Principal’s Comments I have been Principal of Darfield High School since the start of 2009. In the last twelve years, the school has been a significant part of my life and the life of my family. Leaving the job was never going to be an easy decision to make. It seems to me that if you do not have regrets then you have not taken risks, made mistakes and learned along the way. I have learned so much. I am sorry that that I won’t be leading the exciting developments ahead for the school; however, I look forward to continuing my involvement as a parent and friend. There has been plenty of change over the last decade but it seems as if our community, and the school along with it, has faced its share of big challenges: the Darfield earthquake, the Christchurch earthquake, floods and snow events, the Mosque attacks and COVID-19. Throughout these challenges, we have worked together. Our community does well in a crisis.

Education by its nature is about developing people’s skills and attitudes, and their knowledge and wisdom. Whilst we can get a glimpse of our success with these things through NCEA results and seeing the citizens our students go on to be, it is the more tangible things that remind me of how we have developed. It can be the obvious things such as developments of new and refurbished buildings and facilities. It can be small things such as the bench seats in front of H2 which I made from a beech tree that once stood next to the Oak in the quad. Other developments, such as the school House competition reintroduced with new names in 2010, have become an important part of building belonging of our students. Ultimately though, it is seeing our children grow into fine young adults that is most rewarding. I have had the privilege of travelling with students to Japan, China and New Caledonia, as well as representing the school in the USA, Germany and Australia. It is these
trips, plus the many activities such as Mud Run, Talent Quest, camps, music and sports, that stand out in my memory. The greatest satisfaction as Principal has come from working with individuals and groups of staff, students and wider community to make positive changes. This has included the BOT, senior leadership team, school committees, PTSA, student council, Malvern Principals and many others. Their commitment to our students, school and community is outstanding. Over my time as Principal, I have become very attached to the place and its people. DHS has become part of my identity. I thank you for also sharing part of your life with me. The legacy I hope to have left is of the students who have passed through the school and taken with them the knowledge and wisdom to be good people. James Morris

I am sorry to announce that the Principal, James Morris, has submitted his resignation in order to pursue other opportunities in education and management. His resignation will be effective from the end of Term 4. James has expressed his gratitude to the Board, the senior leadership team, the staff, the students and their families/whanau/caregivers for all the support he has received during his time at Darfield High School. James has led the recent visioning process and has concluded that now ISSUE 8 / DHS DISPATCH
There will be an opportunity to farewell and acknowledge James’s service once we are able to gather as a whole school community. Trevor McIntyre has been appointed Acting Principal. He offers vast experience in educational leadership, and is well known and respected for his role as Principal of Christchurch Boys’ High School. He continues to work in the education sector in his role as BOT trustee of Haeata College and in his work in the rural sector with Young Farmers NZ. Mr McIntyre is passionate about supporting the all-round development of our young people and growing thriving teams. He begins at school on Monday 7 September.
Mr Morris will be on leave but supporting the work of the leadership team. We are now beginning the process for the recruitment of a Principal for Darfield High School. The LSM, Mrs Gillian Simpson, will continue in the statutory management role of the employment of the Principal, staffing and communications and will work with the Board and the Leadership Team to support them through this transition. Now more than ever we need to work closely as a community for the good of our young people. Readers' Cup Competition
Congratulations to Jacinta, James, Maurine and Carmelyn who competed in the Canterbury Readers' Cup at Turanga (Christchurch's Main Public Library). This was the first time DHS have entered a team. We attended the opening of The Creators Room Exhibition at The Welder. Year 13 student Hayley Murray, is exhibiting two of her artworks. Originally the opening was 28 August but, due to Covid, the opening for family and teachers was brought forward and ran over two nights. The exhibition is on til 10 September.

