We are loving Teddington in this issue! Our Inspiring Woman, the celebrated interior designer Jenny Blanc, has her stunning showroom and UK head office on Teddington High Street. We are also bringing you a snapshot of some of the best the High Street and Broad Street have to offer. There is an amazing collection of beautiful boutiques, gift shops and muchpraised cafés and restaurants - well worth a visit if you haven’t been for a while. Spring is a busy time for wedding planning; perfect for us to feature fabulous local wedding suppliers who can make any bride’s day perfect. Now is also the time to treat your winter skin to a fabulous facial; we’ve tried and tested the hottest facial treatments you can enjoy locally. I know my mother would love these for Mother’s Day. Mental health is getting much needed focus by the government at the moment. We hope that our new columnist, Dr Mariette Jansen aka Dr De-Stress, will be able to help you by answering questions that are of concern to many, and Melissa James is doing her bit by singing for SANE, the mental health charity, to raise awareness and funds. The art scene is never dull in Kingston. The exhibition of the moment is Paul Mowatt’s, Artist in Residence at Kingston Museum, new works on Eadward Muybridge. Predictions for bathroom design for 2017 by Bathroom Eleven and key interior trends for the rest of the house by Absolute Abode are bound to get the designer in you excited. Hope you enjoy the read! 're sitting pretty in Jenny Blanc’s beautifully composed Teddington showroom at her UK Head Office and design rooms on Teddington High Street. Jenny has been at the helm of her award-winning interiors business for over twenty years, designing luxury homes both in the UK and Barbados, where her daughter Emma manages the business. Jenny’s career in interior design started at Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, the two Michelin star rated restaurant and hotel near Oxford. Jenny and her then husband, Raymond Blanc, one of Britain’s most celebrated chefs, bought Le Manoir in 1981.
What was your role in creating and running Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons? “When we went to view Le Manoir, Lady Cromwell, who owned it then, asked if we had the money to buy it. I confidently replied ‘Yes, of course’ bending the truth a little as I had complete faith in us as a team being able to raise the money and together, create a wonderful success. We put together a proposal to a group of 25 or so customers from the original small restaurant in Oxford, such as Sir Tim Rice and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, 6

inspiring woman to invest in the business. Raymond carried on creating his wonderful cuisine and I was involved in everything else that needed to be done with the mammoth task of transforming a private home into the quintessential English countryside hotel. I had a vision for how I wanted it to look and was lucky to have the help of a good friend, Michael Priest, who is an antiques dealer with impeccable taste. I decided each bedroom should be named after a flower and then decorated them according to the colour scheme of each flower. The results were stunning. We both worked with great passion and incredibly long hours to create what was then a totally unique combination of a stunning country house hotel with a two Michelin starred Restaurant.” When the marriage broke down Jenny carried on working in the business until Raymond’s new partner found the situation too difficult and Jenny decided to leave.
I’m curious to know how you came to choose Teddington as your UK base and showroom location? “After I left Le Manoir I had no intention to start another business. I was exhausted. It took my friend Chrissie Marshall three years to persuade me before we opened a showroom here” Jenny was living in Teddington with her new partner then. “We started by creating a stunning showroom with beautiful, bespoke home accessories sourced from all around the world. The design side grew organically when I was asked to do a job here and another
there from people who bought our products and luckily our clients loved what we were doing! We grew steadily and within ten years we had earned the reputation as one of the top UK designers, having won several International Design Awards and established a fantastic client list including several celebrities.”
How did you get started in Barbados? “I was introduced to Barbados by our design director, Sue Thomas Richardson, who started the business with us in Teddington and also happened to be Bajan. Sue had worked for several years with one of the top designers in Barbados and was the perfect person to start the Barbados business with as she had knowledge of local craftsmen and contacts and really understood the Caribbean lifestyle with what fabrics and colours work in the Caribbean climate. So we opened a beautiful, bespoke showroom on the prestigious West Coast and it has been a real success story, as we get a lot of business in the UK from people who love our unique style out there.”
You’ve built a successful business in a very competitive market where creating the wow-factor and paying attention to detail are key. Were you born with this talent or what is the secret of your success?
making someone a great designer. Although studying design and learning about the technical aspects is a great advantage, a natural skill for how to put things together and be creative is a must. My natural love of design comes from my grandmother who was a very stylish lady. She bought a care home and built it into a beautiful place where I, as a child, remember admiring lovely decorative details such as beautiful brass fittings or how different textures and patterns flowed. Determination, which I also got from my grandmother, is the other key quality. I have always had to work really hard in my life so I don’t believe that success has anything to do with luck!”

