our student leader Emily White and Ms Kingsland for judging the competition.
During our exam study we worked on the process of meiosis. Mrs Wilson decided to spice things up with a competition with a block of chocolate on the line. There were posters, stop motion videos, power points and even a funny dance video. But in the end there could only be one winner and that was Emily and Issy’s informative poster followed by the dance video on meiosis.

Thursday 18 June, Y13 Geography and Tourism headed down to Queenstown with Mr Quinn and Miss Peterson. The six-hour drive consisted of snow, singing, and snacking, with a side of Lil P rapping. Arriving in the town of Q, we were warmly welcomed into our accommodation, The Christian Camp.
Queenstown Geography Trip
The first night saw the start of the team competitions. We had Masterchef: nachos, pies, pasta, and pancakes. First place was the girl’s team - The Remarkables (who also won the baking competition with a rich Nutella and Ferrero Rocher cake). Best team, The Gugs, represented by Ben & Rozlyn executed the best handshake and Cam won the True or False. The next day we were woken early by Mr Quinn, to attend a 9 am speaker at the Queenstown Resort College. Then it was time to go luging. We made our way to the gondola to luge where Monique fell off and slid into the side (she is fine and thriving!). The rest of our afternoon was free time where a few of us went to the Fear Factory (see picture below, to see how it turned out). Saturday morning consisted of salmon bagels and up & go’s until it was time to hit the vans again and head into town. Our task was to collect data, so whilst we kept warm in Starbucks with hot drinks, we counted the people walking past. Once this task was finished we spent the remainder of the day exploring and shopping before a game of laser tag (Mr Quinn lost). That evening, we dined out at ‘White + Wongs’ where we ate some gorgeous crumbed chicken. We got home and had a quiz night even though everyone was exhausted. The overall winners, The Remarkables, were announced and make it to the Hall of Fame in F Block! Sunday morning saw moody teenagers cleaning up before jumping in the van and being quiet for the first time throughout the whole trip. Overall a great few days and would definitely recommend for future Geography and Tourism students. A big thank you to Mr Quinn and Miss Peterson for making this trip possible. INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES WEEK
Last week was International Languages Week. This was a week full of fun activities that our awesome language and culture team set up.
Cultural Diversity Day
This year we tried new things for International Week. We created a phrase game that ran all the way through the week. This was a challenge where students were challenged to find teachers who held flags from different countries and speak the phrases to them in that language. This was a challenge which many students participated in and it was great fun to see everyone enjoying it and trying new languages. We also had Cultural Diversity Day on Wednesday, this ran during lunchtime so students could come and have fun. We had many stalls which were representing all the different cultures we have at Darfield High School. Students turned up to play games from each culture and learn interesting things about each culture. We had our passport challenge going as usual, which involved students doing a challenge from each culture and getting their passport stamped. There was lots of fun doing this and many students participated. This year we provided students and teachers with the opportunity to have curry or sushi for lunch on Friday. We asked the local Darfield curry shop Satkaar and C+C Sushi Cafe if they would be willing to help us. This was a great idea as we made over $900 for local businesses. We had really good feedback from all students who ordered curry and sushi. This was a challenging thing to organize but it was a great way to finish the week! We hope this year’s International Language Week was fun for you all and we hope you look forward to it again next year. Rira Takahashi and Niamh Guy ISSUE 6 / DHS DISPATCH

Cultural Diversity Day On Wednesday the 24th of June, Cultural Diversity Day was run by international students and cultural ambassadors at lunch time in the hall. Mrs Hayakawa helped us to organise it. There were Chinese, Japanese, German, France and Korean stalls to introduce their cultures to kiwi students. We made quizzes and games for them to enjoy learning about the cultures. My friends Emily and Brie and I introduced Korean culture through a traditional game we made called Ddakji. This game uses folded paper tiles and players need to throw a tile at another tile on the table and make the one on the table flip over. Many students came and played the game. I hope they enjoyed it and understood what the Korean traditional game is like even though it was very difficult to flip it over. Many students came to the hall, even though it was held only at lunch time. I was happy to see that they enjoyed Cultural Diversity Day. Kanon Oka
