FIRST FEMALE CEO AT KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Tanzania has picked a female business specialist, Ms Christine Mwakatobe, to serve as a new chief executive officer at the country’s high-profile airport of Kilimanjaro. An influential lady, with diplomatic traits, Ms. Mwakatobe is expected to turn the country’s second largest airport into a fully-fledged commercial hub and state-of-the-art gateway, all-inclusive with the cutting-edge technologies, to enhance its capacity to handle aircrafts, passengers and cargoes. Ms. Mwakatobe, a vibrant and passionate female commercial specialist, with a solid education background and immense practical competencies, becomes the first female to oversee one of the country’s most strategic airports, handling nearly 80 percent of 1.5 million tourists visiting Tanzania annually.

FANS TROLL CLUB OWNERS FROM THE ROOFTOP OF AFRICA

A group of adventurous Manchester United Football Club supporters have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania then sent a defiant message to the club’s owners from the world’s tallest freestanding mountain. The explorers had traveled to Tanzania then climbed the full 5,895 meters of the mountain to literally take their protests to the new heights on top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The Reds fans have been increasing their calls for the Glazer family to sell the club due to their displeasure over their operations. A number of anti-Glazer protests have already taken place again this season, with supporters vowing to continue these until the owners are gone. October 2022

EAST AFRICAN REGIONAL TOURISM EXPO OPENS IN BURUNDI

East African Regional Tourism Expo kicked off in Burundi, signalling new development of joint tourism in East Africa as a single tourist bloc. With a theme of “Rethinking Tourism for Social Economic Development in the East African Community,” the week long East African Regional Tourism Expo (EARTE) second edition has attracted over 250 exhibitors from over 10 African countries, 120 international and regional travel agents, and buyers with about 2,500 trade visitors. Launched last year by the East African Community (EAC)Secretariat in Tanzania, the main objective of the regional tourism marketing and promotional platform is to promote EAC member countries as a single tourism destination.

SOUTHERN CIRCUIT TOURISM PROMOTION IN TOP GEAR

Njombe town was a hive of activity as an ambitious marketing and tourism promotion strategy was launched to take tourism to the next level in Southern Tanzania. The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Pindi Chana launched various posters to promote tourism attractions in the Southern circuit. The posters will introduce the Southern Circuit tourism attractions which will be officially entered into the tourism map. Tourism is currently the second largest foreign exchange earner after gold after it was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. It is also the second largest contributor to the gross domestic product (GDP) and the third largest contributor to employment. The sector generated 1.4 billion US dollars in revenues in 2021, up from 1.0 billion US dollars in 2020 when it was severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on international travel. Tourism attractions in the Southern Circuit among others include Kitulo National Park at Makete District and Nyumbanitu Natural Forest at Wangingombe District in Njombe Region.
