about

I am a newly graduated Architecture student at the Poznan University of Technology. Recent years have convinced me that, however unpredictable, time-consuming and full of extremes can this field be, it is also beautifully ambiguous, great and grateful. And although I was uneasy about this path, today I am convinced that I do not plan side paths or shortcuts. Recent years were time of study and work for me - both proffesional and non-work-related. During my master’s studies, I tried to combine it with professional work in several studios and at the City Hall of Poznań. At the same time, I was a student of architecture and English philology. To this day, languages are my passion, I am eager to learn new ones and polish those already known. I spent the last years in 3 configurations - in front of a laptop screen, in a radio studio as a speaker and with fantastic people, organizing TEDx conferences. These experience have taught me that I am persevering, organized and responsible. I enjoy both individual and group work. I love challenges.

conference center in Rome The master’s project’s location choice is the result of my deep amazement and interest in this city after having lived and studied there for half a year. A grand praise of heritage intertwined with the strive for giving the city a contemporary touch provides very unique grounds for architectural project. Despite the demanding topographic conditions, ancient Rome enraptures with geometric layout, squares and, of course, monumental architecture. The lion’s share of the original historic buildings of Rome is still enchanting. However, it is futile to look for contemporary architecture in the historic center. The urban tissue of the eternal city is so dense that new buildings are erected at most in distant districts or at the cost of demolishing the existing ones. Nevertheless, the town hall does not cease in its efforts to give Rome a modern layer. One of the urban plans is the Urban Project “Flaminio - Foro Italico”, established in 2005. On the premises of it many architectural competitions have been announced and one of them concerns the former Military Precision Electrical Components Factory. One third of this huge area located in the center of the Flaminio district served me as a project’s plot.

The idea behind the form is closely related to the function of the building and refers to communication between people. Rounded, buoyant shapes represent the dynamics of the relations - flowing, continuous and constant contact. The exchange of thoughts is possible only through openness and understanding - the wide roof is not only a source of shadow but also suggests an invitation to dialogue. Through the exchange of thoughts, people grow, just like the slowly rising solid. The multitude of curves, slopes and play of light praise the ambiguity.

residential tenement

Wilda’s contemporary urban tissue is very dense. Despite renovations, it is difficult to implement a novelty in such an environment. The architectural filling meets such dilemmas and was chosen as a main motive. It complements the emptiness, which, even for the architectural layman, is evident, suggests some loss and disturbs the perception of space.

Varying number of storeys of neighboring tenements caused ambiguity in assesing the new building’s height. According to the guidelines, it could not exceed five overground floors and was to refer to the line of the cornice of the higher building. However, it has not been specified whether it should refer to the line on the entire length of the façade. Initial sketches of the block ruled out the whole idea. Drawings of different heights made it possible to notice the strength of the solidification of the body and, thus, enabled a more dynamic drawing of the facade.

multifamily house

Sołacz is a small district of Poznań known for its charming Sołacki park. The corner plot at Drzymały / Nad Wierzbakiem street is currently a car park and a center of advertising solicitude. The development of the district comes mainly from the 70s - the uniform height, regular sequences of frontages and simple cubic blocks prevail in there. The designed building has a regular silhouette and equally predictable window sequences as neighbors. The proportions of the body also does not deviate from the neighborhood. Only small but expressive accents give it character. A gently protruding staircase with a brick thread in one building and a series of interwoven bends on the facade in a second block bring in dynamism and intrigue in an unobvious way. The division into two blocks makes the internal courtyard a more open, free space. The lack of buildings inside is intended to encourage potential designers of undeveloped space alongside to engage in dialogue and further efforts to open internal yards.

Centocelle park reinvention

Parco di Centocelle is a great of greenery in the north-east of Rome. Until a few decades ago, a military airport was located in this park, the only remaining part of which is the runway today. For many years, parks in Rome, with neglected greenery and a lack of arrangement, have been deterring its visitors. Therefore, many steps are being taken to change it. Parco di Centocelle is one of the largest parks in the Italian capital and, at the same time, the best communicated, which was the result of the recently opened new metro line. The idea was to create a park divided into zones with infrastructure adapted appropriately to the age and needs - for children, young people, families and seniors. The whole composition was snatched by a three-person project group, and my task was the central part, intended for families and children.

The study of different available pathways in the park provides information about the walkability withing the park, meaning it says how much time one can spend in a park on simple walking.

