To finish off the joy-filled month The Literary Gems Club with the participation of the Student Artist Club hosted a culminating activity with the theme of LETS Read: Learning Empowering, and Transforming Our Society Through Reading. Students from different grade levels participated in this activity that was hosted from 3:00 PM5:00 PM on November 30, 2023.

The event was led by the Masters of Ceremonies: Abby Jane San Diego, Angelique Reign Del Rosario, Nash Tristan Caures, and Liam John Delgado. The event started with a nationalistic song and an opening prayer, both led by the Student Artist Club. It was then followed by opening remarks led by our school assistant principal, Mrs. Jasthyne Cates B. Salazar.

Ms. Joan I. Potian introduced the guest of honor, Ms. Jacqueline B. Decena, the former head of the English department. Ms. Decena then gave an inspirational message, which stoked the hearts of many. Here, she reminded the students that our learning should go beyond our books, homeworks, and classrooms.

As for the highlight of the event, the parade of characters consisted of multiple talented students from all grade levels representing their sections. The students confidently roamed the hall and performed their famous lines whilst gaining support from the audience.

Then came the awarding portion of the event, which recognized the students who showed their talents and enriched their skills in the following activities: Storytelling for Grade 7, Speech Choir for Grade 8, Readers Theater for Grade 9, Mr. and Mrs Q&A for Grade 10, and Radio Broadcasting for the Senior High School students.

Next is the exciting part that brightened the mood of tired students who stayed to support their sections— the intermission of the Student Artist Club, which featured Love is an Open Door (from “Frozen”) and A Whole New World (from “Aladdin”). And this was followed by a dance number And for the most-awaited part of the program, the awarding of the parade of characters. The top three students from all grade levels were announced, bringing a wave of joy and pride to the parents and classmates of the awarded students.

CHED Discontinues SHS Programs in SUCs and LUCs

To finish off the event, Mr. Michael Teodoro gave his closing remarks, which was followed by the singing of the Roces Hymn.

Despite being piled up with requirements, students still expressed enjoyment in the activities.

“This year's English Month activities were really fun. My

The Commision on Higher Education (CHED) chairman Prospero de Vera III stated the discontinuation of Senior High School in State University and Colleges (SUCs) and Local University and Colleges (LUCs) starting next school year SY 2024-2025

When the K-12 Law was passed in 2016, the education sector of the Philippines had to go to an adjustment period which was also referred to as "transition period”

In accordance with CMO No 32 Series of 2015, CHED and the Department of Education (DepEd) had an agreement that public universities could offer senior high school programs during the transition period beginning SY 2016-2017 until SY 2020-2021 and the students paid through the voucher program, but since the transition period is over CHED confirmed its decision to discontinue the SHS programs among the SUCs and LUCs

Tapos na ang transition period Puno na ang state universities and colleges Kailangan na nilang gamitin ang mga kuwarto at mga teacher Kaya't wala ng basehan para mag-offer sila ng senior high school he said

The Department of Education (DepEd) identified that there are 17,751 grade 11 students currently enrolled in SUCs and LUCs which might be affected

DepEd Spokesperson Undersecretary Michael Poa said that those who might be displaced can still enroll in public schools

"Nonetheless, based on the reports of our Regional Directors, our public schools will be able to accommodate those that may be displaced " she said

CHED Chairman de Vera also added that the DepEd has issued a statement that the voucher program will also be discontinued "except for those entering Grade 12 in SY 2023-2024 to finish their basic education

Teachers of Don Alejandro Roces Sr ScienceTechnology High School gathered at the Multipurpose Hall as they celebrated World Teachers Nationalistic day with the

theme: Together 4 Teachers last October 6, 2023 with Naomi Fabie and Jamie Paat as the masters of ceremonies

The event began with singing the Song followed by a prayer and the Supreme Secondary Learner Government Pres Christian Jericho Reyes formally welcomed everyone with his opening remarks followed by the inspirational message of Dr Marivic B Francisco, the school principal

Cheers and applause filled the air as the Student Artist Club and

Tanghalang Filipino Club performed their intermission number and a video greeting from the students which made the teachers form a smile on their faces

Loyalty awards were given to several teachers as their appreciation for their dedication and non-stop teaching According to a Rocesian DARSSTHS wouldn t be renowned for its

excellence in educating the youth without the teachers.

To keep the teachers entertained, a raffle was conducted where teachers were fortunate to win prizes such as cash, groceries, appliances, and school supplies.

“Yung raffle talaga yung nakakuha ng Atensyon ko kasi para pasko eh, maraming pinapamigay marami

kaming nakuha sa rafle so sobrang thankful kami sa mga parents.” Ms. Roselhoney F. Serraon, a teacher from ESP Department said.

