Barn Cinema Film Guide NovemberDecember 2010

Now with Dolby Surround Sound

It always seems to arrive right on the back of summer but when we’re booking films three months in advance, Christmas is never far away. Our final brochure of the year also allows us to reflect on the past year and to be honest 2010 has had lots of good films but very few great ones. This made our annual staff poll for best film of the year a very quick discussion, with the unanimous choice of Jacques Audiard’s Une Prophet dismissing all other contenders - a film of power and passion that gets more complex and more satisfying each time you see it. In this programme we have a whole range of films, from gentle comedy with our cover star Gerard Depardieu to the downright thrilling denouement of the final part of the Millennium Trilogy. I hope you’ve enjoyed going to The Barn this year and I’m already thrilled by what we have to offer you in the new year. Colin Orr, Film Programmer

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

Michael Douglas reprises the role that brought him an Oscar as Gekko emerges from prison a reformed man and the author of a new bestselling self-help book, Is Greed Good?

Sunday 7 November / 3pm Monday 8 November / 8pm Tuesday 9 November / 8pm Wednesday 10 November / 5pm Thursday 11 November / 2pm & 8pm

Oliver Stone moves the action in the sequel to incorporate the gruesome financial meltdown from 2008 onwards. This time the film centres on Jake Moore, a thrusting young trader at a bank suspiciously similar to Bear Stearns who specialises in green investments, specifically renewable energy deals. Jake’s beautiful girlfriend, Winnie, who runs a green news website, also happens to be Gekko’s estranged daughter. When a new ruthless investor moves in on his bank Jake looks to Gekko for help before being forced to wonder if the leopard has really changed his spots.

[12A]

Director Oliver Stone Cast Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, Josh Brolin USA 2010 / Colour / 2hr 13m Gordon Gekko, the man who summed up the 80s for better or worse in Wall Street is back with this simple message: “I once said greed is good... but now it seems it’s legal.”

The Town

[15]

Sunday 7 November / 8pm Monday 8 November / 5pm Director Ben Affleck Cast Ben Affleck, Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm USA 2010 / Colour / 2hr 3m On home territory for this Boston set crime drama and with touchstones like Michael Mann and Sidney Lumet, Ben Affleck is starting to show serious potential as a director. Doug MacRay is an unrepentant criminal, the de facto leader of a group of ruthless bank robbers. With no real attachments, Doug never has to fear losing anyone close to him. But, that all changed on the gang's latest job, when they briefly took a hostage - bank manager, Claire Keesey. They let her go unharmed, but sometime later she meets an unassuming and rather charming man named Doug... not realising that he is the same man who only days earlier had terrorised her. The instant attraction now threatens both their futures.

Peepli [Live]

[15]

Tuesday 9 November / 5pm Wednesday 10 November / 8pm Thursday 11 November / 5pm Director Anusha Rizvi / Mahmood Farooqui Cast Omkar Das Manikpuri, Raghuvir Yadav India 2010 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 46m Peepli [Live] is a satire which revolves around a villager from Central India called Natha, his brother Budhia and their family. The family is about to lose their land because they are unable to repay a loan, when they hear of a government programme which offers the family of any farmer committing suicide a compensation of 100,000 rupees ($2000). The older brother convinces his sibling to agree to commit suicide. This sets in motion a chain of events which finds Natha in the eye of a storm involving government ministers and the national media. “A very clever, laugh-out-loud satire. The Guardian 05

The Social Network [12A]

Friday 12 - Sunday 14 November / 8pm Saturday 13 November / 5pm & 8pm Monday 15 November / 5pm Tuesday 16 & Wednesday 17 / 8pm Thursday 18 November / 5pm Director David Fincher Cast Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Rooney Mara USA 2010 / Colour / 2hr

Already being hailed as a surefire Oscar nominee The Social Network is possibly the most articulate depiction of a cultural phenomenon since Peter Morgan and Stephen Frears deconstructed the ‘Diana complex’ in The Queen. A great film can still take something unfathomable and provide a cutting insight that no other medium can match.