EXPERIENCE CURVE The experience curve allows for a raw judgment of the existing space. Centocelle Park makes good first impression (after entering the park zone) but disenchants respectively.

entering the park, noticing the panorama and rows of trees discovering vivid greenery, emotions prevailing: excitement, serendipity, calm spoiting guiding lines composed of the rows of trees and alleys wandering around and realising there is no more, experiencing disappointment

Numerous and detailed analyses were conducted and they formed the general idea about the design of the park. Above the entire plan for the park is presented. Freely flowing paths, undisturbed greenery and many little centers are the core assumption for the park. The bold part marks my scope of design.

family

center

The signifant part of the park is devoted to family activities. This part is isolated by greenery to make the acoustic and safety barrier. There are two playground for children (toddlers & school kids). It is closely knitted with the restaurant building so that the activities of fun and dining would be conjoined.

This part of the park is its heart. The main square (Ă˜ = 100m) is a cross for all the main paths and alleys. The center is not obvious, however, as it consists of an open-air thater, restaurants, a picnic area and, of course, the grand piazza. Thanks to such multitude of experiences available, the park never stays boring. 27

PLAYGROUND

28

PICNIC AREA

The playground area is ment to remain close to nature both in terms of design and materials used.

The picnic spot comprises of wooden panels, different in height and size.

■■ dense vegetation separates the playground ■■ colorful paths take part in the children’s play and energize the space ■■ wooden panels allow for truly natural experience and coexist with the surroundings

■■ parts of the wooden panels is used for as tables where people can bring their own food and enjoy the environment ■■ thanks to the shape the panels create a play of shadows during all day

OPEN-AIR THEATER One of the park’s main attractions. ■■ the theater’s auditorium is on the artifically created isle ■■ the audience can enjoy the event in an oustanding scenery, being surrounded by the greenery

SPINE - cafe interior

The idea was to create a universal cafe interior - so that it can be adapted to various spaces. In order to achieve this, I chose the most versatile shape - a rectangle. Universal seems simple, but that is not the case when it comes to arraning the space so that it assumes the possibility to be enterend from different sides. The interior was designed as universal but not devoid of character. Strong points, no symmetry, dynamics. These are the main features of the interior design of the cafe. Materials with good acoustic properties, including warm in the reception wood, intertwine here with the rawness of concrete and the cold of the resin floor. The whole spins the SPINE - a panel of wood wool carried out along the entire length of the ceiling.

TURNING WASTE INTO RESOURCE The bioublic toilet is a concept of fully self-sufficient public toilet in terms of resources demand. The automation of the sanitary devices allows for a thoroughly hygenic experience. Its dimentions don’t exlude the children or the handicapped from using. It’s comfortable also due to the space for the bags or other equipment the user is having. Exterior faucets make the water more accesible. Thanks to the construction it’s cheap and movale, if neccessary.

WATER SUPPLY The toilet re-uses both rain & gray water (for clean hands & for flushing, respectively). The funnel-shaped roof enhances the torrent to flow gently into the water container, where stored. The biogas pillow placed there does not disrupt the process as its spherical shape guide the flow in the target direction. Then, the water is distributed through pipes into the automatic faucets - both interor end exterior ones. Automatic faucets do not allow for water waste.

After turning rain water into gray water it gets stored in the gray water container. It is, again, re-used for flushing. The composting toilet uses only 10% (!) of the regular amount used for this process.

ENERGY SUPPLY

The energy needed for automatic touchless devices (soap/ paper dispenser, faucet and lighting) comes from the biogas pillow placed on the top. Biogas pillows can be a great and cheap marketing tool fo the biogas companies due to its volume. Such usage could also promote this alternative way of sourcing energy.

mariposa, the freeform

BOLD & FRAGILE Form, created as a result of manipulating the vertices of the cube, is a response to the command to create a bold and fragile body at the same time. Elevation of individual heights and uniform surfaces interrupted by openwork elements make the form light and enigmatic at the same time. Appropriately illuminated, both with artificial and solar light, creates an intriguing play of shadows. Among the functions for which this form may be applicable are: ■■ a gate displaying a view of a specific point or the whole panorama of the city ■■ a bike rack ■■ urban sculpture

I created this freeform during my 2nd year in architecture school. Not only did it remain my favorite piece of own art but also influenced all my further thinking of shaping architecture.