The event wrapped up with the teachers leaving the venue with awards, prizes on their hands, and smiles on their faces after singing the Roces Hymn.

ucial query about Filipino nowledge emerges What xactly do those responsible for ducation want to measure?

Does it require fluency in English, math, science, or reading? Language proficiency exams like the Common European Framework of Reference for languages or the locally managed Department of Education's (DEPED) teacher proficiency test in English would be more suitable if the aim is to produce graduates who can communicate in English for employment across the world

Given that the COVID-19 pandemic forced educational institutions to close for almost two years and shifted instruction to online learning the outcomes of the 2022 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) were not shocking Several years after the PISA assessment in 2018 revealed poor learning competencies among Filipino teenager students education officials had actually discussed whether the nation should retake the test

As participants in education have known for years, the most recent PISA results validate the severity of the issue The outcome was still troubling despite this Between the 79 participating countries and nations in the PISA 2018, the Philippines did not place highly in reading comprehension and came in second in science and mathematics for students This was the first time the Philippines had taken part in the assessment The PISA evaluates a student's ability to solve problems in reading, math, and science in reality

The reading and math comprehension scores of Filipinos showed some improvement but they were still below what is typical for OECD nations The Philippines indicate science performance was third to last

The OECD empha pandemic alone can be blamed for the outcomes in reading, math, and science efficiency The decline in Philippine education quality can be attributed to a number of factors The most recent PISA results only serve to highlight how urgent it is to stop the decline

Educational authorities have been concentrating on after the pandemic learning recovery, as in-person classes only resumed nationwide in November of last year Through online education both educators and students had experienced difficulties During the lockdowns, 10% of basic education students ceased attending classes; many of them did so as a result of the pandemic's devastating effects on the economy Distance learning proved to be too challenging for students and their guardians, who found it essential to become involved in their children's formal education, in addition to the fact that families could not afford provides the basis devices

The most recent PISA according to the OECD is the first extensive investigation into how the pandemic has affected students

Ultimately, individuals should exercise caution when interpreting this as it is only an estimate for the participating countries and varies depending on the pace at which each country learns It demonstrates that reform is necessary and ought to serve as the foundation for the nation's educational system's efforts to address both its advantages and disadvantages

It is not just merely a reflection of our education system, but also a reflection of the future we envision for the

Jeepneys are a staple in Filipino culture fostering creativity and unique variations incorporating religion, kaleidoscopic personalities and other sociocultural aspects to their liking This mode of transportation was known as King of the Road Will it still reign and live up to its fame when the government slowly takes away its crown? We must ensure that though modernization and innovation is a key to progression, there must not be a Filipino citizen left behind irish angel l callueng VALIDATION It has been a long time since the government began the discourse about the national program on Jeepney Modernization It aims to contemporize the public utility vehicle to persist within global and ecological standards Since then transport groups and social organizations have called out the government for the unjust and strenuous terms and requirements set for jeepney operators to comply immediately In an interview with then Vice President Leni Robredo Jeepney drivers are not against the program they just find the terms difficult the cost expensive and the amount to comply and pay short ”; She then added, “ The poorest of the sector, that should be the ones being helped by the government, wont be able to comply due to the difficult terms ” This was her understanding during her dialogue with transport groups during her time in office Jeepney drivers also shared the difficulties they are facing as they are already losing their income due to the costly maintenance of the Jeepney Modernization program This is a clear and evident point of view of jeepney drivers when talked about the program laureanomanuelpineda dethronement Second it will hurt the drivers because they will lose their jobs The only solution that the government sees so that they can continue to work is to make installments of modern jeeps that are almost five times more expensive compared to traditional jeeps How many years will they drive just to pay off their debt while there is no change in their income ” Even with collective efforts to persuade the government to delay the implementation the consolidation pushed through last January 1 2024 affecting the livelihood of 140,000 drivers, 60 000 operators and the lives of 28 5 million commuters As public servants it is their absolute responsibility to ensure that the programs policies and laws they make and implement with the modernization program are compassionate to the lives of the Filipinos who are mostly affected by this They must expand the time for drivers and operators to pay and comply with the terms Provide and offer more elevated subsidies in which drivers and operators can pay off the expensive cost and maintenance for the jeepneys As Filipinos we must be ardent in protecting the culturally significant and daily relevant livelihood of our drivers and operators

