Communal hand sanitisers promote over-consumption: study

People are likely to use more hand sanitiser than they need when sharing a dispenser with strangers, according to a recent study.

And many of us appear to believe that a communal product will be less effective than a sanitiser bottle that we share with friends.

These were the conclusions reached in a study published in the Journal of Marketing Research. It revealed that consumers tend to overuse shared sanitisers when they are anonymously placed in a public area.

Marketing professor at the University of California Riverside Thomas Kramer and his co-

authors looked at people’s behaviour when confronted with products such as hand sanitiser dispensers at gyms, campuses and libraries, as well as shampoo and body washes housed in containers in hotel en suite showers.

Less efficacious

“Most of the studies show that people believe the product is less efficacious, meaning it doesn’t work as well, when they share it with strangers rather than friends,” said Kramer. “Then in some studies, it shows that it actually leads them to use more to make up for that perceived low efficacy.”

The research looked at various means of reducing the overuse

of hand sanitisers. “One way to reduce wasteful use is by making consumers think they’re not sharing with strangers, but with family or friends,” said Kramer. “The second way is by increasing a person’s

identification with the product, even when it is shared out.”

He said branding sanitiser dispensers with a company or college logo could help to discourage people from using too much.

The Professional division of Freudenberg Home and Cleaning Solutions, which owns the Vileda Professional brand, has acquired fellow cleaning tools and systems specialist Vermop.

This includes the Hefter Cleantech cleaning machines brand which Vermop acquired in 2020. Both businesses are based in Germany.

Brand integration

For now Vermop, which has 330 employees, will continue to operate as usual and the integration of its brands will be implemented over the coming year.

Workers seek deeper relationship with their workplace - ISS study

Workers increasingly view their work as more than just a source of income, as they seek a deeper relationship with their workplace, a new ISS public opinion survey has found.

The company says the survey highlights the opportunity for employers and HR professionals to improve the social contract with employees and foster a greater sense of workplace belonging.

The survey of 4,500 workers across the five countriesconducted by Opinium - found that while pay is still the main factor for the majority (96 per cent) of respondents as a reason for why they value their job, more than a third (39 per cent) of respondents think their workplace is ‘mostly’ or ‘only’ important for other reasons than just the pay.

Sense of purpose

When delving deeper into these ‘other reasons’, 83 per cent of the respondents pointed to ‘a sense of purpose’ as the most important reason for why they go to work. This is closely followed by ‘the general culture of the workplace’ (78 per cent), while ‘opportunities to develop and progress my career’ was ranked somewhat lower (67 per cent).

More than a quarter (26 per cent) of the respondents also cited that, if they had the choice, they would prefer a ‘somewhat’ or ‘much’ deeper relationship with their workplace. This figure is even higher for young people, aged between 18 and 34 (36 per cent).

Shift in motivation

The respondents were also asked what ‘a sense of belonging’ at the workplace means to them. Over half (59 per cent) associated this with ‘a place where I feel respected and am treated fairly’, whereas 42 per cent pointed to ‘a place where I perform well’, and 36 per cent mentioned ‘a place where I feel wanted’. For Margot Slattery, group head of diversity, inclusion & belonging at ISS, the survey results demonstrate the need but also the huge potential for employers to increase their focus on culture, employee wellbeing, and belonging.

• The 4,500 people surveyed represented a cross-section of society who work in various industries below management level in larger organisations with more than 250 employees. Respondents were based across the United Kingdom, USA, Germany, Denmark and Switzerland. No ISS employees participated in the survey.

Europeans ranked in terms of food hand hygiene practices

Danish people demonstrate better hand hygiene before preparing and eating food than their European neighbours, according to a new study.

And Spain comes bottom of the list of 10 European countries in terms of washing their hands before handling food.

The study, published in BMC Public Health, posed questions to consumers based on recommended hand hygiene practices. It also assessed observations in a field study carried out in 90 European households.

Significant differences were found regarding selfreported hand hygiene practices between respondents from the 10 European countries.

The overall rank from high to low was: Denmark, Greece, Norway, Romania, Hungary, Germany, UK, Portugal, France and Spain.

“It is worrying that about half the respondents seem to have insufficient hand washing routines to protect themselves and their family members from foodborne infection,” state the study authors.

Skip or shorten

“Even though hand washing is a skill learnt in early childhood, people practice it in different ways and often skip or shorten the WHO recommended procedure.”

According to the study, families with members aged over 65

showed a higher tendency to follow proper hand washing practices when handling food compared with those without, while families with children under six were up to twice as likely to wash their hands at critical moments compared with

families without children. The authors now want to conduct further research into the specific barriers influencing hand hygiene practices among high-risk groups such as elderly individuals and families with young children.

Dettol Pro Solutions survey suggests an end to hotdesking

The younger members of the UK’s workforce could be putting an end to the buzzy 2010s corporate trend of hotdesking, as new data suggests more than 71 per cent of white-collar employees are working from an assigned desk in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Most surveyed (58 per cent) reported sticking to a designated desk because of a ‘nervousness of germs’ - and of those, the majority were younger generations (63 per cent of 18-24-yearolds and 72 per cent of 25-34-year-olds).

The survey, commissioned by Dettol Pro Solutions, sought to find out how workplace

hygiene habits have shifted since the pandemic.

It highlights nervousness among employees about the spread of germs in the workplace. “It’s a very interesting time for businesses on the whole,” said Jonathan Weiss, commercial director B2B at Reckitt - the company that owns Dettol Pro Solutions.

Return to office

“We’ve seen the likes of Tesla and Meta demanding blanket returns to office environments and elsewhere, some businesses are foregoing their physical spaces altogether and moving to a fully remote model. The message is clear, however, for

those fully returning or opting for a hybrid approach: germ concern is still rife among employees and to instil confidence, employers and landlords need to rethink

the ways they’re keeping these spaces hygienically clean and asking teams to engage with them.”

ISS commits to employ 1,000 refugees in Europe over three years

Global facility management business ISS has made a commitment to recruit 1,000 refugees across its European operations over the next three years.

The announcement came at Tent Partnership for Refugee’s European Business Summit in Paris, and builds upon the company’s on-going commitment to hire, train and upskill immigrants and refugees.

Jangro partners with SYR

UK and Ireland janitorial and cleaning distributor network Jangro is partnering with product manufacturer SYR in a new sustainability initiative. The project is designed to strengthen Jangro’s existing Circular programme, which aims to reduce waste by keeping products and materials in use for

Have you had enough of training?

Thirty-nine per cent of cleaning staff say they are not particularly willing to learn new things. This was revealed in a survey conducted by the Dutch Cleaning Industry Labour Relations Board in 2021. At VSR, we find this hard to believe. We feel there is more to these numbers than meets the eye.

Time to exchange views with VSR members and market players. We did so by means of a webinar. This platform proved quite suitable for that purpose, even without a lockdown. Results from the survey provided discussion topics such as: do organisations prioritise training enough? Do the prerequisites for cleaning courses align with the target audience?

Participants in the discussion: our president, a representative of the Labour Relations Board and training managers from two cleaning companies. First, the professionals discussed how much of a priority it is for companies to train their employees.

Interestingly, 97 per cent of employers said they believe it is important for the subject of training to be part of performance reviews, while 87 per cent of the employees VSR spoke to did not have the same experience. These employees are aware there are training courses, but they say that the option to attend those courses is not discussed.

One of the conclusions drawn during the webinar was that managers often do not have much time to converse with employees. Their span of control is too wide.

There is another indicator that training is not always given the right priority. For example, when employees return to the work-

place after the training course, they are told how great it is they went on the course, but please could they get back to work now.

In short: plenty of ammunition to get started on the theme of ‘prioritising training’.

The second question the professionals wanted to answer was: are the prerequisites for training adequately matched to the target audience?

