or the first time since 2008, contribution limits have risen for one of the most popular retirement savings vehicles available: the IRA. This means you’ve got a greater opportunity to put more money away for your “golden years.” ffective Jan. 1, you can now put in up to $5,500 (up from $5,000 in 2012) to a traditional or Roth IRA when you make your 2013 contribution. And if you’re 50 or older, you can put in an additional $1,000 above the new contribution limit.

those features in a quiet sleeping beauty. We overlook the obvious because it has no easy solution.

focus must remain the nose itself. it is the nose that occupies the most central location of the face, giving it tremendous aesthetic importance. it establishes the aesthetic theme of the whole face. it should blend with other features, but still have a charm of its own, lending accent and contrast to the face. it is essential for the nose to look natural, not “surgical”. We take pride in the nonoperated appearance of noses done at our Clinic.

Rhinoplasty, the nose shaping procedure, is one of the most

challenging operations in plastic surgery. The surgeon artist has to work in three different media: soft tissue, cartilage, and bone;

each with its own shaping techniques and healing metamorphoses. There is always some uncertainty in the end results, which will not finalize until months after surgery. This procedure is needed

RHINOPLASTY is the art of reshaping a nose, to bring it into harmony with

other features of the face. sometimes, however, other operations must combine with that in order to have maximum aesthetic improvement. there may be a weak chin that needs enhancement for facial balance, or sunken areas around the base of the nose require building up to rescue the nose from the valley it sits in, or too long an upper lip that confers to the adjacent nose an impression of being too short. our artistic foundation and broad ethnic cliental at Plastic surgery institute & spa allows us to identify and correct those unkind characteristics mentioned above, that can forever hold the nose hostage. With the improved methods, we can then make appropriate and accurate modifications. But the central

•MIXED REPAIR – adding to some parts of the nose, and subtracting from others. an example would be a prominent hump in a nose with inadequate tip projection. We must add to the tip’s projection but the hump should be reduced. •REPAIR OF WIDE OR FLARED NOSTRILS •DELICATE AESTHETIC REFINEMENTS – Various delicate maneuvers often do

wonders and convert an unattractive nose into beauty and elegance with very little surgery.

•REPAIR AFTER INJURY – often nose repairs occur after injury, either as an adult or back in childhood. the inside of the nose may need modification to improve the breathing process.

The Truth about X-rays By

JuLia sPranG, dmd

the Center For CosmetiC and FamiLy dentistry there are so many questions and myths floating around about dental x-rays and it is time to clear the air and present some facts. many patients are hesitant about having x-rays taken at dental visits and do not understand their importance and necessity. While reasons for not wanting your x-rays taken may vary, much of the issue can be cleared up with accurate knowledge and education. here are some frequently asked questions about dental x-rays:

many patients do not want dental x-rays because

WHY ARE X-RAYS NECESSARY?

that generate nuclear energy. People worldwide

X-rays can provide valuable information to the dentist that cannot be seen on a visual exam alone. they help to provide a full picture, allowing your dentist to see possible cavities between your teeth or under fillings, cracks, infection at the roots of your teeth, cancers, bone abnormalities, periodontal disease and other lesions that can be missed without proper x-rays. also x-rays are absolutely necessary for implants, orthodontic treatment and dentures.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED DENTAL X-RAYS? your body and your mouth are constantly changing and therefore you need new dental x-rays periodically. there are many factors that come into play when a dentist recommends x-rays, such as the patient’s present oral health, risk for cavities, stage of growth and development, periodontal disease, and other signs and symptoms of oral disease. most people however fall into the category of four bitewing x-rays once a year. this is strongly recommended so that your dentist can do a comprehensive exam and catch any developing conditions or problems early.

WHAT EXACTLY IS AN X-RAY? dental radiographs are images that are made when X-ray radiation passes through the mouth and is caught on a film or digital sensor. the X-rays themselves are actually a form of electromagnetic radiation; this is a form of energy that is transmitted through the air.

they feel they have had too many other medical x-rays that year and it is too dangerous.

radiation can occur in one of two forms, ionizing and non-ionizing. dental X-rays are a form of

ionizing radiation, which can be natural or man-

made. some examples of natural sources of ionizing radiation include some minerals, cosmic radiation

from the sun, air, soil, and radon gas. man-made ionizing radiation occurs when people take part in certain activities that enhance exposure, such as

flying in an airplane, having medical/dental X-rays taken, using computers, and using other devices receive about 2.4msv naturaL radiation exposure in one year, 3.0msv in the united states. as

far as man-made ionizing radiation exposure goes in the united states the average person is exposed to 0.6msv per year (this can vary from person to

person). dental X-rays contribute to about 0.2% of the total exposure to radiation a person receives in one year. this can also be broken down in the following way:

• if 3.0msv is the natural occurring radiation

the average american is exposed to in one year, here are some comparable numbers:

• a 5 hour plane flight is about 0.025msv of

exposure, equivalent to 3 days of exposure

• a mammogram is about 0.42msv of expo-

sure, equivalent to 50 days of exposure

• a chest x-ray is about 0.1msv of exposure,

equivalent to 10 days of exposure

• a dental X-ray (Bitewing/image) is about 0.005msv

of exposure, equivalent to less than 1 day

as can be seen by some of these statistics, a dental X-ray offers significantly less radiation exposure than one may think. Furthermore the risk of taking X-rays is usually far out-weighed by the benefits of your dentist being able to diagnose periodontal disease, cavities, cancers and other problems early. so next time you are in your dental office considering waiving your X-rays, reconsider as your dentist can draw invaluable information about your oral health with a visual and radiographic exam.

teeth can accumulate plaque and tooth structure underneath the plaque can become decayed if the plaque is not removed. THEREFORE, CROWDED TEETH ARE MORE PRONE TO CAVITIES.

STRAIGHT TEETH HELP TO WARD OFF PERIODONTAL DISEASE: not being able to clean the gumline areas around and between teeth due to

crowding can cause gingivitis and even periodontal disease. Gingivitis is quite

common for patients with crowded teeth because gingivitis is caused by chronic trappage of bacteria around the gumline of the teeth. if gingivitis persists, it can develop into periodontal disease which includes jaw bone loss and eventually even tooth loss.

STRAIGHT TEETH DECREASE WEAR AND INCREASE FUNCTIONALITY: the upper and lower teeth must align properly in order to create proper chewing function. straight teeth decrease wear on any one tooth. straight

teeth also are less likely to break or fracture. Crooked teeth create mechanical complications, such as teeth sticking too far out and teeth that may put too much stress on other teeth.

malocclusion can also cause tmJ (temporomandibular joint) pain from undue

and joint must compensate for this poor fit. this

added muscle tension can cause severe pain and multiple symptoms of tmJ.

STRAIGHT TEETH IMPROVE HOW PEOPLE SEE YOU AND HOW YOU SEE YOURSELF: nearly a third of americans say the first thing they notice about someone is their smile. a beautiful

smile can create a lasting impression. many studies

have been performed which evaluate the perception of attractiveness, intelligence and overall well being as it relates to straight teeth. People with straight teeth are seen as most attractive, intelligent and personable in all studies. in a recent invisalign

study, straight teeth can even help you get a better job! hiring managers saw applicants with straight smiles as more qualified and more personable. how interesting!

THE SOLUTION- INVISALIGN OR CROWNS

Invisalign is a clear removable retainer system custom designed

HEALTH, BEAUTY AND FITNESS

to over time slowly move your teeth into their desirable position. This set of clear retainers is usually worn over a period of 6 months to 2 years depending on the initial amount of crowding.

Crowns can be designed to straighten a group of teeth that may be an isolated area of crowding, or the entire section of upper or lower teeth. Called “instant ortho”, with design and planning at our office straight temporaries can be fabricated and placed in one day. We have seen amazing results with both crowns and with Invisalign. With both treatments our patients appreciate that they do not have metal brackets on

their teeth. The procedures are different, but one benefit to crowns is the final straight result can be accomplished in a few weeks. straight teeth are not only for cosmetic reasons now you have a understanding of why straight teeth are essential. deciding to start a family or being new parents can present many hard decisions. Choosing where to have your baby should not be one of them. the Center for new life at Fort Walton Beach medical Center offers families a warm, supportive environment to bring a new baby into the world, complete with Labor, delivery and recovery rooms, an experienced nursing team and up-to-date information and guidance for new parents.

Experience Matters

more than 40,500 babies have been born at FWBmC since we opened our doors in 1974. no one in our area has done it longer – or with more compassion. When it comes to having babies, experience matters, and our physicians and nurses have the experience that matters to you and your baby.

We are Here for You

We also have a neonatal intensive Care unit (Level ii) for premature infants, or those needing additional care. We hope you never need this service, but it’s good to know it’s there when you need it.

You’ll Call it Wonderful: We Call it Couplet Care

We understand that your baby belongs to you, to your family, and not to the hospital. We are committed to giving each of you the education and support your family needs to welcome your new baby into your lives. 24 ~ may/June 2013

mother-baby care, or couplet care, is not the same as rooming in, where you are expected to care for your baby by yourself after childbirth. instead, the same nurse cares for both mom and baby in the comfort and convenience of her room. as the mother, it is your decision when your baby leaves your room.