Filipinos In an interview with students from Quezon City who commute to and from their school daily they said First of all the fares of commuters in modern jeepneys will be doubled and it will be added to the expenses of our parents who are already struggling to budget their meager wages for other family needs due to the capitalists and the system to workers I can still remember how devastated I was when I saw some articles about the travels of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr (PBBM) using our money and how he abused the power he had for his familys sake For how they used helicopters as transportation for Coldplays concert and how the honored Malacanang Palace became an events place because of their parties, and it didn't add up when Vice President Sara Duterte asked for unreasonable confidential funds The audacity of PBBM and Former President Rodrigo Duterte to throw each other drug use allegations without being afraid of ones shadow made me think Is this really the Bagong Pilipinas they were talking about during the election? This conflict between the two dynasties affects our country Whether they are in good or bad terms, it is the Filipinos who suffer from their incompetence We suffer because of our ineffective government officials It has always been the corrupt politicians vs the people of the Philippines So, I strongly believe that we should do our part as Filipinos open our minds and use our voices to help our poor country Stop being blind, these corruption and dynasties are around now The real battle is the blinded mind and ego of some and the corrupt who keep feeding them vs the truth and our rights The Philippines came in at number 76 out of 81 engaging countries in the most recent evaluation carried out by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) The median Filipino scores in math, science, and reading were all beneath the worldwide mean and essentially unchanged from the 2018 assessment

In a meeting with the Department of Justice (DOJ) officials behind closed doors, Special Rapporteur of the United Nations (UN) Irene Khan discussed issues concerning red-tagging press freedom, and media killings The DOJ Undersecretary Raul Vasquez clarified to Khan in the press briefing that red-tagging in the Philippines is not part of the government's policy

Red tagging isn’t new in this country Over time, it has become a tool to inhibit the media from pursuing the truth It poses a jeopardy to press freedom to muffle the truth and erase the true stories in pages This not only hinders the Filipinos’ right to be aware of society but also weakens the foundation of democracy

Journalists serve as watchdogs of democracy Yet, many issues of media killings are reported including the death of the broadcaster Percy Lapid Addressing the issue of red tagging necessitates a commitment to press freedom and the protection of journalists The DOJ officials to end Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) and has been said that they will reach out to Civil Society Organization (CSO) to handle the issues of red tagging However, the DOJ is a member of the government’s anti-communist task force, the National Task Force known of red tagging communists and activist journalists

have learned the hard way that failure to manage time effectively can have a negative impact on the quality and productivity of work inside and outside of the campus This has an impact not only on individuals, but also on the overall harmony of the class, especially during group activities where the cooperation of every member is in high demand I noticed that an apparent result of this is the increased stress and burnouts that Im sure is being felt by a lot of my schoolmates The pressure to meet deadlines and obligations whether at school or at home clearly has a negative impact on our health, physically and mentally As a learner, I feel like a tripod standing still, facing the consequences of my procrastination, which affects my ability to complete my assignments properly and on time What should I prioritize? Can you provide insights and strategies on how to manage time properly not only for me but also for my fellow Rocesians who are facing similar challenges? Respectfully yours, Liam John V Delgado Grade 10, Emilio Aguinaldo

Das Cha-cha, is currently being prioritized by the government According to House Speaker Martin Romualdez, the 1987 constitution is no longer adaptive to the country’s needs and should be amended immediately President Ferdinand “Bong Bong” Marcos Jr said that the people’s initiative (PI) to amend the 1987 constitution is being acknowledged by the Congress Silent steps in these provisions are seen Spreading signature sheets across the country to seek the support of the people without careful deception and informative statements about this provision Is this really what the Filipinos seek for? Romualdez and House Leaders denied that they were the people behind this people’s initiative Democracy should be maintained by amending the 1987 constitution

Political dynasties and corruption filthy politics are no secret in this country If there is a strong suspicion that the government is abusing its power and is corrupt, how can we trust constitutional reform? The 1987 Constitution was amended to protect human rights and authoritarianism Do we think that the constitution is the problem in this country? Don’t let them use this as a tool to consolidate and abuse the power they have

Charter change is a need, but it is not the most needed action at this time Is the charter change meant to boost the Philippine economy? The primary reason for changing the constitution is to have economic provisions that are favorable to the economy and businesses, especially to foreign investors Thus after amending the 1987 constitution, it asserts that the social and economic problems of the country became worse Some laws aren’t benefiting ordinary people and are not applicable in this digital time Basically, all the problems were blamed on the 1987 constitution Is the Constitution the problem? Or the one’s leading the nation?