One way to involve more people in basic training is to organise it at the workplace. This not only makes participating easier, it also means you can immediately put the basic skills covered in the course into practice. This prevents employees from feeling that what they learned isn’t how things are done at their workplace.

Know your employees

What I found remarkable was our webinar participants’ complaints about the route to the basic vocational training exam. Some training facilities compete with one another, and make the training courses as short (and as cheap) as possible. They focus only on making sure employees pass their exams. After that, they’re on their own. But the exam should be a means, not an end. Curtailing training courses reduces cleaners’ professional quality.

The conclusion? Our president summed it up very succinctly: know your employees. Engage in conversation. Discuss opportunities, but also listen to your employees to find out what obstacles and bottlenecks they are facing. By investing in this way, you’ll prevent an exodus of workers and absenteeism and recoup your investment. Not only financially, but also in the relationship with your workers.

Walking to campaign against litter

Christian Bouzols in France tells us about a dustman who’s raising litter awareness in a unique way.

Ludovic Franceschet, a dustman already known for his posts on Tik Tok, has started out on a new adventure. Having walked around Paris in August last year to clean the streets, he’s set himself a new challenge consisting in walking to Marseilles and picking up all the litter he finds along the way. The kick-off for this 800 km journey took place on August 1st in front of Notre-Dame cathedral. He plans to arrive at a local beach in Marseilles on September 24th.

Franceschet’s goal is the same as the one he set himself walking around Paris: to pick up as much litter as possible and, above all, to make people aware of the need to correct their mindset relating to litter.

“I want people to understand me, and to realise that putting litter in a dustbin is not such a difficult thing. Anyone can do it. This action should just be normal,” says the 47-year-old whose teaching videos about his quest on social media have created a great buzz. He’s currently got 300,000 followers. Two of them have decided to go with him on this Marseilles trip.

“Thanks to Ludovic I’ve come to realise there was really too much litter on the roadside or in natural surroundings,” said Tony, a 22-year-old waiter. “To be honest, I too used to throw pieces of paper on the ground. So I felt guilty. Joining him on this project was a bit like finding forgiveness. “

The team also includes Patrick, driver of the camper van, and Maxime, 22, who picks up litter with Franceschet. “That wasn’t planned at all,” remarks the dustman, who had intended to walk alone. “But their help is obviously welcome and has enabled

us to pick up even more litter.”

Since their departure, they’ve walked along the famous Nationale 7 highway. “However, when it gets a little too risky, we change our itinerary and walk along local roads,” says Franceschet. “The traffic is slower there.”

Equipped with rolls of bin liners and litter pickers, he and his two co-workers collected some 2.6 tonnes of litter in the first few days. “Usually it’s packaging, plastic bottles, cigarette packs.... they’re lying everywhere. In the Fontainebleau forest, we’ve picked up nearly 1,500 drinks cans! It surely isn’t such a big thing to throw them in a dustbin.”

Fervent in his fight for cleanliness and environmental care, Franceschet was shocked by his passage through Orly, near Paris. “We collected more than 140 kg of litter in a single day. It was a disgrace!”

Although he circled Paris on foot a year ago, Ludovic Franceschet hadn’t seriously prepared himself for this much longer walk to Marseilles.

And even though his arrival in that port city is still far away, he is already thinking about something new. “I’ve got in mind to do a tour of France on foot with the same goal - to pick up all the litter I find along the way.”

That would involve 4,000 km of walking, to be achieved in one year. But to do that, he’ll need to raise the funds. “For that journey I think I’ll manage with about 20,000 euros. Whatever happens, I won’t give up,” he stressed. For the Paris-Marseilles trip, he has received support from several companies, from the City of Paris, and from the Ile-deFrance region.

BIV seeks to reach new generations

Contract cleaning association BIV in Germany is launching social media campaigns, says Katja Scholz.

New media, modern communications – the Federal Association of Contract Cleaners (BIV) knows how to reach the new generation: with podcasts, promotional videos, Tik Tok etc. The association is using modern media to inform its target groups such as (potential) employees and customers about current issues and developments in this sector which has the largest number of employees in Germany.

As part of its employer brand identity, BIV’s aim is to inform, to reach out to and to discuss matters of policy and science, business in general and skilled trade in particular - training, digitalisation, migration and sustainability, as well as social and cultural developments.

In doing so it is beginning to turn its attention increasingly to promotional videos to reach its target groups and position its themes - the production of moving images has for several years been regarded as an increasingly important focal point for its communication.

Following a decision by the Public Relations Committee under the chairmanship of Holger Eickholz, the German Federal Skills Competition - at which Germany’s best young craftsmen and women in the building sector are chosen - has since 2019 been filmed, which was also the case in 2022 in Bremen. This was where the 11 best apprentices competed for the title of best young contract cleaner in Germany – and the BIV produced a promotional video to accompany this and was nominated for the mediaV Award 2023 in the moving image category - the second time this has happened. In 2021 both nomination and award

were achieved, in this case for the coronavirus campaign video, #Protection.

This year unfortunately, the BIV didn’t quite make the grade. The award went to a fellow competitor, German Diabetes Aid, for its film ‘Clever Animals Drink Water’. The mediaV award is presented every other year to associations, agencies, charities, trade unions, media professionals etc, for excellence in communications.

But this was still not enough in terms of moving image and new media: the BIV recently gave the go-ahead for its new video campaign. With the publication of over 60 videos of widely varying design, style and format, the association is aiming to attract the attention of mainly younger people through modern, image-promoting videos about the wide diversity of activities, the technical innovations and the excellent opportunities for training and development within the contract cleaning sector.

The campaign is divided into four sequences: technology, messages, statements and influencers. For this last one, BIV has launched its new Tik Tok channel – as a platform for the younger target demographic.

The videos will be published on social networks in the coming months and all of them are also available to the regional associations and guilds as well as member companies. “We are particularly proud of the fact that 15 young trainee contract cleaners - from apprentices to journeymen - have invested their time, their personal message and their personality in the campaign. To that extent, it is a genuine campaign from the sector for the sector!” said Holger

Changing habits for a green future

Cleaning operatives are training for a greener future in a Danish municipality, writes Lotte Printz.

The white and green electric vehicles visible in roads around the country proclaim that “they care” at ABENA. For the environment among other things - and people. And now this southern Denmark based company plays a key part in the municipality of Tønder’s transition to a greener future.

110 cleaning operatives working for the municipality have taken part in cleaning courses at the ABENA Academy, set up three years ago. To develop new habits and methods in cleaning routines and to make sure that cleaning in Tønder becomes more environmentally friendly. Among other things, focus has been on dosage and minimising use of water and over-consumption in general.

The green transition goes hand in hand with better working conditions for the staff, which is also of the utmost importance to the management. Cleaning products, tools and trolleys have been replaced with ECO-certified models and some that cater for the needs of the cleaning staff. Like Anja Hansen who has cleaned at the town hall for seven years and was part of a test team.

Speaking to the Danish cleaning industry magazine, Rent i Danmark, she says her workday has become much easier with improved trolleys, among other things. The height has been lowered to match the height of the cleaners, the trolley has a handle at each end to make it easier to manoeuvre and is so capacious that it allows her to carry most of the tools and products needed for a ‘round’ so she walks considerably less at work than she used to. Made of 90 per cent recycled plastics, the trolleys also send the ‘right’ signals in the green transition.

A third focus of the endeavours to secure a more sustainable future for the cleaning staff also includes ‘visual and trust-based cleaning’ giving the cleaning operatives a say in their working day. Instead of putting labels on the doors telling them to clean this or that, the cleaning operatives make their own assessments as to the need for cleaning.

Helped along by the knowledge and qualifications gained in training and close dialogue with the people they meet daily.

This as well as being in charge of their working day give them their sense of professional pride back and a higher degree of job satisfaction, they believe in Tønder.

