In un test su un edificio di sette piani, interamente in legno, è stato riprodotto un sisma di magnitudo 7,2 sulla scala Richter (la stessa intensità di uno dei più distruttivi accaduti in Giappone); l’edificio non soltanto ha resistito alle sollecitazioni, ma dopo il test è risultato perfettamente agibile (vedi su youtube: progetto SOFIE). Anche le prove di resistenza al fuoco hanno dato risultati indiscutibili sulle strutture con pannelli x-lam. A d i f fe re n za di quanto accade con le pareti in mattoni o calcestruzzo, l’incendio si propaga molto più lentamente, rimanendo persino circoscritto alla stanza in cui ha avuto origine. Un edificio in legno, oltre a garantire prestazioni energetiche superiori ed un elevato comfort abitativo, garantisce una superiore sicurezza contro i sismi ed il fuoco.

Giovanni e Paolo con la chiesa in stile gotico, assurta a vero e proprio Pantheon ai tempi della Serenissima, che vi seppellì ben 25 Dogi. Ancora, il campo santa Margherita, uno dei luoghi più vivi della città, ricco di locali, sede dell’omonima chiesa fondata nel IX sec. e riedificata nel 1987. Venezia è anche la Biennale, per non parlare della celeberrima mostra del cinema, dei musei (Palazzo Ducale, Museo Correr, Torre dell’Orologio, Palazzo Fortuny, Museo del Vetro, Museo del Merletto, solo per citarne alcuni!) oggi organizzati in un unico sistema civico museale tra i più importanti in Europa: un solo biglietto per immergersi nell’arte e nella cultura veneziane. But Venice is much more. It is a floating city; it rests on poles immersed in the lagoon which have supported it for centuries. Time has stopped in the tiny streets (more than 300) that crisscross it. Naso in su, guardando intorno, sono visibili il Campanile di San Marco, l’Ala Napoleonica, la Torre dell’Orologio, il Palazzo Patriarcale e naturalmente la Chiesa di San Marco. Quella che fu la più grande potenza marinara nel XIII secolo si veste di fitti archi e monumentali edifici, testimoni di un periodo di eccezionale ricchezza artistica e culturale.

Originally conceived as a garden belonging to the nuns of St. Zachary with the Batario Rio channel going through it, the location where the monumental St Mark’s Square now stands was donated to the Doge, Giovanni Partecipazio I. Once in the centre of the square, you are surrounded by magnificently, articulated and evocative architecture, bordered by the Procuratie Vecchie and the Procuratie Nuove. Looking around, you see St. Mark’s Bell Tower, the Napoleonic Wing, the Clock Tower, the Patriarchal Palace and, of course, St. Mark’s Basilica. What was once the greatest naval power in the 13th century, it is clothed in thick arches and monumental buildings, witnesses to a period of great artistic and cultural wealth.

Under the sun, the golden mosaics embedded in the tripartite façade of the basilica of St. Mark sparkle, mingling with the general polychrome of the monument which takes shape through the thick rich bas-reliefs and chiaroscuro triple arches and columns. On the summit stands a forest of pinnacles and domes that develop into a decorated extension of lace and stone arches in the Byzantine tradition.

T The amplitude of St. Mark’s Square contrasts with the size of the surrounding streets, most narrow and therefore always in the shade during the day and lit by the glow from the windows which flank it, especially those of the local shops where they sell, and often produce, carnival clothes and masks; gaudy, sumptuous works of art which transform the small shops into art galleries. The light also comes from the many glass shops; there are plenty to suit all pockets and tastes. These also look like small museums; from sculptured vases by Venini, unmistakable for their sophistication and elegance, to affordable trinkets and small statuettes.

