Barn Cinema Film Guide May-June 2010
There can be no more welcome sight in British filmmaking than the return of Peter Greenaway to the form that led to an unprecedented string of successes throughout the 1980s. Nightwatching has taken several years to secure its release in the UK so don’t miss the opportunity to see a truly original filmmaker back on the big screen. The other hot tip from this programme is Frederic Wiseman’s stunning documenatry about the Paris Opera Ballet La Danse a monumental piece of filmmaking that engages and awes in equal measure. Finally, while the world cup has scared away some big releases in June it makes room for some less mainstream fare. That is if, like me, you don’t count Werner Herzog’s typically mad posturing through an unsuspecting New Orleans in Bad Lieutenant as standard Hollywood fare. Colin Orr, Film Programmer

No Greater Love
[no cert]
Tuesday 4 May / 8pm Wednesday 5 May / 5pm Thursday 6 May / 2pm & 5pm Director Michael Whyte Documentary UK 2009 / Colour / 1hr 40m After ten years of correspondence Michael Whyte was given unprecedented access to London’s monastery of the Most Holy Trinity. Founded in 1878, the monastery is home to the Discalced Order of Carmelite nuns who lead a cloistered life dedicated to prayer and contemplation, rarely leaving their home. Silence is maintained throughout the day with the exception of two periods of recreation. No Greater Love gives a unique insight into the daily rituals of this closed world that rejects materialism and offers faith and belief in the power of prayer as much richer endeavours. 05
The Railway Children
[U]
Sunday 2 & Monday 3 May / 2pm Director Lionel Jeffries Cast Jenny Agutter, Sally Thomsett, Gary F Warren UK 1970 / Colour / 1hr 48m Celebrating its fortieth anniversary with this digital re-issue, Lionel Jeffries’ 1970 adaptation of Edith Nesbit’s homely children’s novel still basks in a warm, rosy glow of universal nicety. Set in the early 1900s, the story is a celebration of old-fashioned British fortitude set in an environment of steam engines, buttercups, top hats and smocks.
The Ghost
[15]
Fri 7, Sun 9 & Tue 11 May / 8pm Sat 8 & Wed 12 May / 5pm Monday 10 May / 7.30pm Thursday 13 May / 2pm & 8pm Director Roman Polanski Cast Pierce Brosnan, Ewan MacGregor, Kim Cattrall FR/Ger/UK 2010 / Colour / 2hr 8m
Roman Polanski’s tightly knotted thriller, based on Robert Harris' acclaimed novel, is the story of a ghostwriter hired to take over writing the memoirs of former British PM Adam Lang after the first co-writer dies in an accident. Soon after the Ghost accepts the assignment, a high-ranking British official accuses Lang of complicity in a war crime. The controversy brings reporters and protesters swarming to the Martha's Vineyard mansion where Lang is staying with his wife and his media-handler turned mistress, Amelia. As the Ghost works, he begins to uncover clues revealing the previous writer may have discovered a dark secret linking Lang to the CIA. Resonating with topical themes this is an atmospheric and intriguing political thriller of the first order. 06

The Manchurian Candidate [12A]
Saturday 8 May / 8pm Sunday 9 May / 3pm Tuesday 11 May / 5pm Director John Frankenheimer Cast Laurence Harvey, Frank Sinatra, Angela Landsbury, Janet Leigh USA 1962 / B&W / 2hr 6m A welcome re-issue of this political suspense classic about the drug-hypnosis-induced behaviour that transforms a U.S. Army Korean War hero into a human bomb. Frankenheimer's version of Richard Condon's tragically prophetic novel looks even better now than it did then. Its greatest virtue lies in its brilliant balancing act between the twin lunacies of the Right and Left. Among a marvellous cast the startlingly monstrosity of Lansbury stands out. A masterly deconstruction of Cold War ideology.
Storm
[15]
Wednesday 12 May / 8pm Thursday 13 May / 5pm Director Hans-Christian Schmid Cast Kerry Fox, Stephen Dillane Germany 2009 / Colour / 1hr 4m Storm,is a political thriller inspired by the Serbian War crimes trials. Hannah Maynard, a prosecutor at the Tribunal in The Hague, manages to convince a young Bosnian to testify against an alleged war criminal. As diplomatic interests collide and threats escalate, Hannah faces the trial of her life, torn between her strong beliefs in the system and her loyalty towards the witness. Supported by an excellent cast Storm is a gripping film about personal and political integrity. 07

