FRIDAY’S GAME The Dartmouth men’s hockey team completes its three-game road trip Friday night in Cambridge against No. 5 Harvard. The game will be carried on One World Sports in addition to the Ivy League Digital Network and is set for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
LAST TIME OUT The Big Green split the weekend in Central New York with a 2-1 loss Friday at Colgate before earning a stunning comeback win at No. 14 Cornell the following evening. Dartmouth’s third-period push in Hamilton came up one goal short, but managed to complete another come-from-behind effort the next day in Ithaca, erasing a 2-1 deficit after 40 minute to earn the win.
CLASSIC JASIEK -.Sophomore Alex Jasiek was the driving force behind the comeback at Cornell, scoring a pair of third-period power-play goals just 62 seconds apart. His first of the night and second of the season tied the game at 2-2, before giving the visitors the lead for the first time all night with just 6:41 remaining in regulation. -.Jasiek assisted on the first Dartmouth goal of the night, giving him his first career three-point night in addition to his first two-goal game. -.For his efforts, the St. Louis native was tabbed as the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week. It marked the first individual accolade of Jasiek’s career and the second Player of the Week honor for Dartmouth in the last eight days. -.The NCAA tabbed the second of Jasiek’s two goals —a wrist shot inside the far post — as the No. 5 play of the week.
PLAYER OF THE… MONTH!
Dartmouth_MIH
-.For the second straight week, Troy Crema was the recipient of an individual honor from the ECAC Hockey office. Crema was named the conference’s Player of the Month for January after a stellar stretch to begin 2017. -.Crema led all ECAC Hockey skaters in both goals (8) and points (13) in the month.

HANOVER WEST -.Barring a return to Ithaca and Lynah Rink in the upcoming postseason, the Class of 2017 will graduate in June as the only four-year class in Dartmouth history to have never lost at Cornell. Saturday’s win was the fourth straight victory for the Big Green on the Big Red’s home ice. -.Dartmouth’s record for consecutive wins in Ithaca is seven between 1913 and 1961. -.The Class of 1961 is the only senior class in Dartmouth history to never lose in Ithaca, winning in 1959, 1960 and again in 1961. Since freshmen weren’t permitted to play on the varsity team in those years, three games were all they could play at any one road arena, therefore their 3-0 mark at Cornell was the standard prior to this year.
SCOUTING HARVARD -.The Crimson come into Friday’s game with a 14-5-2 overall mark and a 10-4-2 ECAC Hockey record. -.A road sweep of Cornell (4-1) and Colgate (3-1) last weekend helped Harvard jump up in the national polls to No. 5 in the USCHO rankings and No. 6 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. -.Alexander Kerfoot leads the team in scoring with 26 points on eight goals and 18 assists, but has not registered a point in the last four games. Kerfoot was leading the Crimson in scoring with 25 points when these two teams last met two weeks ago, but outside of an assist in that game in Hanover on Jan. 17 hasn’t managed anything since. -.Harvard’s top-five scorers this season all have 20 or more points and are all draft picks of NHL teams. -.Merrick Madsen has been one of the top goalies in the league this season, boasting a 2.20 goals against average and a .917 save percentage.
AGAINST THE CRIMSON -.These two played one another in possibly the most unpredictable ECAC Hockey games of the year in Hanover on Jan. 17. Dartmouth came out an 8-4 winner thanks to four goals in the second period and three more in the third. -.Harvard led 2-0 late in the first, but the home team scored the next three goals to take a 3-2 advantage. The Crimson responded with two more goals to take another lead at 4-3, only to see the Big Green score the final five of the night for the four-goal win. -.It was the first time Harvard had allowed eight goals in a game since an 8-2 home loss to Dartmouth on Nov. 26, 2010. -.Troy Crema (2-0-2), Shane Sellar (1-2-3), Will Graber (0-3-3), Grant Opperman (1-1-2), John Ernsting (0-2-2), Ryan Blankemeier (1-1-2) and Josh Hartley (0-2-2) all recorded multiple points in the contest.
DON’T CALL IT A COMEBACK… BUT IT WAS. -.Like most teams, Dartmouth struggles when playing from behind in the third period. The Big Green had been 0-10-0 this season when trailing after two periods of play. That stretch ended Saturday night as the Big Green overcame a 2-1 deficit to Cornell heading into the third period. -.Cameron Roth’s goal with 34.1 seconds remaining in the second period helped Dartmouth get on the board and head into the second intermission down just one, rather than two. -.Alex Jasiek scored two power-play tallies and Troy Crema hit the empty net for the insurance marker to give the Big Green their first win when trailing through two since Game 1 of last year’s first-round series against Colgate. The Raiders led 2-1 going into the third before Brad Schierhorn scored his second of the night at 9:02 of the final frame of regulation and then capped the hat trick 10:59 into OT for the win.
CAREER DAY Jasiek came into Saturday’s game with just four career goals and 16 career points in 50 games for Dartmouth. He had only notched two points in a game one time, a two-assist night at Quinnipiac back on Nov. 11. Those marks all fell in just over 16 minutes of play between the final minute of the second period and into the third Saturday night at Lynah as he scored twice and assisted on another for a career day.
MULTIPLICITY -.It will be hard to top the seven multi-point performances by Dartmouth players against Harvard on Jan. 17, but the four Big Green players who did so against Cornell ranks tied for second most this season (at Rensselaer/1.14) -.Crema (1-2-3), Jasiek (2-1-3), Blankemeier (0-2-2) and Connor Yau (0-2-2) all notched multiple points in the come-frombehind win against the Big Red. -.For Yau, it was just the second multi-point effort of his career, tying his previous mark set in Game 2 of last year’s Colgate series.
THE HEADWAY FOUNDATION -.ECAC Hockey and Headway Foundation have partnered for a Concussion Awareness Weekend on February 3-4. -.Fans choose to pledge a donation for every goal their favorite ECAC Hockey team scores during the weekend. If you pledge $10 for a team and they notch five goals over the upcoming weekend? You’ve just contributed $50 to the cause. The more goals your team scores, the more money raised! -.Fans can choose to pledge any monetary amount they want, and can select as many teams to support as they want. -.Men’s and women’s teams from each school will be working together to come in first place. BACK IN THE LINEUP AND BACK ON THE SCORESHEET After sitting out nine games, junior Kevin Neiley returned to the lineup at Colgate last Friday, a move that immediately paid dividends. Neiley scored Dartmouth’s lone goal, an overpowering wrist shot in the third period for his second of the year and first since the season-opening win against Michigan.
SCORING… BY CLASS! -.Through 22 games this winter, it’s clear that the Big Green have a bright future ahead as the Class of 2020 has amassed 22 goals thus far, five more than the seniors, 10 more than the sophomores and 13 more than the juniors. -.The 11 member rookie class (which features two goaltenders) leads all Dartmouth classes in goals (22), assists (33) and points (55). -.Led by the career year from Troy Crema, the seniors have the edge in power-play goals (7), power-play assists (11), powerplay points (18) and game winners (5) with Crema accounting for four of the GWGs and Grant Opperman’s against Harvard the other.