Sustainable approach to wellbeing

UK correspondent Lynn Webster explains why workforce wellbeing is so vital for every business.

Employee wellbeing is becoming a focal point for many; and this includes the cleaning industry where businesses are engaged in activities internally and also whilst engaging with and supporting client projects.

Social media streams have been covering some great stories featuring companies’ direct and indirect support of their employees’ wellbeing. From highlights of small teams of employees taking on environmental projects such as river/canal cleaning; tree planting outings and charity garden designs to the investment in social opportunities for employees and their families in ‘get-togethers’. Further examples cover greater corporate commitment and collaboration with local communities.

So, why is this happening?

The fostering of wellbeing for employees is being embedded into many business strategies. It is this good practice that encourages people and subsequently the organisation to thrive. Proven to relieve and help prevent stress, create positive working environments and delivering higher morale - which in turn demonstrates increased productivity, so when staff are motivated, wellbeing becomes a valuable investment.

Wellness can focus on individual, emotional, physical and social wellbeing which particularly encompasses mental health. This, when integrated into workplace wellbeing plans, can generate a positive culture, identify closely with corporate priorities, and when further linked to benefits provides the measures in place for a positive work-life balance for everyone.

Being happy at work provides people with a sense of purpose and value. Forbes published

the results from one study that revealed happy employees are as much as 20 per cent more productive in the workplace than unhappy ones.

Inevitably there is not one single solution. A wellbeing strategy is not just a policy statement to be posted on the wall or as principles featuring in a glossy proposal or business bid. It is based on the true characteristics of the business and their employees, and reaches out far more than just demonstrating a set of initiatives.

It should feature headings such as health (mental, physical, and safety); work (environment, management and reward); values (ethics, inclusion and diversity); people (development, learning and emotions and counselling); lifestyle choices and financial impacts - with examples of support and advice.

Recent personal experience with a client provided some very real examples of the impact of such a strategy across their business. They have embarked on their wellbeing journey striving to embrace their whole ‘We Care’ philosophy considering a process that adopts the Fitwel model which aims to provide “a healthier future where all buildings and communities are enhanced to strengthen health and wellbeing”. They have engaged with clients in a vision of building health alongside putting their people’s wellbeing first to “provide them with the means, opportunity and skill to improve their lives and the lives of their families”. Certainly, a powerful view to take forward.

As a people-driven sector we are in an ideal position to promote this agenda - with the confidence we are capable of supporting the wellbeing of others.

With summer comes deep cleaning

The summer holiday in Italy is traditionally the time for deep cleaning, explains Anna Garbagna.

In the last two months, summer has made its entrance forcefully in the Italian regions with alternating periods from definitely African heat to extreme meteorological events. One of the main hygiene issues is often caused by heat and humidity creating fertile ground for the development of moulds and bacteria.

The summer break is therefore the ideal time to perform annual professional deep cleaning of offices, warehouses and factories. This is so that throughout the year it is possible to maintain an optimal level of cleaning on a daily basis.

It is not a coincidence that disinfectants show a double digit growth thanks to the contribution of high temperatures while washing aids and maintenance products also grow confirming that the period is ideal for industrial deep cleaning.

Peace of mind

Windows, floors (in offices) and machinery (in production lines) are indisputable points for those who wish to face the return to work with peace of mind.

When the production line is idle or slow working, cleaning can be more thorough - confirming August to be the ideal month for these activities.

Industrial extractors are essential for this type of operations, whether we are talking about containment tanks, machine tools or subfloors. To clean areas that are more difficult to reach, compact professional extractors are often used because they guarantee an exceptional level of hygiene despite their reduced size. Thus, once again, cleaning becomes a safety instrument in workplaces. We must not forget desks, changing rooms and canteens which are often receptacles of bacteria if they are not sanitised regularly and systematically.

The use of two types of scrubber dryers (ride-on or walk-behind) according to the area to be cleaned, proves to be a winning choice for a safe and well sanitised workplace.

Orbital floor cleaning machines can be essential for dewaxing operations to remove waxes and polishes and to prepare floors for new coatings.

Carpets, often still present in offices or communal areas, must not be neglected because they are often receptacles of dust, bacteria and other types of dirt. Injecting water, using a specialised brush at high speed and the consequent dirty water extraction is often the ideal procedure for a deep cleaning operation.

And last but not least, before the start of the summer season the cleaning of air conditioning and ventilation systems is essential. In fact, it is not only dust lurking in the ducts but also bacteria or other pathogenic agents such as legionella that can be really harmful.

In all these years, the Italian cleaning sector has really been able to keep up with technology and innovation thanks to its companies which are among the most versatile in the world without ever forgetting that efficiency and reliability can grow also and above all in clean and hygienic environments.

A change in the air

VIBRATING MESHES, perfume diffusers, nanotechnology – these terms and others like them are increasingly being used in the same breath as ‘air fresheners’. The market has grown massively in sophistication over the past few decades and manufacturers are coming up with new and innovative fragrance delivery methods all the time.

But the concept of masking malodours and replacing them with pleasant aromas is practically as old as time itself. In fact, the ancient Egyptians were world leaders in the international perfume trade according to Vectair vice-president of marketing Chelsey Schwartz.

“Many of the scents created in ancient Egypt used myrrh and cinnamon as their core ingredients, both of which can still be found in popular perfumes today,” she said.

Perfume oils were typically stored in ornate alabaster bottles and classed as a precious substance, says Schwartz. “In fact when Julius Caesar won the Battle of the Nile in 47BC, he threw bottles of perfume to the crowd upon his triumphant return to Rome,” she said. “Records show that the ancient Egyptians actually believed perfume to be the sweat of the gods.”

Early perfumes were typically made by boiling flower petals, herbs and spices and soaking them in a carrier agent such as olive oil, says Schwartz. “Imported spices such as pepper, cinnamon or ginger were also used to add an exotic element to local scents,” she adds.

Synthetic fragrances

When synthetic ingredients were first introduced in the late 19th century they enabled fragrances to be mass produced and sold at an affordable price, according to Schwartz. “This meant perfume could become an everyday pleasure rather than an occasional luxury,” she explains. “And perfume oils were used to freshen the air until the mid-20th century, when aerosol sprays in pressurised cans were developed to deliver bursts of fragrance into

the atmosphere.”

The air freshening market has evolved both in terms of technology and scent since Vectair began trading in the 1980s, says Schwartz. “Most fragrance dispensers used to be placed in washrooms where a fresh citrus scent was used to mask odours,” she said. “And aircare dispensers were designed to be smelt – but not seen.

“Now however, air fresheners have become a requirement for refined, sophisticated environments such as reception areas, meeting rooms and spas. And today’s dispensers are designed to complement any upscale environment and blend in with the décor.”

Protection

Vectair is continuously working to create new technologies and produce more effective air fresheners, says Schwartz. The company’s patented Vibe Pro dosing system is said to enable its Vibrating Mesh Technology to deliver superior scent consistency. “A membrane containing 2,000 laser-cut holes vibrates at the bottom of a reservoir, forcing out a mist of very fine droplets through the holes,” said Schwartz. “This allows the fragrance to be delivered precisely and efficiently – which is something manufacturers have struggled to achieve in the past.”

Antimicrobial technology is also increasingly helping to protect staff and customers from harmful germs, she adds. Vectair’s Invizi-Touch technology is designed to provide protection against bacterial build-up from germs such as MRSA, E.Coli and Legionella.

Prodifa was among the first companies to offer precise automatic diffusion systems for fragrances in the 1980s, according to marketing director Florian Leveugle. “This delivered a consistent fragrance over a period of up to three months,” he said.

“It was a solenoid valve system and is still part of our range today.”