What Aaron Sorkin (creator of The West Wing) does brilliantly in his erudite script is give us a lightning-fast dramatisation of the creation of Facebook. In a fury of blogging and programming, what begins in a dorm room at Harvard quickly turns into a revolution in communication turning it’s founder and uber-geek, Mark Zuckerberg, into the youngest billionaire in history. It is this depiction of Zuckerberg that has divided viewers right down the middle with the Facebook generation happy to ignore the anti-social traits and downright betrayals that characterise his rise to the top while older audiences - and the thrust of Sorkin’s script - hold him accountable. “It’s a grandly entertaining reminder of everything we used to go to the movies for (and still can’t get online): sparkling dialogue, thorny situations, soulful performances, and an unusually openended and relevant engagement with a major social issue of the day: how we (dis)connect.” Time Out

The Secret of Kells

[PG]

Friday 12 November / 5pm Sunday 14 November / 3pm Director Tomm Moore / Nora Twomey Cast Venise du Bois du Roy, Brendan Gleeson Fr/Bel/Ire 2009 / Colour / 1hr 15m Academy Award Nominee for Best Animated Feature 2010, The Secret of Kells tells the story of young Brendan who must face his deepest fears and enter the enchanted forest to complete the magical Book of Kells. It’s a brooding story set firmly in the Dark Ages and Celtic legend with the beautifully hand-drawn animation morphing into strange new shapes as the trees narrow, crows caw menacingly and a female fairy slinks around in the form of a snowy panther. Magical.

Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow

[U]

Monday 15 November / 8pm Thursday 18 November / 2pm Director Sophie Fiennes Documentary Fr/Neth/UK 2010 / Colour / 1 hr 45m In 1993 the artist Anselm Kiefer left Buchen, Germany for La Ribaute, a derelict silk factory near Barjac. From 2000 he began constructing a series of elaborate installations there. Like a strange, sprawling village, La Ribaute extends over 35 hectares and is composed of old industrial buildings and working studios that link to a network of underground tunnels dug out by Kiefer, which run underneath pavilions built to house paintings and installations. Traversing this landscape, the film immerses the audience in the total world and creative process of one of today’s most significant and inventive artists. “A brilliant documentary... Before I saw the film. I knew Kiefer was a great artist. After I saw it, I knew why.” Brian Appleyard, The Sunday times 07

Hong Sangsoo Season - Between Men and Women For the first time in the UK we have the opportunity to sample the work of South Korea’s most celebrated - yet least seen - director. Claire Denis - head of the jury which gave him the Prix Un Certain Regard in Cannes this year once described seeing a Hong Sangsoo film as feeling like being hit on the head by a rock while out walking. His films certainly have the power to shake up perceptions, but mostly his approach is humourous, satirising male self-delusions and female insecurities with delicious candour. There are obvious parallels between Hong's methods and those of Wong Kar-Wai and the late Eric Rohmer, since both directors are fascinated by methods of seduction and the tricks and traps of the libido. The results are touching, thoughtful, sometimes startling‌ and often laugh-out-loud funny. Tony Rayns

The Day a Pig Fell into the Well

[no cert]

Tuesday 16 November / 5pm Cast Kim Uiseong, Park Jinseong, Cho Eunsuk South Korea 1996 / Subtitles / 1hr 54m Hong's prizewinning debut has nothing to do with pigs or wells. But it does show a day when things go wrong. It explores the intertwined lives of four young urban adults and finds the extraordinary at the heart of the everyday. A modern classic.

The Turning Gate

[no cert]

Wednesday 17 November / 5pm Cast Kim Sangkyung, Yea Jiwon, Choop Sangmee South Korea 2002 / Subtitles / 1hr 55m The more Hong thinks about the ways we delude and contradict ourselves in matters of love/lust, the funnier he finds it. Out-of-work actor Kyungsoo accepts an invitation to scenic Chuncheon, only to find that he's expected to help his old friend to seduce a dance teacher.