The government should heed the people because they need a livelihood and a wage, not Cha-cha It may have good intentions, but the government needs to deal with other pressing issues Cha-cha is not the answer to this economic crisis Why is the Congress focused on amending Cha-cha? After all it was not necessary at all until they made it so Focusing on this change instead of solving the already existing problems in this country is a better alternative to solving the Philippines economic crisis This is not what the Filipinos asked for Hear the Filipinos’ voice; give them what they need a livelihood and rights, not Cha-cha

I am glad that the Department Education is capable of making decisions beneficial to our people. This is a towards creating a better education system in our country. We can be proud and say we brought the chalk back to teachers. This will result in unproductive learning. As a student, I am one of those affected due to my teachers needing to complete these administrative tasks. My teacher being busy definitely affected my ability as a student. Consequently, when I heard of the news regarding the removal of administrative tasks from the workload of teachers. I was overjoyed. Given that our rooms were only equ pped with limited fans and the capacity of people per room were maxim zed which takes me back to the time when I frequently saw articles online about teachers students, and non-teaching personnels experiencing heat strokes headache and the worst wasdy ngbecauseoftheheat Additionally, investing in the development of the worker’s skill set through education is vital Prov ding qual ty techn cal and vocational education and training generates workers whose competencies align w th the needs of the workforce In a mixed economy the government plays a critical role n stab lizing the economy In the case of unemployment the creation of emp oyment opportunities can easily be achieved through the correct a location of funds This represents a rapid growth that the labor force is not able to capac tate This creates a surplus in the job market that results in increased unemployment The urgency of the job scarcity necessitates government intervention But with a global health crisis that necessitated stringent lockdown measures, the workforce collapsed This caused a domino effect of bus ness after business having to close down their operations exacerbating the job scarcity This coup ed with the government s inability to satisfactorily address these ssues warranted the GDP growth rate to dip to an all-time low of -9 5%, and the unemployment rate to rise to 17 6% in the year 2020 These challenges continue to persist in the present day with the most recent statistic from the Ph lippine Statistics Authority (PSA) estimating the unemployment rate of the country to be at 3 6% Meaning that rough y 1 83 mil ion Fi ipinos rema n out of work, affect ng 457 500 Filipino families espite the best efforts of the government to bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic the economic consequences remain In the years preceding the pandemic the Philippines enjoyed a relatively stable economy; with the Duterte presidency marking the highest level of economic growth since 1986, averaging a 6 6 percent Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate for the years 2017 and 2018 However, government initiatives cannot be effective without the participation of its citizens Public involvement s at a crucial juncture in stimulating healthy economic growth C tizens can provide valuable insight that a ds the government in developing programs addressing unemployment The lack of income affects these low-to-no ncome households ability to invest in basic means of survival such as housing, healthcare, education, and even nourishment, sinking them into further poverty Beyond individual households, the unemp oyment rate also poses a direct impact on society as a whole With more and more Fil p nos unemployed this leads to a shortage in tax revenue wh ch l mits the government s spending ab ity on publ c serv ce programs and projects This includes programs and pro ects for welfare, infrastructure, public transportation, education, etc One ma or cause of the shortage of job opportunit es in the Philippines is the lack of technical skills and knowledge of Filipino workers intensified by the disruptions brought about by the pandemic The current education system continues to fa l short of equipping Fil p no workers with the adequate competencies demanded by the employment market This leads to fewer employment opportunit es for the everyday Filipino Another factor s the overpopulation problem in the Phi ippines The PSA projects the population to increase to 142 mill on by 2045 from 118 mi ion in 2024, translating to 3 F lipinos born per minute Unemployment is a mult faceted issue dr ven by var ous socio-economic factors It stems from a ack of satisfactory government interventions in both the education and emp oyment of the workforce in a struggling economy fo lowing the ramif cations of the COVID-19 pandemic However, through government m tigation and citizen nvolvement a pos tive impact on not only the economy but also the livelihoods and futures of 457 500 F lipino fami ies can be achieved OPINION VOL. AUG2023 FEB 2024 Stressed, overworked, exhausted, these are the words I would use to describe public school teachers in the Philippines. For the past few years, teachers have been pushed into positions where they have to take on administrative tasks without getting any additional pay. As a student studying in a “Public” Science High School in the midst of the dry season is never easy This means that teachers will be able to give their full attention in teaching their students. This will lead to a more conducive learning environment. Additionally, teachers will have a more healthy work-life balance due to the reduction in their workload. I can still clearly remember my experience last school year around Apri and May and how I coped with our situation It wasnt easy for us I remember chugging my water bottle yet still thirsty for more when I couldnt even finish my water on a normal day That was in the middle of our festival dance task so we really needed to do extra with our movements and that didn’t help with our situation at all That experience stilllingersatthebackofmymindand I surely don’t want to experience that again I believe that ad usting the school year has its ownprosandcons Studentswi lnotexperiencedry season in school because of the adjustment but lessons will be tackled sw ftly and activit es will eat them up It seems like the Department of Educat on (DepEd)stillhassome polic es tofol owevenwhen th ssituationisnotclearlyallaboutknow edgenow; the stake of our future generation and our teachers areatrisk Nevertheless me you, andourcountryscitizens should help one another to help our voices be heard Stand our ground this is a serious matter aboutourhealth That scenario made me th nk do government officialsrea lycareforus?Ormaybetheydon’thave the guts to do something urgent about t because they havent experienced any ssues regarding heat because of their air-conditioned offices from our money? It is unjustifiable for the president to say that he doesn't want himself to be the cause of traffic Because we're living in the Philippines, we're ranked fifth in the world’s most trafficked country Even if he went out to the public dressed unrecognizable traffic would still be there What he did can be considered an abuse of power since he used the official’s resources for a non-official activity The thing that he did cannot be justified by any statement And obviously his statement was only said to make us believe that what he did was for the sake of the Filipino people when in fact it's for his and his family's