The first fragrance diffusers were essentially candles or sachets containing scented essences, he says. “The most common system today is the aerosol dis-

Deodorisation

Early fragrance products functioned erratically and were not designed for the professional sector, he says. “Either consumption was too high or efficiency diminished over time.

“For a long time the market was driven by price because the aim above all was to deodorise. But many low-cost products are ineffective because they only produce a smell for a few seconds - and sometimes not a very pleasant smell at that. In these cases you might as well not be using an air freshener at all.”

There is now a wide range of technologies available on the market today, says Leveugle. “Automatic diffusers with a timer are ideal for the professional market because they offer value for money and a precise, stable diffusion that lasts for up to eight months with a single

refill,” he said.

Solid systems such as impregnated polymers provide a high level of fragrance power, while ultrasound/piezoelectric systems using a mixture of oil and water are both pleasant and aesthetically pleasing, according to Leveugle.

Continuous release

“However, they require regular refilling with fragrance and water while the vibrating membranes tend to clog up quickly, which causes the device to lose its effectiveness,” he said.

Nebulisation systems have been around for years and are highly efficient, says Leveugle. “Our tests show that we can perfume a room measuring 50,000 cubic metres using just one device,” he said.

Prodifa’s latest products include Ideal Misty, claimed to be the first diffuser with refillable metering valve refills. These are said to reduce refill waste by 92 per cent. The company has also launched a new range of fragrances and programmable nebulisers as well as introducing more recycled and recyclable plastics into its products.

Essity’s earliest air fresheners took the form of a plastic tab that would change colour once it had been used up, says the company’s global brand innovation manager Meta Grundén.

“Many traditional air fresheners struggle to remain effective due to their ‘spray and fade’ effect,” she said. “They also need to

be placed high on walls to deliver freshness to the whole washroom, which is not ideal when making dispenser checks or refilling the unit.”

New from Essity is the Tork Constant Air Freshener which incorporates a generator that continuously releases oxygen. This emits precise doses of fragrance which are delivered to a cellulose pad. The propellant-free system is said to distribute the fragrance evenly throughout the room and each refill lasts for 90 days.

Hagleitner’s first air freshener was the NOLI air purification device, says the company’s product manager Kerstin Heine. “The scent was dispersed throughout a room by the draft of a door wafting the scent through the fins of the device,” she said. “The NOLI-Filler refill was a wad of cotton wool soaked in essential oil and would last for two months.

“Then came the HAGI fragrance dispenser which would be attached to the top of a door. Every time the door closed, a button on the dispenser would be pushed against the door frame causing the dispenser to emit a burst of air freshener.”

These products were followed by the first digital air fresheners to be equipped with a motion sensor, she said. “With these it was possible to set a time interval for scenting, but the dispersion had to be fine-tuned to ensure that a room was evenly scented.”

She says today’s digital air freshener dispensers are much more customisable. “Many things can be set via the app including the intensity of scenting and the period for which it is active,” she said. “In addition, the frequency and volume can be adjusted while the range of fragrances has been adapted to tie in with customer requests.”

Hagleitner offers the wall-mounted airFRESH spray and the Magicus system which works through evaporation. The fragrance oil is heated on small plates causing it to vapourise and diffuse into the air. The column is said to be suitable for scenting larger areas.

So, how will air fresheners develop in the future? The popularity of programmable technology will rise still further, according to Vectair’s Chelsey Schwartz.

“Customers appreciate the ability to fully control their dispenser output because if a fragrance is too strong, they can turn it down,” she said. “A greater emphasis on sustainability has also prompted a shift towards greener scents containing earthy ingredients along with fruity and floral fragrances. And there is also a move towards scents being recognised as more genderneutral which means that traditionally masculine scents, such as leather, are now appealing to all genders.”

Higher expectations

The user experience and customer wellbeing are both growing in importance according to Essity’s Meta Grundén. “People now have greater expectations of indoor spaces and air quality is being placed higher up on the agenda,” she said.

Prodifa’s Florian Leveugle says his company is moving towards more ecoresponsible products. “Factors such as waste reduction, intelligent programming, greater autonomy of refills and devices that reduce the use of batteries are among our priorities,” he said. “We are also increasingly developing 100 per cent natural fragrances and ‘picto-free’ products.”

Hagleitner’s Kerstin Heine has also noted an increased demand for natural fragrances such as wood scents. “The market is developing according to this demand and it is important for us to keep up,” she said.

A pleasant fragrance can make any environment feel better and increase the dwell time of its occupants. This is especially important in our own homes, care homes, retail spaces or hotels where a happy occupant is important. Angela Stavrevska, creative director and perfumer at CPL Aromas, tells us why.

A cleaning product with an astringent citrus scent will feel more efficacious in use than the same product with a sweet, sticky, fruity fragrance. The importance of hand washing with warm water and soap has been highlighted by public safety guidance arising from the coronavirus pandemic. However, health and hygiene have always been, and will always be, aided by thorough hand washing. Encouraging this basic requirement is therefore essential. A great smelling soap or hand wash in a washroom environment will definitely encourage better hand washing. This is especially true for children and young people where these environments are often noisy, busy and not particularly engaging. Many public washrooms often have a cacophony of odours from the cleaning products used, the soap, the air freshener and perhaps the drains. This odour ‘noise’ isn’t conducive to a pleasant experience or encouraging taking time to freshen up and wash hands properly. Giving a more holistic odour atmosphere to a washroom space will make the experience much better.

Masking unpleasant odours

There are numerous products on the market that claim to mask many unpleasant odours. But these general ‘one solution fits all’ products don’t particularly work strongly across every single malodour type. If cooking smells are a particular problem, then a product that has been especially developed to counteract the smell of the unpleasant odour molecules in cooking smells will give a much better performance than an all-purpose malodour solution. The sophistication of this category can mean that products may be tailored down to the detail of what food odour needs to be masked, be it stale, fried food, old fish or garlic smells. Effect of ambient fragrance

The best way for building owners and occupiers to think about fragrance in their space is to ensure they start with a clean base. Good ventilation and plumbing, and not too many absorbent fabrics in a building will help keep malodours at bay.

Then, to build an ambience, you must ensure that the fragrance used isn’t particularly polarising and that the chosen scent supports the brand or corporate message you want to portray. For example, if you manage a ski hotel in the mountains, you may want the lobby to smell of a warm fireside, so as soon as people walk in, they feel warm, relaxed and taken care of. Alternatively, if you work in a modern, creative office space, the invigorating smell of fresh lemons or crisp green apples will add to the fresh, clean and vibrant ambience.

Fragrances inspired by natural environments are usually the least polarising and appeal to both sexes. But if you want your building to be memorable for any specific reason, fragrance can be used to support that message – a sumptuous luxury hotel could for instance be supported by a rich, ambery oriental fragrance. Somewhere inspired by the tropics could include heady, white flower scents and fruity notes. An urban city feeling could be supported by the smell of coffee and pastries. But care should always be taken with the fragrance strength: too high and it could feel intrusive and unpleasant.

Fragrances and psychological effects

The act of actively smelling fragrances is very subjective in its nature. It is almost impossible to step back from a fragrance

and analyse its quality and character whilst leaving aside your personal feelings for it. This is because the olfactive bulb, the part of the nose that picks up odour molecules, has a direct link to the brain’s limbic system. This system supports a variety of functions including emotion, behaviour, motivation, long-term memory and, of course, olfaction. Thus our sense of smell is intrinsically linked with our emotions and memories, which is why being objective about a smell is so difficult. Even perfumers struggle.

Due to the olfactory bulb’s close links with the brain, fragrance is known to psychologically and physiologically affect us and olfactory stimulation has been shown to modify blood pressure, muscle tension, pulse rate and skin temperature amongst other effects. But research remains quite limited to the types of odours tested and their effect on the general population.