BIG BUFF TENDY -.Making his first appearance in the unfriendly conditions of Lynah Rink, junior netminder Devin Buffalo came up huge against Cornell. Buffalo made 34 saves against the Big Red, including 14 in the third period for his third-best save figure of this season. -.Buffalo went over the 500-save mark in the game as well as he now has 516 in 1,119:29 of play between the pipes this season. -.The Alberta native is near the top of ECAC hockey goalies with a .908 save percentage to go along with his 2.79 goals against mark.
TIME TO TALK ABOUT STANDINGS With February comes the talk of postseason positioning. -.The Green are currently eighth in ECAC Hockey with 12 points, two ahead of ninth-place Colgate and two back of seventhplace Clarkson. -.Quinnipiac holds the final first-round bye as of right now with 17 points. -.The current probability established by PlayoffStatus.com gives Dartmouth a 34% chance of finishing eighth and playing the Raiders in the postseason for the third straight season.
THE BRADY/BELICHICK ERA Dartmouth is 5-5-2 when playing games the weekend of the Super Bowl during the Tom Brady/Bill Belichick era in New England (2000-present). In the Patriots’ eight previous Super Bowl appearances dating back to 1986, Dartmouth is 6-6-3 in games played during those weekends. The only time the Big Green have played on Super Bowl Sunday in which the Pats have played was a Jan. 26, 1986 game at Colgate that resulted in a 7-3 Dartmouth win. The ’85 Bears put a damper on the day for sports fans across the region as they beat New England, 46-10. The Patriots are 4-1 in Super Bowls when the Big Green win at least one game on the weekend and 0-3 when they fail to notch a ‘W’. BOB GAUDET HEAD COACH | DARTMOUTH CLASS OF 1981
20th SEASON AT DARTMOUTH 29th SEASON AS HEAD COACH Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ‘91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ’95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ‘01, third in ‘05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champion twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league, just one-and-a-half games behind first-place Clarkson. The Bears also spent much of the year in and out of the top 10 in the national polls. Gaudet became head coach of the Bears in 1988 following a five-year tenure as an assistant coach with the Big Green. He assisted in all aspects at Dartmouth under head coaches George Crowe and Brian Mason, while coordinating recruiting efforts and serving as varsity goaltender coach. In addition, he directed the junior varsity program his first season in Hanover. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. In 76 career games, he made a school-record 2,129 saves, while allowing only 299 goals for a 4.00 career goals-against average and an .877 save percentage. He had his most successful campaign as a sophomore when he recorded two of his fourcareer shutouts to go along with a 3.03 goals-against average. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. He played for minor-league affiliates of Winnipeg in the CHL and IHL for one year before a knee injury cut short his promising career. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Like her father, Kelly was a goaltender as well as co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey team while at Hanover High School. Kelly is a member of the Class of 2017 at Dartmouth.

In the last several seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11, eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12 and reaching 800 career games coached, doing so in a 1-1 tie at Vermont in 2013-14. In 2014-15, Gaudet reached both 250 wins at Dartmouth and 350 career wins between Hanover and his time at Brown. In 28 seasons as a head coach, including the last 19 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and 11 total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2016-17 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 279 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. The 2015-16 season was special for Gaudet for both his current and former players. He guided the Big Green back to the ECAC Hockey semifinals for the seventh time, becoming the first team in conference history to reach the league’s final weekend of competition without having a single player earn a spot on any of the three all-conference teams, demonstrating a team-first mentality. Ben Lovejoy ’06 also helped the Pittsburgh Penguins capture the fourth Stanley Cup in franchise history and, in the process, became the first Dartmouth player since Myles Lane ’28 in 1929 to win the Stanley Cup. Lovejoy, the first New Hampshire-born player to win the Cup, brought the trophy back to Thompson Arena for a public event where he was introduced to the crowd by Gaudet whom Lovejoy credited with “giving me a second chance at hockey.” After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 199798 campaign. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from 2000-01 to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 . The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two
