he start of autumn, with the excitement of a new school year and new season's fashion in the shops, always feels like a fresh start. I’m also happy, I must confess, to be able to get on with my jobs and attend my yoga classes again after the long summer break. And what a fabulous summer we’ve had with all the sunshine with great events galore in Kingston. I hope that you are feeling rested and re-energised after your holidays and ready to face the darkening evenings and the bustle of work and school runs. I’m truly impressed with our autumn issue’s cover girl and inspiring woman, Clare Jefferies, who works tirelessly to improve the care that's provided in our local community. Gill Hines and Alison Baverstock share their expert advice on parenting young adults, whom more and more parents find are still living at home in their twenties. Don’t miss finding out what’s inspired Kim Porrelli, the artist behind the town centre mosaics in Kingston; tips for getting your roses winter-ready; how Kate Llewellyn-Waters uses Metabolic Balance and other nutritional programmes to bring help to many conditions, and what Surbiton’s villagey Maple Road has to offer. Let’s not forget that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and your chance to wear pink in support, and if you are feeling up to a physical challenge, join the Women Only Run in Richmond Park. Embrace the new season! We’ll be back on the brink of Christmas. Marja-Leena Toseland Editor | kingston@darlingmagazine.co.uk CONTENTS 5 9 13 15 16 17 19 20 21 23 24 25 26 27 31 33 37 39 40 41 42

Committed to changing care Clare Jefferies strives to improve the quality of lives
P
oor experiences of the care sector drove Clare Jefferies to change the face of caring in Kingston and Wimbledon.
Watching your loved ones die is so hard – breast cancer took my mother and seven months later, Motor Neurone Disease my father, after four years of suffering. It was the toughest time in my life, being a carer, with two small children and a lot of guilt at not having enough time to dedicate to those I loved dearly. It was also very lonely – begging favours and relying on others to help out, trying desperately to make sense of my impending loss, as well as trying to understand the care world, which from all angles looked very broken. My loving parents meant the world to me and suddenly our roles had been reversed and I wasn't ready for this – I definitely didn't know that this chapter of my life would shape the future for me. I grew up near Cobham. My brother and I were adored and cherished by our parents. My mother had two sayings, “ Smile regardless of how you are feeling because the smile will always

win,” and “buy it now and worry about it later.” Both sayings are now my mantra in life, although I'm not too sure how happy my husband is with the latter! When my father was diagnosed with MND and given at the age of 65, just a couple of years to live, his reaction to my tears was, “don't be sad, I'm glad I'm missing the next stage of my life – I'd make a rotten old man.” These words had a profound effect on me and what was to become my life in the care world. It led me to ask what was wrong with old age? Surely these should be the best years of your life? It wasn't long before I understood what he meant.
Three years after they died, an opportunity presented itself to me – a chance to open a Home Instead office locally. I hadn’t ever planned to own or run my own business but to be able to change the face of ageing, was something I couldn't ignore. Four years on, Home Instead provides just the sort of care and support I would have wanted for my parents, delivered by people who have a vocation to make a difference to someone's life focusing on continuity, compassion, empathy, communication and respect, not only for our clients but also our amazing team of continues on page 7 > caregivers.

