EDITORS LETTER
greetings!
our brush with greatness Welcome to the second issue of d’Arte! Working on the magazine has proved to be a challenging but fulfilling experience for the d’Arte team. With the success of our premiere issue we wanted to continue in the same vein; promoting the brilliant work of Carnegie Mellon students and discussing the importance of fashion and design in our culture. We decided to deliberately release d’Arte’s second issue on Carnegie Mellon’s homecoming weekend as a means of celebrating the school we all love to hate. (Despite the fact that the majority of us chose to apply and attend this school.) Though most of us may spend our time here full of overscheduled days and 4 | d’ a r t e

sleepless nights while looking at our mounting pile of student debt and wondering if it will all be worth it. We must remember we came here for a reason. Our “homecoming” issue was inspired by Carnegie Mellon’s newly acquired status as a ”New Ivy”. At a school that has earned a reputation for innovation and inter-disciplinary collaboration, we are often categorized as a school full of “nerds” and “geeks”. Although the majority of us may be “geeks” in our right, whether we are a theatregeek, design-nerd, math-dweeb, or a computer-freak; we chose to come to cmu because we knew we would find our place at a school that encourages exploration. d’Arte magazine itself was created through collaboration across
different disciplines: the humanities and the arts. Our issue will delve into the destruction of stereotypes that accompanies our status as a highly ranked university. We want to show that even though we are all intelligent individuals who are passionate about our varying interests, we do no fit into box. Join us as we “break the mold”. Expect great things from us in the following pages and in our upcoming issues! Enjoy!

SENIOR. COSTUME DESIGNER. STYLIST. HAUTE-COUTURE
MILLINER. PETER DOLKAS HAS SEVERAL CREATIVE IDENTITIES. SO LUCKILY FOR HIM, HE FINDS INSPIRATIONS
IN ALL SORTS OF PLACES FROM ALL SORTS OF PEOPLE. For his first hat collection, Dolkas tapped into his surroundings and his sense of humor to inspire a typically underrated but visual form of art. “The gold wire birdcage hat I think was inspired by an antique birdcage that some friends have in their apartment. The pancake hat I designed after a hat that was worn commonly during medieval times and dubbed a ‘pancake hat.’ So I just decided

he Ivy League. These words define the dreams of hundreds of thousands of students world-wide. The Ivy League. These revered universities are viewed as the epitome of higher education. The Ivy League. Since 1952, these institutions have produced some of the world’s greatest leaders and innovators. The Ivy League has competition. Newsweek has recognized Carnegie Mellon as a “New Ivy”, a distinction awarded because of our dedication to education and research. recognition mean? As Carnegie Mellon students, we’re being recognized for our hard work, the academic rigor that we suffer for, and the passion we have for what we do. To be noted for our excellence is a bonus, but even without the “New Ivy” title, Carnegie Mellon still goes about its business producing top notch students in all fields. Our alumni have gone off to accomplish incredible things. Academy Award winning composer, Stephen Schwartz (A’68), composed some of the most well know musicals, Godspell and Wicked, as well as some of our favorite childhood films; Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Prince of Egypt, and but what does this

The legendary Andy Warhol (A’49), one of the most respected and ground-breaking artists once walked the maze like halls of the cfa. Our alum have excelled outside the world of art and design as well, our school boasts 17 Nobel Laureates, 10 Turing Award Winners, and dozens of business juggernauts as former students. more than just alum that have accomplished great things. Students here choose to excel not only in their classes, but in their outside endeavors. We do stay up all night studying for classes, but we also sacrifice sleep to work on Carnival booths or push buggies in the wee hours of the morning. Students like Peter Dolkas pursue their creative passions by constructing a line of couture hats or the d’Arte team (shameless bragging, we know) creating a fashion magazine in their spare time. Although you may hear musical theatre majors warbling show tunes across the however, we have

The cacophony of several instruments being playing at once that can be heard outside of cfa at any given hour will soon be part of a symphony playing at Carnegie Hall. At a school that values undergraduate research and inter-disciplinary collaboration; cmu’s Inspire Innovation campaign supports the endeavors of its students by raising funds to “fuel our innovative education and research.” Our past and current accomplishments prove that we don’t need an Ivy League title to know we are here to do great things.

make-up magician
where did you learn how to do makeup?
My mom was a makeup artist on and off for years and it was something I always loved. She would teach me little things when I was younger just for fun, and when I wanted to learn more seriously she trained me as she would any other apprentice.

worrying more about what goes on your resume than on your face.
Makeup seems unnecessary and ultra-girly, which it is, but in the job market now it doesn’t just matter what’s on your resume. Whether we like to admit it or not, we judge people daily on their appearance, and makeup can be used to enhance that. So, really, you’re increasing your chances of being better received, even though it may seem a little superficial. looking fresh-faced and well-rested when you’re low on sleep.
Concealer!!!! It’s the best thing that ever happened to makeup, bronzer coming in at a close second. There are many shading tricks you can use to minimize under eye bags and darkness. Also, emphasizing your eyelashes can make you look more awake, especially if you curl them. affording quality makeup without having deep pockets.
Makeup does not have to be pricey!! A lot of what I use at photoshoots and everyday on myself is from Rite Aid. I believe the only products that should be bought at Sephora are foundation, concealer and certain eye shadow palettes- other than that go cheap! But it’s about knowing which manufacturers are best. future plans?
