Introduction

This October, we’re delving into Jim Moir’s imagination. Known to many by his stage name “Vic Reeves”, Jim is a hugely versatile artist renowned for his contributions to comedy, television, and the arts.

While art always remained his first passion, from the 1980’s onwards Jim established himself as a household name for his TV comedy work. Many will have fond memories of shows like Vic Reeves Big Night Out, Shooting Stars, and The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, each packed with anarchic, surreal humour. Throughout this time painting was a reliable hinterland for Jim.

More recently viewers have witnessed Jim’s artistic talent in Sky Art’s ‘Painting Birds with Jim and Nancy Moir’. A keen interest in the natural world has led Jim to create works that brilliantly capture British birdlife. Thrushes, blackbirds, guillemots, lapwings and other familiar species feature in this collection. These paintings complement his wonderfully eccentric and surreal artworks which, full of mischievous observations, draw a direct line from Jim’s TV comedy persona. ‘Big Night Out at the Albany Empire Deptford, 1988’ is a noteworthy call back to the live shows that started it all.

‘Hey Presto Swine!’ features 40 new works showcasing the breadth of Jim’s artistic talent.