After spotting a disused toilet building near the bandstand, Filippo Selini and his wife started to develop an idea. Having worked on the “Canbury Secret” project for over a year, the plan is coming to fruition this Easter.
Canbury Secret , due to open during the Easter weekend this year, will be a seasonal kiosk café serving high quality refreshments and fine foods, especially Italian artisan coffee and ice cream, Gelato.
Breathing new life into the old toilet building will generate tangible benefits for the community, as it is a new, sustainable, independent business generating employment for local people and lease income for the council. Enhancing the healing environment Momentum joins forces with much-loved local children’s author Jacqueline Wilson for makeover at Kingston Hospital

ame Jacqueline Wilson is the inspiration behind a beautiful new refurbishment of an Isolation Room on Sunshine Ward at Kingston Hospital, recently completed by local children’s charity Momentum. Colourful images from books such as Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather now adorn the previously plain and clinical walls, thanks to £6,000 raised by Newland House School in Twickenham. The storyboard idea was a collaboration between Jacqueline Wilson and her illustrator Nick Sharratt, with local graphic
artist Tudor Morris (who as a teenager was supported by Momentum) assisting the project. Dame Jacqueline Wilson said: “I'm so pleased and proud that Tudor has designed such a wonderful room using Nick Sharratt's illustrations from my books. If looking at the pictures gives a sick child some entertainment or comfort I shall be so happy.”

Heads up for a TASTY
NIGHT OUT
Our editor dines at the recently revamped Queen’s Head on Richmond Road
T
he gleaming and polished exterior of this majestic looking Victorian pub is an impressive sight and its stylish, yet homely, interior doesn’t let you down either. Very hygge*. I’ve never had a ‘local’, or a ‘home from home’ pub, but if I did, this could easily be mine. The only thing missing was a fire in the fireplace which, sadly, has been out of action since the renovations according to Diana, our charming waitress.
Since her recent trip to India, beef was off the menu for Lyndsay, even an unholy Hampshire sirloin steak couldn’t tempt her, so I decided to order this mighty meat dish; served with salsa verde, watercress salad, pickled shallot salad, house chips and priced at £24.00. Although not a great meat eater, I really enjoyed it with its charcoal sealed outer and tender, perfectly cooked to medium rare, inside.
I had invited our columnist Lyndsay to join me for dinner, and not just for her great taste in cocktails! She ordered a blueberry and lavender mojito and I settled for a winter sangria with rosemary. Both drinks were low in sugar which I loved, Lyndsay less so, but was impressed after adding more sugar to hers.
Lyndsay’s main of pot roasted Hake with white beans and chorizo (£14) was a succulent piece of fish served on a flavoursome bed of healthy beans.
The food menu had enough choices for vegetarian, fish and meat lovers; all perfect for our January mood of eating more nutritionally balanced and wholesome food.
The peanut parfait with caramelised banana and popcorn (£6) was a fun sounding combo, and didn’t disappoint although needed a dollop of cream to balance the dryness of peanuts. The treacle tart with Fuller's raspberry ripple ice cream (£6) was also a sweet choice, made irresistible with extra cream.
Our starters of Hazelnut crumbed goat’s cheese, baby artichoke, pickled girolles (wild mushrooms), watercress, truffle oil (£7.50) and London porter smoked salmon croquettes, tartare dressing (£6.50) were both generous portions. Definitely a new way to enjoy goat’s cheese; an intense cheese dish which would benefit from being served with toast or bread. The salmon croquettes were fluffy and light inside with a delicious smoked salmon flavour.
The pudding menu would be difficult to ignore on any night and we needed no excuse.
Wines: Argentinian Cruz Alta Malbec, a robust wine was perfect with the steak and South African Merlot, smooth with fruity notes. * Danish; meaning nice, cozy, safe and familiar. queensheadkingston.co.uk

