ingston has so much to offer all year round but one of its best features, the riverside, really comes to life in the  summer. We’ve teamed up with our favourite riverside restaurants; find out what’s cooking in their kitchens and take your pick for tonight’s dinner! Luckily there is plenty of summer left to eat and drink your way through them all! The art scene is never dull in Kingston; Rose Theatre can always be relied upon to bring us quality productions. Local artists open their studios for visitors over two weekends in June and the International Youth Arts Festivals will take over the town in July. We are so pleased to have, as our Inspiring Woman, the amazing Reverend Ingrid Scott and as our local artist, the talented Simone Kay, who creates beautiful stained glass artwork and windows. As always, we’ve included a wealth of information from great local experts on health, wellness and beauty as well as homes and interiors; and we haven’t forgotten your summer garden either. Count your blessings Reverend is just one of the many roles Ingrid Scott embraces By Marja-Leena Toseland

I

met Ingrid for a delicious lunch which she had prepared at her beautiful, fantastically colourful and unique house opposite the river Thames in East Molesey. I was here to find out about her role as a Reverend running a virtual ministry, which offers tailor-made ceremonies and services that are interfaith and interspiritual, or non-faith, be it a marriage blessing, a baby naming or a funeral which she offers to write in advance, thereby alleviating some of the stress on bereft families and giving you the last chance to say your goodbyes.

values such as peace, wisdom, compassion, service and above all love which are inherent in all authentic spiritual and religious traditions. Therefore, I chose to be ordained as an interfaith and interspiritual minister, who acknowledges that there is but one Power, Presence, Source, regardless of whatever name you

More and more people are identifying themselves as being spiritual but not religious, meaning that they acknowledge something that is greater than what we can understand. Many don’t align themselves with a particular faith or set of doctrines but embrace meditation, prayer, yoga, spiritual

I wasn’t expecting to find out that Ingrid also has a sizeable charity, run by Coutts bank, and is the sole owner of a very successful manufacturing business that she set up together with her ex-husband over 30 years ago. When she was going through divorce she raised £3.5 million (which she paid off in 5 years) to buy her business partner husband out of the business.

“To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

You have been a Reverend for six years now. What led to you wanting to become one?

choose to call or ascribe to it and honours the Divinity expressing in and through all of its creations.

“I’m an absolute lover of Jesus but I am not a Christian, just as Jesus himself was not! I believe that there are deep truths and

healing modalities etc. So it was important to me to make my ministry be inclusive and reflect the needs of 21st century living and create a Cyber Community, where, once a week on a Sunday morning, people could phone in from the comfort of their own

..................... home; join with like minded folk to have Contemporary Fellowship that invited and supported people in growing personally and developing spiritually!” Ingrid invites you to call in at 10am on Sunday mornings 08444 737133 pin: 948236. You also started an impressive charity, the CBD Charitable Trust, that runs projects world- wide. Can you tell us about your charity’s work? “To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." — Ralph Waldo Emerson. I love this quote by Emerson and, when I decided to set up my charity as part of my ministry, I knew I could not restrict my work to just one particular area. So my charity covers women, children, health,

education, community, same gender issues, spirituality and the environment. I wanted it to be as broad and as inclusive as possible! My projects are both large and small, local and global. Whilst I do support a lot of worthy causes in the UK, my large projects are abroad, as money tends to go further there, such as building a clinic in Uganda which services a village of 240k people! Building a women’s and girls’ skills centre in India training hundreds with skills to help them out of poverty; supporting, teaching, counselling, clothing and feeding children rescued from the sex industry in Cambodia for two years; planting thousands of trees in Kenya and helping the preservation of the White Lions in South Africa are just a few of our projects. The list is extensive and can be seen on my website cbdct.org. All the fees from my ceremonies and services performed are donations to my charity. So its a win-win. The people I’m writing a bespoke ceremony for get a really

wonderful blessing written for them and, in turn, their fees are used to help someone deserving somewhere in the world and I get to fulfil my purpose as being a vessel for the Divine.” How do you still have time to run your manufacturing business as well? “I have a wonderful management team that runs my business for me! I speak daily with them and go in either fortnightly, monthly or whenever needed for meetings and see my staff. I believe that the Divine is in charge in all that concerns me including my business and so I surrender and trust and we’re still going strong!” www.cbdifm.org www.cbdct.org