ShowQuest On 14 August, the ShowQuest cast and crew arrived at school to finally perform and film the hard work that they have done. This year, because of lockdown, ShowQuest was turned into ‘ShowQuest on Screen’. This still gave schools the opportunity to showcase the creative stories and performances they had created, but made into a cinematic type video. Our theme this year is What Comes After, following the story of a victim of domestic violence on their journey to recovery. Film day consisted of multiple takes of each dance to get the shots we wanted. It was a long day of focus and fun. Jordan Rugg, our cameraman and editor, is now hard at work piecing together the final product ready to be sent off to be judged. I would like to congratulate the following cast members for their fantastic work over the past three terms: Blakely Bruce-Sheppard, Maddison Caffell, Kaia Davis, Aimee Fleet, Lilly Gilbertson, Sophie Howe, Chloe Kilday, Lizzy Marvin, Mya McDonnell, Cerys McGuinniety, Liam Morris, Sophie Palmer, Margo Pattie, Lucia Tully, Kezia Sutton and Laura Wason. I would also like to recognise the hard work of our choreographers: Caitlin Knowles, Lily Payton, Katie Molloy and me, and the help we had from Emily McCallum with storyboarding the idea. I would also like to thank Ms Blakemore for her constant help and support throughout the process of ShowQuest; we could not have done it with her. The support crew we had on the day were also amazing: Isabel Simcox, Mrs Dalley, Hannah Cossey, Lily Payton and Katie Molloy. A special mention to Blakely Bruce-Sheppard, who was our lovely lead this year. She performed the character of the victim and did it with such grace. Placing first overall in the Interschools Eventing team competition in my last year at DHS will definitely be added to the highlights of my school experience. Waking up at 5.30 am was definitely not ideal; however, it was all worth it at the end of the day. I loved being a part of such a strong and talented team of riders. Everyone put in their very best effort on the weekend and were so supportive of one another. It's amazing to see how Darfield has become increasingly competitive at these interschool equestrian competitions, and to see how the riders have improved over the years. We are lucky to have Miss Voss as a dedicated manager, as well as plenty of parent support. After such a good weekend, I'm looking forward to competing for the school again in the Interschools Dressage competition next month. Caitlin Rayne

Te Kāhui Whetū o Waihora On Wednesday 26 August, the Darfield High School Kapa Haka group travelled to Rolleston College to take part in the combined Selwyn Schools Kapa Haka Group: Te Kāhui Whetū o Waihora. The schools include Lincoln, Rolleston, Ellesmere and us.

We spent the whole day learning new songs and haka that we will sing together at the Pō Whakangahau competition. This event was made possible because of the efforts of Ms Blakemore, Mr Forward, Mrs Gander and Whaea Niki. We had lots of fun at Rolly Colly learning how to sing in Te Reo Maori. The 2020 Shave for a Cure event was held on 28 August, with 36 students either shaving their hair off or cutting off 15+ cm. We had six weeks for fundraising, including two sausage sizzles, and on Shave Day we had a Crazy Hair Day and a Mufti Day to wear as much orange, red and yellow as you could. This year, our team and school were able to raise over $14,000, all of which goes to the Shave for a Cure foundation, supporting Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. This year was also very special as we also had George Brown (former head boy of DHS) shave off his long luscious hair with teacher, Mr Finnigan. They’ve both been growing out their hair for the last three plus years!

Ōhau and Mt Dobson Ski Trip Report

From 21 to 23 August, we joined a Smylies Tours ski trip with some of the international students from Darfield High School, Miss Hely, and one international student who came from Hillmorton High School. This was a really small group of just five students and two supervisors.

On Friday after school, we gathered together and headed to Smylies to pick up our ski gear before we went to Twizel. We ate fish and chips for dinner in the park in Geraldine. It was very nice and I think it is better than Darfield fish and chips. After that, we arrived at the motel in Twizel that I came to last year too, and I could sleep well.

On Saturday, we left our accommodation at 8.20 am and drove towards the Ōhau ski field. On the way, we could see a beautiful view from the van. Some of us hiked up to the top with our skis. It was very hard but we could see an awesome view from there. At lunchtime, we made sausages that were really good. We enjoyed the views some more: Lake Ōhau was bright blue and beautiful. After skiing, we went back to the motel and played card games, watched movies, talked, and had lasagne with salad for dinner.