about. It didn’t feel too bad. A rejuvenating mask with antioxidants such as green tea and aloe vera followed in order to hydrate and sooth the skin. At the end a blend of cosmeceutical serums and creams completed the treatment.
The iS Clinical brand is available at in Harmony, Hampton Court; a lovely, tranquil place with a feel of the orient and the treatment menu of a top-notch medi-spa.
Wow! I was blown away by the smoothness of my skin afterwards. My stubborn lines, on my forehead especially, had disappeared and lines around my eyes seemed a lot finer. My skin is still looking and feeling hydrated and the deeper lines haven’t come back yet, a week after the treatment. See: inharmonyspiritbalance.co.uk
My therapist Ashley promised I would see amazing results even after one treatment (£80) although a course of three is recommended. This is an intensive resurfacing medi-facial using plant based pharmaceutical-grade ingredients - gentle on the skin but achieving maximum results. After cleansing my skin, a powerful Intensive Resurfacing Masque, made with sugar cane extract which is a potent natural source of glycolic acid and retinol (vitamin A), was applied to my face and left for 5 minutes. This was a peel, but so gentle that no down time was needed. Ashley warned me that the removal method would feel quite hot but was nothing to worry

already knew I’d like Erica at A Little Holistic Oasis, when I saw she had cats on her doormat and Beethoven on her doorbell. But I didn’t know I was going to love her new Zone FaceLift treatment so much that, during the last stage of the treatment (the application of quartz crystal balls to your cheeks: sounds kooky, feels fantastic), I was working out how to arrange a gift treatment for my mum and my sister. The Zone Facelift is a non-invasive anti-ageing treatment, designed by reflexologist to the stars Ziggie Bergman. Her programme only accepts master reflexologists and Erica at A Little Holistic Oasis is one of the first in SW London to train at the London School of Reflexology. It involves an holistic facial, facial reflexology and then the zone facelift. As a practising Reiki Master, Erica can add either Reiki or reflexology into the treatment. Bliss. For lasting effects, 6-12 treatments are recommended but after just one session my skin felt great and I felt absolutely fantastic – something a normal massage

Where do I turn if my child misses out on their preferred school choice? EMMA ROTHSTEIN OF PEARSON HARDS SOLICITORS EXPLAINS
A
ll parents want the very best education for their children and all want the school which best meets their child’s needs. However, obtaining a place at the best school for a child is not always easy. If your child is not given their first school choice the first question asked by most parents is whether the decision can be appealed. The chances of success in a School Appeal will very much depend upon the circumstances of each individual case. If your child has not been granted the school place of your choosing, the appeal process is open to all.
Infant School Appeals If you are looking to appeal a decision regarding your child’s allocated Infant School, parents should be aware that there are stringent rules regarding class size regulations. Infant classes are limited to 30 children and parents are likely to only be successful at an Infant School Appeal if an error
has been made in implementing the school’s admissions policy.
Junior and Secondary School Appeals Junior and Secondary School Appeals carry a different test to those of Infant Schools. When submitting an appeal for these schools, the Independent Admissions Appeal Panel must consider a two stage test:1. The Factual Test - whether the school’s Admission policies were lawful and had been correctly applied in the individual case; and 2. The Balancing Test whether the admission of the child would prejudice the child or the school more. If the former, provided that the first test has been satisfied, then the appeal is likely to be successful.
The appeals process is a complex one and parents often find that the decisions made by the Local Authority to place their child in a certain school are not clearly explained. Taking legal advice at an early stage can increase your chances. If you would like any further information and some guidance on the process to help you obtain a place for your child at the school of your choice, please contact Emma Rothstein in our Dispute Resolution Department. We can offer fixed fees to guide you through each stage of the appeal process. phone: 020 8949 9500 email: erothstein@ pearsonhards.co.uk
There are strict timetables for submitting a School Appeal which differ from Borough to Borough.