THE POSTERS by Richard Jones of The Tennis Gallery

E

ver since the very first lawn tennis championships were played just off Wimbledon’s Worple Road in 1877 ordinary people have sought to emulate the grace, style and athleticism of the players who perform annually on the verdant lawns of the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Right from its earliest days in Victorian England, the game of tennis was seen as a symbol of aspiration, and as a result was seized upon by advertisers wishing to sell their products and services to the masses. Tennis is rare amongst the major sports in providing women and men the opportunity to play and socialise together, and tennis imagery is the perfect vehicle to advertise family holiday destinations, hotels, and travel by rail and air. The early days of the twentieth century saw a surge of growth in travel and tourism, and railway stations were the ideal places in which to display promotional material. Whilst commuters waited for rush hour trains, posters made them think longingly of trout fishing in the Scottish Highlands or winter skiing trips to the French Alps. Railway companies both in the UK and abroad began to commission artists to create appealing designs for their advertising posters, and tennis was a popular theme used to sell a diverse range of products from biscuits, brandy and bicycles through to car tyres, coffee and Coca Cola.

of leisurely exercise, sophisticated onlookers and an attractive resort backdrop. As well as these general commercial uses, tennis images are also of course featured on posters advertising rackets, balls, clothes, shoes and tournaments. Each year the French Tennis Federation (FFT) commissions an established artist to produce a poster design to promote the French Open at Roland Garros, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments. This series dates back to 1980, and the most famous artist to contribute was the Spaniard Joan Miro in 1991. Miro’s avant garde image was given to the FFT by his family shortly after his death, the artist himself having been offered the commission during his last years.

In Britain, celebrated poster artist Tom Purvis produced a classic poster design entitled Harrogate - The British Spa which featured an Edwardian couple playing mixed doubles whilst their fashionable friends looked on. At around the same time, leading French poster artist Roger Broders produced the classic Monte Carlo tennis poster for the Paris Lyon Méditerranée railway. Both these famous posters - like many others produced during the 1920s and 30s - featured a combination Images courtesy of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum.

tennis The All England Lawn Tennis Club also produces an annual poster to promote the Wimbledon Championships. This series dates back to 1990, although posters were produced on an ad hoc basis in earlier years. The 2015 Wimbledon poster was recently unveiled, and is based on a 3-D “paper graphic” design entitled Wimbledon Awaits by London-based Russian artist Yulia Brodskaya. This striking image has at its centre the date 29.06.15, emphasising that this year the Championships has moved into a new position in the tennis calendar, one week later than before. The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum at the All England Club is currently hosting a special exhibition entitled Powerful Posters - Tennis and Advertising 1893-2015. The exhibition has been conceived and produced by Anna Renton and her team. Anna, who was appointed Curator at Wimbledon in 2014, was previously at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden, home to one of the world’s major poster collections.

Included in the exhibition are the famous Athena “Tennis Girl” poster by Martin Elliott, which is displayed alongside the tennis dress made by Carol Knotts and worn by her friend Fiona Butler in the original photograph, and an early Wimbledon Championships poster produced by Edwin Trim of Wimbledon in 1893. This rare letterpress poster was found behind an old mirror and sent in by a member of the public suggesting it might be of interest and, if not, “please could we burn it!” Powerful Posters - Tennis and Advertising 18932015 is open to Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum visitors every day from 10.00am to 5.30pm and will run until February 2016.

Stay safe ONLINE

Katerina Damcova Managing Director, IQ in IT

sing computers can be a scary prospect. There are new dangers and risks surfacing every day. Today I will give you some easy tips you can follow to keep these threats at bay. The first and most simple task you can do to keep yourself safe online is to always make sure you are communicating your information securely. Any time you provide personal information, especially usernames and passwords, you should make sure that you are doing it in a way only the intended person can read. Initially, if you look in the address bar there should be a padlock. You can also tell by making sure the address starts with https and not http. This is just the first level of security websites should be using and so, if a website is not using https and is asking for personal details, you should not provide any information - it is likely they are not concerned about keeping your information safe.

