CYCLETY CLUB DARTFORD By Louisa Beyer The rides are free. You will need to have a bike that is safe to ride, and we will ask you always to wear a helmet while riding with us. We welcome all ages (under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian) and our rides are suitable for almost any bike. We advertise our rides on our Facebook page (Dartford Cyclety Club) https://www.facebook. com/profile.php?id=100084433303841 or you can email cycletyfun@gmail.com. It is widely accepted that you never forget how to ride a bike, and we find this to be true. If you never got around to learning to ride, or have lost a bit of confidence, contact us via cycletyfun@ gmail.com and we can let you know the best way to get help. Even if it seems too cold at the moment to even think of cycling, do get in touch and we can all get ready for warmer days.
Dartford Cyclety Club is a friendly community cycling club which organises relaxed bike rides starting from Dartford Library on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. During the winter the rides will be fairly short; usually around 10 miles taking about 2 and a half hours. These are meant to be fun, but any healthy side-effects are entirely intentional. Our rides are easy paced, and we avoid roads as much as possible, mainly using cycle routes and shared paths. No-one gets left behind, and all rides are led by qualified leaders trained by Cycling UK. All rides include a coffee stop; cyclists are known for their love of cake, but it is not compulsory. Many people find that they gradually get a bit fitter, and want to go a bit further. When the weather gets a little warmer, we will be doing some longer rides, some of them starting away from Dartford. The shorter Saturday rides will continue through the year. 10

ENTERTAINMENT
BRIAN CONLEY: THE 3RD FAREWELL TOUR... TO DATE air and see where it lands. Is it just you on stage or will you have some company? I have a very special guest who I’m very excited about and that is my daughter Lucy. She’s a fine singer and she’s even making her first steps into comedy, and I’m a bit worried because she is funnier than me. She obviously takes after her mother. But she’s my special guest on the show and we’ve got a lovely little video up front, from when she was two years old. We sang Somewhere Beyond the Sea and of course it was a total car crash but very funny. We’ll be singing it again on stage now that she’s 21. There are no other guests, though, because I’m a total egomaniac. You’ve been in so many musicals and pantos with huge casts. Isn’t it a bit lonely when you’re flying solo? Not at all. I love the freedom it gives you and I think it’s such a big honour when people have paid good money to see you. They’ve probably had to get a babysitter (although knowing my audience they’ve probably got someone looking after their grandkids), they’ve booked the car park, they’re sitting there and they want to have fun. I always tell them ‘You better enjoy me because there’s no one else coming on’ and I really want them to walk away and go ‘We had a right laugh tonight’.
What can audiences expect from the new tour? It’s a potpourri of entertainment and it’s as much fun as we can all have with our clothes on. It’s a celebration of an international superstar, namely me! It’s just fun. We’re using a video screen, so I’ve got clips that I want to show everyone and just talk about this illustrious career that I’m celebrating this year, which would you believe is 50 years in show business? Let me explain: I went to stage school, I was about 12 when I got my Equity card and I haven’t stopped working since. It’s a great name for a tour. When were the two previous farewell tours, if indeed there It’s described as an evening of comedy, were any? music and entertainment. How will you be Well, there was Brian Conley: Still The Greatest incorporating all three into the show? Entertainer - In His Price Range and Brian Predominantly it’s driven by comedy but I’ve Conley’s One-Man Show Plus Support. But done eight musicals - six of them in the West really it’s just a funny name. I looked at the End - so we sort of pay tribute to that to close Rolling Stones and I thought ‘Oh God, how the first half. There are a few songs along the many farewell tours are they going to do?’ It way but comedy is my first love. I can’t wait made me laugh and I thought ‘You know what? for people to see it because it’s a proper, high- I’m gonna call mine my third farewell tour to energy show. I’m not just gonna stand there date’. So in other words, I will do another one. with a microphone. It’s a production. And in Entertainers don’t retire; the phone just stops the second half I’ll take questions from the ringing. It’s in me. If I’m on holiday I might be audience and I’m happy to answer anything, in a hotel lobby where no one speaks a word of whether it’s about comedy, my favourite show English but there’s a piano player there. my kids and my wife go ‘Please don’t!’ It’s like Tourette’s. I love being out there and I always say I was born to sing and everything else I learned along the way. As a young child singing was always my thing and as I got older the comedy sort of developed.