Fri 14, Sat 15 & Tue 18 May / 8pm Sunday 16 May / 3pm Director Warwick Thornton Cast Rowan McNamara, Marissa Gibson Australia 2009 / Colour / 1hr 41m Winner of the CamĂŠra d'Or at Cannes and hailed by Australian critics as 'one of the most wonderful films this country has ever produced'. Samson & Delilah lives up to all the hyperbole. A sensitively performed and beautifully filmed love story it begins at a remote outpost - home to a small Aboriginal community - in the Central Australian desert before tragedy strikes, driving the young lovers to run away to Alice Springs, where their love for each other becomes the reason for their very survival.

Cemetery Junction tells the funny, touching and universal story of being trapped in a small town and dreaming of escape. This 1970s-set comedy sees Merchant and Gervais back on home territory with a story based on their own early lives. Freddie, Bruce and Snork are three working class boys whose friendship unravels as Freddie decides he wants to find a way to break free from their seemingly predestined lives, while the others seem happy to settle for the days of joking, drinking and chasing girls. The arrival of an old girlfriend forces them all to face up to choices about their future.
Hitchcock Double Double Take
[12A]
Wednesday 19 May / 8pm Thursday 20 May / 5pm Director Johan Grimonprez Cast Alfred Hitchcock UK 2009 / B&W / 1hr 22m Universal Studios California, 1962. Alfred Hitchcock, on the set of The Birds, is called to the production office for an urgent message. When he arrives, he's shocked to be confronted by his doppelganger, claiming to be the real Alfred Hitchcock, who declares: “If you meet your double, you should kill him. Or he will kill you. Two of you is one too many. By the end of the script, one of you must die”. Using archive footage, the film uses Hitchcock's own sardonic wit to explore his preoccupation with doubles - a recurring theme in his films while the real Hitchcock and his elusive double increasingly obsess over the perfect murder of each other.
Psycho
[15]
Thursday 20 May / 8.15pm Director Alfred Hitchcock Cast Janet Leigh, Anthony Perkins USA 1960 / Colour / 1hr 49m No introduction needed, surely, for Hitchcock's best known film, a stunningly realised slice of Grand Guignol in which the Bates Motel is the arena for much verbal sparring and several gruesome murders. Hitchcock’s sly wit and low budget are both underscored and propped up by Bernard Herrman’s legendary and to be honest much classier score.

La Danse
[tbc]
Friday 21 - Sunday 23 May / 8pm Monday 24 May / 7pm Tuesday 25 May / 8pm Wednesday 26 May / 5pm Thursday 27 May / 2pm & 5pm Director Frederic Wiseman Documentary France/USA 2009 / Colour / Subtitles / 2hr 39m The Paris Opera Ballet is one of the world's great ballet companies. La Danse shows how a ballet company functions from administration, technical support and classes, to the rehearsal and performance of seven ballets: Paquita by Pierre Lacotte, The Nutcracker by Rudolf Nureyev, Genus by Wayne McGregor, Medea by Angelin Preljocaj, The House of Bernarda Alba by Mats Ek, Romeo and Juliet by Sasha Waltz and Orpheus and Eurydyce by Pina Bausch. The film is a profile of all aspects of one of France’s principal cultural institutions. It is a testament to legendary documentarymaker Wiseman’s love of dance and the respect he commands that he was allowed access to film all facets of the company, illustrating the sometime tensions between a commercial sensibility and creative integrity.