On Sunday, we left our accommodation at 8.15 am and headed towards Mt Dobson. The ski field was bigger than Ōhau. There were many trails and it had a chairlift and T-bar, etc. The snow was better and we had a very nice time there. We all really liked Mt Dobson. This trip was a really good chance to rest from school life. We got to know each other more and had good conversations with the supervisors. Niki from Burnt in Time was passing through our classroom and noticed that we were learning about Craft as part of our South Pacific Education Courses (SPEC) work. She shared with us photos and samples of her work and offered to come into our class to teach us how to create our own wooden clocks. We planned our clock designs by choosing a clock face. Some of us chose numbers and some chose Roman numerals. Then we selected an image that reflects our personal interests. For example, we have images of fish, flowers, cats and car logos.
LEARNING A New Craft
We cut out our templates and put them on a square of wood with carbon paper underneath and traced the design onto the wood. We learned that it is very important to use only untreated wood so that there are no chemicals that can harm us when we burn into the wood.
Niki came into the class and showed us how to do pyrography using a Burnmaster, which is like using a hot poker. We all took turns at burning our designs onto our clock faces. Niki made sure we were safe and not burning ourselves. She has also taught us different techniques for using the machine. The next step will be to cut out holes in the back of the clock mechanism. Then we will paint over our clocks with a redwood polyurethane varnish.

We are feeling proud of what we have done so far and enthusiastic about what our finished clocks will look like. We are really thankful that Niki has been able to offer her time and resources to teach us a new craft. Learning Centre

I have said for a number of years that it would be great to go back to school as there are far more opportunities that are available now than in my day. I just didn't think it would be in the capacity of a Sports Co-ordinator. Six weeks into my new role and I have to say the initiation has been full throttle, but extremely enjoyable. I attended the Years 9 and 10 Quad Tournament hosted by Ellesmere College in Week 4. This was my first school event and it was a pleasure to witness the great teamwork and sportsmanship of the players. The teams played hard and fair, with a lot of determination, and we were thrilled to retain the Shield for another year. Due to the Level 2 restrictions, some recent annual sporting events have been cancelled; however, we are lucky that most weekly town competitions are able to continue. Week 7 is Winter Tournament Week: we have the Senior Netball team competing in the Secondary Schools Netball Tournament in Christchurch, and the U15 Rugby Team competing in the Rural Livestock Tournament in Invercargill.
At the start of August, the Years 7 & 8 Darfield Dogs started playing in the Selwyn Primary Schools Competition, in the Second Division—Development Grade. The team is made up of nine Year 8s, most of whom had not played Basketball before joining this team. Our lone Year 7 student, Quinn McClimont, is our team captain and also our most experienced player; he plays for the Gators in Christchurch on Fridays and Saturdays. Here’s a look at the team’s results for their first three games: v Lemonwood Grove 9-9 v Lincoln Green 33-3 (Darfield win) v West Rolleston Warriors 20-8 (Darfield win) Due to these convincing wins, the Darfield Dogs were moved up to Division 1—Competitive Grade. Their first game in Division 1 was played on Monday, v Tai Tapu Magic 18-12 (Darfield win). So, we are approaching the halfway point of the competition and this team remains undefeated. “They have improved so much since their first game. They look to pass, they’re hungry on attack, make space and are not afraid to get hard on defence. Biggest attribute for them is teamwork, which is uniquely fantastic in basketball at this level, as usually someone wants to be on the ball all the time.” The team have been enjoying weekly training sessions with some very skilful and patient Year 13 basketball players: Ollie Sutherland, Ben Francis, Jesse Gray and Jesse Sutherland. Pip Deans got us some brand new balls and Mr Dickens sorted us out with a gear bag; they can’t wait for the new outside hoop to be installed.
We’ve also been very well supported at our games, with coaching from Cam McClimont and transport from a number of parents. Thank you all so much for giving up your time to support these young players. The boys are all enjoying the opportunity to play and they appreciate the time people are putting into them. Winter Tournament Week
Today the Senior Netball Team played in the finals of the Regional School Sport Canterbury Tournament at Cowles stadium. The Team were up against St Margaret's B, it was a great hard fought match, that could have gone either way at times, but St Margaret's came out on top with a 26-20 win. Great to see such good sportsmanship and team spirit, everyone contributed and played well throughout the tournament and the team won all their three pool games. A huge thank you to coach, Gemma Smith, Manager Georgie McKenzie, Umpire Maria Townsend and School Teacher Rep Nicole Reardon for supporting the team. The Rugby boys had another good win this morning against Gore 30 - 5. Five wins from five games, a fantastic effort. Thanks to Rex Smith and Sam Forward for their support of the team. Congratulations to Louis Ridgen for being named in the Tournament Team.