I murmur beneath my breath to the conscious fact that I clearly said the same exact phrase several minutes ago. I knew that the closest thing I had to intense focus was betting on another raindrop sliding down my window to see if it would reach the frame before all the others did. It was a cycle I was starting to hate, or rather, a cycle that became the root of my growing spite for myself.

Am I studying properly? Are my habits actually helping me the way they’re supposed to? Is what I’m doing worth my time? Do I even deserve the break my physique has been wanting? To all the questions, I was left puzzled. It was like the voice in my head was telling me no. Except…

It was a winter night, cold and dark Everyone is just lining up and minding their own business A train with 10 sections has arrived There is a group of operators and surprisingly, they have strict rules They separated the people into different sections, and you were put on the last Section 10 Confused everyone was experiencing mixed emotions as they entered the train Some are smiling, and some are anxious You asked one of the people, and they just walked like the world is on mute You asked again but still no response Bewildered from what s happening Told yourself to just get over it and walk to your section Along your walk, you keep seeing people terrified, anxious, and still in sections 6, 7, 8, and 9 Wondering why?

Then finally reached your section Felt the loud gloomy aura from all the people in there This time, you asked one of them What has happened here? Why does everyone look so afraid?” and luckily he answered “They don’t care about the people here They treat us unfairly because of our status They hate us Surprised to hear this and felt miserable Now, you look at the surroundings

I thoroughly liked the concept of I thoroughly liked the concept of Catch-Up Fridays for January as it Catch-Up for as it focuses on reading With the weight of focuses on With the weight of academic obligations and pressure academic and pressure constantly on my shoulders, I’ve barely on my shoulders I’ve barely made time to skim over my bookshelf made time to skim over my bookshelf and add the weight of a book on my add weight of a book on my hands But the first month of Catch-Up But of Catch-Up Fridays gave me the opportunity to Fridays gave me the opportunity to take the weight of academics off my take the of off my shoulders for a bit and instead take shoulders for and instead take upon the pleasant weight of an pleasant weight an insightful book My greatly favored My favored Fridays became a thing of more Fridays became a thing more specialty to me as each hour passed specialty to me as each hour passed with me reading a book with me reading a book

As Catch-Up Fridays prevail we can As Catch-Up Fridays prevail we can only wait for the answer to the wait for the answer to the question: Will this really bridge our Will this really our country’s learning gap? learning gap?

The place was rusting, and less space because of how many people were in there Disappointing Slowly sat near the window and saw how everyone was sticking to one ’ s knitting The breeze inside the room was screeching You are staring outside at how the frozen trees can be as cold as a glacier fell from where you are right now Tired and fell asleep Then dreamt of what happened to you back in school You were always put in the higher section Scavengers of endeavors Harbingers of success The Elites Every student was amazed parallel to being intimidated by your position Got the best grades and performance that any student could wish for All of the attention was grabbed by you and your section But there was something inside that had been marking you and your classmates lives in deep regret

In those people who honor you there was also something growing in them Something that can’t be undone Something that lives in every person who admires you Something like expectations These thoughts have been the ones that made your section do the hardest of the hardest and the ones that averted you from taking it down a notch You developed pressure Developed the fear of failing Just went to the path where everything was about trying to meet expectations Sleepless nights exerting effort in everything, and casually draining yourself Didn t get to experience or even see what everything looked like in the lower sections because teachers hindered you from doing so You wondered back then “What if I wasn’t put in here? What would happen to me? Will they still think of me as this?”

Felt deep sorrow and tears falling from your eyes back then I m tired I m confused and I don t know what to do anymore! All of these whispers are just too insane to handle,” you added in complete distress

Then you finally wake up, gasping, and the same feeling is flowing through your body Everyone is there around you trying to see if everything s fine Anxiously staring One of them asked,

Are you okay?