Will Kingston get its own ARTS
CENTRE?
Our editor chats to artist Janie Harland, founder of FusionARTS
T
he future of one of the largest and most vibrant art spaces in Kingston is under threat. FusionARTS on Eden Street, home to over 40 artists’ studios for over 13 years, needs to find a new space before the redevelopment of their building starts in 2019.
Janie Harland
FusionARTS was founded in 2004 by Janie. There were no decent workspaces in Kingston for small creative enterprises, so she sought out other artists who shared her vision for setting up a studio operation. Over the years it has supported 100s of artisans of all genres.
Kingston has truly excellent Art education - but historically tends to lose many of its graduates to the trendier East End. For many years, FusionARTS has housed University arts courses in a unique collaboration. Janie tells me, “We are in talks with the council to find a new home for us while the redevelopment takes place; ideally a multi-use space accessible to the public with exhibition space, seminar rooms, coffee shop and artists' studios. Ambitious? Yes, but so was creating a town centre Artists' Studio Complex out of nothing. I’m confident.” fusionartsstudios.co.uk

Kingston’s UNSUNG HERO gets new exciting exhibits at the town museum Do you know who Eadweard Muybridge was? Darling editor visits Kingston Museum to find out
K
ingston Museum’s very first Artist in Residence, photographer Paul Mowatt, has produced ten captivating works on Eadweard Muybridge; two pieces of video and eight photographic, these will show the human body in motion, through slow-motion, time-lapse, and stroboscopic photographic techniques. Paul is trying to 'bridge' the gap from were Muybridge started with his scientific studies to where we are today with our modern technical ability to capture human motion using various techniques. Muybridge saturated his subjects in harsh, midday, Californian sunshine and produced the world’s first electronic high speed shutter system, to achieve the amazing 'frozen in time' images of his subjects, which otherwise would have been impossible to photograph with the normal cameras of the day. He was the Stanley Kubrick of his day, always experimenting and modifying equipment in order to get the best possible results from it. Paul is a perfect person for the job, not only as a celebrated photographer, but also as an admirer of Muybridge. He would also love to see a statue of this most amazing son of Kingston erected in his home town. Now, wouldn’t that be a great addition to the arty image Kingston is working on to raise for itself ?!
The Museum houses the world’s largest permanent collection on Muybridge*, who emigrated to America as a young man, returning to England to take up photography as a profession. He gained at least two patents for his inventions. He returned to San Francisco and gained worldwide fame for his large works of Yosemite Valley. He was a pioneer in capturing motion using multiple cameras and developed zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures, that pre-dated the flexible perforated film strip used in cinematography. Muybridge returned to Kingston where he lived in the town centre for the last ten years of his life, before his death in 1904. This extraordinary man’s life didn’t lack drama; in 1847 he shot dead his wife’s lover but was acquitted by a jury on the grounds that it was a crime of passion. He also faced a lot of objection for filming people naked in order to capture the body’s movement in its purest form. Paul’s works on Muybridge will be on show at the museum from 20 January until 24 June.
Paul Mowatt with a late 1800s camera
If you haven’t visited the museum yet, this is a great reason to acquaint yourself with a fascinating part of our local history. *The collection was bequeathed to the Museum from Muybridge on his death.

about a person's mental struggles. I run a singing group at The Albert in Norbiton and, in October 2015, I invited these singers to sing backing vocals on "Live Again" at a concert. This was the seedling idea for SING4SANE and SANE became my charity to work with.

Music can help to say things that we’re otherwise afraid to say in conversation. People might recognise themselves in the “Live Again” story. This makes them feel “normal” and creates a “silent” connection. I want to challenge our ideas of mental health and our view of the word “mental”. We all have minds and we can all be affected at any time. Download the SING4SANE single, “Live Again”, from iTunes, Amazon or GooglePlay. All sale proceeds go to SANE. Inspiring the next generation of ATHLETES Scott Mills, marathon runner and assistant coach at the Weir Archer Academy looks at MBE Jenny Archer's incredible career in sport
O
n Monday 14th November 2016 at the Royal Borough of Kingston Sports Awards ceremony, one of the most prestigious awards in the borough was about to be presented to a very special person.
However, the awards or the accolades are not the driving force behind the success of this extremely hard-working coach; Jenny’s motivation comes from helping others and seeing her athletes achieve what some people perceive as unachievable goals. A prime example of what is the Weir Archer Academy.
At an event that celebrated Kingston’s most successful athletes, coaches and sports clubs, it was no surprise to see Jenny Archer MBE of the Weir Archer Academy being awarded with the Eileen Gray Award.
When it was formed in 2013, both Jenny and David had a vision not only to improve participation rates in disabled sport but also to be a dominant feeder club for Paralympic athletes. Since then she has worked tirelessly every single day to make sure that her athletes realise their full potential and see their dreams come true.
The Eileen Gray Award is given to a coach or an athlete who has motivated and been an inspiration to others to reach their potential, something that Jenny has dedicated her entire life to.
Whether it’s rain, snow, sleet or shine, she will be at Richmond Park every morning without fail to train and support her athletes and also at Kingsmeadow Athletics track on Monday and Wednesday evenings.
From starting out as a PE teacher to breaking down gender barriers by not only becoming one of the first women working in professional football but also taming Wimbledon Football Club’s infamous FA Cup winning ‘Crazy Gang’ in the 1980s, Jenny has had an incredible career in sport spanning over 40 years.
You only have to go back as far as last year’s Paralympics in Rio to see the result of Jenny’s work with the likes of David Weir, Mo Jomni and Mickey Bushell MBE, all representing Great Britain.
Jenny has also coached one of Britain’s most decorated and successful athletes; David Weir to six Paralympic Gold and IPC World Championship medals and six London Marathon titles since the pair teamed up in 2002.