to host the last one of the 20th century was a huge honour, as was meeting The Queen and all the Royals. I also got to make The Queen laugh. At the beginning of one of the shows they said ‘Please welcome your host and compare, Brian Conley’. I walked out, took a bow at the front, then I moved to the left to where the Royal box was, I took one too many steps and went bang straight into the pit. Obviously there was crash mats and it was all planned but The Queen wet herself. My wife, who could see into the Royal box from the circle, said Her Majesty did not stop laughing for ages and I love that. Other highlights include playing Al Jolson on stage, starring in Barnum, playing Fagin in Oliver! and getting to meet Dolly Parton three times when I was in 9 to 5. Then there’s being in EastEnders because they are such a lovely bunch.
Presumably you’ll still be making time in the schedule for panto again this year? Absolutely. I’m in Milton Keynes in Cinderella. It’s a wonderful big show and I play Buttons, which is the best comedy role ever. I love pantomime because it plays to all the skills, whether it’s acting, singing, dancing, ad libbing, topical humour or having fun with the little kids when they get up on stage because you never know what they’re going to say. There’s a real art to it when you’re chatting to a four-year-old and during the the show I always make sure the comedy comes out of the moment. I don’t try They say that laughter is the best medicine. and shoehorn anything in. Agreed? Yes, unless of course you’re diabetic, then How would you sum up the live experience insulin is the best medicine. If you’re lying on vs working on screen? the floor in a diabetic coma, the last thing you You get the immediate feedback and audience want is me standing over you telling jokes. But sort of writes it because they’ll tell you laughter is like a workout and it releases happy what’s good and what’s not. When you’re in endorphins. There’s also something about a big EastEnders or something you might get the crowd. You can watch a comedy film at home director coming up going ‘Oh that was nice’ and enjoy it but if you’re in a cinema and there but there’s something special about being live, are lots of people laughing it’s contagious. It’s especially in this day and age. I tell everyone: the same with a live audience and very much so ‘You’re gonna go home and gonna talk about with my act because it’s very much like ‘Oh my this because you spent the last two and a half god what’s he gonna do next?’ hours not looking at your phone. This has been a shared experience for you and your kids, and What makes you laugh yourself? often do you get that now? It’s all fractured, I like funny people. I’m not keen on wordsmiths, with maybe one child upstairs and the other I’m keen on people with funny bones like one in the kitchen.’ Another magic thing about Tommy Cooper and Peter Sellers. Tommy performing live is that it’s dangerous. It’s a place Cooper was one of the greats and he didn’t even where things could go wrong and you could need to perform. He would just stand there and forget what you’re going to do and things like you’d laugh. that. It leaves people on the edge of their seat going ‘Ooh this is exciting’. You perform live, present, act, sing and dance. What aren’t you any good at? It’s hard to believe you’re in your early 60s. I’m not very good at playing instruments. When What’s your secret? I was a child I remember my family took me for I’m young at heart. I really am. I’m like a big kid guitar lessons and I could just about bash out who just enjoys what I do for a living and I’m Little Brown Jug but that was it. I’m dyslexic, so very grateful that I’ve managed to survive and at school I was put into the remedial class and I diversify. As well as comedy I’ve done drama, was very confused as to why I couldn’t keep up. I’ve done five films over my illustrious career, My way of getting through that was by making lots of musicals which I’ve loved doing, and telly, everyone laugh. I was the class joker and but whether it’s game shows or chat show or things I didn’t know it at the time but actually I was like The Grimleys. learning my profession. RECIPE
EASY FRUIT LOAF
By Debbie Dickinson from the Little Lavinia Bakery
I really love my collection of easy – and quick to prepare – cakes and bakes recipes. Sometimes, you don’t have the time to follow a fancy recipe and this is one of my fruit cake recipes for just such an occasion.