Then you burst into tears and hugged them Everything just flashed in your mind as you felt the biggest realization ever

The trip is done, and everyone just walks off the train like different people having different agendas You realize people shouldn’t be treated this way and so are students They need to stop the expectations that pressure students from being as free as they can be They need to break the barrier that only results in students thinking differently of each other They need to utilize an education system where every student is treated and educated equally fairly and free from high and low expectations Because in the end, everyone will be living their own lives in their own unique ways that ll eventually lead to their own success that even their astral body will meet the same fate as their physical one Without expectations and pressures Only in mind that they are the best version of themselves and can align the stars in the midst of diversity

And of course failure happens We faced challenges that shaped us to grow Life has always taught us that it is a series of struggles and setbacks Sometimes, you will just think of giving up because you have a lot of work to do But underneath those are victories and triumphs that we share As I continued my journey as an EIC it was a delightful feeling to see my Flint staffers have their victories The joy of seeing the team grow and witnessing their triumphs I experience, their dedication, and the passion

Being in this position isn’t easy It wasn’t about just writing articles; it was about writing memories I became stronger each day as an EIC I exchanged cries, laughs, victories, and memories with The Flint, which gave my high school journey a spark of light Teamwork became our foundation and the virtue of the news Integrity became our cornerstone, the accent of the youth, and the echo of the truth

Being an Editor-in-Chief is not a destination but a continuous journey of exploration.

Stepping down in this role I held for two years is like a wave of downheartedness Imagine that I spent my whole high school journey with The Flint, starting to be just a writer and becoming the highest position I spent two years trying to build a legacy for our publication The trust that was put in me is a great source of gratitude especially to our school paper adviser who trusted me to hold this role for two terms, Sir Edmark It’s an honor to achieve this kind of legacy

Passing the torch on to my next successor is an honor I can confidently say that I left a legacy not just a collection of articles and trophies, but a dedication, resilience, and commitment to this journalism To the future Editor-in-Chief as you step into this role remember that you hold a promising position that needs to be filled with dedication You have your team at your back And I will always hope that you learned a lot in the span of my term

Being the Flint is an honor We all aim to be the best campus journalists, so continue to be a virtue of the news, the voice of the youth, and the echo of the truth!

The popularity of micro-trends grew through the isolation of teenagers globally With the kickstart of categorizing people in sides like ‘Alt TikTok’ or ‘Straight TikTok’ during the 2020 TikTok storm It only grew from there as the masses commodified the niche and obscure; what would have been simple thrifts and treasures would be sold in Instagram shops at fourteen thousand pesos

With the constantly emerging sub-groups and trends people like to secure themselves into an identity that doesn’t hold true to themselves Fitting into a collective personality that was bred from stereotypes and standards Take for example the Y2K Aesthetic; it isn t representative of what the fashion was in the 2000s yet it grew to be a style of its own

Living throughout the years of Rodrigo Roa Dutertes presidential term is a battle fought by those living in the dumpsters He

Although nothing is wrong with his intentions, the way he did it became the issue He fought a war with war He abused the position that led him to withdraw the Philippines, where the rest of the people like him are being held accountable overstepped the power he holds He crossed the limits where boundaries were made highly

He took greed in removing criminals in the country

The International Criminal Court

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is what keeps national leaders accountable for the actions they take to maintain peace and justice in their country They stand for morality and fairness So, withdrawing our country from the ICC really means that something is wrong with how our leaders respond to the justice system in our country

War on Drugs

That order by the former president, Duterte, became the reason why our country has withdrawn from the ICC The war on drugs that happened was against human rights as it went through the process of extrajudicial killings It goes through the process of directly executing criminals, especially those who are high on drugs, without a legal framework Basically, not implementing the rights that every person has

Five years It has been five years since we have withdrawn And throughout those five years, abuse of power had become common for officials Unlawful laws are here and there Unpassed safety and protection bills because of the bias, misogyny, and discrimination of officials here and there

And who made those higher-ups accountable for their inhumane acts? No one But now, it has been a hot topic whether the ICC should be back or not Is this now the time when they will be held liable for what theyve done?

The Senate and Congress have been stirring this tea to the ground as the vice president and daughter of the former president, Sara Duterte, is boiling hot with this issue Having the ICC back means to investigate furthermore the doings made by the former president Duterte while he was still the mayor of Davao In which thousands were affected by his order

Although it has been clear that the ICC has no jurisdiction over the Philippines no jurisdiction to investigate and open cases for the former president judiciary and lawmakers want to reconsider as it urges the government to rethink The Philippine government failed to implement human rights for every Filipino, so someone higher needs to step in The Philippine government became one-sided in investigating the killings, so the International Criminal Court has opened itself to looking thoroughly at crimes against humanity If the citizens are being held accountable, the people in positions should also be

"Habang may tatsulok at sila ang nasa tuktok

The Philippines is a democratic country where the government is a circus and the elected are clowns It is important for them to watch themselves to see how they perform It is important that someone keeps them in order to make sure no one gets hurt for their jokes If the audience gets to behave while living the moment of the clowns performances, then the clowns need to learn to play with fire carefully They need to put their act right

Now, as the ICC returns, is it hello, accountability and good-bye, corruption? Hello, accessibility, and good-bye inhumane actions? Hello, transparency and visibility, and good-bye, backward evolution?