Wills for Business Owners wills FOR
BUSINESS OWNERS’
Keeping it in the family, with Hart Brown
Business Wills Taking the necessary steps to pass the family business on to the next generation raises complex and emotion laden issues and, if not handled successfully, can be one of the main causes of division and tension that damages family life and ultimately undermines or destroys business performance. 32 24
spring 2017 | darlingmagazine.co.uk SPRING 2017 darlingmagazine.co.uk
There are, of course, alternatives to succession, most common is some form of sale as a going concern as this is likely to recover the most value from the business. Alternatives within this option include trade sale, which may be particularly appealing when no suitable successor can be found, or stock market floatation can be the best answer if external

capital to finance growth is a priority. Similarly, a management buy-out financed by private equity funding can offer a compromise between transferring the shares of the family in an outright trade sale. There is always the option of liquidation and, finally, the option of doing nothing. Doing nothing is the least logical, the most costly and most destructive of all the options, yet it is by far the most popular. If the planned alternative is succession, we would nearly always recommend that the current owners or the “Founder” should have in place a written succession plan which incorporates a step by step approach to dealing with the practical and psychological aspects of the transition process – in other words, a business will.
Succession Planning The business will can include as much detail as appropriate, (i) a detailed timetable that plots each phase of the Founder’s reduced participation in the business (ii) a timetable mapping out the chosen successor’s expanding role and responsibilities (iii) a map of the structure and the functioning of the management team after the transition. In doing so, the Founder should ensure that everyone is involved in putting together this process, that a training process is established, that there is a plan for retirement of the Founder, and then that all the parties action the plan. Successor Identity There is also the dilemma of whom to choose. The eldest son, or where several children are in the frame, a first among equals. There may be daughters or in-laws, or indeed the hiring of professional managers to run the business which would of course provide a clear solution to the co-ownership problem. shop local
It is also recognised that over-promoting family members is ill-advised. It is not only damaging to the business, but, by putting any family member into a job that is beyond their capabilities, the business risks causing more alienation among family members, and destabilising more than just one promising career. It is possible that some may not be up for the job at the moment, but they could grow into it in the future. A good option for a potential successor is to look to gain career experience outside of the family business to develop the skills needed for the role they will play when they eventually join.
The next generation A willingness of family company owners to plan for their succession is often a decisive factor in determining whether the business survives or fails. Some argue that family firms should never be put in the hands of the Founder’s children, and that the more successful the Founder and the larger the company the less likely that the children will be capable of running it. But there are many examples of highly profitable and well run family firms, both public and private, which have remained in family ownership for generations. A family is a complex organism and a business is a complex entity. Putting the two together will always have its challenges and passing a family business on to the next generation equally so. As for the business will, well one could say it is in fact less about inheriting and more about promoting.