cont. from p.5 After ensuring the care side was being delivered in the best possible way, I then set about developing ways of changing people's lives, socially, in the community.
With many of my clients living with dementia, I recognised a need for services in the community. A simple question by a daughter about where she could take her mother with Alzheimer's which was safe and not institutionalised, led me to open our Memory Cafe at the Rose Theatre, and a client commenting on her 13 month 'imprisonment' in her own home – meant our one off Afternoon Tea party has been a regular slot on our calendar of events each month at Warren House for the last few years.
mother's crazy plans. The early days of the business were tough as I was very focused on the business – getting the home / work life balance right didn't always go according to plan. I'm still struggling to find enough time in the day for so many amazing people in my life. My boys are sailors, so the weekends are spent down on the south coast. There is nothing
more invigorating than a walk on the beach with the dog. My devoted husband Mike, has supported my venture 100%, and has accepted that dinner might not always be waiting for him when he gets home from work. I have a huge number of balls in the air on any one day, but I have become rather skilled at the art of juggling.
Slowly I am making a dent on an industry that is continually shrouded in bad press and horror stories. Over the last four years, I have learnt to manage a team, encourage development, negotiate complex HR and personnel issues, manage budgets, stay within the guidelines of the Care Quality Commission, as well as being a wife and mother of two small children!! A guide to parenting a young adult by Gill Hines and Alison Baverstock
I
left home for college when I was just 18 and though I mostly returned during holidays I knew that I would never truly live there again. With my first month’s salary I moved into the downstairs of a tiny house with a shared bathroom and an outside loo – a far cry from my comfortable, spacious (and heated) family home. I was impatient to begin life as an independent young adult and make
my own choices. Today there are 3.3 million 20 – 34 year olds living with their parents, excluding those living at home with a partner or a child of their own. And although this is often blamed on house prices, according to the Office for National Statistics, it is young people in high priced London who are least likely to be living at home. So what has changed? Many young people don’t want to lower their standard of living, others are unwilling or unable to pay the high costs of housing but it seems to me there may be other factors to consider. In my 20 years working with families in Kingston and Richmond I have seen considerable changes in the way parents manage their role and view their children. Young people's home lives have become easier, with fewer expectations and responsibilities –
Gill Hines, educator and trainer writes
and considerably more 21st-century comforts. In schools too we are seeing a marked decrease in young people's ability or desire to do everyday things for themselves, to take responsibility for the choices they make that affect others or deal with difficult situations. Our new book ‘Later!’ provides advice for parents sharing a home with young adult children. It offers support as well as providing some tools to help them increase their child's ability (and hopefully desire) to live independently, to pursue education and employment and develop relationships. We also recognise that parents themselves may have good reasons why they carry on providing everything for their children so have included plenty of support and advice for parents on learning to live independently of their children too. We often get feedback that our first two books on parenting – Whatever! and It’s not fair! are both practical guides and feel like ongoing friends. We are very proud that Sandi Toksvig has written the foreword to our new book – and very much hope it will provide the same level of support to all involved.

My fabulous prom night It was worth all the hype!
school life .............
by Elizabeth Plumb
F
rom the first time I stepped through the school gates of Rosebery School in Epsom at the age of 11, the countdown begun to the 26th July 2014. Being at an all girl school the topic of prom was never ending subject, whether that being about the dress, venue or date, the topic was always on the tip of everyone’s tongue. For me the hype of prom only started 4 months before the big event. If you spoke to any other person, the thought of not having the dress yet would put them in the grave. The thrilling event of the dress picking had finally arrived. After Elizabeth and her friends looking beautiful on their special night visiting the same shop twice in London, I settled on a beautiful navy and blue, which was to everyone’s relief. There was blue strapless dress with sparkly pieces across the a photo booth and multiple tables in the room with bust. Next on my list was shoes and a clutch, I was a dance floor and an option to have professional hoping for something white with sparkles to match photos done. the sparkles on my dress. t 16-years-old, Kate Llewellyn-Waters was the youngest person to qualify as a studio instructor with Fitness Wales. Her interest in nutrition was ignited when she became an advanced personal trainer and nutritionist 10 years ago. Since then she’s been advising individuals on weight loss and management, fertility issues, pregnancy and postnatal, eating disorders and female hormonal issues, such as menopause and Metabolic Balance. It was the birth of her daughter, Beatrix, that inspired her to set up her own consultancy in 2013. Her clients range in age from 11 to 70-years-old and can be anyone who is looking to change their lives. Other conditions treated include digestion issues, stress, fatigue, IVF support, recurrent miscarriage, PCOS, endometriosis and fibroids. One of her specialist areas is Metabolic Balance, a unique four-phase, 12 week programme primarily designed for weight loss. Developed in Germany, it uses the laboratory values from your blood analysis to generate a personalised nutritional programme. The plan recommends specific foods that promote a regulated insulin response which, in turn, re-balances hormones and the metabolism resulting in weight loss. There’s no fasting, no meal replacements, no calorie counting or fat-free products. “Although you can lose a substantial amount of weight, it’s ultimately about changing your eating habits for life,” she explains. Sounds like the perfect solution if you want to end dieting once and for all. Not an advocate of quick weight loss, she recommends that you should allow yourself a week for every 2lbs of fat you want to lose. “It’s not about a quick fix,” she insists. For her, success is transforming lives. “I recently treated someone who had been trying to conceive for two years and, through numerous diagnostic tests,
I discovered she had severe progesterone, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, as well as high levels of metal toxicity. After five months of treatment, she fell pregnant.” For now, she’s focused on expanding her clinics and completing an MSc in Nutrition, but in 10 years’ time? “Write a book, complete a second MSc in Dietetics and have my food product sitting on the shelves of leading supermarkets.” The future looks rosy for this ambitious lady. Kate runs clinics in Wimbledon, Kingston, Cobham and London’s Harley Street and is available from 8.30am until 8.00pm. Home visits can be made by request. Introducing St Anthony's new outpatient centre