For example, lavender oil has for many years been associated with relaxation. Electroencephalographic (EEG) results do tend back up this claim, although results are often quite varied. But general research doesn’t tend to delve deeply into the effects of individual chemicals found within the essential oils nor does it look at synergistic effects of many different essential oils and aromachemicals when combined, such as in a fragrance created by a perfumer. The complexity and history of the person smelling the odorant could also have an effect on the outcomes of research.

Stimulate or calm

I have already talked about how fragrance is intrinsically linked to emotions and is therefore very subjective, but do some odour materials give an objective outcome totally unbiased by emotion? Or will subjectivity always give inconsistency in results? Will a higher concentration of the odour have a different effect to a subliminal level, and what effect does exposure time have on the results? There is huge complexity involved in researching odour materials, and there are many thousands of odour materials that can be used in research. There is still much to be done.

Using some of the basic results of research can potentially help to make an environment more pleasurable or to help stimulate or calm its occupants – whether it actually does, or whether it is by placebo effect. Lavender can help create a calming atmosphere; citrus oils can help invigorate; gourmand odours can increase dwell time; mint can help focus; and green, grassy smells can help decrease fatigue and pain sensations, which might be brilliant in gym or healthcare settings.

But the simplest thing that can be done is to make an environment smell more pleasant to the majority of users. A generally pleasant odour, even at a low level, can strongly impact a person’s emotions when in an enclosed space. Taking this a step further into a marketing sphere, Martin Lindstrom, the author and brand consultant, found that brand impact increased by 30 per cent when more than one sense is engaged and by a whopping 70 per cent when three senses are integrated into the

brand message.

A scent marketing study by Martin Lindstrom concluded that up to 75 per cent of human emotions related to memory are triggered by smells. Studies have shown that scent marketing statistics are compelling. For example, people can remember a scent with 65 per cent accuracy after one year, while visual memory sinks to 50 per cent.

So, a great smell will encourage people to stay in a place for longer, have a more positive experience whilst there and walk away with reinforced positive memories of the space and of what happened there. Whether that odour is a carefully crafted iconic brand scent, or whether it is the smell of clean fluffy towels in a hotel bathroom, fragrance can definitely help customers bond with your brand as well as encourage enjoyment of using a fragranced product such as soap or hand cream, so aiding hygiene. The importance of smell is not to be sniffed at.

Most people outside the specialist cleaning sector will never have heard about biofilms. Invisible, but everywhere - biofilms are the immobile communities of microorganisms that stick to one another, and then onto surfaces. They often float freely in the air, until the right environmental cues - a change in acidity or nutrient concentration - attracts them onto a surface, where they mature and multiply.

Once on a surface, they embed themselves in a slime-like substance formed of DNA, polysaccharides, and proteins. These colonies can be found in most untreated homes and workplaces. They can even form on and inside animals, including humans. And unlike unbound bacteria of the same species, those that form biofilms become very difficult to control. That can present a serious risk to human health - a risk that we must attempt to eliminate.

Why should we care about biofilms?

I should be clear here: biofilms are not inherently bad. They can actually be very useful in the treatment of wastewater and industrial waste. Biotech engineers continue to find new ways to use biofilms in ways that benefit society. Uncontrolled though, biofilms can present serious health risks to human beings.

We should care about biofilms because they offer refuge to bacteria, viruses, and fungi, some of which can be pathogenic. That includes the Covid-19 virus. When we fail to eliminate them, they can make food and water unsafe. Ultimately, they present a source of harmful infections.

Another, perhaps secondary, reason we should care about biofilms is because of their potential to damage the surfaces they adhere to. They can cause discolouration and, over time, corrosion. That can reduce equipment and materials’ lifespans and generally affect a building’s appearance. Controlling them is therefore important in workplaces and public spaces to maintain hygiene, appearance, and restrict the spread of infectious diseases.

of their biocidal resilience. Many of these products claim to kill 99.9 per centof germs. But even those will leave harmful bacteria behind after application. As part of REACT’s recent barrier tech report, we consulted Dr Sandra Wilks, an associate professor of health sciences at the University of Southampton. Dr Wilks told us that biofilms’ resilience to cleaning products is often missed in standard tests. To demonstrate efficacy, we need to introduce more specific tests, she says.

Cleaning specialists also need to consider other methods to protect the environments they’re responsible for. Instead of applying a cleaning product, biofilms require a different approach. The affected surfaces themselves can be treated to prevent colonisation. Products known as ‘barrier technologies’ (or simply ‘barrier tech’) can be very effective in this way.

The two main types of barrier tech can be used either by applying a new coating that contains antimicrobial materials (biocides, copper, or silver), or by creating a completely new surface with a structural make-up that prevents or destroys bacteria that colonise it. These technologies are growing in popularity due to their success. In 2022, Grand View Research valued the antimicrobial coatings market at US$10 billion (€9.25 billion).

You can find both examples of barrier tech in healthcare environments and on medical devices. In workplaces and public spaces, their use is growing, but not so prevalent. The quicker we can adopt these approaches, the sooner the buildings and vehicles they’re used in will be safe.

Some products available

I’ve explained why we need barrier tech, and how it can help to prevent and destroy biofilms. Here are three examples of barrier technologies that are already being used for that purpose:

• ntrl by Jangro: a 13-product range that includes a washroom cleaner and multi-surface cleaner containing probiotics. These colonise and dominate surfaces, preventing the colonisation of pathogens.

Dave Rudge, operations manager for REACT Specialist Cleaning, tells us more.

• Citrox Protect Hard Surface Sealant by Citrox Biosciences: cleans, seals, and protects all hard surfaces and touchpoints. This sealant enables long-term protection for up to six months against the spread of bacteria and viruses through biofilms. It is touch-dry within minutes of application and fully seals within 24 hours. The product works in two stages. A silicon dioxide first prevents bacteria and viruses from binding to surfaces by creating a silicon dioxide barrier. Any pathogens that do attach to the surfaces are then killed by a natural Bioflavonoid complex called Citrox.

FTP Wraps ‘n’ Pads by The Decontaminator: wraps that add a layer of infection prevention to touchpoints like door handles (FTP being ‘frequent touch point’). They contain the antimicrobial zinc pyrithione, which provides protection for up to three years. They are certified under ISO 22196 to reduce bacteria and viruses, fungi and parasites by 99.99 per cent.

While barrier tech presents the best way to tackle biofilms, it isn’t perfect. Antimicrobial surfaces require regular attention to prevent the build-up of what are known as ‘conditioning films’. These films

are formed up of dead cells, and can build up on surfaces, reducing the effect of barrier technologies. Once new cells attach to such surfaces, they can survive despite the prior application of barrier technologies.

While barrier tech works well on hard surfaces, it doesn’t do so well on some softer materials and fabrics. Achieving complete coverage of porous and flexible materials can be difficult, and the market for antimicrobial fabrics hasn’t developed to serve all demand yet, like that of public transport operators. Most of the focus has been on antimicrobial sportswear and medical garments, widely available.

There’s also an issue with regulation. Barrier tech is relatively advanced, and regulations are yet to catch up with the sector. There aren’t any standardised

More innovation is coming in this sector. As the market evolves, and more people realise barrier tech’s value in preventing the spread of infectious diseases, companies will fund more research into new products. Nevertheless, there are a few tips I can give that will help cleaning specialists to use them effectively.

First, make sure you use products supported by at least some scientific research, even if it is independent. This might be proven through certification in line with existing regulation, as well as empirical research results. Second, follow manufacturers’ guidelines, as barrier tech often

Biofilms present a serious risk that cleaning specialists cannot ignore. We must inform ourselves of the most recent research in preventing and destroying them. With the right products, and trained operatives, it is possible to prevent the risks associated with biofilms in the workplace, in public spaces and at home.