Like You Know it All

[no cert]

Thursday 18 November / 8pm Cast Kim Taewoo, Ko Hyunjung, Uhm Jiwon South Korea 2009 / Subtitles / 2hr 6m An exquisitely embarrassing comedy of manners, this film puts its hapless protagonist Kyungnam through two encounters whose outcomes are very different. With summery settings and a cast of Sangsoo veterans, it's a delight.

The Kids Are All Right

[15]

Friday 19 November / 5pm Saturday 20 November / 8.30pm Sunday 21 November / 3pm Mon 22 & Wed 24 November / 5pm Tuesday 23 November / 8pm Thursday 25 November / 2pm & 8pm Director Lisa Cholodenko Cast Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo USA 2010 / Colour / 1hr 46m Simply put, this whip-smart comedy drama about modern family life is one of the most enjoyable films of the year.

The family live in a comfortable LA suburb, and theirs is a pretty normal existence - loving, but not perfect. Nic is a medic and the main breadwinner, something of a worrier. Jules is a bright underachiever, and has dabbled in a few careers. Before Joni leaves home to start college, her brother persuades her to help him contact their biological father, and so Paul enters the family's life. An unattached organic farmer and restaurateur, Paul is all alternative values and easy charm, so it's little wonder that he's soon causing ripples in the domestic set-up. Director Lisa Cholodenko and co-writer Stuart Blumberg spent years getting their nimble script just right, and their engaging cast do a superb job in bringing it to life. It feels like we've stumbled into a real family, with all the intimacies, shared histories and simmering frustrations that entails. London Film Festival

Long-term couple Nic and Jules are the parents of teenagers Joni and Laser, both conceived with the help of an anonymous sperm donor.

The life, times and decline of a modern anti-hero are depicted in forensic detail and massively ambitious scope in Carlos, Olivier Assayas' fictional biography of terrorist and revolutionary Ilich RamĂrez SĂĄnchez. Better known under his nom de guerre Carlos and media sobriquet 'the Jackal', SĂĄnchez grabbed headlines through the 70s, notably for taking hostage the delegates of an OPEC conference and for a number of killings. Extensively researched, this imaginative reconstruction follows Carlos from the early 70s, when he signed up for the Palestinian cause, to his years of decline as a mercenary entrepreneur and fugitive. Internationally shot, the film skips propulsively between locations, combining journalistic seriousness with action-thriller panache. At its centre is an extraordinary performance - mercurial and multi-lingual - by Edgar Ramirez. An in-depth study of a man who embodies many of the complexities and contradictions of the terrorist ethos, Carlos is one of the most achieved docu-fiction undertakings in recent cinema, and a high point in the career of one of France's most versatile and risk-taking directors.

Mr Nice

[18]

Monday 22 November / 8pm Tuesday 23 November / 5pm Wednesday 24 November / 8pm Thursday 25 November / 5pm Director Bernard Rose Cast Rhys Ifans, Chloe Sevigny, David Thewlis UK 2010 / Colour / 2hr 1m

Based on the bestselling autobiography of the same name, Mr Nice is the extraordinary story of Howard Marks. During the mid 1980s Howard Marks (Rhys Ifans) had forty-three aliases, eighty-nine phone lines and owned twenty-five companies throughout the world. Whether bars, recording studios or offshore banks, all were money laundering vehicles serving the core activity: dope dealing. At the height of his career he was smuggling consignments of up to thirty tonnes of marijuana from Pakistan and Thailand to America and Canada and had contact with organisations as diverse as MI6, the CIA, the IRA and the Mafia.

