Message from the President Scott Smith

Best General Slide Overall Camera House trophy Peter Vernon Quenter (Subject Window light)

Welcome to all returning members, with an especially warm welcome to new members that have joined us (13 at latest count) in the first few weeks of this season, our 116th. As we progress into the new season, we are now enjoying the use of a new laptop, purchased to replace the existing desktop computer that we have used for the last few years. This new equipment not only allows us to increase the maximum size of digital images for competitions and general submission events, but displays in HD. Do you feel the urge to take a few photos and are tired of the same old places? Be sure to check out the Photo Spots under Information on the CCO website. Locations are arranged generally from west to east, are usually day-trips and are listings added to as locations are discovered. There is contact information to pass on locations to the coordinator. The executive is looking forward to provide interesting and stimulating programs throughout the year. To that end, if you have any ideas or suggestions, please feel free to bring them to the attention of myself or of any member of the executive.

Competition Topics 2010-2011 Slides: On Reflection – Look-up – Bodies in motion – O Canada – Nature. Colour prints: Shades of colour – Too much of a good thing – At the game – I saw it on Bank Street – Portraits. B&W prints: Straight and narrow – Three's a crowd – Powerful – Pointy Portraits.

October 2010

New Members: Stephen Hui I have been photographing since I was a teenager, mostly of events of my High School. I stopped taking photos after I moved to Canada for almost ten years. A few years ago, I picked up photography again due to the digital age. Nowadays, I enjoy landscape and family photos the most, and I still do some event photography for my son's Saturday School. I'm a Nikon user since day one, so my primary camera is Nikon D700 with 28-70mm AF-S, 70-200mm AF-S lens and some other prime lenses. Dinah Showman is the family's photographer. She says: I'm more interested in photographing people than places, but since I plan to do a little travel writing, places have become more important subjects than they used to be. My background is in advertising copy writing, personnel and interior decoration. I love to cook and entertain and to travel, enjoy speaking French, some Spanish . . . . I've had the good fortune to join my husband on overseas diplomatic assignments to Buenos Aires, Paris and Bonn. My camera is a Canon Xsi - and I don't as yet use it to its full potential! arts&architecture is accepting submissions for a group show this November. The call to photographers is open to novice, emerging and established photographers; youth submissions will be accepted as well! There is no theme; we’re looking for any and all types of photography. The cost of admission is the price of a frame of your choosing (see options below) in which you will display your photo. If your photo doesn’t sell, the frame is yours to keep! The show is scheduled for November 25 - 28, with a vernissage on Thursday, November 25th from 7 – 10 pm. Pieces sold during the show will be taken home immediately by the buyer and replaced with new work to keep things interesting. The rules: -Images must be submitted in a frame purchased from the list below -Images can be film or digital (including cell phone photography!) -The image does not have to be strictly photography, but must contain photography as one of the media used -Participants may enter as many framed images as they choose -Finished pieces must be dropped off no later than Sunday, November 21 at 5:00 pm -Unsold pieces must be picked up no later than Sunday, December 19 at 5:00 pm -Pieces must be priced within the price range given for each frame size (see chart below) -When dropping off your frame(s) you will be asked to fill out a form with your name, the title, the medium and the price of your work -The gallery will accept payment for any sold pieces and the artist will be paid by cheque for 100% of the pre-tax sale; the gallery will not be taking any commission! So spread the word to photographers, to your friends who may be looking for great, affordable gifts during the holiday season and to anyone who’s looking for a fun night of art!