Surbiton is home to one of
England's oldest boys' prep schools Darling editor meets Headmaster Kevin Doble in his study at Shrewsbury House School Is it necessary that single sex education survives in today’s world where gender equality in all areas is increasingly important? “Before I came to Shrewsbury House, the relatively rural schools in which I taught were all co-ed, presenting a more natural environment that mirrored the world at large. South West London and her neighbouring counties, boast an unparalleled concentration of world-class boys' schools in which
dence and academic acceleration in classes. In single sex schools, the boys are less inhibited and are more liable to 'have a go', allowing for the necessary acceleration. I do believe that a co-ed environment is beneficial later, especially in the Sixth Form.”
How is the move by many independent boys' senior schools towards 11+ intake changing the future for prep schools? “Given how hugely impressionable they are, I strongly believe that boys benefit from staying in a prep-school until they are 13. Being a child in a familiar and nurturing environment, where they can stretch their wings, take risks and make mistakes, and learn that it’s perfectly fine to fail occasionally, is what builds confidence. The upper years, 7 and 8, give our boys a change to take on new, significant responsibilities as seniors whilst still being children.”
the levels of educational and academic aspirations are extraordinary. In order for boys better to thrive, the dynamics within these schools need to be considered carefully, especially for boys between the ages of 7 and 13. Emotional intelligence matures and develops earlier in girls. Between the ages of 9 and 13, boys tend to lag behind girls in social skills and their relative immaturity can impact on their confi-
What qualities does an outstanding school have?
What are your thoughts on tutoring? “In my opinion there is a very real danger of children being overtutored and having their creativity undermined. In assessment situations this may mean that they are not prepared to back their own instincts due to their fear of 'not getting it right'. Tutoring can be very successful when used to address a need over a short period if delivered following the SMART principle: specific, manageable, attainable, realistic and target driven.” shrewsburyhouse.net
“What we take with us when leaving school cannot just be academic results and sporting and arts achievements. Critically important are the ability and confidence to be creative in both social and work situations. A great school prepares its students to be balanced, assured, open-minded and adaptive throughout their lives.”

A: Dear Sarah, it is great to be willing to make changes to your life. But change is difficult and challenging, as you have experienced. Two things are missing in your query: your goals and your motivation. Your goals need to be realistic, and your motivation will get you through. Your goal is external. For you it could be your target weight and exercise achievement, like running a 10K. You will achieve that if you know your emotional motivator, the underlying reason why you wanted the change. Is it because you want to be an active and fun grandmother? Or do you want to lift your self-esteem and confidence by looking fitter? Those deep reasons will keep you on track if the going gets tough. Question yourself on a deeper level and you will find you can achieve your goals.

Identifying
loneliness and isolation
Staywell has helped over 60s for over 70 years
O
ver the years, Staywell has provided the older residents of the Royal Borough of Kingston with quality assured information and advice on a wide range of subjects, including money, pensions and benefits, health and community care, housing, transport and support at home. But while the queries may initially seem to be about getting some practical information, our well trained advisers frequently find there is a far deeper issue of loneliness and isolation at play. Loneliness is not the same as social isolation – which is broadly defined as the absence of social contact – but social isolation can contribute to feelings of loneliness. People who are lonely often want human contact, but their state of mind can make it more difficult to connect with other people. Research shows
that social isolation and loneliness are often associated with depression, poor health and chronic illness. It can feel difficult to take the first step, but there are a lot of organisations around, including Staywell, that can provide a whole range of social interactions from things as low-key as a regular fortnightly phone call from the same person, to lunches and teas, social clubs and activity groups. That first step can really boost a person’s confidence, and help them on their way to enjoying a more socially active and therefore fulfilling life.