Nelson / Abel Tasman Trip I went to Kaikoura and Nelson for an international trip with the DHS international students. First day, we went to Kaikoura by bus. It was a long way and I was so tired. I could see seals sitting on the rocks. They were so cute and there were many baby seals. Then we had fish & chips for dinner. It was so nice and delicious. The next day, we went to Nelson. We walked in the Abel Tasman National Park for about 3 hours. It was so hard but I could see beautiful scenery from top of the hills and heard sounds of the sea. I felt like I was looking at the ocean in Hawaii. After that, we did kayaking on the sea for two hours. I almost didn't paddle, because it is hard and I didn't progress at all. So I left it to my friend Ran! When we paddled the kayak, the young seals followed us. I was a little bit scared, because I have never seen seals so close, but I was excited. I really enjoyed this trip. I was glad to visit many places and could do a lot of activities. I will never forget this trip. I felt I could be friendly with all of the international students. Thank you. Momoka Nagamine 14

Watch Our Kite Making Instructional Video Kite Making Video Project Hello,we are Darfield High School international students. We were invited by Selwyn District Council to help them prepare activities for children in the community to do at home in the next school holidays. We made videos about how to make kites, which the children will fly during the Matariki festival. At first, we made two groups and researched how to make simple kites. Using compostable and recyclable materials was important for sustainability. Next, we took some videos of us making kites. We introduced how to make them in the video. After that, we edited these videos on our own computers. For example, we added subtitles to the bottom of the videos, and also added some music to them. Music makes them more fun to watch. We had a really good experience thanks to Dave and Meredith, who helped us make the most of the opportunity. They are from Lincoln EnviroTown and supported the project. We appreciate Selwyn District Council and Lincoln Envirotown for giving us the chance to be part of the project. Taketo Butani
International Mid Winter Dinner Party Last Friday afternoon ten kiwi students along with the international students went to Smylies in Springfield for a mid-winter dinner. Usually, we would have it in the school hall but this year took a different approach. At the dinner party, we were split into 5 teams and played a variety of games such as bingo which we did three rounds of. These were based on New Zealand towns, teachers and students from the school. The bingo games were a great way for many of the international students to learn more about New Zealand and school. Other activities included Kahoot, Charades and UNO. I especially enjoyed the dinner and more importantly getting to know a lot more of the international students whom I hadn’t interacted with before over dinner. The dinner was fabulous, it consisted of a variety of dishes and was topped off with lamingtons and kiwifruit for dessert. Afterwards, many of us got to chill out after a long week and sang along to familiar songs we knew. Those at Smylies worked super hard to give the international and kiwi students the best experience and I’m sure others and myself included had the best time. It was a great way to end the school week and I recommend it to anyone thinking about going to the international midwinter party next year. I want to say a huge thanks to everyone that made this dinner possible: Miss Hely, Mrs Derik, Mrs Staddon, Mrs Hayakawa, Hannah Cossey and Smylies for such a splendid time! Emily Cullen

In our book we had to write about the emotions and feelings that the characters felt as if we were them. We also had to add illustrations to support the writing on the pages. Our Writing Topic this term in 7IC has been Character Descriptions. We hope you enjoy reading these ones about some of our favourite people. Grandad AKA Cowboy Hutchy He wore a brownish greenish hat that hid a smooth bald patch on the back of his head. When he “walked” it was more of an energetic penguin waddling than anything else and when he stopped,
he stood on a bit of a lean. He had a so called beard that wasn't really a beard so the moustache had to make up for it. His smile was kind but his teeth weren't the greatest. He usually wore his orange and white jacket and a white t-shirt. When he washed his mint green work truck all you could hear is “This is useless!” If he wasn’t saying that he would be roaring his lionly loud laugh. You could always hear his earpiercing whistle that sliced through
the sky like it was sponge cake. Grandad roped steers as his main event at Rodeo’s. He taught my dad, uncles and aunties how to rope. He had two horses that I knew of, Billy and Turbo. You would often see him pulling up the driveway with a smile on his face and Oakie, his scruffy little dog, in the passenger seat next to him. He is Cowboy Hutchy. The best Grandfather in the world. Danika Fuller
An extract from Cameron Carney’s Character Description He's the standard textbook nerd, you know the one, scruffy, blonde, green eyes, etc. With his reading glasses and small nose that’s constantly running like a tap. Quite plain and casual but get to know him and he's more than just a figure in the crowd. A small fellow with a tremendous personality that breaks through his seemingly impossible shell. As the ant in the world of giants he needs to look up at everything, making him the most positive person I know. Like his personality he never gets old and I never get tired of having him around. He’s a complicated fellow but still smart and independent and a person I can truly trust. Loyal as a dog, he follows his friends everywhere entertaining and enjoying every moment with them. He is calm and collective and knows every little thing about everyone in his close friend group, that he likes to call home.