such heart rate monitors and this will progress as technology becomes more cost effective. As such, more information will be monitored remotely; not only by the individual, but also by their doctors.
he face of public health and healthcare provision in England is changing. Modern technology, an ageing population and an increased focus on public health means that healthcare providers must adapt their practice to remain relevant to the needs of the UK population.
Already there a number of cardiac devices exist which communicate directly with physicians and hospitals via 3G technology thus driving an increased demand for convenience by patients.
With increasing technological capacities and a political push on public health, we are increasingly aware of how to keep our bodies healthy. With this improved knowledge comes the will to do something about it. Already mobile technology is beginning to fill the void with basic health monitoring systems,
As such, the strategies of healthcare providers need to focus around patient convenience. This is likely to mean an increase in day-unit and diagnostic centres, bringing healthcare closer to patient homes.
St. Anthony’s Hospital is starting early, with a new outpatient centre in Raynes Park. In a fully integrated health centre, with NHS GPs, NHS outpatients and a physio pilates studio also in residence, St. Anthony’s now holds 8 outpatient consulting rooms, in the newly built Raynes Park Health Centre. Diagnostics tests are available on-site bringing a higher standard of care closer to surrounding neighbourhoods such as Raynes Park, New Malden, Wimbledon and Kingston. urbiton based artist and illustrator Carl Hoare’s work has been described as truly impressive, complex modern art. Carl grew up on the Isle of Wight. Diagnosed at age six with severe dyslexia, a love of painting and drawing
proved itself to be – as well as a passion, a distraction and a way out from school and academia. Carl came to Kingston to complete a MA course in Illustration at Kingston University after he’d gained a BA Honours degree at the Surrey Institute of Art. As a young artist Carl was moved and influenced by German Expressionism. Over the years however, he has become increasingly interested in British war affiliated artists such as Stanley Spencer, C. R. W. Nevinson and Paul Nash, as well as more contemporary practitioners includ-ing Lucian Freud. Carl is also enthusiastic about Pop Art and Pop Surrealism and illustration.
sept-oct 2014 | darlingmagazine.co.uk
His first exhibition at Jeffrey West in London's Piccadilly attracted two hundred guests including the pop artist legend Sir Peter Blake who after examining the paintings on show remarked "You like all the same artists I like". Carl gained further fame by receiving a second prize from Boris Johnson for ‘Winston's Great Escape’ – a pen and ink with watercolour and digital finish at the 2013 Pentland Winston Churchill Design Competition. Carl will be exhibiting next at The Real Draw at the Marburae Gallery, in Macclesfield, Cheshire from September 4th for one month.