“The biggest threat we are seeing at the moment is called 'ransomware'. This is particularly nasty as it will encrypt all your files, then display a message demanding money to regain access to them.” I know, you have heard it a million times before, but you should use a different password for every website. All it takes is one website to be compromised for someone to gain access to the rest of your sites. It can’t be expected for someone to remember a unique password for every website so there are a number of tools which will do this for you. For example https://lastpass.com/ will generate and store passwords for you.

The biggest threat we are seeing at the moment is called ransomware. This is particularly nasty as it will encrypt all your files, then display a message demanding money to regain access to them. To resolve this there are normally two options, restore the files from a backup or pay a ransom. Due to the especially malicious nature of this, if your backups are stored somewhere visible to your computer, it will encrypt those as well. To prevent this, the first step is to make sure you are using an up to date antivirus product. Next, make sure your backups are kept somewhere safe, such as an external hard disk which is kept unplugged when you have completed a backup. Ransomware is most commonly spread by email, so always take care whenever you open any attachments and remember that people you know may have had their address book compromised. www.iqin.it tel: 033 0122 4420 or 020 8166 8716

DON'T LET THE FLIGHT RUIN YOUR HOLIDAY

By Anne Williams

Anne Williams, of Transforming Health, specialises in helping people overcome fear of flying and other phobias

W

hile many of us look forward eagerly to the summer holiday season and can't wait to jet off abroad for some guaranteed sunshine and time to relax, for some, one big dread looms large – the flying. For lots of people, like my client Liz, fear of flying ruins the pleasure of a much needed break. For Liz, flights were a misery of nausea and panic. She felt sick days beforehand and could never enjoy the second half of her holiday, because of worry about the flight home. It's no good telling people like Liz that flying is the safest form of transport. They know all that and it makes no difference to the feelings of terror they experience. Logic doesn't work on the powerful unconscious processes being activated. The good news for Liz, and for anyone who suffers from a fear

of flying, is that you can overcome it. Like any fear or phobia, it's a learned response, driven by the unconscious and you can unlearn it. But you have to do it the right way.

“The good news is that you CAN overcome your fear.”

You might be familiar with the saying 'Feel the fear and do it anyway’. In fact, this can be the worst thing to do, because you risk reinforcing your fear response. Face your fear, yes, but with the right preparation. The best antidote to fear is relaxation. To overcome your fear of flying, you must learn effective

relaxation techniques, such as breathing and muscle relaxation. I also taught Liz cue-controlled relaxation, whereby she learned to deeply relax her body at will. Then you need to engage the power of your imagination to mentally rehearse going on a flight, imagining staying calm throughout. The more you practise this, the more your mind begins to associate flying with feeling calm and the fear fades. The quickest and easiest way to do this is in hypnosis, because it has more impact on changing your unconscious, instinctive fear response. After just a few sessions of hypnosis, Liz was able to fly off happily to Cyprus, feel calm and comfortable on the flights, and fully enjoy every single day of her holiday. Dare to bare! Laser – the best way for hair free and smooth skin

by Marja-Leena Toseland

I

had never experienced a laser treatment of any kind before but decided to see what the hype was all about.

I was off to Premier Laser Clinic in Kingston’s Eden Street to try out laser hair removal on my lower legs and underarms. I was asked to shave in advance in order to enable the laser to target the root of the hair follicle with maximum effect. Different types of laser are used for different skin types and colours. The clinic uses uses worldleading, medical grade, laser technology that is FDA approved. Due to my light skin and hair type my therapist, Rochan, used the Alexandrite Laser on me. She was great at explaining the science behind lasers and what she needed to do with my skin and hair type to achieve the best possible results. With over 15 years of experience in providing laser treatments, she really made me feel at ease. It’s important to take note of the before and after-care advice, which includes avoiding sun for a while and wearing high SPF on the treated areas. Good to know when planning your treatments around a holiday in the sun!