Now, let’s take a closer look at microfibre. Microfibre is synthetic fibre with a linear density of less than one denier. This is 100 times thinner than a human hair. In the professional cleaning market, a high quality microfibre consists of a nylon core surrounded by polyester fibre wedges. This is created in a process that melts polyester and polyamide (nylon) together in order to weave thin threads. These threads then undergo a unique splitting process. The optimal splitting of microfibre creates a system of hollow tubes with capillary action. These hollow tubes or pinholes pick up dirt quickly and efficiently. This gives the microfibre very high absorbency, higher than a conventional cotton mop.

A microfibre mop cleans surfaces efficiently and hygienically. The microfibre’s capillary action ensures that the cloth absorbs microorganisms as well as visible dirt. A cotton or low-quality microfibre cloth spreads or moves the dirt on the surface rather than absorb it fully. As a result, more residue is left behind on the surface

CMS Berlin tackles key sector themes

CMS Berlin 2023 - the professional cleaning exhibition for Germany - will take place at Messe Berlin from September 19-22. It returns after an absence of four years, as the 2021 edition did not take place due to the pandemic.

Occupying an area of more than 31,000 square metres in the halls and on the outdoor display area, around 450 exhibitors, the highest number to date, took part in CMS Berlin 2019. Coming from 25 countries, they provided an overview of the products and services from every branch of the commercial cleaning industry. A total of 25,000 visitors from 80 countries were there.

CMS Practice Forum

This year, alongside the trade show the event will act as a dialogue platform for discussing the industry’s headline topics. In a variety of formats experts will share their knowledge on subjects including energy efficiency, sustainability, the skills shortage, inflation and digitalisation.

At the CMS Practice Forum - in cooperation with the Federal Guild Association of the Cleaning Trade (BIV), the Cleaning Systems Trade Association in the German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA), the Hygiene Industry Association (IHO) and industry companies, there will be a programme of lectures and events. This forum features topics targeting specific audiences, including those representing hygiene and health, the hotel trade and gastronomy. Among the healthcare subjects will be building cleaning services for healthcare facilities, UV disinfection and an update on hospital cleaning services. Green housekeeping will specifically address the hotel trade. There will also be sessions on the EU’s Green Deal, reporting on sustainability and sustainability seals of approval. Celebrating its 10th year in business during 2023 is the DHYS (Distribution in Hygiene Specialist) Group, one of Europe’s leading international distribution groups for professional hygiene products. Corruption … how widespread is it across the European Union? Citizen surveys show it is perceived a serious threat and one the bloc is losing the fight to contain. Hartley Milner reports on the growing impacts of corruption and how EU legislators are responding.

‘CORRUPTION’ AND ‘SLEAZE’ are the two words that most readily trip from people’s lips at the first whiff of scandal. Such knee-jerk assertions may not carry much evidential weight but do point to growing distrust in EU institutions and cynicism about how they are regulated.

Crime agencies struggle with corruption. This is because “the abuse of entrusted power for private gain”, as it is commonly defined, happens in the shadows, which makes it difficult to detect, prosecute and to know the true extent of its reach.

What is known is that in its most aggressive guise, corruption permeates our political, corporate, legal, health and security institutions and trickles down to the very bedrock of society, manifesting in fraud, bribery, extortion, cronyism and nepotism. It compromises internal markets by reducing growth, spreading

uncertainty, creating additional costs and lowering investment levels. It weakens democracy, exacerbates inequality, poverty, social division and environmental degradation. It is an ally only of organised crime and repressive autocratic regimes. Corruption is estimated to cost the European Union between €179 billion and €990 billion a year, as much as six per cent of its GDP. The wide disparity in these estimates further highlights how little is understood about the extent of the problem and how challenging it is for law enforcers to get a grip on. EU countries are among the least corrupt in the world, according to the UN. But citizens of the region are far from reassured, a recent report on corruption has found.

Pessimistic view

Across the 27 EU member states, four in 10 respondents told a survey conducted by the European Commission they believe corruption has increased in their country over the past three years. More than 70 per cent say it is “widespread” in their country, up two percentage points since 2022. Meanwhile, 22 per cent believe it to be “very widespread”, 48 per cent “fairly widespread”, 26 per cent “rare”, 22 per cent

“fairly rare” and four per cent “very rare”. These findings show respondents have a slightly more pessimistic view of the spread of corrupt activities in their country than population samples polled last year.

In 21 member states, the majority of respondents say corruption is widespread across their country. A whopping 97 per cent say this in Greece and 96 per cent in Croatia. Perceptions are much the same in Portugal (93 per cent) and in Cyprus and Malta (both 92 per cent). However, Greece is the only country where more than half of respondents (54 per cent) think corruption is “very widespread”. In six countries, fewer than half believe it is widespread: Finland (13 per cent), Denmark (21 per cent), Sweden (36 per cent), Luxembourg (40 per cent), the Netherlands (47 per cent) and Estonia (48 per cent).

The business sector is broadly on the same page with regard to the extent of the problem. More than 65 per cent of companies perceive corruption to be “fairly” to “very” widespread in their country. Notably, the number saying it is “very widespread” rose by four percentage

points to 28 per cent compared to 2022. Both citizens and businesses are increasingly sceptical about national efforts to combat corruption, the study shows. More than three quarters of Europeans think that too close links between business and politics lead to corruption, while two thirds say high-level cases are not pursued sufficiently. Only a minority of citizens have confidence in their country’s anti-corruption measures, with just 35 per cent believing they are applied impartially and “without ulterior motives”. Under a third (32 per cent) feel there are enough successful prosecutions to deter corrupt practices.

Threat never higher

A small majority of companies think it likely individuals and businesses engaged in corrupt practices would face charges and go to court. Just 12 per cent of respondents think it “very likely” they would and 41 per cent “fairly likely” More than three out of four company managers (78 per cent) say “too close” links between business and politics lead to corruption and 72 per cent agree favouritism and corruption hamper business competition. One in two companies doubt businesses engaging in corruption would be caught or reported, and less than 40 per cent that they would be heavily fined or imprisoned.

Whatever the perceptions about corruption, it has never posed “such a high threat to the EU and its citizens as it does today”, according to Europol. In its latest crime threat report, the police agency says almost 60 per cent of criminal networks engage in corruption in one form or another and more than 80 per cent of crime organisations active in the region use legal business structures for their criminal activities.

“Criminals are digital natives,” Europol says, adding: “Virtually all criminal activities now feature some online component and many crimes have fully migrated online.” Criminals exploit encrypted communications to network among each other, and use social media and instant messaging services to reach larger audiences to advertise illegal goods or spread disinformation.

during the six years to 2021, steadily increasing each year from 78 cases in 2016 to 112 by the end of the period, despite the pandemic. The agency’s quadrennial report shows countries with the highest number of registered cases were Greece (114 cases), Germany (99), Romania (88), Italy (87) and Spain (77). Denmark and Estonia had the lowest number, with seven and 11 cases.

Meanwhile, watchdog Transparency International identifies a significant ‘implementation gap’ in the EU between anti-corruption rules and actual practice. “The EU and the European Commission in particular has not fully recognised the role that civil society can have in changing norms and achieving better implementation and enforcement,” it says. “The EU needs to focus on facilitating anticorruption efforts in member states and non-EU countries alike, and on creating a space for meaningful engagement with civil society.”

European Commission president Ursula Von Der Leyen last year vowed decisive action to bolster the EU’s war on corruption. She said: “If we want to be credible when we ask candidate countries to strengthen their democracies, we must also eradicate corruption at home. We will raise standards on offences such as illicit enrichment, trafficking in influence and abuse of power beyond the more classic offences such as bribery. And we will also propose to include corruption in our human rights sanction regime, our new tool to protect our values abroad. Corruption erodes trust in our institutions. So we must fight back with the full force of the law.”