The artist behind Kingston's mosaic walls
I
met Kim Porrelli at her well hidden and spacious studio in Park Road. I immediately recognised some of the tall panels of mosaic art propped against the wall from been displayed on the walls of what is now Pret A Manger, now waiting for planning permission to be installed at the Rose Theatre. Kim fell into the art world and mosaics by volunteering on a large community mosaic project for Kingston Station more than 10 years ago. She enjoyed working with community groups and children so much that she decided to re-train as a Mosaic Artist and Teacher. She also attended community project courses which led to her first public project of leading a group of youths doing community service creating a mosaic sign for Merton Peace Garden. They felt such pride for their achievements that it changed many of their attitudes towards treating public property.
by Marja-Leena Toseland
Many of the public works are initiated in order to regenerate an area or a building that’s been targeted by graffiti 'artists'. Art changes attitudes, especially when communities come together to improve their environment. Problems like graffiti and vandalism disappear from these areas. The regeneration project Kim was recently commissioned to do by the Friends of Ham Village Green is a great example of how to turn a unsightly graffiti wall into a beautiful work of art for everyone to enjoy. Another great public project is the ongoing work at Kingsnympton Estate in Kingston where the residents have been very involved from the conceptualisation to actually making the final designs. It will be wonderful, including panels depicting the history of the estate, scenes from Richmond Park ,as well as children’s own panels with their handprints and drawings and even personalised tiles created by the residents. A memorial for PC Andrew Duncan, who was tragically killed whilst on duty in Croydon last September, is an emotional but a wonderful piece Kim is working on with the West Moseley Scouts where Andrew was a driving force for many years.
Kim has worked with many different groups such as a multicultural women’s group (above); young people not in education, employment or training (NEETS); dementia sufferers; adults and children with special needs and an international artists group changing the urban landscape of Santiago in Chile. She’s also in great demand for her workshops in schools all around London. She mentioned one of her favourite school works being a prayer garden she created with the children for a Catholic school in Marylebone. Its on the roof of a 7-floor building! For information about Kim’s classes for adults and more please visit www.kimporelli. co.uk

Helping your child
BUY A PROPERTY
I
t is unfortunate that in this day and age our children are facing monumental difficulties in getting on that first rung of the property ladder. So, unsurprisingly it is increasingly common they look towards the “Bank of Mum and Dad” for further financial assistance. As a parent you should consider whether any financial help you provide is a gift or a protected loan. With either option tax implications can arise and caution must be exercised. If your child has been successful in obtaining a mortgage then full details of the circumstances of the gift/loan must be given to the lender. Children purchasing with a partner If your child buys with a partner, the need to protect the monies is even greater as there is the risk a share of the gift/loan to the child could be forfeited to the co-owner. It would be prudent to have a Deed of Trust registered against the title of the property setting out the shared proportions each co-owner is to have, together with a provision confirming the loan/gift is to be in favour of the child.
circumstances where a non-owning partner will be deemed to have a beneficial interest in the property due to contributions they have made or their intention to share the ownership of the property in the future. To protect everyone’s interests your child should consider entering a cohabitation agreement. The law in this area is disjointed and complex, and these cases will be time consuming and expensive to resolve. It is therefore particularly important to ensure that you deal with matters properly at the outset.
The court has made it clear that where a home is bought in joint names, without any express declaration of interest detailing entitlement and share proportions, the starting point is that the property is owned equally.
If you would like to discuss any of the issues mentioned above then please do not hesitate to contact one of the team; Rachel Stewart, (residential property), Tim Whitney (family – cohabitation or wealth protection) or Kieran Bowe (wills and tax planning).

Art therapy in focus Creativity – the language of emotion
A
rt Therapy is a psychotheraputic discipline that uses art making as the central form of communication, it allows the client to use different art making mediums to capture their thoughts in a safe and supporting environment. As a charity worker and artist in the Kingston and
Surbiton area I have been using art within my befriending and mentoring relationships for many years and have always seen transformative results. In a Kingston primary school, one child's life was transformed: Andrew (5) suddenly became very distressed at school and so, was encouraged to paint regularly. Two months in, Andrew painted his family and when asked why his daddy was so far away from himself, he started to cry - he explained that his daddy had left home and moved away. Andrew was too young to fully under-

stand the loss and sadness he was feeling, through his art a channel for communication was created. Whilst we celebrate the happier feelings in life, many of us hide our sad or painful emotions. Often we are unaware of how those emotions may effect us, yet something as simple as creativity can bring to our attention a greater awareness of ourselves. Stairway to heaven Reflexology – more than a foot massage