heat the oven to 160 °C (Fan 140 °)
As always, its adaptable so if you don’t have brown sugar you can use caster sugar. And feel free to use any mix of dried fruit you have in your cupboard. Maybe you have a bag of mixed dried fruit leftover from Christmas. My kids always loved sultanas so sometimes I’ll just use those and the recipe works just as well.
Stir the Mixed Spice into the Flour.
You will need: 175g Margarine 150g Soft Brown Sugar 2 Large Eggs 175g Self Raising Flour 175g Dried Mixed Fruit 1 tsp. Mixed Spice 2 tsp Orange Juice (optional)
Spoon the mixture into the prepared loaf tin and level the mix slightly. It will self-level in the oven so no need to spend too much time on this.
In a large mixing bowl mix the Margarine and Brown Sugar together until well mixed and creamy.
Add in the Egg, followed by the Spiced Flour– a spoonful at a time – to help combine the mix. Once all the Flour has been added, stir in the Dried Fruit and the Orange Juice (if using).
Bake for 50-60 minutes until a skewer/knife inserted into the cake comes out of the cake clean. Leave in the tin to cool.
What to do: Enjoy! xxx Grease and line a loaf tin with baking paper. Pre24

SPORTS NEWS
Everton and Nottingham Forest now face new cases of alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules. With Everton already docked 10 points and awaiting an appeal against that previous charge, it raises some potentially tricky issues, as any decision that ends in a points deduction is virtually certain to be subject to an appeal, even as a pre-emptive strike by the clubs - and that brings the potential for chaos as there is no guarantee any appeal would be heard before the final games of the Premier League season on 19 May. In terms of actually playing matches, that is when the season ends. But in terms of regulation, the 2023-24 season remains ‘live’ until the annual general meeting in June when the relegated clubs transfer their certificates. It is this point at which everything has to be determined. So… that means even after the final game of the season, we may not know who is to be relegated… surely that uncertainty will play on the minds of the players and staff and affect the outcome of games between now and 19th May?

LIFE UNDER THE STAIRS
THE AGEING MEMOIRS Is purple the new black? By Jane Stevenson
Do we ever grow out of wearing black? I’m sure many of us went through such a phase in our youth. Whether a Goth, Emo, Student, Wiccan or whatever, the black dress code was de rigueur.
His observation followed a totally preventable accident involving me, a wheeled chair, a classic rock CD, and my inability to sit still.
In past years, opening my wardrobe was like gazing at a bruise! Loads of black, a bit of grey and dark blue. Constantly wearing black became a way of life. My daily uniform of a black skirt, neutral shirt and black cardigan ensured I remained in the background of events. I was very overweight also, and kidded myself wearing black ticked my slimming and elegant boxes. Unconsciously, it influenced my mood and others’ perception of me. On the plus side, shopping was a doddle!
YO’s words sprang to mind. The acceptance that no amount of denial on my part was going to turn back the clock, I decided to accept my age and mobility and do something about it. The alternative was turning into a bitter and twisted version of Dickens’ Miss Havisham. The more time I spend fighting my age, the less time I have to enjoy it!
After a traumatic bout of family bereavement and employment concerns, I wanted to change; to become more confident, more proactive, and a desire to be brighter! Time to retire the black clothes!