14

I had had my patch test a few days earlier to check that my skin wouldn’t react to the treatment. The treatment itself was quick and almost pain-free. I only felt a slight pricking in few areas and a sensation of the skin warming up, although it was being cooled down with a powerful airjet at the same time. Afterwards, a cooling and soothing Aloe gel was applied. I didn’t have any redness or feeling of sunburn either, although that is fairly common for a few hours afterwards. Laser hair removal is perfect for excessive hair growth and if you are prone to ingrown hair. Especially great for areas where you want a permanent solution, such as the face, but fantastic for all areas too as it’ll be less time consuming and cheaper than waxing in the long run! A series of treatments are required to achieve effective results, usually a minimum of eight. www.londonpremierlaser.co.uk tel: 0203 6006 888

Radiant and glowing skin in an hour, and promising lasting results – is that really possible? by Marja-Leena Toseland

M

y skin was in need of a deep cleansing facial and I could do with a miracle that reduces fine lines, enlarged pores and improves the look of sun damaged or congested skin too. The Spa Boutique in Norbiton promised to deliver instant and lasting results with their Deluxe Facial which is a Diamond-Tip Microdermabrasion, that erases the epidermal layers, minimising skin trauma and also invigorating cell renewal to create a healthy, balanced skin surface. The lovely therapist, Sinead, was very knowledgeable in explaining all the stages thoroughly and in finding out what my skin type is, before starting with cleansing the skin and applying a hydrating moisturiser.

My face and areas on my decolletage, where I have age spots and sun damage, were then polished with a diamond-tipped wand, which felt like my face was being vacuumed. To soothe my skin and to give it a real boost, a cooling collagen mask was rolled over my face and I was left to relax for 10 minutes for it to take effect. The facial really lived up to its promise. My skin was brighter, and looked tighter and lifted too. Visible results after just one treatment, but regular maintenance treatments are recommended. Experience the Deluxe Facial at The Spa Boutique for just £50 (down from £75). www.thespaboutique.webs.com tel: 020 8549 8103

The product will keep on working for the next 72 hours. How much will I lose? Everyone is different, but the average loss after the initial treatment is between 3 and 6 inches, up to approximately 10 inches in total, after 72 hours providing you follow aftercare. Natural Solutions to the MENOPAUSE The menopause affects all women, but it doesn’t have to be a nightmare! Let’s look at myths surrounding the menopause! • • • • • • • • •

Weight gain is inevitable Menopause begins at 50 There is no difference between natural menopause and ‘surgical’ menopause Sex drive will decrease The first sign of menopause is hot flushes After menopause your body doesn’t produce hormones The older you are when you started your periods, the older you are when you go through menopause Menopause only causes physical symptoms The best way through menopause is HRT

With so many negative stories, it isn’t surprising women begin to feel anxious, sometimes even before they’ve had any symptoms. The truth is menopause has challenges. But these are not insurmountable, once we understand our bodies and the hormonal changes occurring during menopause. Most are aware that natural production of oestrogen starts to decline from our mid 40’s, but did you know that progesterone, our fat burning hormone, starts to decline in our 30’s? This imbalance of progesterone and oestrogen causes menopausal symptoms. However, today’s lifestyle is exacerbating these symptoms! Stress puts a huge strain on our endocrine system, particularly the adrenals and liver. These two glands should take over the production of progesterone and oestrogen from the ovaries during menopause but stress, together with poor diet and food quality and the wrong type of exercise, will put further stress on our bodies. This means we will have an increased level of cortisol. Cortisol steals building blocks from the sex hormones and reduces the amount of oestrogen and progesterone the body produces even more. Additionally, the combination of cortisol and insulin will lead to the fixing of fat in the abdominal area.