Another Year

[12A]

Fri 26 & Sat 27 November / 5pm & 8pm Sunday 28 November / 8pm Monday 29 November / 5pm Tuesday 30 November / 8pm Wednesday 1 December / 5pm Thursday 2 December / 2pm, 5pm & 8pm Director Mike Leigh Cast Jim Broadbent, Ruth Sheen Lesley Manville, Imelda Staunton UK 2010 / Colour / 2hr 9m Mike Leigh's gentle yet powerful new film about family, friendship and ageing is a compassionate and considered work, balancing humour alongside its more melancholic notes. Tom (Jim Broadbent) and Gerri are a good-hearted couple sliding towards old age. He's a geologist, she's a counsellor, and they have a warm relationship with their grownup son Joe, a community lawyer. As they potter

12

around their allotment or cook curries for their friends, the only remarkable thing about them is how contented they are. But two of their friends don't share their good fortune: Mary, a work colleague of Gerri's who bemoans her disastrous love life and drinks too much to try and keep up a cheerful front, and Tom's old mate Ken, equally lonely and unhappy, are trying desperately to stay afloat. The film unfolds over four seasons, an accumulation of encounters and mostly small events that highlight Leigh's skill in taking the fabric of everyday life and turning it into something resonant and meaningful. He's helped by his ensemble cast, many of them Leigh veterans, and all of whom seem to be inhabiting their roles rather than playing them. Cinematographer Dick Pope also captures the changing seasons perfectly, from a sun-dappled garden to a forlorn winter funeral. Getting old is clearly no picnic - but how refreshing to see it treated with honesty and understanding.

Africa United

[12A]

Sunday 28 November / 3pm Monday 29 November / 8pm Director Debs Gardner-Paterson Cast Roger Nsengiyumva, Eriya Ndayambaje UK/Rwanda/SA 2010 / Colour / 1hr 27m Already being talked about as an African Slumdog Millionaire this is the heart warming story of a couple of Rwandan youngsters, Dudu and Fabrice who are invited by a FIFA scout to take part in trials for Africa United, linking in with the World Cup in South Africa. Dudu's poor planning lands them in Congo, where they are threatened with a bleak future within the child army. A daring escape is followed by a new plan: a 3,000 mile trip to the Finals themselves, a journey that will take them through seven countries and assorted dangers en route.

Out of the Ashes

[no cert]

Tuesday 30 November / 5pm Wednesday 1 December / 8pm Director Tim Albone, Lucy Martens Documentary UK 2010 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 26m Against a backdrop of war and poverty, Out of the Ashes traces the extraordinary journey of a team of young Afghan men as they chase a seemingly impossible dream - shedding new light on a nation beyond burqas, bombs, drugs and devastation. The documentary follows the team in their quest against the odds to qualify for the World Cup. With unrestricted behind-the-scenes access, the film follows the ups and downs of their epic journey. We track the team as they travel the globe - eating fish and chips in Jersey, watching tango dancers in Argentina and swimming in the sea for the first time off the coast of Tanzania. Witty, touching and nail-biting to the end, Out of the Ashes is a compelling story of triumph over adversity. 13

My Afternoons with Margueritte

[15]

+ Uncomfortable Director David Salas / UK 2010 / 15m Winner of SHOOT 2010 short film festival Friday 3 & Saturday 4 December / 8pm Sunday 5 December / 5.30pm Monday 6 & Tuesday 7 December /8pm Wednesday 8 December / 5pm Thursday 9 December / 2pm Director Jean Becker Cast Gérard Depardieu, Gisèle Casadesus France 2010 / Colour / 1hr 22m My Afternoons with Margueritte is the uplifting story of one of those chance encounters that can radically change the course of someone's life. Germain (Gérard Depardieu) is a large and almost illiterate man in his fifties. He is unmarried and still lives with his mother with whom he has a fractious relationship. Margueritte is a tiny, elderly woman with a passion for the written word. There are 40 years and 200 pounds difference between them and only one thing in common, a shared fondness for pigeons. When Germain happens to sit beside her on a park bench and Margueritte reads extracts from her novels to him, an unlikely and unexpected friendship develops. Under Margueritte's tutelage, Germain discovers a love of literature and with it, a wisdom which confounds his friends at the bistro who have always treated him like an idiot. As Margueritte begins to lose her eyesight, Germain sees an opportunity to use his love for this sweet and mischievous grandma to improve both his own life and hers. 14

Burke and Hare

[tbc]

