have been thinking a lot about you and the impact the statewide closure of schools has had on the Class of 2020. While COVID-19 has closed schools across the country, no group of students has been impacted more than you, our high school seniors. I know it is disappointing and confusing, as this is not how the last three months of your senior year was supposed to go. You’re missing out on hanging out with friends and dreaming about one last summer before you head in different directions. It’s natural that you may be feeling sad, as this situation has certainly created a sense of loss. COVID-19 will truly be a historical event. However, I am hopeful this difficult and unfortunate situation will not keep you from pursuing what you are meant to be in the bigger picture of life. The American educator and reformer, Booker T. Washington, said, “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.” I have seen your strength, ingenuity and ability to overcome challenges and move forward. The Class of 2020 is strong and resilient. I know you will see that this unfortunate situation can make you more prepared for the amazing opportunities the future holds for you. I am proud of your dedication, compassion for others and high level of responsibility during these last four years of high school. I admire your ability to face adversity and keep moving forward. While it may not be the end of the senior year you had dreamed of, it will be your senior year — unique among your peers — and you will reap the rewards. As you move forward, know that GPS will always be here for you. If you need help or support, please reach out to us because we are all in this together. My best wishes to the Class of 2020 and may you always be known as the resilient survivors of COVID-19.
Sincerely, Linda Van Houten Greenville Public Schools Superintendent

Greenville To my class of 2020,

arch 13th. A day that we didn’t realize would cut our journey so short. The day that made us step into our future a little too soon. We all thought it would be a relaxing two weeks followed by our senior year spring break — a warm vacation or time spent at homecoming, back to senior tea, prom, decision day, senior mystery trip, honors week, swing out and graduation. For the students who had a spring sport or performance they were dying to partake, it’s hard to lose something so dear to you as so many stories are left untold. The despondency and frustration are reasonable, but when you get to go out on stage or the field again, don’t take those moments for granted. Life will go on, someday, sports will resume, performances will continue to shine, your passion will never fade. Our opportunities were endless, and though this unfortunate global event has taken away many of our
lasts, there are still so many opportunities and firsts to look forward to. Although it’s quite difficult to deal with the circumstances at hand, as we look back at the memories of high school, I hope we take a step back and appreciate all that we were able to accomplish as a class. Coming together to watch our school’s teams, dancing the night away at Homecoming and Snowcoming, and making memories each day. Even though we can’t get back the traditional experiences we missed as a part of our senior year, we’ve learned to adapt and cherish the new memories. I know, as a class, we will continue on with greater enthusiasm and drive like never before, as the hardships and struggles we experienced helped us grow into the stronger individuals we are today. So here’s to our class of 2020. The unconventional class, facing an unconventional ending but continuing
to strive toward the future, despite the misfortunes. Continuing to do the utmost and only looking ahead, constantly learning from our past, but never letting it define who we are. There will never be another class of 2020. It’s our special group that gets our own, unique ending. I understand we might not be able to see our friends soon nor will we get to walk across the stage, but the special memories we’ve made and will continue to make are what makes our class the Class of Rachel Doyle 2020. s Ionia’s 150th graduating class, our Senior Class of 2020 is indeed a special one. During their four years at Ionia High School (IHS), they have led our music programs as they earned numerous Division I ratings and our athletic teams as they earned league and district championships. Our Senior Class of 2020 has collaborated with staff and our business partners to create our GRIT mantra, our FANUC Robot course, Digital Design Technology Course, Personal Finance course, and our STEAM Capstone Course wherein they designed our firstever IHS identity standards website and booklet. They have helped create and lead our annual Veterans Day Ceremony, which honors our local veterans, past and present. Our Senior Class of 2020 has selflessly given their time and energy to help those in need. They have served our community by volunteering with Ionia Youth Athletic Camps, the Red Cross, the Ionia County Animal Shelter, IM Kids, Green Acres Assisted Living, the Lions Club, Toys for Tots, Treasures for Troops, Operation Christmas, Relay For Life, Community Awareness Purple Week, the Ionia Soup Kitchen, the Ionia Rotary, Adopt-A-Highway, the Shop with a Hero initiative, the Ionia Community Library, the Ionia Community Theatre, the Ionia Christian Service Center, and by reading to and mentoring our elementary students. They have also raised finances and donated to the Relief After Violent Encounters (RAVE) organization and Ionia’s Soaring Above Teen Center. We are inspired and grateful for all that our Senior Class of 2020 has accomplished. We know that they will continue to positively impact our community and beyond.

any events mark the progression of life: birthdays, baptisms, first days of school, last days of school, graduations, marriages and funerals. All of these are celebrations of different stages of our growth, joyful pauses to stop and smell the roses, reconnect with loved ones, and reminisce. The Class of 2020 finds itself with an abnormally long time to stop and reflect on where we are personally and as a community. This being the end of our high school days, many of us are thinking about all the things we will miss, or perhaps are missing now. The end of senior year is generally regarded as that glorious high note at the end of a grand symphony. We try to finish things off and give ourselves some sort of closure, whether that be enjoying class with our favorite teachers, playing in that big game, participating in that much-anticipated performance, or having a big night out with our boisterous gang of friends. Looking at our current predicament with this in mind, anxiously sitting at home is a rather unsatisfying way to end high school. Maybe the most
difficult part of having to miss many of our spring events has been being separated from those we care about (and possibly seeing too much of some people). Often we get caught up in the drama and the hustle and bustle of school, blindly pursuing goals that we think will make us happy and missing out on what we already have. The nationwide shutdown has provided us with a litmus test for our priorities. When all the distractions are gone, the only thing left is the bare naked truth: the most important things in our lives are the people with whom we share them. No pleasant memory or achievement of scholarship, athletics, or social status can replace them, and that is ultimately why we are all hiding at home, for their protection. One good thing about this pandemic has been providing some much-needed perspective. Traditionally at graduation time, we share what we are looking forward to, plans we have made, dreams we are chasing. Personally, I am looking forward to telling my kids about this someday. I will tell them how easy they have it compared to how I did and attempt to guilt them into taking the garbage out
like they are supposed to. “You whippersnappers don’t know what true hardship is like. Back in my day, toilet paper was considered a luxury. If somebody TP-ed your house, you tracked them down and hugged them.” I will also tell them how we persevered, how we all sacrificed to overcome this challenge, and how we remade the world after it was done. I will teach my children to hold onto the people in their lives because they are the ones who will be there for them through thick and thin, hell and high water. We may not get a prom this year, or a graduation ceremony, or an open house, but this milestone in our lives will still be marked as memorably as any other, and this will certainly be a year Ben Toaz we never forget.