How can we address this naturally? Eat foods that support the liver • Omega 3s – salmon, tuna, avocados • Cabbage and broccoli • Lemons and limes • Oils – flax, coconut, hemp • Apples • Green tea Avoid foods that cause insulin release • Wholegrain breads • Sweet fruits • Dairy food • Starch vegetables • Sugary foods • Complex carbs Eat foods that are low-insulin release • Protein • Low starch veg • Dark fruits • Good quality fats Avoid cardio workouts of more than 20 minutes and introduce more relaxation techniques. Menopause doesn’t have to be a time of confusion and anxiety. It can be a time to experience fantastic wellness and happiness. When we pay attention to our symptoms, we have taken the first step in correcting them. Tracey Mason – Cert ASK, Dip A&P, MIKHA The Menopause Mentor – tel: 07748 064732

My SPRING CLEANSE by Marja-Leena Toseland

T

his was my first cleanse, in fact I've never even succeeded in sticking to a diet before! I followed the 12 Days cleanse, developed by yoga and meditation teacher Chris James, to see if I could adjust my body and mind to follow a healthier way of eating in such a short timeframe. 12 Days is a really well structured programme that’s easy to fit into a busy working and family life. It’s supported with five vegetarian Bio nutrient supplements, one of which contains psyllium husk that makes you feel full, as well as a menu plan of healthy and tasty recipes with plenty of guidance on healthy eating too. As recommended, I did body brushing every morning too. That helps the lymph system to rid itself of toxins that collect below the skin. The lumpy cellulite seemed to disappear before my eyes.

On the evening of the first day I knew that I hadn’t cut back my caffeine intake enough as I developed a slight headache and a terrible craving for coffee. Luckily that passed after the second day. The cleanse is divided into four three-day stages and the first Preparation Phase eased me nicely into replacing bread, dairy, meat and sugary snacks as well as caffeine and alcohol with plenty of vegetables and fruit, gluten free grains and fresh juices. I had recently bought a juicer which really is a must for this plan. The basic dietary principle for cleansing is to reduce acid forming foods and replace them with simple alkaline ones that require little energy to digest. Toxins increase the level of acidity in the body which can weaken your immune system and interfere with your metabolism and digestion. Days one to six were easy and I didn’t feel hungry or tired. Day 7 was the start of the

three day Power Phase when only juices, light vegetable soups and plenty of water of course were allowed, together with the daily supplements. Not as bad as it sounds. It’s important to have a colon hydrotherapy or irrigation treatment during the cleanse. First time for me and a lot less unpleasant than I had expected. The therapist, Lawin Oswain, at Kingston Natural Health Clinic is very experienced and clearly a passionate and very knowledgeable promoter of colon health. I felt amazing and really light afterwards and the bloating of my stomach had gone. I’m writing this five days after I finished the cleanse and I’m determined to keep to the healthier eating habits I followed during the plan. I feel great and have lost over 4 lbs too!

Mid-life crisis? Time to evolve!

by Nicola Swan

D

o you mostly trust your head or your heart? We have been brought up to trust our intellect and treat our intuition with a degree of suspicion. The proliferation of new technologies is ample evidence of our brilliant minds. Yet we can see that when intellectual genius dominates at the expense of intuitive wisdom, the results can be destructive. Globally we have a system so out of balance it is on the verge of collapse. Interestingly, similar forces apply at the individual level. As a holistic practitioner I see this through my clients. The traditional approaches of plasters and pills have only driven their problems deeper. Their current challenges – stress, anxiety, chronic fatigue and pain are all too familiar. Yet, more revealing are their dreams and aspirations. I ask, ‘What are your irrational desires?’’ Using the word ‘irrational’ lets us off the cultural hook that has us believing, quite early in life, ‘I cant have this or be that, so I may as well forget it.’

This creates a gap – a painful disconnect – between the person we yearn to be and the life reflected in our current circumstances. Much like our beloved planet, we are out of balance. We have reached an evolutionary crisis that is driving us to evolve or perish. This demands that we examine our beliefs. Cited above is just one of the many sub-conscious ‘programs’ that, like a computer virus, invisibly run our lives and play havoc with our potential for health and happiness. Conscious evolution means actively working to release the limiting thoughts and sub-conscious beliefs of the past that impact us now. These are the dense vibrations of fear and lack of security that are holding us back from realising our full potential for joy and fulfilment. That journey necessarily begins when we STOP. Step out of the ‘doing’ and into simply ‘being’. Only in the stillness can we really listen to our heart’s voice. By regularly tuning in to that wisdom we begin to make life-affirming choices which support us. And as we begin to love ourselves in this way, we acquire the resources that will empower us to serve others. And serving others, it turns out, is the most common aspiration of all! Self love, healing and releasing negative patterning are the themes of my forthcoming weekend workshop, ‘Gaia Level 1’ at Heart Twickenham on 4th and 5th July. Labour faced defeat on stage too Political drama at Rose Theatre