I
f you thought that reflexology was a fancy name for a foot massage, then you‘ve never had the pleasure of a session with Natural Nurse Annie Watts. Offering a unique service, I call it ‘Being Annie’d’. The experience starts with knocking on her Victorian front door in North Kingston and entering a world of scents, candles and sights that instantly lift your senses. Her healing room at the top of the stairs is colourful and exotic, embellished with little tokens and thank you cards from a multitude of grateful clients. Like myself, they would have found out about Annie the best way – by word of mouth. Wise, warm and generous by nature, Annie’s background explains a lot. Originally from India she has been a trained nurse and complementary therapist working in hospices and hospitals for many years. Luckily for me, she now lives just around the corner – but how I wish I’d known about her years ago. It would be wrong of me to describe what you should expect, because her treatments are truly holistic, touching mind, body and soul. Stressed from work? Exhausted from play? Heartache? Bereavement? Each session is individually tailored to meet your specific needs at the time and on the day you see her. Whatever happens, you know the basics involve delicious smelling oils and magically soothing hands. Her real talent is helping you with your issues using a variety of ways. It might involve wise words, borrowed books from her library, talismans, affirmations or changes to nutrition. Either way, I never fail to leave her house in a cloud of floaty wellbeing.
Reflexologist Annie Watts at work
The thing I really admire about Annie is how she sometimes goes well over my treatment time if and when needed. She genuinely cares. I call her healing room my secret sanctuary. The reason I’m sharing the news? I’m being loving and giving – trying to follow Annie’s example. Specialty: mothers and children, elderly (home visits), bereavement Contact by email: annie@naturalnurse.plus.com £40 first session, £35 thereafter. Concessions on discussion.

New Malden man swims the Channel for Momentum, the children's cancer charity that supported him
T
udor Morris, 22, from New Malden, has achieved the incredible challenge of swimming the English Channel raising over £16,000 for Momentum, the local children’s charity. The solo crossing on 27 July took Tudor 15 hours and 53 minutes, but prior to that, months of training and he says: “more mental grit and determination than I have ever had to give in one day”. Tudor, whose father is the owner of Tudor Williams department store in New Malden, took on the challenge after he was supported by Momentum as a child. He contracted leukaemia at the age of 13 and spent two years fighting the cancer which was thought to be terminal.
But there was another poignant reason behind Tudor’s challenge … it was in remembrance of his mother who tragically died from cancer when he was just 8 years old. Swimming the channel is considered to be the ultimate test of endurance, strength and stamina. More people have climbed Mt. Everest than have swum the channel. Tudor endured freezing temperatures, floating debris, sewage, jellyfish and 500 ton freight cargo boats on his challenge. He was stung by jellyfish on his ear, neck, shoulder and ankle!
every movement with the build-up of lactic acid in my muscles. I had to picture my mother swimming next to me and keeping me going … that was the only thing that got me through it in the end.”
Tudor said: “The last three hours were so hard. My lungs were on fire, I was wheezing, and I was cramping with

