About Dartington

News in Brief

Dartington is a place of learning and experiment. We act in three broad areas: the arts, the promotion of a fairer society and the future of our planet. Working in partnership with pioneering thinkers, teachers, artists and social entrepreneurs, Dartington addresses some of the significant issues of our time.

Annual Permit Parking Available

We do this in three ways • by setting up our own initiatives and programmes, building on our skills, resources and heritage • by offering the time, space and stimulation for others to develop and test promising ideas • by inspiring a wide community of artists, thinkers and activists through our work and the exceptional environment we provide Dartington is an independent organisation, trading ethically and sustainably as a social enterprise in order to fund our pioneering work.

Supporting Dartington

Our annual parking permit is now available through Dartington’s membership scheme. Our enhanced membership package now offers an annual parking permit, free mailings of this What’s On Guide, 10% off at the Shops at Dartington, £1 off full price cinema tickets, a members’ newsletter and invitations to exclusive members events for a total cost of £50 a year (or £75 for dual members). Visit The Gardens

Every time of year is a good time to visit the gardens at Dartington and as winter closes and the first signs of Spring arrive it can be quite breath taking. As the winter frosts give way to hopefully some Spring sunshine walking around the gardens you will discover new plants and flowers coming back to life. Follow a hearty walk with a hot drink, a bite to eat in the White Hart or the Roundhouse is the perfect way to spend a day.

Bicton College at Dartington

As you may have heard The Dartington Hall Trust is partnering up with Bicton College to establish a new campus on the estate after the current tenancy at Parsonage Farm finishes. Bicton College at Dartington – will deliver a wide range of courses for students from 14 years old upwards, from across the region at all educational levels including higher education. Courses will be offered in all aspects of agriculture, horticulture and countryside management, opening up a range of new opportunities for young people. It will also combine two very similar philosophies on how farming needs to develop and evolve if it is to meet future challenges such as the rising cost of energy, fuel and fertilisers.

The first few months of the years are always rich with great new film releases as we head into the awards seasons but this year brings a larger than usual choice of films worthy of a much coveted prize. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D will surely be a contender, as will Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty and the spectacular big screen adaptations of Les Misérables and Life of Pi 3D. If you want something a little different but no less worthy, the Barn cinema team recommends Martin McDonagh’s latest film, Seven Psychopaths, which we found original, darkly funny, and surprisingly moving.

Monday 25 February to Saturday 2 March Matilda is my grandma. She migrated from Jamaica to England in 1962. I was born in England in 1983, and this year I am the same age as Matilda was when she left her homeland. I have a story to tell. It begins with a conversation between two Women of the same age, fifty years apart in time. Matilda and Me is a dubtheatre, monodrama, biomyth devised and created by Ria Hartley through extensive training in the s.o.r.p.l.u.s.i methodology at the YEMOYA international artist residency (Jamaica) held by internationally acclaimed dub poet, monodramatist and educator d’bi young anitafrika. This solo performance is created through research and training undertaken in Jamaica and is further developed during this Immerse residency at Space at Dartington. Look out for details of the performance in March. Supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

Space includes eight large performing arts studios, a large multipurpose makers’ studio / workshop space, a gallery and two smaller rehearsal studios / meeting rooms. Live performances, film and sound recording can be accommodated - call us to discuss this further.
