Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain, Edgar Meyer with RAKESH
Chaurasia
Mash-Up of the Maestros
Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain and Edgar Meyer are genre-bending masters on their respective instruments. Béla Fleck is widely considered to be the world’s premier banjo player. Fleck’s sound—steeped in jazz, funk, and bluegrass— has earned him Grammy nominations in more categories than any instrumentalist in Grammy history, and he has taken home 15 golden gramophones. Zakir Hussain is an international percussion phenomenon. Hussain is considered a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement and is a national
treasure in his native India. A virtuoso classical tabla player, Hussain’s hallmark is his uncanny intuition and masterful improvisation. Edgar Meyer, master of the double bass, has worked with the likes of Yo-Yo Ma and Chris Thile. Meyer combines unparalleled technique and musicianship on the double bass with a unique gift of composition, a combination that earned him a MacArthur Award. When these three singular talents take the stage together they are apt to traverse every geographic and stylistic corner of the globe, from classical to bluegrass to world music. This trio of maestros represent a merging of musical worlds!
“…Fleck, Meyer and Hussain are widely considered to be the leading virtuosos on their respective instruments.” – NPR [2011]

The Joey Alexander TRIO Jazz Piano Prodigy
Though only 15 years old, jazz pianist Joey Alexander is a seasoned pro; at the age of eight, he was a solo piano accompanist for jazz royalty Herbie Hancock. Alexander is a jazz phenom, but to view Alexander as just a child prodigy is to undersell him. He’s a sophisticated and vibrant interpreter as well as an accomplished composer and bandleader. Alexander has recorded two GRAMMY-nominated studio albums, a critically acclaimed album to honor Thelonius Monk’s centennial, and his adventurous latest release, Eclipse, containing six original compositions. In recordings and live on stage, Alexander thrills audiences with his playing while leaving them marveling at the many artistic paths open to him in the upcoming decades.
“There has never been anyone that you can think of who could play like that at his age. I love everything about his playing — his rhythm, his confidence, his understanding of the music.” –Wynton Marsalis

Anoushka Shankar Modern Sitar Master
When sitar player, composer and international sensation Anoushka Shankar takes the stage, audiences should, according to Time Out New York, “expect to be thoroughly intoxicated.” A singular figure in the Indian and progressive world music scenes, Shankar draws from classical ragas in a cross-cultural dialogue showcasing the versatility of her instrument across genres. Her dynamic and spiritual musicality have earned her scores of accolades, including six Grammy nominations and a British House of Commons Shield. At the age of nine, Shankar began her musical journey, studying exclusively under her father and guru, the late sitar legend Ravi Shankar. Audiences will be transported when Shankar takes the stage for what the Abu Dhabi Festival describes as a “not-to-be-missed evening of cutting edge musical discovery.”

Capitol Steps
Putting the Mock in Democracy Perennial Rialto fan favorites, the Capitol Steps have been putting the “mock” in Democracy for over 35 years. They’ve been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS, and on their own Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials. Started by a group of Senate staffers, the Capitol Steps still operate under their founding directive: all points on the political spectrum are
welcomed and dutifully skewered. Known for their equal opportunity lampooning, the Steps always deliver an evening of “unpresidented” musical political satire straight from the current headlines. Everyone’s politics gets spoofed. Everybody leaves laughing! “[The Capitol Steps’] political satire brings chuckles…rave reviews… guffaws…and bipartisan grins all around. The satire hits the mark.” –The Wall Street Journal

CANDIDE
Georgia State University Opera Theater School of Music Signature Series CANDIDE, based on Voltaire’s meandering, farcical epic of the same name, celebrates the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, its composer, this year. The novel is considered by most to be a spoof of certain religious doctrines that espoused blind optimism despite never-ending catastrophes. GSU Opera Theater’s production is based on the 1989 version that Bernstein conducted at the Tanglewood Festival. CANDIDE has too many lyricists to list, but it is the original brainchild of top-shelf American dramatist Lillian Hellman. The story, an allegory about the wanderings of an optimistic young lad faced with overwhelming loss, is clearly extreme. Keep your eyes and your ears open; CANDIDE is a wild ride! Oh, and happy birthday Bernstein!

Etienne Charles
With the Georgia State University Big Band School of Music Signature Series Trinidad native Etienne Charles defies easy musical categorization. At a young age he joined his father’s steel band performed at Carnival fêtes and immersed himself in the folklore. Through Etienne’s 2015 Guggenheim Fellowship Award, he returns to his roots to celebrate the traditions that
best exemplify Trinidadian culture. Etienne Charles is hailed by The New York Times as “an auteur” and NPR’s All Things Considered calls him “a great young trumpeter.” The Georgia State University Jazz Big Band, under the direction of Dr. Gordon Vernick, has played with the likes of Nicholas Payton, Jimmy Heath, Joe Lovano, Slide Hampton, and Paquito D’Rivera, among others.
