THEATRICAL COLLONADE Location: Temple Place, London

The Theatrical Collonade occupies a city block at the heart of the London’s Embankment, prominent from both the riverfront and the Strand. It is surrounded by a number of historic listed buildings. The proposed elevation is composed of columns of varying heights, providing shading and making a visual link with materials found in this context. The dimensions of these components are derived from the columns in the facades of neighboring buildings. The map on the left represents the allocation of the columns and the height of each one. This ‘taxonomy’ of columns restores the vertical aesthetic and proportion to the site, characteristic of the existing buildings in the area.

The perspective Southside section is unraveling the spaces and gives the understanding of the depth of the overall structure. The West tower is incorporating the Scenography production office with the meeting room. The exhibition space acts a potential storage for the Lord’s Mayor Cabin as well as a display of the physical models created as a part of the stage set designing. Moving on from the exhibition the visitor will experience the cafe overlooking the south embankment. The cafe and exhibition space becomes a linking segment between two towers. The East Tower is integrating the rehearsal space and the parterre for the spectators with the control booth on the south side overlooking the River Thames.

AQUATIC SALUTE

Location: Blackfriars Embankment Pier The topic of the brief is based around the festive activity of Lord Mayor Show. The essence of festivals is to commemorate a certain tradition that unites generations. Taking Lord’s Mayor Show as a base we are proposing a new tradition that adds another layer to this annual procession. The original event is divided into two parts: river pageant and dry land parade. The Gloriana vessel, that carries The Lord Mayor, leads the river pageant. It seems not to participate in the overall procession to its greatest extent and does not fulfil its potential. In order to uncover Gloriana’s importance as the key element of the 800-year procession, we extend it’s participation to the land through our proposal. The core of our intervention is consisted out of three parts: the detachment, exchange and archival of the main element of the Gloriana vessel: the cabin According to our programme each Lord Mayor will be able to design his own cabin, that he will use for the duration of his term. Therefore, the cabin renewal happens every year. The sequence we propose creates history and preserves it by archiving cabins in the Boat Museum and keeping a record of the Lord Mayor show through paintings and booklets.

Stages of the cabin in the context of the Landing Jetty: 1. Arrival of the Gloriana to the Landing Jetty 2. Detachment of the cabin 3. Transportation of the cabin 4. Arrival of new cabin 5. Attachment of New cabin

The final design is still based on a modified and deconstructed rooms of the Mansion house therefore the dimentions of the landing platform for the Gloriana are taken from the standard structure of the Bout house. The rib structure in the final proposal is pointing at the void for the cabin on the ground floor plarform. The rotation of the rooms is not only folowing the views but also surround the cabin’s void and acts as a corridor for the cabin. The structure is overall created around the cabin detachment. The Publishing Hub entrance is looking out to the street and it is easy accesable from the Victoria Embankment. This space is allined with the ground for better engagement of the structure with public.

It acts as an information distributor between people and The Boat house. The aim of Urban Painting studio is to depict multiple manipulations with the cabin and generally record the Lord Mayor Show through paintings. The level of Urban Painting studio is above the level of embankment which allows to have slightly angled panoramic top view onto the Victoria Embankment and the cabin. The Aquatic’s painting studio panoramic view is rotated towards the Waterloo bridgr and the lowest to the river surface. The aim of this studio is to reproduce paintings of the moment of River peagent approaching headed by the Gloriana.

MOEBIUS SKATEPARK Location: 162 - 167 Shoreditch High street The Mobius Skatepark is located in a buzzing, vibrant hub of London - Shoreditch. This area has undergone a radical transformation in recent years. The burgeoning creative industries have also been a catalyst for a new generation of restaurants clubs and galleries. The Bamboo skateboard start-up company within the skatepark would merge into the urban fabric of the area due to the demand of space for skaters of the area. The skatepark’s structure originates from the geometry of a Mobius strip. The original Mobius strip consists of a square section but by manipulating the shape of the section new form can be done.

The modifications done with the sectional geometry cut are based on the curvature of the concrete bowl providing the perfect undulation of the inner space need for the skatepark. Skateboarding is a constant flow physically as well as mentally. The aim of the project was to provide a Shangri-La space in the busy area of London. The second component of the whole structure is a bamboo garden located inside the ring and supported by the hydroponic system. The skatepark and the bamboo garden are suspended above the ground. The third part of the project is a structure supporting the skatepark and accommodating the start-up company with the small skateboard production line and a shop.

GREEN LIBRARY

Location: Torrington Square, SOAS Library rooftop The Green Library is located on the rooftop of the SOAS university on the Torrington Square, London. The design emerges from the disadvantages of the SOAS library - lack of space during exam period, light is quite dark and warm, excess heating, lack of rooms needed for group meetings. The overall aim of the project is to create healthier and more relaxed environment for the students of the SOAS University. People do not consider working or studying space as space where you can grow and harvest crops. Symbiosis with nature creates mentally and physically healthier environment. The bamboo was considered as the most suitable plant for the central part of the structure due to the easily adaptable nature and low hydration requirements of the crop. The shape of the structure emerges from the natural growth of the bamboo roots. The particular type of bamboo with certain category of roots were selected which helped to make the organization of the core element.

The particular type of bamboo with a certain category of roots was selected which helped to make the organization of teh core element. The diagram above represents four possible configurations for the bamboo growth for 4, 8 and 12 bamboos planted. The distance between bamboo canes should be not less than one meter and the spread radius of bamboo roots depends on the type of bamboo. The twisting motion of the plan creates more private spaces for people to study and secures from the sides. The bamboo garden acts as a visual boundary between visitor and occupant, therefore, providing complete seclusion. The ground floor space extends to the mezzanine floor where the visitor can experience unusual angle of observation of bamboo forest.

FABRICATION LABORATORY FESTIVAL The main aim of the Fabrication Laboratory Festival was to design and built pavilion using only materials provided by Fabrication Laboratory Shop. Members of the festival were to work in a group of six people. The design was inspired by “God’s Eye” Pavilion assembled in Canada for International Design Competition. The twisting configuration of the project results in two entrances/exits enabling the visitor to progressively experience a protected space which celebrates the connection between the Earth and the Skies. Despite its scale, the structure manages to combine the elements of surprise and interaction thus further enhancing the overall experience of the user. The Pavilion was assembled out of white corrugated plastic. The whole structure consists of small units acting as bricks. One unit is two stripes of material slotted into each other, in order to achieve bending effect the strings were attached in the center of the unit along the stripe.

WATERLOO STATION SUPPORT STRUCTURE

During the work experience at Duggan Morris Architects practice, I modeled the existing support system for the Waterloo Station Train Tracks as a part of the early stage Competition. The three units were meant to be adapted to different facilities. The rigid repetition of arches in unit nine would be complemented by museum’s exhibits, the chaotic system of fire escapes and passageways of unit twelve would become suitable for the art gallery installations and the unit eleven would accommodate one of the facilities like gym, cinema or cafe due to its flexibility. The 3D model was done in Sketch Up from the existing plan.

ANDREW DOBSON ARCHITECTS While working at Andrew Dobson practice, I was involved in a redevelopment of a family house in Hackney Grove. One of the tasks on this project was cross-checking and updating the window schedule from sections and plans. This is an extract from an original file, representing window schedules I have altered.