What are the benefits of couplet care? • smoother adjustment

• Better communication

• more confidence through better education

• Peace of mind having your baby at your side

• Breastfeeding is easier and likely to be more successful • your baby will cry less and be more stable at your side • no special moments are missed • Family bonding is promoted

Safe & Secure

a state-of-the-art infant security system enhances your baby’s safety and your peace of mind. Fort Walton Beach medical Center installed the hugs and Kisses® infant Protection system to safeguard its infants and children. each infant wears a comfortable and unobtrusive hugs tag attached by the means of a soft tamper-proof strap around his or her ankle. alarms are generated if the strap is cut or tampered with, if the infant is moved to an unauthorized zone, or if the tag's signal is no longer detected. the system activates security cameras which record activity at the door at the time of the alarm and one minute prior to the alarm. I grew up in Glassboro, NJ, and enlisted in the US Army in 1967. In 1968 I attended the United States Air Force Academy and was part of the 14th graduating class in 1972.

I then went on to Medical School at Tulane, and did my OB/GYN residency at Keesler Air Force Base. I practiced as an OB/GYN at Elmendorf and Eglin Air Force bases, before retiring from the Air Force in 1985. I loved being in the Air Force, and had some of the best years of my life. After retiring, I joined White Wilson Medical Center and have been practicing medicine here for 28 years. Since 2010, I have been the Medical Director in addition to my GYN practice.

“LAUGHING MATTERS ” Handywoman BY PEPPER JAMES

!

i love the spring, as it’s a perfect time to embark on an outdoor project that is otherwise too unpleasant, weather-wise, to pursue. Two years ago i put a lovely flowerbed in around my screened-in pool. last year i sanded down and repainted my back porch rails and columns, then spiffed it up with new furniture and outdoor carpeting. This year i’ve decided to attack the downstairs front porch.

From the street, the porch doesn’t look too bad. But when you get up close and really look, like i did one beautiful saturday morning, i discovered rotting trim around all six columns along the front, ratty cat furniture, calcified plastic chairs, corroded overhead fans, screens with holes and tears, an ancient porch swing with rusted chains and splintered arms, a peeling front door with mismatched paint exposed, and everything covered in green grime. i don’t have any intuitive skills as far as this type of work goes. i just “wing it” and hope for the best. i also normally get advice from my parents, sister and strangers at the hardware store. This year i also have a friend who seems to be quite handy. When i told her the trim was rotting on my porch columns, she replied, “you have to use pressurized wood,” and “the trick is getting the 45 degree angle cut just right.” i didn’t know what she was talking about, but it sounded good, so i called my father with this information. “daddy, i want to replace the trim on my columns.

40 ~ may/june 2013

my friend said i need to use pressurized wood, and that the hardest part is cutting the 45 degree angles.” “you need wolmanized wood,” he stated. “and i’m not letting you use my saw.” “Womanized? What’s womanized wood? is that the same as pressurized wood?” “Wolmanized, not womanized. and i’m not letting you use my saw.” “Why not?” “Because you’ll hurt yourself. i’ll bring some wood down next time i come over, and i’ll make the cuts.” i looked up wolmanized wood on my iPad. apparently it’s a type of pressurized wood. The wood that was previously used, my father explained, was paperwood.

Paperwood? i looked that up on my iPad. apparently it’s a type of wood made from paper and it comes in either one or two ply. and shouldn’t be used outdoors. Which explains the rotting trim. since i couldn’t work on the columns, i decided to work on the door. i dug out my cute little “mouse” sander i bought last spring and went to work. almost. The sander, which worked fine on the rails in the back, wouldn’t make a dent in the paint on the door. i called my dad. “daddy, do you have a sander i can borrow so i can sand down my front door?” “i do, but it’s too heavy for you. i’ll do it next time i come over.”

my boyfriend came outside right about then. “Honey, would you take these chairs and that ratty cat couch to the dump for me today?” i asked sweetly. “i’m never going to the dump again,” he replied without hesitation. “i went that one time when we

cleaned out the garage, and i am never setting foot in that slimy, stinky, disgusting dump again. ever. i’ll pay someone else to do that - it’s not going to be me.”

sigh. i called my dad again. “daddy, how do you replace the screens over these windows?” “Those are customized sizes. you’re probably going to have to order new ones.” “How do i get the rusted chains off the porch swing?” “you’ll need a bolt-cutter, and i’m not letting you use mine. i’ll do it next time i come down.” “How do...?” never mind. This was a losing battle.

maybe i could do something with the fans. i read on eHow that if they’re still working, you can take them down and sand them, then repaint them and put them back up. i wasn’t sure if they still worked, so i turned them on from the switch by the front door. nothing happened. i was just about to go get a ladder so i could pull the chains, when i noticed several hornets buzzing around. That’s when i discovered hornets had built nests on the fan blades. i went out to the garage and found several cans of hornet killer. all expired. so the first step in my new spring project is actually to get in the car and drive to the hardware store to purchase some hornet killer. Because i can’t do anything with the fans, rotting trim, ratty furniture, calcified chairs, rusted porch swing, peeling door or holey screens until i get rid of the hornets. Then i’ll need to just wait for my dad to come over. Pepper James is a local humorist who welcomes any comments or questions regarding her articles. She can be reached at pjlaughing@gmail.com.