avid Hare’s iconic political work, The Absence of War, is a timely postelection insight into the battle of Westminster This searing election play joined the long list of brilliant productions at Rose Theatre Kingston; this time co-produced with Headlong and Sheffield Theatres. A prophetic and incisive study, Hare brilliantly captures an epic, personal struggle against the high-pressured hysteria of the 1992 General Election when Neil Kinnock was the leader of the Labour Party, fighting to break the Conservatives’ run of 12 years in power.

The timing of the play was perfect, just before the recent general 20

election. Although the play is set in 1992, it resonated strongly with the audience as the Labour Party is still facing similar challenges today. George Jones, the Labour Party leader in the play, is charismatic and passionate about his beliefs, but that doesn’t always come across the way the party would like. The heart of the play is the politician’s dilemma of personality versus ideology. The Absence of War is part of Hare’s acclaimed trilogy, which includes Racing Demon and Murmuring Judges, and examines British society at the end of the 20th century. It’s a brilliant glimpse into our political system and remains rel-

evant in questioning what happened to the UK’s left wing movement and who really wins elections; politicians or personalities? George Jones can’t be true to himself and hope to get elected. He’s a self-educated northerner with a love of theatre, whom his party wants to mould into a more polished man to play the game of winning the election whilst staying by his principles. He’s walking the tightrope the whole time; what does he dare to reveal and what needs to be hidden from the electorate?

“The play presents a political universe in which, for all sorts of good reasons, politicians have decided it too dangerous to speak publicly of what they really feel.” David Hare, The Independent 1994.

During a hearing evaluation, your audiologist will conduct a number of tests to determine whether you have a hearing loss and, crucially, if hearing instruments are right for you or not.

Q: What should I do if I think I have a hearing loss? A: Recognising that you may have a hearing loss and deciding to take action is the first important step to better hearing. With the latest hearing aid technology, conversations with friends, an evening out in your favourite restaurant or a night in front of the TV can once again be enjoyed to the full.

HOSPITAL TREATMENT A risky business? Marek Bednarczyk advises

Marek Bednarczyk

In the light of recent reports highlighting problems with hospital care, Marek Bednarczyk suggests prevention is perhaps better than cure. In order to make sure that patients can achieve the best outcome for themselves, it is vital for them to be proactive. To this end, patients and their family members can take a few important steps to help reduce the risk of clinical negligence before any problems arise. 1. Don’t waste any time. It may sound obvious but, where possible, seek medical treatment before you become an emergency patient. 2. Do not suffer in silence. If you are in hospital, make sure you explain your symptoms and full medical history to the doctors and nurses very clearly. If the medics treating you aren’t fully aware of your medical history and current symptoms, it’s much easier for them to make mistakes in diagnosis and treatment. 3. Instruct your relatives to communicate any issues or concerns. Post-operative recovery can be problematic, especially if a patient is unable to talk to doctors and nurses. Family members should, therefore, provide information and/or raise any concerns with hospital staff on behalf of a patient.

4. Do not be afraid to “make a fuss”. Raising genuine concerns in a reasonable way is not the same thing as “making a fuss” over nothing; this is no time to be shy. It’s also a good idea to monitor what happens by keeping a written record or diary. If any problems do arise, this written account may help if you do need to pursue a legal claim later. 5. Listen carefully. Ask nurses and doctors to explain any risks and potential complications in plain English. If you know what to expect, you can inform your doctor and/or other hospital staff about any adverse reactions or other problems straight away, so that they have more time to respond. Of course, the main responsibility for treatment still lies with the clinical staff. If clinical standards fall short and you suffer from avoidable injuries, a specialist clinical negligence lawyer should be contacted without delay. Time is of the essence as there is a threeyear time limit for making claims regarding injuries caused by clinical negligence. Marek Bednarczyk is a partner at law firm Hart Brown, a leading law firm with offices in Wimbledon Village, throughout Surrey and in London. The long tradition of stained glass making lives on in Kingston Darling gets a glimpse onto artist Simone Kay’s world