Need for EU focus

In a draft directive announced in May, the Commission sets out wide-ranging measures it says would deliver on Von Der Leyen’s pledges. Misappropriation of funds, trading in influence, abuse of office, illicit enrichment and obstruction of justice will now become harmonised criminal offences across the bloc, along with punishments for corruption offences. Bribery in the public and private sectors is currently the only corruption offence criminalised at EU level.

criminalise all forms of corrupt behaviour. Illicit enrichment is an offence in only eight countries, a gap that leaves many countries falling short of UN-defined standards, according to EU officials. Trading in influence is reported as criminalised by 23 states, but how the offence is defined differs significantly across countries and may only be partly covered in national legislation. Punishments vary widely as well. Prison terms for bribery in the public sector range from three months to 15 years and in the private sector from three months to 12 years. Embezzlement in the public sector can lead to sentences of from three months to 15 years and for private sector offences three months to 20 years. Illicit enrichment carries terms of between six months and 15 years.

Opaque procedures

As part of the EU’s sweeping corruption crackdown, member states would be required to have an anti-corruption agency and cooperate with a new EU anticorruption network. The law, which would apply to public institutions and private companies, would also seek to end what EU officials see as “opaque” procedures for lifting immunity from prosecution for certain individuals. Another of the network’s key tasks will be to support European Commission efforts to map out areas across the EU where corruption risks are high.

Whistleblowers are recognised for their crucial role in helping expose corruption, wherever it rears its ugly head. Special protection is proposed in the hope it will encourage more people to come forward with their suspicions about shady dealings in their institution.

“These proposals will cover the corruption crimes agreed internationally under the UN Convention Against Corruption,” says EU home affairs commissioner Ylva Johansson. “They will complement our new proposal on asset recovery and help support a culture of integrity with activities for corruption prevention. It is also the first time that we bring public sector corruption and private sector corruption under one umbrella law. With this proposal, we aim at tightening the net around the corrupt.”

Swept under the carpet

Is it an open secret that increasing numbers of organisations are now swapping their carpets for hard floors? ECJ asks carpet care specialists about the elephant in the room – and invites them to make their own case for textile floor coverings.

HARD FLOORS ARE appearing everywhere. It is becoming increasingly rare to find a restaurant, bar or hotel reception with a plush fitted carpet. Instead their floors are made from wood, linoleum, vinyl, laminate or any one of the many other hard flooring options available.

But why? Are carpets perceived to be less hygienic or more difficult to clean than hard floors? And what are the arguments in favour of choosing carpets?

Kärcher’s senior solutions cleaning consultant Christoph Scheiwiller has definitely noticed a trend for choosing hard floors in public buildings - but fashions come and go, he says. “Over the past 20 years there have been regular shifts in demand for floor materials,” he said. “It is all a question of changing tastes.”

Carpets are often perceived as needing more care than a hard floor, says Scheiwiller. “However, this is just not true,” he said. “If carpets were cared for in the same way as hard floors - if spills were quickly removed before having a chance to set in, for example - the amount of effort required would be similar.”

He says dust tends to be swept away immediately from a hard floor because it is visible. “The dust on a carpet is often allowed to settle and if left unchecked it will eventually wear down the fibres,” he says.

The perception that stain removal requires a certain level of expertise can be off-putting for some customers, he says. “It is essential to understand the type of carpet fibres, the structure of the material and the cleaning characteristics to achieve

the desired results,” he admits.

“But there are no disadvantages to choosing carpets – the customer simply needs to use different equipment and methods to clean them.”

Carpets have many upsides, he adds. “They create a luxurious atmosphere and feel soft and comfortable to walk on while also reducing noise,” says Scheiwiller. “This makes them particularly suitable for hotel corridors where they mask the sound of wheeled luggage being pulled along at all hours, and office buildings where they muffle footsteps and other noises such as chairs being moved across a floor.”

But they are not suitable for every public space, he adds. “Carpets cannot be properly disinfected so we don’t recommend them for environments such as hospitals, kitchens or food processing environments,” he said.

According to Scheiwiller the dust-binding properties of a carpet can lead to lower levels of fine dust and improved indoor air quality. “With proper maintenance they are suitable for allergy-sufferers,” he said. “Carpets retain the dust more effectively than hard floors where the slightest breeze will raise it and it then takes longer to resettle.”

Kärcher’s iCapsol system for interim carpet maintenance is designed to encapsulate the dirt and turn it into crystals which are then vacuumed away. The company also offers spray-extraction products and backpack vacuums.

LionsBot CEO Dylan Ng has also noted an increase in interest in hard floors over carpets due to their ease of maintenance. “Carpets require more care because their texture naturally traps more particles,” he said. “Tough stains cannot be scrubbed off and a daily cleaning schedule is needed to prevent any dust and dirt from accumulating and affecting indoor air quality, which could lead to health issues.”

The ultimate choice between hard floors and carpets comes down to personal choice and functional requirements, he says. “Organisations simply need to

choose the right cleaning solutions,” he adds. Lionsbot’s R3 Vac robot is designed for use in high-traffic areas where dirt might accumulate more quickly. This has a medical grade H13 HEPA filter to prevent minute particles from recirculating.

Truvox UK national sales manager Paul Robinson agrees flooring fashions go in cycles. “A few years ago there was a trend for natural fibres such as sisal and jute, and before that it was for laminates,” he said. “Now it seems hard floors are ontrend, particularly with the introduction of lower cost options. But carpets also appear to be on the rise again.”

Equally challenging

He believes carpets and hard floors can be equally challenging to maintain in different ways. “Too many people mop hard floors using excessive amounts of cleaning product which simply spreads the dirt around,” he said. “This leaves a detergent residue on the hard floor that causes it to resoil very quickly, and eventually it becomes a struggle to get the floors clean.

“But if carpets are not maintained with regular vacuuming, the dirt can build up quickly and become difficult to remove. And it will be hard to keep both types of floors hygienically clean if they are not maintained correctly.”

According to Robinson, the hard floor versus carpet decision comes down to personal choice, practicability and the environment in question. “Carpets can help to reduce noise levels and prevent slips, but hard floors are more practical in areas such as washrooms, kitchens and dining areas,” he said.

He says carpets can be economically maintained using a vacuum with a powered head/brush. Truvox offers the Valet Dual Motor Upright, the cordless Valet Battery Upright and the Hydromist range of extraction cleaning machines.

Organisations may favour hard floors over carpets for a number of reasons, says Cleanology’s head of marketing Kate Lovell. “Hard floors such as laminate, tile or hardwood offer more durability and are

better able to withstand heavy foot traffic,” she said. “Additionally they are less prone to stains, damage and wear and tear which makes them practical for public areas.”

She believes hard floors are generally easier to clean and maintain than carpets. “This is because they can be swept, mopped or polished which makes the cleaning process easier and plays a key part in keeping a clean and hygienic environment.”

The ultimate choice between hard floors and carpets will depend on a number of factors, she says. “These include the specific needs of the space, comfort requirements, acoustic considerations and budget restrictions,” she said. “Some establishments such as hotels may opt for the warmth, sound absorption and comfort associated with carpets, for example.”

However, she adds carpets can trap allergens, dust and microorganisms such as bacteria and mould more easily than hard floors. “This can be a worry in high-traffic areas where carpets may gather more dirt and debris over time,” said Lovell, adding that regular vacuuming, deep cleaning and professional maintenance are required to keep carpets clean and hygienic.

Stains and spills may require additional treatments such as steam cleaning, she says. “Carpets can wear out, stain or become damaged over time and it can be expensive to replace or repair them,” said Lovell. “However, advances in carpet manufacturing have resulted in the availability of stain-resistant and easy-to-clean carpet fibres.”

Absorb sound

She believes carpets have many advantages over hard floors. “They can hide dirt, stains and wear more effectively because the fibres trap dirt particles and make them less visible,” she said. “This can be useful in high-traffic areas where frequent cleaning is impractical.