Città galleggiante, Venezia si è adattata sin dalle sue origini all’assenza di reti stradali. I vaporetti e le barche sostituiscono autobus e automobili e danno vita ad una viabilità del tutto diversa da quella cui siamo abituati. La velocità si ridimensiona, le distanze si percorrono nei tempi imposti dai mezzi acquatici. Prendendo il vaporetto per il tratto dalla stazione di Piazzale Roma a S. Marco si perde il senso del tempo, una sorta di benvenuto a chi arriva in città, cullati dal dondolio della barca e dallo sciabordio dell’acqua sotto lo scafo. Impossibile distrarsi tuttavia: a destra e a sinistra sorgono edifici sensazionali, dalle facciate affrescate o scolpite: quelli importanti hanno approdi privati, piccoli moli in legno proiettati sul canale, quelli comuni, invece, si raggiungono a piedi dalle diverse fermate del vaporetto, attraverso minuscole calli, roba da perdersi.

Alla sensazione di passeggiare in una città sospesa contribuisce il brusio costante che fa da sottofondo, mai fastidioso, sempre ovattato e leggero. E proprio Venezia, onirica e evanescente, da vita una volta l’anno ad un “fenomeno” unico, il carnevale. La fuga dalla realtà che nella città lagunare si percepisce quotidianamente, latente nella singolarità dell’organizzazione e nell’unicità dell’articolazione urbanistica, esplode e diventa tangibile, esplicito e istituzionale sistema di comportamenti e di stati d’animo. A carnevale per le calli e in piazza S. Marco sfilano maschere di tutti i tipi, diversissime tra loro, brillanti e colorate o nere e misteriose; tutte, però, hanno in comune il fatto di essere “maschere”: volti mono-espressivi, fissi che impediscono di guardare oltre.

As a floating city, Venice has adapted, since its origins, to the lack of roads. Water taxis and boats replace cars and buses to give an entirely different way life from what we are used to. Speed is re-dimentioned and distances travelled are conditioned by water transporation. Taking the boat from the station in Piazzale Roma to St. Mark’s means you lose all sense of time, a particular sort of welcome for visitors who are rocked by the swaying of the boat and the lapping of the water under the hull. However, you will not be easily distracted. To the right and left are sensational buildings with either painted or carved facades: the important ones have private docks or small wooden piers jutting into the canal, the ordinary ones, however, are within walking distance through tiny streets from different boat-stops.

T The feeling of walking in a floating city is reinforced by the constant, muted but never tiresome background buzzing noise of Venice. And Venice, dreamy and evanescent, gives rise once a year to a unique “phenomenon”: Carnival. The escape from reality we daily perceive in the lagoon city due to its unique urban planning explodes and becomes a tangible, explicit and institutional system of behaviour and moods. The carnival, through the streets and in St. Mark’s Square, sees a parade of masks of all types, ranging from bright and colourful to dark and mysterious. They all, however, have one thing in common: a “masked” mono-expressive face, fixed and impassive.

Ogni anno, in questo periodo, si percorrono le anguste calli sospesi nell’attesa che da un momento all’altro, da dietro l’angolo, faccia capolino una maschera, bella o terribile, divertente o inquietante. Come la Bauta, composta da un manto nero, il tabarro, un tricorno nero sul capo e una maschera bianca (larva). Un abito che in passato non era riservato solo al periodo del carnevale, ma a diverse occasioni. A Venezia, infatti, la maschera era quasi istituzionalizzata e ancora oggi, nei giorni di carnevale, è possibile sorprendere cittadini che si recano mascherati al lavoro.

A As you walk through the narrow floating streets, expect to see beautiful terrifying, funny or disturbing face masks peeping from behind any street corner. “The Bauta” with his black cloak, tricornered hat and white mask (larva) is always present. Masks were not just reserved for carnival but used for different occasions. In Venice, the mask was almost institutionalized and even today, during carnival, you can encounter people who go to work in disguise.