Friday 3 & Saturday 4 December / 5pm Sunday 5 December / 8pm Monday 6 & Tuesday 7 December / 5pm Wednesday 8 December / 8pm Thursday 9 December / 5pm Director John Landis Cast Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, Isla Fisher, Christopher Lee, Tom Wilkinson UK 2010 / Colour / 1hr 40m Burke & Hare is a very black comedic take on the true story of the 1828 Edinburgh body-snatchers William Burke and William Hare. These two Irish entrepreneurs, spurred on by a chance meeting with a gorgeous actress, discover that a dead body can fetch a hefty price when the demands of the leading medical professors Dr. Knox and Dr. Monroe reach beyond that of the local supply. A very welcome return by John Landis to the big screen with this dark tale fitting in very well to the classic Ealing comedy tradition.

Despicable Me

[U]

Sunday 5 December / 3pm Director Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud Cast Steve Carell, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews USA 2010 / Colour / 1hr 35m Taking the premise that supervillains can be heroes too, throw in three adorable orphans straight out of Annie, add a Grinch like character arc and what you get is Despicable Me. Wonderfully voiced by Steve Carell, semi-evil Gru, plans to steal the moon in a plot that involves temporarily adopting three cookie-selling orphans. The movie sprints along with throwaway sight gags, kid-friendly physical comedy and occasional pauses for “aww bits of sentiment. 15

The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest [15]

Friday 10 December / 5pm & 8pm Saturday 11 December / 5pm Sunday 12 December / 8pm Monday 13 & Tuesday 14 December / 5pm Wednesday 15 December / 8pm Thursday 16 December / 5pm Director Daniel Alfredson Cast Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace, Lena Endre Sw/Den/Ger 2009 / Colour / Subtitles / 2hr 28m The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest - the final installment of the "Millennium trilogy" - Lisbeth is fighting for her life in more ways than one. In intensive care and charged with three murders, she will not only have to prove her innocence, but also identify and denounce those corrupt government institutions that very nearly destroyed her life. Once upon a time she was a victim. “A literary and cinematic phenomenon” The Guardian

Back to the Future

[PG]

Sunday 12 December / 2pm Director Robert Zemeckis Cast Michael J Fox, Christopher Lloyd USA 1985 / Colour / 1hr 55m Teenager Marty McFly faces the unusual problem of travelling back in time to unite his parents in order that he will be born in this 25th Anniversary digital re-release of Zemeckis’ modern classic. Back to the Future posed many of the time travelling conundrums that other films have since taken very seriously and just has great fun with them. Unsurprisingly this hugely inventive film more than stands up to the test of time. 18

It Happened One Night [PG]

Saturday 11 December / 8.15pm Sunday 12 December / 5pm Director Frank Capra Cast Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert USA 1934 / B&W / 1hr 45m The first film ever to make a clean sweep of the major five main Academy Awards - Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay (a feat not matched again for forty years) - It Happened One Night lifted Harry Cohen’s poverty-row Columbia Studios into the big league ensuring Frank Capra's future output would be among the biggest box-office successes of the 1930s. Gable plays a ruthless reporter who adopts a fugitive heiress making her way across America by bus. She (Colbert) is spoiled and snobbish, he is poor but honest, and his attempts to convert her to homespun pleasures hit the right emotional chord in Depressionweary audiences. Capra's immigrant sensibility and total belief in the diversity, energy and can-do of the very poorest of peoples - as well as their sense of humour - are perfectly captured in Robert Riskin’s pacy, witty script. The film also showcased its stars at their best, Colbert as one of Hollywood's freshest comediennes, Gable as the acerbic, loveable hunk. Utterly timeless.

The fun and the action comes when they get back together - using all their cunning and experience to stay one step ahead of their pursuers and uncover the major conspiracy at the heart of the government. Great fun all round - especially when Helen Mirren gets her hands on the machine gun.