S

imone opened her studio on the corner of Hawks Road and Villiers Road in Kingston in 1997 and has taught decorative stained glass in Surbiton for nearly three decades. Her work decorates local churches, chapels, public buildings and countless domestic frontages in and around this area and as far afield as Brazil, Poland and Norway. A wide variety of techniques are incorporated in her work, including traditional kiln fired painting and silver stain, from which the term "stained glass" is derived and a process that is over one thousand years old. For the millennium window at St. Anne's Church, Kingston Hill, English mouth-blown glass in the original Victorian colours was used to depict the story of Christ. This very special glass creates a wonderful, sparkling, colourful light as the sun shines through it and it’s believed that bathing in this pure light can heal and balance the body. Simone has also made three windows for the Mayor’s parlour at the Guildhall in Kingston and the most recent, celebrating the Olympics and Kingston’s history, inspired one visitor to commission a tribute panel for her recently deceased father.

her trademark. Having a large collection of antique glass is essential when restoring and repairing windows. Simone is also passionate about water colour painting and can often be seen sat by the river or in Richmond Park sketching. Her paintings also inspire the designs for her windows. Community based projects and interests are close to her heart. She’s recently been helping to run a local cash free economy and organising a gardening project in Tolworth. She can also be found face painting, or embellishing, at the Surbiton Seething Festivals and other events. Simone also has her own monthly radio show on Kingston Green Radio run from Kingston Environment Centre, called “Sim's Green Round-Up”. www.stainedglass-artists.co.uk tel: 020 8287 7743

Another commission is currently hanging in the atrium of Selfridges in Oxford Street to be auctioned for charity. It is a protest piece depicting the way that money is worshipped and banks have become the new churches. Being a stained glass window in the traditional gothic arch shape is ironic in the extreme. The environment has long been very high on Simone’s priority list. Modern double-glazing technology allows her work to be encapsulated inside sealed units to protect against heat loss and she uses reclaimed glass wherever possible. Different textured Victorian clear glass adds sparkle and history to her windows; and that’s become almost darlingmagazine.co.uk | june – aug 2015

ith interest rates still low, and the economy continuing on the up, there couldn’t be a better time to add value to your home. It could be that loft or basement conversion you’ve always dreamed of, an open plan living space or simply using skylights to let the summer sunshine in. Our most popular alterations: • A family room opening out to the garden through bi-fold doors • An additional bedroom, dressing room and en-suite • That new kitchen with work surface aplenty • Heated floors throughout below the wooden lookalike tiles • Natural light beaming into your living area • Creating the inside-outside feeling we all would love. • An open-plan kitchen/diner

The best approach with any new build is to work together very closely at the planning stage so we have a shared vision of what my clients are looking for. It’s this foundation at the very beginning that creates the kind of working relationship you need for the best results. Whatever you have in mind, my team and I can turn your home into a haven. right mojitos and cocktails, farmers' markets overflowing with sumptuous fruits and vibrant green leaves on Wimbledon Common are all signs of summertime. These bright colours are uplifting and are part of our summer trend story, 'Spontaneity’. This summer, spontaneity means being bold and playful with colour. There are lots of ways to invite spontaneity into your home. Decorative accessories such as candles, tea towels, throws and cushions are great ways to splash around some playful colours and patterns. Be bold with our outdoor furniture – go for bright colours and strong patterns that will make a statement.

For those of you looking to introduce bright colour more permanently into your home, consider the kitchen area. Due to its utility, the kitchen is often a space that has a relaxed and casual feel and can easily take some playful colours. Our design team has recently specified a number of fabrics for chairs and occasional seats in a lime and yellow colour way – a fresh, uplifting and youthful colour for a kitchen space. If colour is not quite right for you or your space, classic neutrals and whites within the home are still very much on trend. With a white colour palette, there is always a concern of making the space feel sterile, or of stripping it of its sensuality. By layering textures, such as linen napkins with hand-made porcelain bowls within a monochrome colour palette, your space will still feel sensual whilst maintaining a monochrome, minimalistic style. Our design team has recently been to Milan for Salone del Mobile, the largest furniture fair in the world, and have brought back with them the latest trends and designs for your interiors. Surviving the summer

P

lants will live without being pruned. They will normally survive, though not always thrive, without feed. But the one thing that is a matter of life and death to them is water.