“Carpets can also absorb sound and minimise echoing and reverberation, making them suitable for locations such as offices, libraries and educational establishments. They also create a cosy and welcoming atmosphere in places where people may spend extended periods, such as in lounges, waiting areas and bedrooms. And they provide additional insulation which contributes to energy efficiency due to a reduction in heat loss.”

Cleanology employs a range of carpet care products including a fabric restorer designed to revitalise carpets and a coffee stain remover said to swiftly address spills and prevent long-term discolouration. The company also offers treatments to seal and protect the fabric plus a range of powder cleaning, extraction cleaning and bonnet cleaning options.

When unsightly dirt remains visible it can create the perception that carpets are more problematic to clean and maintain than hard floors, says Prochem Europe’s director of sales and training Phil Jones.

“Greasy soiling can stick to the surface and dull the colour and vibrance,” he says. “However, most damage can actually be avoided by regular vacuuming. If a carpet is regularly swept with an upright vacuum fitted with a cylindrical brush, then all the grit, sand and other aggressive particles deep down in the fibres will be released and dry-extracted. But if they are left behind, they will start to wear out the carpet through friction.”

will be the same as that of any hard floor. “They neglect to consider that the carpet has a ‘depth’ as opposed to merely a surface layer to which the soil will adhere,” he said. “This requires a more specialised cleaning method.”

Luxury and comfort are the most compelling arguments for choosing carpets over a hard floor, he says. “Many private care homes and hospitals choose carpets for the ‘at home’ ambience they create for the resident or visitor,” says Jones.

“And many restaurants and public houses choose dark coloured carpets to help hide the soiling. This extends the gaps between cleaning cycles and stretches the facility’s budget. But this can also lead to a reduction in the carpet’s lifespan.”

He adds some materials offer other benefits. “Wool fibre, for example, is resistant to dust mites and the build-up of

Prochem’s S745 Procaps for regular carpet cleaning said to encapsulate the dirt and dry it ready for vacuuming. Also from Prochem is B110 Bonnet Buff which is said to have anti-resoiling properties to prevent any sticky residue being left behind on the carpet which could attract soils and dust.

Never out of fashion

So, how will carpets fare in the future? Will they come back into fashion? They have never really fallen out of favour, says Jones. “Even with hard flooring allegedly making a comeback, customers are still putting rugs on top to reduce noise, create an impression of luxury and add colour,” he said.

Carpet will never completely go out of style, according to Kärcher’s Christoph Scheiwiller. “Trends come and go and manufacturers are likely to introduce new carpet types that provide a special feel and help people differentiate between different areas of a building,” he said.

And LionsBot’s Dylan Ng adds that carpets are unique. “They are ideal for certain environments and will never be obsolete,” he said. “And with new equipment that simplifies the task of carpet cleaning, there is a good chance that they will swing back into popularity.”

THE HAND TOWELS-versus-dryers debate has been going on for decades. Paper towel manufacturers claim their products are best for hand drying because they are fast, hygienic and efficient.

But air dryer companies make the counter-claim that their own systems reduce washroom waste and minimise the amount of maintenance required by facility managers. And the two sides had more or less reached a stalemate – before the global Covid-19 pandemic, that is.

This led to the entire global population becoming – perhaps justifiably – paranoid about hand hygiene. Experts believed that the virus was mainly spreading via the air, but that surfaces were also being contaminated by the virus. And anyone touching such a surface could then potentially spread Covid to others via their unwashed hands.

Suddenly everyone was washing and sanitising their hands at every opportunity. And hand towels became particularly popular in public washrooms because people began to use them as a barrier between their hands and the washroom fixtures to avoid having to touch the door handle upon exit, for example.

At the same time, negative reports about hand dryers began circulating on the internet. Claims were made that they were potentially blowing germs and viruses around the washroom environment and re-contaminating people’s hands after they had washed them. Headlines such as “TikTok viewers shocked by viral hand drying experiment” and: “Hand dryers are not as hygienic as you might think” became commonplace.

Non-scientific studies

On closer inspection it emerged that some of these web stories related to small-scale, non-scientific studies carried out by TikTok users or by school students working on science projects. However, in February this year a Leeds Institute of Medical Research experiment appeared to back up the claims. Volunteers taking part in the study dried their hands either with a

jet air dryer or with paper towels. And they wore face masks as a way of measuring the risk of inhaling viruses.

A total of 89 per cent of the masks worn by people using jet air dryers were found to be contaminated by viruses compared with 29 per cent of masks worn by the paper towel users.

So, how do hand dryer manufacturers counter these accusations? And what are their arguments for using air dryers over hand towels?

According to general manager of the Electric Hand Dryer Association Udo Sonnenberg, the reports that hand dryers spread viruses and bacteria around a washroom are simply not true.

Campaign by competitors

“Even during the pandemic there was no proof that hand dyers would spread bacteria – or even the virus itself,” he said. “And the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention both list hand dryers among their supported hand drying solutions.”

He claims there has been an active campaign against the use of hand dryers by competitors. “The advantages for public washrooms are significant: there is less waste plus a lower use of energy compared with producing and distributing paper,” he said. “There are also cost savings to be made when using a hand dryer. And the latest dryers are equipped with HEPA filters and ionisers to eliminate the effects of viruses and bacteria, while some manufacturers claim their products can dry the hands in eight seconds.”

According to Sonnenberg, reports of contamination by hand dryers persist despite the fact that the worst of the pandemic is over. “The narrative is that hand dryers spread the virus so we need to shut them down,” said Sonnenberg. “And this has led to insecurity from the user’s point of view.”

with hand dryers along with the hygiene benefits that HEPA filters or the use of UV can bring,” he said. “And that helps to rebuild confidence.”

He believes hand dryers offer genuine hygiene benefits despite what the detractors may say. “Customers don’t have to come into contact with any touchpoints when they use a hand dryer,” he points out. “There are no used paper towels left to contaminate the washroom after people have dried their hands. And today’s hand-drying technology can help to get rid of bacteria.”

Chief marketing officer at dryer manufacturer JVD Simon Pienne agrees with Sonnenberg that the social media reports focusing on the health and hygiene “dangers” of air dryers are largely false.

“Research studies have consistently shown that the risk of airborne transmission of viruses - including common respiratory infections such as colds and flu - is minimal in washroom environments,”

However, the stories about hand dryers spreading germs have had no discernible impact on JVD’s hand dryer business, he says. “We put this down to the trust our customers have in our product and to our commitment to providing a hygienic hand drying solution,” he said.

Cross-contamination

According to Pienne, hand dryers are hygienic because they eliminate the risk of cross-contamination that can occur with shared paper towel dispensers or textile towels. “When multiple people use the same towel there is a higher chance of transferring bacteria and viruses,” he says. “Hand dryers by design avoid any direct human contact with surfaces and reduce the risk of cross-contamination. They also provide a powerful and consistent airflow that efficiently dries the hands. And it is essential to remove all moisture as damp hands can promote bacterial growth.”

He claims the company’s new SUPAIR Fresh air dryer to be a world first because it neutralises unpleasant smells while drying the hands. The product is aimed at high-traffic washrooms in busy restaurants, bars, stations and airports.

The paper towel-versus-hand-dryer debate will no doubt rage on, with new claims and counter-claims continually being bandied about online. But commentators maintain there are some compelling reasons for choosing hand dryers.

“They are more environmentallyfriendly than paper towels because they eliminate the need for paper waste, says Pienne. “They also reduce the risk of waste accumulation and clogging in washroom facilities.”

Hand dryers keep the washroom clean, save money, reduce maintenance and are easy to install, according to Udo Sonnenberg. “They are also good for the climate and for your green conscience,” he adds.