What’s trending in
BATHROOMS for 2017?
Jasmine Shaddock met with Johanna Flores, lead design expert at Bathroom Eleven, to hear her predictions for 2017
A
t Bathroom Eleven, we are always looking ahead to the next year and the latest design trends for our Luxury Designer Bathrooms. We are still seeing a great interest in natural influences using materials like wood and marble. Adding something natural into a bathroom has always been a great way of making a space feel calm. The natural design element will definitely continue into 2017 being designed in more modern, minimalistic bathrooms or to give more classic ideas a contemporary update. Henry Holland also pioneered the emersion of the 70s style jungle green colour palette. This late bloomer trend will have much more room to grow in 2017 – especially with a heavier emphasis on statement colours. We love to use striking colours in inventive and interesting ways in our bathrooms. We want our clients to be bold and let their personalities shine in their choice of colour in their room. This is something that we will take into 2017 and give a fresh new twist. 2016 saw a rise in popularity for metallic finishes from taps to mirrors, and it seems that there is no sign of this trend slowing down. Two influential bathroom companies have released rose gold colour ranges that we think are going to be a real hit. The new ranges from Porcelanosa and Zuchetti in this finish are so
beautiful that it’s hard to believe that they will not become more and more popular in 2017. Tiling will also see a huge advancement in designs for tiled areas thanks to a very exciting new product from Porcelanosa. Full height tiles from Porcelanosa will be available in 2017 and will come in sizes of 120x250cm and 100x300cm. This could be a game changer as we could tile an entire shower area without any grouting at all, which would give designers and clients a much more beautiful seamless option for finishing their bathrooms and a practical one at the same time. From a design perspective, these tiles will look incredibly luxurious and create clean lines across the whole bathroom – particularly good for a minimalist finish. Torta Pasqualina
Fancy something different this Easter?
Carefully make four large holes in the spinach mixture with a spoon, big enough to take an entire egg each. Cut an 18cm circle out of the second sheet of puff pastry. Place it carefully over the top of the mixture, and use a sharp knife to score a cross in the pastry over the eggs so that when you come to cut the pie you will cut the eggs in half. Beat the remaining egg with a fork and paint the disc of pastry with it. Gently fold down the edges of the pastry lining to join up with the disk and seal the pie. Paint the top of the pie with the beaten egg and put the whole thing in the fridge for 30 minutes.
T
orta Pasqualina, or Easter Pie, is a well-known Italian Easter tradition. Originally from Liguria, in northwest Italy, it’s now popular all over the peninsula. The most important aspect of the Torta Pasqualina is the eggs baked inside. When you cut the pie you should see the egg sliced through the middle in what’s a beautiful and festive effect. To help with this, I always score a cross in the top of the pie so that you can see where to cut. Ingredients 800g of spinach 500g of ricotta cheese 6 eggs 2 sheets of puff pastry salt and black pepper
40
Method Wash the spinach leaves carefully and boil in plenty of water on low heat for 15 minutes. When the spinach has cooled down, put it into a blender and whizz for a few seconds to chop it into small pieces. Alternatively, you could do this with a knife. Then, in a bowl, mix the spinach with the ricotta cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste and mix in one egg. Butter a deep 20cm cake tin and line it with one of the sheets of puff pastry. Pour in the spinach mixture and transfer the tin to the fridge to chill for about 30 minutes.

While the pie is in the fridge, preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4. Remove the pie from the fridge and, if you want to, score a pattern on the top of the pie with a sharp knife. Make a small hole in the centre of the pie with the knife, paint one final layer of beaten egg on the top, and bake it in the oven for an hour.

POCKET HOMES arrive in Kingston 26 one and two bedroom homes coming soon on Cowleaze Road
I
nnovative housing developer Pocket Living is building its first scheme in Kingston.
Pocket has been building compact homes across London for well over a decade. Their homes are carefully designed from the inside out for the way Londoners live today. Pocket apartments are for local people to own and enjoy living in (not investors), and thanks to the fantastic roof terrace, homeowners can quickly form a strong community. The new homes are on Cowleaze Road, just three minutes from Kingston Station, and will provide 21 one bedroom apartments and 5 two bedroom apartments. The handsome four storey brick building has been designed by award-winning architects Haworth Tompkins. There is a spacious roof terrace for all residents to enjoy and well-designed landscaping in the communal areas. Striking supergraphics guide you around the interior and there is ample secure cycle storage. The apartments have been thought-
fully designed with fully fitted kitchens, wetroom bathrooms and clever storage solutions.
These homes launch for sale in March, with the building completing later this year.
Pocket’s one bed homes are sold at a 20% discount to the local market price, because they’re just for first time buyers. These apartments enable young professionals from the local area to put down roots and get onto the property ladder.
To register your interest sign up at pocketliving.com or call the Pocket Sales team on 0203 713 9278.

THIRD STOP: Goa. A lift from the north back to my beach hut 95 km away was another adventure. The biker who offered me a free ride, shoved me on a local bus when his motor broke down. But, the bus-ride ended in a city where there was actually money in the cashpoints (the November Indian bank crisis meant everyone was scrambling for notes and limited to £22 a day). I took out £100 on the kindness of the guard. Enough to now stop off at the famous Anjuna market on the way home, where I blissfully re-distributed the rupees to the starved-for-business stall holders, and came home with a second suitcase.