“You’re not learning; you’re just memorizing

We should start to use our learning and stop memorizing for the sake of passing

AUG2023 024 Hangga 'tmaramiang lugmoksa KAHIRAPAN AtangHUSTISIYA ay paralangsa MAYAMAN Periodical Exams: Measuring Knowledge or Holding Memories? Periodic exams quizzes, or other assessment tests are part of education as they are believed to be crucial in assessing and evaluating each student’s learning Most people believed that those exam results were essential in identifying areas of improvement for a student and testing their critical and logical thinking
sound of a ticking clock echoed in my ears as I kept eye with my test paper in front of me, trying to remember what terms and lessons Id memorized last night Blank walls white ceilings and hollow halls were complete descriptions of my mind as I heard an unknown voice whispering, trying to say something And its whispers are growing revealing its cryptic message
for the sake of passing ” Flooding and showering me with different thoughts and feelings as I completely hear what it says, making me wonder If we tend to memorize our lessons and not review them to understand them, then what is the real purpose of those exams? Is it to assess our knowledge of the topic or test how good we are at memorizing?
Yet, a shadow of the goal that aims to have better or higher grades envelops the wide minds of academic landscapes If these periodical exams are the ultimate basis for assessing ones knowledge, then the weight of expectations may pressure a student to perform well in exams and concentrate more on memorizing than on understanding the information and truly comprehending it If most students prefer short-term memory in terms of knowledge rather than long-term memory of information, then the exams will not be an accurate reflection of their knowledge Exams should not be memory tests but rather assessments of learned abilities and applied knowledge If all we do is memorize the material to pass and not study how will we ever become competent? Reality shattered the illusion of waves crashing against the shore after a deep ocean-like realization Indeed, were struggling to answer our exams since we tend to use our memories rather than the knowledge we have learned Maybe some still answer with the knowledge and learning that they have but most do not Now allow me to restate those inner whispers:

Although not a new idea, first appearing in the 40s and 50s, AI has significantly improved With new AI tools, from making art to essays, this is the time when a futuristic concept finally becomes a reality Some feared that this new technology could take their jobs, and have sparked many controversies the same way the Stepped Reckoner was feared when it was new Now with such delicate technology, what are the uses of it? How will such technology affect our daily lives? And is it really the future of science and technology?

art and photos based on a person's preference Other types of tools can help with specific tasks and are highly flexible This is one of the reasons why AI is beneficial However, due to this, AI can be a dangerous tool if put in the wrong hands Recently, it has been utilized for scams and even impersonating celebrities and powerful people Because of this, it is always necessary to be careful on the internet and follow netiquette

The essential purpose of a claw hammer is to drive nails, yet it can be manipulated to create havoc The same goes for today s artificial intelligence However, modern AI is still new and can further advance in the future The same goes for the Stepped Reckoner Modern artificial intelligence is still new, yet it can lead to further innovation in our understanding of technology and possibly set the new path for digital technology Truly, artificial intelligence will lead to the future of technology

rees are the ones that embellish our world into the most habitable place in the galaxy. Living things benefit so much in their function. They filter oxygen, isolate greenhouse gasses, maintain temperature, absorb pollutants, and secrete food. Taking care of them has become one of the lifetime responsibilities that will protect us from the detrimental effects it will bring to our nature, particularly climate change.

Thus, humans are also entitled to produce more of them. We can say that tree planting is one of the sustainable approaches we can take to mitigate climate change.

Don Alejandro Roces Senior Science and Technology High School (DARSSTHS) has once again done a great job in doing this small, yet remarkable activity held on the whole campus premises. Starting with the beloved principal, Dr. Marivic B. Francisco, who planned this environment-friendly activity. Then, the other school admins, heads, and student leaders took the initiative to volunteer and make this activity successful. This event proved promising as a clean-up drive and waste segregation activities were implemented. It was a moment of triumph and a sense of achievement for everyone involved as they accomplished one of the orders that mother nature has always asked for and saw themselves as the prospects of what the future holds for our environment and our people. i T

Climate Change has been one of the challenging prospects encountered by every country. It refers to the long-term shift in temperature and weather patterns of a specific area due to enhanced greenhouse gas levels (GHGs) known as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) reaching our atmosphere. These cause a variety of catastrophic calamities that immensely affect the entire human race, such as soil erosion, floods, and global warming. Trees have been the dominant wardens that kept these effects from happening.