Keep plants watered This is a vital month for ensuring that plants get sufficient water to stop them turning to a crisp. Once they reach a stage of dryness, it’s almost impossible to re-hydrate them, and they could peg out! If you use a hosepipe, then it’s much better to apply a thorough soaking once a week, rather than watering 'little and often’. If you do the latter, the water only reaches the upper layers of soil, and roots are then encouraged to remain near the surface where they are more prone to dry out when the weather gets hot.

and you’ll stop the seed factory developing.

Roses Keep a sharp eye out for pests and diseases, especially aphids, blackspot and mildew. Regular deadheading will encourage repeat flowering, but don't do those varieties grown for the autumn display of hips or you won't get any.

Hanging baskets Before hanging these up, make sure that the wall brackets are strong enough for the task: remember, a fully watered hanging basket can weigh a great deal, and last year’s wall fixing could have rusted and loosened during the winter months. Keep baskets well watered, and if

you’ve forgotten to incorporate swell gel crystals, make a few deep holes in the compost using a pencil, and sprinkle a small pinch of these water retaining granules into each hole.

Pots A plant in a pot is entirely at your mercy on the amount of water and nutrients it can use unlike a plant in the open garden that can send out roots in search of water. And, pots have a horrible habit of drying out very quickly, and are very difficult to rehydrate! Auntie Planty is a Chartered Horticulturist. As Auntie Planty she offers gardening master-classes in your own garden. www.auntieplanty.co.uk

Weed control With most weeds growing actively now, it’s important to keep on top of them otherwise they’ll take over. Hoeing once or twice a week is the best way to keep annual weeds under control, and it’ll also weaken the perennial weeds. If all else fails and you haven’t time to do this, at least remove the flowering head of any weed plant darlingmagazine.co.uk | june – aug 2015

Splice the mainbrace! (Whatever that means)

Landlubber translation: Clamber up 50ft of swinging rigging and inverted ladders onto the first platform. And down again.

H

ow long is the boat?” asked Cathy, a fellow   novice crewman. There was a sharp intake of  breath from all hands on deck.

“She's a ship. Never call her a boat” corrected Ed, an experienced volunteer, and our leader of the White Watch. I hoped, for Cathy’s sake, that flogging for misdemeanours was now banned.

“This floor’s a bit ropey,’’ quipped Cathy tripping over my messy coils as we formed a line for the ‘Up and Over.’ We looked up the 148ft towering masts scraping the clouds. “Oh God. I wish I’d signed up for a submarine trip’ muttered a muscular lad next to me. Feeling my guts sinking faster than the Titanic, I leapt onto the rigging, singing ‘What shall we do with the drunken writer…’. Moving in time to the shanty and imagining Capt'n Hook and his plank below, I reached the top at impressive speed. My ‘reward’? Being selected to climb far higher, walk a tight rope out on the yard arm, and drop the massive sail! But by then I was an ol’ sea dog, loving every ‘Aye Aye, Capt’n' moment of the adventure. Dock at Poole Harbour? No way. “Mutiny, me hearties!! Cast off to Kingston, Jamaica.” Editor’s note: This month’s column was received on a postcard.

Ever since I watched the galleon ship sail across the sky in Peter Pan I had dreamed of being a pirate on the high seas. Now here I was, in Dartmouth Harbour on a 200ft tall ship called Stavros S Niarchos. On boarding we’d been divided into three teams; Red, White and Blue. Now training was in full force. “It’s your lucky day’ Ed had announced. “Why?” I asked expecting a tot of vintage rum, or at least a pet parrot. “Because for the next six days, you’ve got me telling you what to do.” It began in the next six minutes. Doing as Ed told, I pulled this rope, circled that rope, tried to work out which bit of the 9 miles of rigging on board had just hauled up what sail, and panicked when we were told that after mess lunch we would be performing an ‘Up and Over’. 42
