THE DIFFERENT “VIEW” Los Angeles Maker - Space design Instructor: Rob Ley Intro : This project intends to transfer the traditional self-enclosure, dusky, and “boring”man’s cave into an open, bright , and interesting exhibiting space. In addition, this building will become a piece of urban landscape , which can provide activity and parking space for the community.

BUILDING

BUILDING + LANDSCAPE

THE “DIFFERENT” VIEW (Los Angeles Makerspace Design

This design focuses on providing unique views of makerspace to the public and users. Makerspace, as people known, usually is a building which are consisted of by several self - close, professional, and dim rooms. People outside makespace don’t have the will and chance to figure out what happens inside. However, in this design, I hope to break these barriers, and to show the interesting side to the public. That’s why this building is flatten on the site, so people can easily “go into” and “look into” the working space below. In addition, existing site is a parking structure. We all know that parking shortage is always a problem for Little Tokyo area. I decided to keep the parking function, and created an interesting shortcut to the street level. Furthermore, people whatever tourists heading to Little Tokyo, workers waiting for buses, or people passing by, will have a chance to see how people works with machines down below with the skylights on the roof.

Site info: Site is located at Little Tokyo, Downtown LA, and it is surrounded by various stores, shops and resturants. Visitors and normal workers will be the majority of this area.

MODULAR RESIDENCE (Residential Quarter design) (China) Project location: WuHan, China Date: March / 2014 Duration: 10 Weeks Class: 3rd-year Studio Designer: Dong He Instructor: Xu Wang In this design, The basic form is a single cube. Then I transform the module into other architectural spaces by scaling, overlaying, rotating, combing, and dividing . Architectural spaces can be a single module, or a group of modules. The purpose of this deisgn is to rebuild friendly relationships between neighborhoods. In modern China, More and more residential buildings were built like Le Corbusier's Plan Voisin in Paris. Inside lliving machines, peopel has limited connections and social networks. To solve this problems, I tried to use passive and positive design methods, which means creating net-working space or induce people to do net-working by themselves.

ABOVE STREET LEVEL (Commercial Promenade design ) Project location: ShaPingBa, ChongQing, China Date: Novermber / 2013 Duration: 10 Weeks Class: 3rd-year studio Designer: Dong He, Zhiruo Ma Instructor: Xu Wang This design mainly focus on solving existing problems. The slope of existing site is very big, which it not easy to put building on. The second problem is the existing heavy traffic. To solve these two problems, we lift the whole “promenade” up, and use escalators to connect street level and first level. We believed that escalators will eliminate the felling of hight difference. In addition, traffic will not be disturbed by the exist of promenade. The height we provide for exisiting transportation are 15’ will higher enough to let small trucks through. For the still transportation, we designed both motocycle and bicycle parking. The parking space will also be provided to surrounding neighborhoods. In the building form design, we didn’t follow exisiting urban fabric. We use curve forms which is better for people walking or browsing.

MODULAR

& SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE

Instructor : Yu Hong Team member : Dong He, Peng Ju, Shuai Jiang, Yu Han

In this competition, our team intent to find an universal sustainable building form by using modular design methods. We believe that sustainable building, or green building can be more independent and free by combining posive design. This research focuses on natural ventilation and lighting through a lift-time period of architecture.

REVIT _ ADAPTIVE COMPONMENT

DYNAMO_ SOLAR DIRECTION FACADE

Wadden sea visitor center is designed by holzer kobler. Based on to architecture drawings on internet, I re-drawed this building from site to interior finish in Revit.

Then, I added a pannel which is made of adaptive componment to the north side of the visitor center. Designers can change the size, and number of the componment.

In this project, the facade will change its openings’ size by following the sun direction. The componment will reduce its opening when the facade faces the sun vertically. On the other hand, the side can’t get enough sun light will have a bigger opening.

This project is a bridge finished in Dynamo Studio.

DYNAMO_ SOLAR + ADAPTIVE COMPONMENT

DYNAMO_ LADDY BUG PLUGIN

This the adaptive componment, whcih consists the facade.

This project is a research about Dynamo plug-ins. I tried two plug-ins, which are Rhynamo and Laddybug. With these two plug-ins, I can build model in rhino, and bring the model to dynamo. In addition, laddybug can run interior/exterior lighting test.

REVIT _ LIGHTNESS

Once I build Wadden sea visitor center in revit, I can add interior /exterior light to RCP plan, and render the lux map in cloud rendering.

REVIT_ PARAMETRIC ADAPTIVE COMPONMENT

This is the adaptive componment in the pannel above. Designers can change all the details by changing type parametrics.