YOUR BODY, YOUR VOICE Empowered living through singing and yoga by Hannah Rose

ovement and voice belong to everybody. However some people carry negative beliefs that stop them enjoying their bodies and voices. ‘I can’t sing. I’m tone deaf. I’m too fat, old, thin, stiff, lazy, clumsy, inexperienced...’ Sound familiar? When limiting beliefs are discarded, and judgement replaced with compassion, respect and encouragement, anything is possible. Energy previously used for self-criticism, becomes available for exploration, progress, enjoyment and empowerment. Kripalu Yoga and the Natural Voice movement support this ethos. edge everyone’s right to their voice, and recognise the physical nature of singing. ‘Kripalu’ is Sanskrit for ‘compassion.’ Kripalu Yoga classes welcome each body, mind and spirit as they are. Voice and Yoga are intrinsically linked, and complementary. Yoga practice increases self-awareness, reduces physical and emotional tensions that cause vocal restriction, assists postural change, and strengthens the muscles that support healthy, sustainable, expressive vocal use. Anything affecting the body, affects the voice. Voicing serves yogic aims in return. It develops breath awareness and control, increases prana (energy), stimulates chakras (energy centres), and releases emotions. Voicing promotes calm, mental focus, ananda (bliss) and svadhyaya (self-study). It is important for bhakti (communion with the Divine), particularly via chant, mantra and kirtan. Voice can assist seva (selfless service), compassionate communication, and authentic expression. Singing in groups creates sangha (community), and connects individual and universal consciousness. Whoever you are, your body and voice are yours to enjoy. As you read this, you can hum, sigh, dance, sing, stretch... Investigate classes/workshops that interest you – and go! Potential benefits include improved physical and mental health, deeper connection with self and others, fun, restoration, transformation and pleasure! fter a relaxing summer, September and October are about getting back in the thick of it – both at work and at play. This time of year brings us Paris Design Week closely followed by London Design Festival. So in the world of design it’s hectic. Since I’m fortunate to be able to visit both events, I can’t wait to bring back the most beautiful products to your home-from-home in Raynes Park, absolute abode. You might even spot some of our range in magazines or online. But here you get a chance to see and touch them. September’s also the time when fabric and wallpaper houses launch their new collections, and we’ll choose the most fabulous to showcase in store. What we’re already seeing this Autumn are monochrome colourways, geometric forms and bold, bold statements. Dark, luxurious interiors are trending. And if, like me, you like to entertain as the nights grow longer, now’s the time to get cracking. Whatever the time of year, if you’re ordering furniture from around the world, allow eight to ten weeks for delivery. Make your extended space work cleverly by
ZONING
W
e see a lot of architects’ and designers’ drawings, estate agents’ details as well as photos and sketches from our customers. They are generally helpful for understanding the amount of space that will be achieved by extending a property. The following tips help when embarking on a project – ideally before too much building has started! SPACE. The furniture you want to use (or buy) should fit well in your new space. Consider the flow of the room. Is a corner or a chaise unit the most practical solution or would you rather use the corner space differently? Would a footstool be more versatile? Think about how it may look from different angles, particularly important if you will see the back and/or sides in an open plan layout. Stand in the garden if it is to be seen from outside. SIZE. If possible measure your proposed furniture out, either on a scale drawing or using newspaper (or cardboard boxes for a 3D effect) on the floor. Too big and it will dominate. Too small and it may look ‘lost’.
USE. Are you creating a family room within a kitchen/diner? If so, you may want to consider something more compact and firm for the seating than if you were creating a TV area, where lounging is desired. Who will use the furniture? Consider older and less mobile users. They may need higher, firmer seats that they can get in and out of. EASE. Do you want to move furniture around? Consider modular units. Will having pieces that swivel help you avoid everything facing the TV? Consider loveseats or snugglers as well as swivel chairs. Will seating need to double up for sleeping? A sofa bed, corner or chaise units are all great choices.
Do you need additional storage? A clutterbox/ storage table or footstool requires no extra space. FABRIC/LEATHER. Whatever you choose, consider the amount of light in the room. You will probably be surprised at how quickly everything fades when you add larger widows, even when the sun doesn’t shine on you directly. Leather or ‘faux’ leathers are practical in the kitchen/diner and if you have children and pets. STYLING. Don’t be afraid to juxtapose old and new. Don’t throw everything out just because its old – it may be worth recovering or reupholstering a comfortable old sofa or chair. Look online at sites such as Pinterest and Houzz for ideas. There’s a huge amount of choice out there! If you are looking for affordable quality upholstery, with plenty of choice, Seriously Sofas will be delighted to offer you interested, expert advice and assistance. Dealing with rose blackspot
I
t’s at this time of year when the nation’s favourite plant – the rose – starts to wind down once more for the winter. Sad this may be, but now is a very good time to deal with rose blackspot, breaking the life cycle of the disease, to ensure your roses stay in better shape for the following year.
The problem Rose blackspot is extremely common and widespread fungal disease on most rose cultivars as well as on wild roses. However, there are some cultivars that are partially resistant. It’s a disease that’s allegedly more common in the South West of England and in Wales than in other industrialised areas of the country, due more to increased levels of atmospheric sulphur than post code discrimination. The disease thrives in warm, moist conditions, and most early attacks come from those spores that have spent the winter in uncleared plant debris or in dormant buds. You’ll know if your plant has it if its leaves look anything like that in the adjacent photograph.
The remedy You’ll go a long way in breaking the life cycle of this disease if you gather up the fallen leaves around the base of the plant. During the season, it’s important to pick off the worst affected leaves
and dispose of them very carefully. Place them in a plastic bag and tie the top tightly. Leave the bag in the hot sun for a few days, and then put them into the dustbin or burn them. Next year, begin a regular spraying programme with a product such as RoseClear Ultra ready to use. Use the spray as insurance against attack rather than as first aid when the problem has arisen..
Added insurance Growing garlic or onions with roses is said to help deter black spot, though there's no scientific evidence that it actually works! I have a recipe for a garlic wash, which you are welcome to try – just email me. But there is also no doubt that a plant that is well fed and watered is able to better withstand the onslaught of any fungal attack. © 2014 Valerie McBride-Munro Valerie offers garden problem solving sessions in your own garden. North-South bid confidently to their 4♠ game contract and West led top-of-a-sequence K♥. East can deduce that West holdsKQ♥ and probably J♥. These cards, together with East’s two aces, seem to account to for all the high cards which East-West hold. East must plan to make four tricks to defeat the contract, but what can they be? Two hearts tricks and A♦ are easy to make but, for a fourth trick, East will need to trump a diamond. How can that be achieved before declarer draws trumps? The solution is entirely in East’s hands and is really rather beautiful: East overtakes West’s K♥ with her A♥ and cashes A♦. She then returns a heart to West. On winning, West must conclude that for East to play her A♦ is the action either of a mad-woman, or of a player with only one diamond. Assuming that she trusts her partner, West therefore plays another diamond and East trumps. Contract defeated. aceoftrumps.com 14darlingmagazine.co.uk june–july 2014 | darlingmagazine.co.uk | sept–oct 2014 41