Ballets Russes
[PG]
Saturday 22 May / 5pm Sunday 23 May / 3pm Director Daniel Geller, Dayna Goldfine Documentary USA 2005 / Colour / 1hr 58m This history of one of the world’s great companies is the engrossing story of the genius and egotism shaping an art form at the peak of its creativity, told in compelling detail by the dancers who were there. Magical.
Milk of Sorrow
[15]
Tuesday 25 May / 5pm Wednesday 26 May / 8pm Director Claudia Llosa Cast Magaly Solier, Susi SĂĄnchez, EfraĂn Solis Spain/Peru 2008 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 40m Winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, The Milk of Sorrow is a striking reflection on communication and community. Fausta, we are told, suffers from 'the milk of sorrow', a melancholy transmitted through her mother's breast milk. For Fausta's mother, like many in her village, was raped during the years of Peru's bloody civil conflict in the 1980s, and Fausta still lives with the consequences of the violence. Peruvian director Claudia Llosa expertly crafts a film that functions as a tale both of individual trauma and of the wider collective memories and ordeals of the nation.
Dirty Oil
[U]
Thursday 27 May / 8pm Director Leslie Iwerks Documentary USA/Canada 2009 / Colour / 1hr 15m Deep behind-the-scenes of the strip-mined world of Alberta, Canada, where the vast and toxic Tar Sands deposit supplies the U.S. with the majority of its oil. The filmmakers journey to both sides of the border to talk to scientists, 'big oil' officials, politicians, doctors, environmentalists and aboriginal citizens to gauge the emotional and irreversible toll this 'black gold rush', fuelled by America's addiction to oil, is taking on our planet. 11
Centurion
[15]
Friday 28 & Saturday 29 May / 8pm Sunday 30 May / 5pm Monday 31 May / 5pm & 8pm Director Neil Marshall Cast Michael Fassbender, David Morrissey UK 2009 / Colour / 1hr 37m AD 117. The Roman Empire stretches across the known world but in northern Britain, the relentless onslaught has ground to a halt in face of the guerrilla tactics of the terrifying Picts. Centurion Quintus Dias marches north with the legendary Ninth Legion, under orders to wipe the Picts from the face of the earth, but following an ambush instead finds himself struggling to keep his small platoon alive behind enemy lines and desperate to reach the safety of the Roman frontier.
It’s a Wonderful Afterlife [12A]
Friday 28 & Saturday 29 May / 5pm Sunday 30 May / 8pm Director Gurinder Chadha Cast Sanjeev Bhaskar, Sally Hawkins, Shabana Azmi, Jimi Mistry, Mark Addy UK 2009 / Colour / 1hr 40m A killer comedy from the director of Bend It Like Beckham. With a cast featuring the best of British comedy talent, It's A Wonderful Afterlife tells the story of a British-Asian mother whose obsession with marrying off her daughter has seriously funny results as each potential suitor meets a sticky end in a series of currythemed murders. 12
Life During Wartime
[15]
Tuesday 1 -Thursday 3 June / 8pm Director Todd Solondz Cast Shirley Henderson, CiarĂĄn Hinds, Charlotte Rampling USA 2009 / Colour / 1hr 36m Ten years after Todd Solondz's highly acclaimed Happiness comes a sequel of sorts, or more like a riff on the earlier film, as the director takes liberties with the characters and their histories, as well as casting a different (and intriguing) set of actors. But from its familiar opening scene onwards, Life During Wartime sees Solondz doing what he does best, presenting us with fascinating, flawed characters struggling to find love and meaning in a generally unsympathetic world. Their stories are poignant, funny, disturbing, shocking or sad, and as they intersect or run parallel, create an emotionally resonant portrait of modern life and love.
City of Life & Death [15]
Tuesday 8 June / 5pm Wednesday 9 June / 8pm Directors Lu Chuan Cast Liu Ye, Gao Yuanyuan, Hideo Nakaizumi China 2009 / B&W / Subtitles / 2hr 16m Nanjing (previously known as Nanking) was China's capital in the 1930s, until the government and army withdrew to inland areas at the end of 1937 as the invading Japanese Imperial Army advanced. Over the following three months, countless civilians were massacred and the city was laid to waste in what has come to be known as 'the rape of Nanjing’. Lu Chuan's (Kekexili: Mountain Patrol) elegiac film approaches the subject in an unorthodox manner linking the overarching story line of the fall of the city with close-ups of individual lives and deaths. Stunning. 13
Half Term Screenings How to Train Your Dragon
[PG]
Sunday 30 & Monday 31 May / 2pm Director Dean DeBlois & Chris Sanders Voice Cast Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler USA 2010 / Colour / 1hr 38m On a remote North Atlantic island, the Viking population is suffering harassment from swarms of marauding dragons, until geeky son-of-a-chief Hiccup finds an injured dragon in the woods and suspects this constant state of warfare may be unnecessary. This a surprisingly robust affair, backing its juggernaut narrative with a welljudged subtext which urges viewers to question received wisdom and make up their own minds, especially when it comes to life and death.
Clash of the Titans
[12A]
Tuesday 1 June / 2pm Wednesday 2 & Thursday 3 June / 2pm & 5pm Directors Louis Leterrier Cast Liam Neeson, Sam Worthington UK/USA 2010 / Colour / 1hr 45m Clash of the Titans doesn't stray too far from the beloved 1981 Harryhausen classic which spawned it. The setting is Ancient Greece - an age of Gods and monsters. Perseus is an orphaned demi-God drawn into the battle between man and the immortals when Hades, lord of the underworld, threatens to unleash his sea-beast, the Kraken, on the city of Argos. Accompanied by a ragtag band of warriors, Perseus sets off to end the reign of the Gods once and for all. 14
Robin Hood
[tbc]
Friday 4 June / 2pm, 5pm & 8pm Saturday 5 June / 5pm & 8pm Sunday 6 June / 3pm & 8pm Monday 7 June / 6.30pm Tuesday 8 June / 8pm Wednesday 9 June / 5pm Thursday 10 June / 2pm & 8pm Directors Ridley Scott Cast Russell Crow, Cate Blanche, Mark Strong, Max von Sydow, William Hurt UK/USA 2010 / Colour / 2hr 28m Ridley Scott and the inevitable Russell Crowe take on the unenviable task of breathing new life into the well trodden trail of Sherwood’s finest. As with his reinvention of the Roman epic in Galdiator, Scott goes back to basics to tell the story of how an archer in the service of King Richard the Lionheart came to be known as Robin Hood, the most famous outlaw of English Folklore. Beginning after the death of King Richard at the siege of Chalus Chabrol, the film follows Robin on his rise to infamy among the English Barons and the newly crowned King John. Featuring historically accurate characters such as Sir William Marshall and grounded in reality (in a similar way to Gladiator), this is not Robin Hood as you have seen him before, rather the making of the legend we have come to know him as now.