I am more mindful of my surroundings. I know a walk on a stony beach is like a minefield for me – one wrong step and I’m in trouble, so I choose sandy beaches. I use stairs carefully or find a lift. The shower boasts two new grab rails. I’m not afraid to ask for help, I want to remain as independent as I can given the ravages of time. I remember my parents, apparently old, at 40. Whether that was due to the perception of a younger me, I don’t know. Suffice to say times have changed for the better. With support, determination, and a healthy dose of reality, I plan to carry on as I want to. My acceptance of my own ageing was the only barricade after all. Have a good month people.
The resultant damage to my knee has rendered me quite limited in movement, along with the Women love the black phase. For some, purple is definitely the new black. Facing Up To Ageing Youngest Offspring recently pointed out I’m not as young as I was. His comment was prefaced with “Mum, I love you, but you’re not …” which usually precludes a fact of life I’d rather not hear. 32

FOUR SMALL SUVS YOU COULD PICK UP FOR LESS THAN £15,000 By Dhiren Ganesh
Seat Arona
Audi A2
With the demand for Small SUVs being so strong in the last few years there is a used car market available to tap into. Here are 4 small SUVs which you could pick up for less than £15,000.
Volkswagen T-Roc – this is very good value for money with a very pleasant ride, superb refinement and practical boot will appeal to families, plus it has one of the best driving positions of any car in the class. Later models have a much-improved interior, with soft materials and bright plastic finishes where you’d want them. You could pick up a 2020 1.0 TSI SE version with less than 65,000 miles for less than £15,000.
Seat Arona – considered one of the best with its roomy interior, comfortable ride and peppy petrol engines. There is value to be had with a 2022 example which could be bought within budget. It is compact in size and fairly lightweight however it still has plenty of punch and can tackle corners. You could find one of the 2022 1.0 TSI SE versions with less than 30,000 miles for under £14,000.
Skoda Kamiq – this car puts you quite low to the ground, very similar to the hatchback in the brands family hatchback range. It makes for a good choice with a supple, well-controlled ride and a remarkably spacious interior, which also feels classier than others in the range on this budget. If you’ll mainly be driving in town, then the entry-level 94bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine is peppy enough and the cheapest on the used car forecourt. You could find a 2022 1.0 SE version with less than 50,000 miles for less than £15,000.
Audi A2 – this car is small but not cheap with all of the qualities of the larger Audis and wraps them up into a compact and very attractive package. It has bold styling on the outside, a well-finished and sporty interior and tidy handling; on top of all that, it’s good value too. You could find a 2020 1.0 TFSI Sport version with less than 40,000 miles for around £15,000 or less. . VW T-Roc

HEALTH
CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE By Dr Julie Taylor
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) describes a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties. It includes: • Emphysema – damage to the air sacs in the lung • Chronic bronchitis – long-term inflammation of the airways It mainly affects people over 40 and becomes more common with increasing age. Most people are diagnosed after the age of 50. It is more common in men than women. COPD occurs more commonly in deprived areas. It is estimated that prevalence in the most deprived areas is almost double that of the least deprived. This is likely to be due to increased rate of smoking, and other factors such as indoor and outdoor pollution and exposure to dusts, fumes or chemicals at work. A small number of people may have a hereditary risk of COPD due to a rare protein deficiency.
And if I have COPD… The outlook for COPD varies from person to person. It cannot be cured or reversed, but for many people, treatment can help keep it under control so it does not severely limit their daily activities. Symptoms usually get progressively worse without treatment, so it is important you see your doctor if you think you might have COPD. You may be offered inhalers. Any regular physical activity is good. If you are unable to exercise due to your symptoms, referral to pulmonary rehabilitation can help you to improve your symptoms, where they will advise you on exercising safely as well as help you to understand and manage your condition. Losing weight may help if you are overweight. If you are underweight, you may need support to gain weight. It is important that you have your flu and COVID vaccinations. We may offer you a pneumococcal vaccine if you haven’t had one.
People with COPD may find that their symptoms get suddenly worse - this is called Many people who have COPD may not realise a flare-up or exacerbation. This is usually due that they have it.