cutting the fringe By Lyndsay Russell
I
nvited by local poets and musicians of The Word Café to join in The Edinburgh Festival, I could only answer: “Och Aye!”
Readers of my last column will realise that I have a bucket list the size of an industrial skip, and ‘Doing the Fringe’ was a distant dream up there with a solo at The Royal Ballet. So imagine my joy when producer/ performer Julie Mullen, a tornado of energy and beauty (yes, I want to be in her next show too), gave me the ‘guest spot’ half an hour ago. So, I write this column fresh off the stage! As I stood up to read my especially penned poem: ‘Mid Life Crisis’ in the prestigious 60 seat Fringe venue Bunker One, I noticed a critic reach for his pen. ‘Russell Bombs’ crossed my mind as an irresistible sub-head, causing a near stumble as I read the first line. Imagine my relief when I reached the end of the third page, and the applause rang loud in my ears (okay, okay. It was a bunker, it echoed). ‘Tomorrow, we’ve got Liz Lochhead, Scotland’s Poet Laureate in the guest spot, instead of you –
take these.’ said Julie handing me flyers to shove in peoples’ faces. I was both flattered I’d ever been asked to perform, and chastened in one sentence. Oh, how the mighty fall. Flyer-ing is all part of The Fringe experience - with 3,000 shows competing, it’s a haggis eat haggis world. All involved in a show are expected to promote the production or live with an audience of three. Indeed, by the time you’ve walked The Royal Mile, visitors will have been tossed enough leaflets to make a paper maché Caber. And the choice is so eclectic. Yesterday, I saw a show on a travelling bus with performing passengers, the utterly epic Edinburgh Tattoo, then stand-up comedy in an inflatable, purple upturned cow tent. There’s also a dark side that cast members have been egging each other to experience. I recently survived The Generation of Z – a midnight zombie run (photo above), and now we’re off to an underground vault performance in historic Mary King’s Close. That means it’s time for a wee dram of Scotch Courage. Oh, just read the title of the play is Death And Decay. Sounds like the title of my next poem…
The Word Café – a mouth-watering menu of comedy, poetry and music – Edinburgh Fringe – Look out for the Teddington show on return.