N Nascosti tra le viuzze o prospicienti piccoli canali stanno i bacari, le osterie tipiche di Venezia, dove usanza vuole che al banco o ad uno dei pochissimi tavolini si beva un’ombra e si mangi qualche cicheto giusto per stuzzicare l’appetito prima di pranzo o cena e per ciacolare (chiacchierare) vivacemente. È qui che i Veneziani fanno una pausa. Il bacaro è solitamente piccolo e accogliente, gestito da persone ospitali e simpatiche. Vi si respira un’atmosfera davvero singolare, gomito a gomito col vicino sconosciuto: uno dei tanti aspetti unici della città lagunare. Sorseggiando l’ombra (il bicchiere di vino bianco) si consumano assaggi veloci e saporitissimi, dal baccalà fritto, ai pomodori secchi sott’olio, olive e olivette, alle seppioline al forno ai crostini col baccalà mantecato, polpette, arancini, folpetti, nervetti con cipolla, fagioli e pure gli scampi fritti o mazzancolle infilate nello stuzzicadenti. Non può mancare, inoltre, la fetta di polenta, possibilmente con musetto o con un assaggio di sarde in saor. Da non perdere, inoltre, I risi e bisi, il fegato alla veneziana, il risotto nero con le seppie.

Hidden among the small streets or looking out over the canals are the Barcari, typical wine taverns of Venice, where custom dictates you whet your appetite before lunch or dinner, drinking an ombra (shadow) and eating some cicheto while having a friendly chat. It is here that Venetians take a break. The Bacaro is usually small and welcoming, run by hospitable, kind people. Here, the atmosphere is truly unique, sitting elbow to elbow with strangers: one of the many unique aspects of the lagoon city. While sipping an ombra (a glass of white wine), eat tasty bites of fried cod, sun-dried tomatoes, olives, oven cooked cuttlefish, cream cod on toast, meatballs, octopus, fried rice balls, beans and fried scampi on toothpicks. A must have is a slice of polenta with sardines in sauce or rice and peas, Venetian styled liver, or black risotto with cuttlefish.

Zhero Ming Poh, a graduate engineering student at MIT in Boston, is the brain that designed a software which allows anyone with cardiovascular problems to regularly check their own state of health. The patient only needs to stand in front of the mirror where the data is then superimposed.

Currently, prosthetic hands belong to three categories: those which solve the problem from a purely aesthetic view point; those which utilise rudimentary principles of mechanics to solve small practical impediments and those which use high-tech electronics which, despite their exaggerated cost, still maintain the appearance of an artificial prosthesis. Mark Stark was able to combine the best elements of each of these categories to literally give life to a minimalistic, lightweight, plastic limb which is only as expensive as a carbon steel hook but can be coated with a polymer that mimics the skin perfectly, giving it an almost human feeling.

Identikit del consumatore di vino in tempo di crisi

Al ristorante «i consumatori non ne potevano più di vini tutti struttura e alcol. Quelli, per intenderci, che quattro persone a tavola durante una cena non riescono a finire». Ne è convinto il giornalista Giorgio dell’Orefice, ma non è il solo a pensarla così tra gli operatori della filiera intervistati da Vinitaly. È questa l’altra faccia della crisi, quella che di fronte alla necessità di ridurre i costi diventa un’opportunità per alleggerire la cantina. «La maggiore consapevolezza induce a ripensare la gestione del magazzino – dice Corrado Mapelli, direttore commerciale del Gruppo Meregalli – portando il ristoratore a rinunciare alle etichette meno richieste e a concentrare la propria offerta». Per fare la giusta carta dei vini bisogna allora fare l’identikit del nuovo consumatore, sfatando magari alcuni tabù. Perché è vero che la crisi e le campagne contro il consumo di bevande alcoliche hanno condizionato pesantemente i consumi di vino al ristorante, ma è altrettanto vero che la diminuzione dei consumi è in atto ormai da anni in Italia e tendenzialmente li porterà al di sotto dei 40 litri pro capite. Svanisce intanto l’infatuazione per i vini strutturati ad ogni costo e il consumatore medio è diventato curioso, viaggia e assaggia vini di altri paesi. (continua a pag 50)

This is the other side of the crisis: when the need to reduce costs becomes an opportunity to lighten the cellar. “Increased awareness of this has led to a rethink on stock management” says Corrado Mapelli, commercial director of the Group Meregalli, “with restaurants no longer serving less requested labels in favour of a more concentrated choice”. To create a good wine list, an identikit of the new consumer is needed while perhaps dispelling some taboos. Although it is true that both the crisis and the campaign against alcoholic consumption have heavily influenced wine consumption in restaurants, it is equally true that there has been a reduction in wine consumption for years now in Italy, with less than under 40 litres per capita. Meanwhile, the infatuation for structured wines has worn off and the average consumer is more inquisitive, better travelled and drinks wines from other countries.