Bad Lieutenant-Port of Call: New Orleans
[18]
Friday 18 & Saturday 19 June / 5pm Sunday 20 June / 3pm Monday 21 & Tuesday 22 June / 8pm Director Werner Herzog Cast Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer USA 2009 / Colour / 2hr 2m Terence McDonagh is a rogue New Orleans police detective who is as devoted to his job as he is at scoring drugs while playing fast and loose with the law. He wields his badge as often as he wields his gun in order to get his way. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he becomes a high-functioning addict who is a deeply intuitive, fearless detective reigning over the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority and abandon. A loose remake of Abel Ferrara's 1992 immorality tale, Herzog's deliberately bonkers approach, matched by Cage's crazed hammy performance make the whole hugely compelling and the film's murky atmosphere is packed with pitch-black humour that oozes from the screen.

Michael Winterbottom’s already notorious new thriller is based on the classic 1952 pulp novel by Jim Thompson that took the hard boiled noir world of the 40’s and mixed in the more contemporary depictions of the psycho-sexual violence of the small town serial killer - who in this case also happens to be the town’s Sheriff. Winterbottom uses the placid boy-scout features of Casey Afflek to great effect and mixes in a bit of Edward Hopper’s visual style with a dash of David Lynch’s Blue Velvet. Certainly not for the squeamish, it is a thoughtful and stylish addition to the genre jumping ladder that is Winterbottom’s career.
