WELCOME TO AMERICA’S NEXT CHAPTER: IS THERE A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION? Thank you for joining us today for what we believe will be a thought-provoking conversation about the future promise of America. Today’s event is about your children’s children and the consequences of our current government’s actions on their lives. I genuinely hope that our nationally broadcast conversation with some of the country’s most prominent thinkers will encourage you to consider how you can become a “change agent” to help make America better. Some believe that America has blown numerous opportunities over the past decade to be greater. America has not taken the lead on a vast cooperative effort domestically or internationally to combat terrorism and lay the groundwork for a more peaceful world. America has not secured our best talent to rebuild historic cities with major renovations, and America has not as yet corrected, by drastic means if necessary, the faults in our economic system. The questions are easy: How does each American do his or her part to help us escape the reliance on fossil fuels? Are we becoming more and more accustomed to a sense of helplessness, i.e., Katrina and the Gulf oil spill? How do we rebuild cities with empty homes and no jobs? When does economic recovery really happen? Have we become a nation that is good at destroying things, i.e., school programs, health services, libraries—and the salaries that go with them—as states and cities face their worst cash squeeze since the Great Depression? The answers, like democracy, are hard. We have some work to do, my friends, and our journey to a brighter future begins now. We hope that today’s conversation will provide the information you need to wrestle with and evoke change. Thank you for joining us. Here’s to a day full of enlightenment, encouragement, and empowerment for us all. Keep the Faith,

Tavis Smiley