A Prophet

[18]

Tuesday 14 December / 8.15pm Director Jacques Audiard Cast Tahar Rahim, Niels Arestrup France 2009 / Colour / Subtitles / 2hr 35m Our film of the year for 2010. It’s a film we haven’t stopped talking about since we first screened it in February so if you didn’t get to see it then you’ve no excuse this time around. When Malik, a young French Arab, finds himself in prison with no friends or allies, he goes out of his way to be useful to the dominant Corsican gang and its leader Cesar Luciani. After a gruelling rites-of-passage murder, that literally haunts him from that moment on, Malik builds by slow degrees a power base of his own. A modern masterpiece. 20

Rare Exports A Christmas Tale

[cert tbc]

Friday 17 December / 5pm Saturday 18 December / 8pm Sunday 19 December / 5pm Monday 20 - Thursday 23 December / 5pm Director Jalmari Helander Cast Onni Tommila, Jorma Tommila, Per Christian Ellefsen, Tommi Korpela, Finland 2010 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 17m Santa Claus is coming to town, but unfortunately for the children of this particular Finnish neighbourhood, spreading Christmas cheer is not at the top of his list. In the depths of the Korvatunturi Mountains a team of scientists

uncover a secret that has been buried for hundreds of years. When the town's livestock is slaughtered and the children start to go missing, young local boy Pietari begins to realise that this will be a Yuletide like no other, as the time has come to learn the ugly truth about the real Father Christmas. Originating from two award-winning short films that spawned an online cult phenomenon, director Jalmari Helander's debut feature effectively retains their sinister style, while deftly expanding on his unique vision. With a dash of Tim Burtonesque whimsy and a malevolence that evokes the darkest of fairytales, Rare Exports is overflowing with inventive ideas and crafty twists. Part children's adventure, part macabre seasonal shocker, the film gleefully blends genres to create a darkly humourous concoction that defies categorisation, proudly standing alone as a true one of a kind.

Each attempt a colossal failure thanks to the caped superhero known as ‘Metro Man’, until the day the Megamind actually defeats him in the throes of one of his botched evil plans. Suddenly the fate of Metro City is threatened when a new villain arrives and chaos ensues leaving everyone to wonder: Can the worlds biggest mind actually be the one to save the day?

The American

Friday 17 December / 8pm Saturday 18 December / 5pm Sunday 19 December / 8pm Monday 20 - Thursday 23 December / 8pm Director Anton Corbijn Cast George Clooney, Paolo Bonacelli, Violante Placido, Irina Bjorklund USA 2010 / Colour / 1hr 45m In a marked departure from Control, Anton Corbijn's desire to expand his range is fulfilled in The American, a character-driven thriller realised with assurance and visual panache. Jack (George Clooney) is an assassin and arms expert growing weary of a life spent on the move and always alone. Following an unfortunate incident in Sweden, Jack flees to the Italian countryside, hiding away in a small village in Abruzzo. There, although he takes on an assignment to provide a weapon for a mysterious female contact, he also begins to strike up relationships, and to contemplate a different kind of life. But at the heart of the film lies Jack's fundamental dilemma - can he escape his past, and find a more peaceful future? Clooney is perfect as the enigmatic Jack, wrestling with questions of morality and trust, and is ably supported by a European cast including veteran Italian actor Paolo Bonacelli, excellent as the perceptive local priest, and Violante Placido and Thekla Reuten as the women Jack encounters. Equally impressive is the film's magnificent setting, with the village of Castel del Monte bringing its own sense of suspense and isolation.

Academy Award Nominee for Best Animated Feature 2010, The Secret of Kells tells the story of young Brendan who must face his deepest fears and enter the enchanted forest to complete the magical Book of Kells.

Already being talked about as an African Slumdog Millionaire this is the story of a couple of Rwandan youngsters, Dudu and Fabrice who are invited by a FIFA scout to take part in trials for Africa United. Dudu's poor planning lands them in Congo, where they are threatened with a bleak future within the child army. A daring escape is followed by a new plan: a 3,000 mile trip to the Finals themselves, a journey that will take them through seven countries and assorted dangers en route. Africa United has an uplifting story and isn't afraid of depicting hardship as much as it revels in an infectious sense of fun and joy.