Successful Quad Sports Years 9 and 10
Middle Quad teams won the Quadrangular Competition hosted at Ellesmere College on 20 August. Final points as follows: DARFIELD on 24 points, followed by Mt Hutt 23 points and Geraldine 15 points and lastly Ellesmere College on 10 points. Congratulations to the netball team who were unbeaten. The rugby team had two wins and a draw. And the football team had two draws and a win. Special mention to Pip Deans for co-ordinating our teams. Also thank you to our coaches, Nicole Reardon - Netball, Rex Smith - Rugby and Peter Finnigan - Football.

20/21 SEASON Years 7 and 8 students keen to play cricket this summer can register directly with their local clubs. There is a great local competition with a lot of talented young players. See the list on the next page of the local clubs and links to their registration pages.
All current Years 9-13 students wanting to play cricket for Darfield High School can register with Darfield Cricket Club. As part of the registration process, you can select the team you'd like to play in.
Some of our Years 7 and 8 players have been part of a five-week invitational cricket development programme run by Canterbury Country Cricket. This is based at Lincoln Uni in the Cricket High Performance Centre. This is an excellent pre-season training opportunity that will aid their progress in the National Primary Schools Cup.
Our Years 9 and 10 DHS team is looking for new players. They play in the CCC Mid-Canterbury Super League against other local High Schools. We also have a First XI that is made up of our senior students (mainly Years 11-13). With enough interest, we could look at forming a 2nd XI. Cricket is a hugely popular sport in this district and we are so fortunate to have some wonderfully supportive local clubs. Don't hesitate - sign up now!

Digital Citizenship Site to be Aware of

In the past couple of weeks, a site has been brought to my attention: Discord - Chat for Gamers. Compared with the bright and friendly feeling of kid faves like Snapchat and Instagram, Discord mixes low-key design with high-tech features. Initially created for gamers to talk while they're playing, Discord has morphed into a place for anyone to explore their interests in subjectspecific groups. Like other social networks, Discord can be iffy or safe. But, because it allows any user to create both public and private groups, the risks for kids can be tiny or huge, depending on how they use it. Due partly to the popularity of games such as Fortnite, Discord grew quickly (it now has over 100 million users - fewer than Snapchat but a lot fewer than Instagram's 400 million). It's also had safety problems, including being at the centre of at least one serious crime against a teen and a human-trafficking ring. If they know where to look, teens can easily find mature content on its public channels. And its invite-only private servers also have become places where bad actors and even cybercriminals can come together to communicate. At the same time, for a more secure experience, teens can use the app without contacting anyone but their friends and avoid the unrestricted chat from other games and platforms. Remember that it’s not about removing these sites; it’s about knowing what your child is doing online, knowing their passwords and helping them to be safe online citizens. InsideOUT is a national organisation with the vision for all rainbow young people in Aotearoa New Zealand to have a sense of safety and belonging in their schools and communities. They do this through providing a range of information, resources, training and support to schools, workplaces, government agencies, organisations, community groups, whānau and individuals, as well as running a number of youth development programmes. Hororata Highland Games 2020 Student Volunteers Wanted The Hororata Highland Games committee are looking for student volunteers to help run the Have A Go arena at the next Highland Games, Saturday 7 November. This is helping people try tossing a caber and doing other Scottish activities. We make sure all volunteers are trained. Volunteers get entry to the event, a Clan Hororata tee shirt and lunch. We are also looking for someone to step up and be a team leader for the Kilted Mile, managing registrations and organising the race.