E poi ci sono le bollicine, che sono «una forte tendenza attuale - dice Nadia Zenato dell’Azienda vitivinicola Zenato – che ha visto crescere il prosecco, ma non solo» per un consumo che ormai copre tutto l’anno. Fondamentale sarà il rapporto qualità/prezzo e il ruolo di ristoratori e sommelier capaci di raccontare il vino, consigliare e orientare l’acquisto verso il gusto che il cliente cerca e verso il prezzo che è disposto a spendere.

IN FILA THREE IN PER TRE A ROW gni tanto mi ritrovo a canticchiare la canzone di Bennato “in fila per tre”. Il suo significato amaro e attuale mi fa venire in mente l’immagine dei bambini allineati che, in fila, entrano in classe: metafora di uno schema, di uno stato di cose. L’inquadramento nell’ordine sociale. Ma cos’è l’ordine? (per non dir del sociale..) L’ingresso nella scuola sancisce la fine dell’età dell’innocenza, dell’asilo. I nostri figli entrano a pieno titolo in un più grande meccanismo o, meglio, vengono inquadrati per poterne far parte in futuro, in fila per tre. Così succede che, a volte, gli entusiasmi iniziali e la precedente serenità vengano smorzati da inaspettati intoppi che ci colgono impreparati. Il bambino non scrive nel rigo, si alza dal banco, non sta attento. È chiaro, non è “scolarizzato”. Ci sentiamo in difetto innanzi alle prediche dei maestri. Se poi certi atteggiamenti si protraggono, i toni cambiano. Allora alla predica si sostituisce timidamente l’osservazione: “forse il bambino ha qualche problema” (in quei casi mi torna in mente ancora Bennato: “Dotti, medici e sapienti”…). Fioccano le diagnosi: disgrafico, dislessico, discalculico, disortografico… o semplicemente disgraziato! Poiché all’ipotesi della patologia, si affianca sempre quella dell’immaturità! Allora mi interrogo nuovamente su cosa sia l’ordine e, soprattutto, che significato abbia in relazione alla società. Penso a un contenitore dotato di micro-alveoli, celle (come l’alveare) di forma predefinita. I membri che vi trovano posto sono tasselli, il cui profilo e dimensioni devono combaciare con gli incassi. Così, il sistema tutto, quello scolastico in primis, è votato alla forgia di quegli esserini col fine di riempire gli alveoli. Ogni cosa al suo posto, un posto per ogni cosa. Che posto per chi non combacia? In fila per tre.

L’angoscia che mio figlio, così distratto, possa non trovare posto in una delle celle dell’alveare mi assale. Mi lancio su internet per saperne di più. Ciò che leggo fa rabbrividire. Comincio a temere che il bambino avrà problemi di adattamento e non socializzerà. Poi smetto di guardare internet e guardo lui. Tiro un sospiro di sollievo. Quando vado a prenderlo a scuola, in macchina, mentre sono assorta, lui mi dice: “mamma, oggi ho visto una cosa incredibile! Davvero! Ho visto una nuvola a forma di tartaruga! Si! Aveva anche il carapace!!”. Sorrido e gli passo una mano tra i capelli (ghignando orgogliosa: appena 6 anni e già sa cos’è un carapace!). Gli rispondo con un velo di amorevole ipocrisia, “è meraviglioso! E quando l‘hai vista? Alla ricreazione in cortile?” – “ma no, mamma! In classe, dalla finestra, mentre ero al banco, durante l’ora di italiano …”