The task for 7IC was to write a letter to the Year 6s at their previous primary school about what life is like at DHS. Here’s what some of the students wrote: Dear Students, Hi Guys! It's Kaia, most of you know me as the funny chatterbox that used to be in your class. Now I have moved onto high school I have decided it is probably time to change my behaviour and that is exactly what I did. I hope you all have had a great year so far. As most of you will know I have moved on to intermediate at Darfield High School. I know that you all want to stay with your friends, but trust me change can be good and I think each and every one of you will love Darfield! First of all it is very well set up, in 7IC everyone gets their own desk and tray to store their books and computer. Which you will need to keep extra organised. You also get to do lots of fun activities like; French, Japanese, Food Tech, Soft Materials, Technology and more. My favourite so far was probably cooking. We made spaghetti bolognese, biscuits, muesli bars and toasties. Most of the teachers and students at Darfield are very nice, and will always make you feel welcome. Darfield High School is great for people who love sports, there are all kinds of sports tournaments and fun activities for you to try out. If you like leadership roles you can also sign up for class councillor like I did, and I actually got the role! That just shows you that at Darfield High School you can always have a chance, and step out of your comfort zone. My two favourite things at Darfield are definitely Show Quest and the canteen. Show Quest is a fun and enjoyable show for anyone in the school to join. It is a dance and acting show that competes against other schools. The canteen is a place where you can buy food for your lunch or morning tea. There are all kinds of food from cheesy garlic bread to hot chocolate.
Dear Students, Today I am writing to tell you about Darfield High School and how much fun I am having. DHS is exciting, fun and full of opportunities. The work may be harder but the teachers are always there to try and help you. I can guarantee you will find it fun. Some of the activities I have enjoyed are Food Technology, DTG and Languages. It might seem as though there are a lot of classrooms around the school but I have managed fine getting to the classroom I’m supposed to be in. There is a massive range of things that you will be able to do, from sports to cultural activities. The playground is heaps better than primary school with about ten times more things to do. My advice to you is to be respectful, helpful, hardworking and trustworthy and you will go a long way. On the whole I really enjoy Darfield High School. I hope that this letter is helpful to you and that you will enjoy DHS as much as I do. Yours sincerely Josh Tuer Dear Year 6, I thought I would write to you as I bet some of you are looking forward to coming to Darfield High School and some of you, maybe not so much. But don’t worry about it, it isn't scary. The kids here will look after you just like you're looking after years 1-5 at your school. It is a lot of fun at High School. So far this year I have made an animation in DTG and baked biscuits and spaghetti bolognese in Food Tech. There are many sports that you can join like rugby, football, tennis and more. The teachers here are just awesome and very helpful and friendly.
High school can be pretty scary when you first start, but to be honest, it is actually really fun! I hope to see some of you awesome West Melton students next year, and if you ever need any help you can always come to me!
I hope I have made you feel more comfortable about coming to Darfield High School next year. Have a great rest of the year. See you soon and please say hi to your lovely teachers from me.