Hope for the near-extinct Northern White Rhino

Just this year, scientists have achieved a major achievement for wildlife conservation: the first-ever rhino pregnancy through in vitro fertilization (IVF), representing a huge step forward in the effort to save Africa's Northern White Rhinoceros from the brink of extinction. After years of devoted research, this positive result shows the potential of assisted reproductive technology to help critically endangered species.

Scientists recently announced the success of a lab-assisted pregnancy involving the implantation of a Southern White Rhino embryo into a surrogate mother named Curra. While the surrogate, unfortunately, passed away from an unrelated bacterial infection a couple of months into her 16-month pregnancy, the discovery provided important proof of concept for the possibility of in vitro fertilization in rhino conservation.

The international team of scientists leading this research, known as the “BioRescue Project,” sees this achievement as a major step towards ensuring the survival of not only the Northern White Rhino, but also other endangered rhino species. The success of the embryo transfer and early stages of pregnancy, documented exclusively by National Geographic for an upcoming Explorer special, means the method can now be used for the critically endangered Northern White Rhino.

The Northern White Rhino is in danger of extinction since it has no males left, and the two that still exist are old females living in a heavily guarded reserve in Kenya called Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Urgent conservation measures are needed to save these unique species from extinction since the illegal demand for rhino horns is mostly to blame for the decrease in their population.

The achievement of a rhino pregnancy through in vitro fertilization marks an important milestone in the ongoing battle against extinction. The BioRescue Project's success in preserving the Northern White Rhino's genetic material provides hope for the future of rhino conservation. With persistent efforts from experts, there is hope that these magnificent and unique animals will one day return to roam the same areas that they previously called home.

A curious and new engine design which claims to be a one-stroke engine has been making its rounds around the engineering internet, and for a good reason According to INNengine based in Granada, Spain, the engine does not have a crankshaft, a valve train, nor a cylinder head Not only that, but their website also claims that the engine is 70% smaller and lighter at 38 kg, has almost no vibrations and is cheaper to make while still delivering almost the same power as a conventional engine that weighs far greater than it Many people s attention has been piqued

to remain the same all throughout its cycle Let s go back to the bicycle example as the pedals rotate the leverage between the leverage between the downward force changes it is the easiest to pedal when the pedals are in a certain position than in another because the length of the lever relative to your legs changes By employing a slope and track setup also known as a swashplate setup for the pistons to move in instead of a crankshaft the lever never changes because the slope which never changes angle creates the leverage for the pistons Not only that but this moving parts and requires less space than a crankshaft This unique design allows for the improved efficiency while minimizing its space

The engine is without a doubt unique however many express concerns about its long-term reliability Most supposedly the swashplate and roller are one of the biggest points of failure as rollingelements generally undergo lots more stress than a bearing would in a crankshaft The pistonswould have to put intense pressure on the rollers while spinning at a speed multiple times greater than the engine s output rotation Still there have been multiple notable applications for the design as variants of the design are being developed for use in the aerospace industry as well as hybrid cars which use an internal combustion engine to produce electricity for motors While there is a chance that the engine could not reach widespread use much like its predecessors the

swashplate and opposed piston engine designs it could still find some use in other industries otherthan the automotive industry Even if it becomesniche like those previous designs it will still have

a noteworthy contribution to technology andengineering with its outstanding efficiency in power, weight, and space

While its benefits seem to be quite promising, the engine is still in testing and is not under massmass-production With the advantages that it offer offers, the design will surely find some use in power in power generation and other industries Even if it fails to reach widespread use the design would still be a great contribution to the world of engineering

stars However, the blackholes from this process are usually way smaller than the old unfathomably large blackholes we find in places like the center of galaxies In the search for the cause of this phenomena, are blackholes placed inside the massive stars in the early universe a sensical hypothesis?

A Quasi-star is a hypothetical type of star that contains a black hole at its core being powered by the material falling in it instead of nuclear fusion

In the early universe when lighter elements permeated the universe young stars also known as “protostars”, could grow in such large scales to an extent where the sheer size of the star causes matter to press harder and harder into the core thus turning it into a blackhole

Despite a blackhole now taking the place of a core in a Quasi-star, the outer matter does not immediately get sucked into the blackhole due to the immense amount of pressure However this made the lifespan of a Quasi-star very short their entire life lasting around only 7 million years, or about 0 88% of our Sun s lifespan
